  • This is my overview of a 5-in-1 Weather Station sent to me for evaluation by Sainlogic. I can definitely see the advantages to being able to monitor real-time temperature, humidity, wind speed & direction, pressure and rainfall will offer to my growing decisions. I especially like the customizable alarms for when conditions go above or below thresholds. Thanks to Sainlogic for sending the weather station. Here are their links:

I love my home weather station! I have it connected to Weather Underground so it shows up on their website when looking for data for Chilliwack. I know my neighbours like to be able to use it too as we are up higher in own little microclimate. I can export the data into Excel which is handy for being able to figure out last frost dates etc.

Thanks Kathy. I can imagine the weather up in the Ryder lake area can be a little volatile at times, so nice to have accurate monitoring!

I might have to get one. It'll help me with getting an accurate reading of my microclimate.

Very interesting! I’ll have to check out if they facilitate exporting the gathered data to Excel…I’m a bit of a data nut 🤓 and would like to evaluate weather trends in my backyard

i have the Davis. it's cool but they had a capacitor issue, if i want it to work after dark, need to keep putting batteries in it. 80 bucks they'd fix it that was 4 years ago. I still use it the monitor in house is nice.. Not being critical, but I think you need to have yours higher away from trusses.

All I can say is we are having the mildest weather for February that I can only remember in Ontario 🤔

Another great video! Only slightly related to this topic, but you did mention it somewhat at the end--what heaters to you use for your greenhouses? Is there any chance you might have a video highlighting good heating/lighting options that work on a smaller scale?

You may actually have seen one of my heaters in the background in the final shot - a diesel heater. I priced out the costs of various heat sources, and diesel came out favorable against my other options. You do have to rig it up to vent outside the greenhouse for safety and that can be a challenge (hot exhaust pipe, melty greenhouse plastic!). We also have an electric back-up under that same bench to protect young plants over winter. Here are my two videos on those projects: ua-cam.com/video/ouslpOhN5pY/v-deo.htmlsi=Sds2pdhxGXwxGRWX and ua-cam.com/video/kgvnMTN4ohE/v-deo.htmlsi=NmBiJjiSeRZ7X52N

I would be interested to see a long vid on your home composting systems and what you do with plants you don't use. Do you just compost them?

Thanks. I'll see about getting it onto the list - but I'm not sure how interesting it will be. For plants that die (or just won't sell, and I'm ready to give up on them) it's usually better to dive the potting soil from the above-ground vegetative parts. The green stems break down readily in a cold compost pile (only cold because I don't manage the time to turn frequently if at all). The potting soil (& roots) are too "brown" or carbon-rich for fast composting, and I often use this spent soil around the landscape - working it into the mulch on garden beds or filling up small depressions & uneven ground around the lawn.

Maybe that makes me tragic, but I would love to see your bays and hear about your composting process. Maybe a mini vid encouraging others to setting up their own composting themselves. I learn a lot from you. No doubt I would learn more about compost. Lol. Perhaps you could trial some new composting tech. I have some HotBins that I find good for small spaces. Maybe you could get a new bin out of it? 😆 @@FraserValleyRoseFarm

Do you think the location of the weather station so close to the wood structure might impact the wind readings?

Jason, you may have taken up weather watching as a hobby eventually. My dad and father in law had weather stations. My husband and I thought their fascination with weather stats was amusing. Now my husband finds himself lingering at weather station displays in Costco. So given another five years, you may have found yourself drawn in. 😂 I think it's a biological clock thing. I don't dare send this video to my husband.

My husband had received one as a gift .. seems fine, but he didn't get the app

Thanks. For the price difference (if any) I think I might have taken the app version - this one was sent for evaluation, so I'm not complaining. And it's good for what it is, but I think I'd get some use out of tracking weather history from the station.
