Ever since I uploaded videos with the Multistrada and the big GS people told me that I need to ride the big KTMs as well. Because apparently they are the sportiest travel enduro options you can get. That of course made me extra curious. And in this RAW here you're basically witnessing me making the following realization: those people were right. Stelvio downhill were my first real twisties during my 2018 September Italia tour. It's where I for the first time could truly feel how capable the Super Adventure S actually is. Very capable of course. And it gets better the quicker you go. Which I didn't really do because I can't afford to crash a 20K € bike ;)
Its suspension setup is quite stiff. It provides amazing stability. Even if you're throwing the bike around like a madman you won't feel any wobbles. This in combination with the mighty engine making 160 horses and 140Nm of torque will leave a big smile on your face when you want to travel just a little faster. Plus it's a bit lighter than most of its competitors. It handles 100% predictably and without any big effort. The quickshifter works flawlessly. If it did not it always was my own fault (=pressing the lever sloppily). And the brakes work spot-on as well. Not overly aggressive and still mighty powerful. What a bike!!
Is there anything I didn't like? Well. Obviously the sportiness has minor drawbacks. On the comfort side of things. Although the engine behaves properly and this KTM does cruise mode well too it is not as comfortable as the GS for instance. The SA has you seated very high up, close to the bars. You're sitting on top of the bike rather than inside it. Typical of KTM. Which feels amazing when you want to go fast. But I don't really appreciate that during the boring and straight bits which unfortunately are part of every big bike tour. And even if the seating positions on the other travel enduros are more comfortable they'll still allow you to go super fast too. Personally I simply have to put blind faith in suspension and tires on every one of these bikes anyway. Their long suspension travels makes it impossible for me to decipher any feedback from the bike. No matter if it's the GS, Multistrada, Super Adventure, Tiger, or V-Srom. In the end my conclusion was the following: I'd take the KTM over any other travel enduro if I went riding for 3 days in a row or less. 3 days plus and I'd rather take any other model. Preferably the GS because it offers the best comfort.

loved the take on clickbait motovloggers at 5:21. Keep it up, loving your runs
;)
Still loving your riding style (maybe even more with the more safety-minded approach) and the video quality/camera positioning is still unrivaled on UA-cam. :)
thanks man!
Earned a subscriber here. Beautiful scenery, good footage, but most importantly to me, a good example of having fun while still riding safely. Exactly as I would do it - pushing the bike when the visibility and roads/space permit, and being respectful, slow, and careful at any and all points where there may be higher concentrations of people, lack of visibility, etc. Respect
thanks a lot, I appreciate it. Although it took some time for me to develop this somewhat responsible pace. I used t be quite wild.
Finally I found my way back onto some superfine Austrian machinery! Enjoy the cruise down the magnificent Southwestern side of the legendary Stelvio pass!
Like 493 Brasil, Brasil.
Indian machinery ...
Schaaf, I read your discription to this video, and I gotta tell you: Honda VFR1200XD Crosstourer is better than BMW R1200GS. Sure Honda is not as fancy as BMW, and doesn't have as much bells and whistles. But Crosstourer is faster than the GS, comfier than the GS, many times more reliable than GS, and also cheaper. Better bike it is. Especially with the optional DCT gearbox, which is absolutely great!
Cheers.
Omg I hope that someday I figure out my life and end up going somewhere there to ride with friends.
good luck!
5:07 Shots fired!
fuck yeah!
No survivors
(unfortunately he didn't) in the corner. I haven't laughed so damn hard the whole month.
Exciting.... gorgeous landscapes and spirit riding as only you know how to show us buddy!!
So glad to watch you having fun and delight us with this videos!!
Thank's for that Shaaf.. Hell yeah \m/
thanks for the comment mate!
thanks for the feedback on the bike! im in the market for a travel adventure bike and am in a struggle between which bike i think i would like the most. still some things id like to look into but this helped for sure. keep up the great vids. always enjoy them
Beautiful, just beautiful! I hope you filmed many videos, something like 20 of them! :D Haha, good job Schaaf, as always!
thanks man! I guess 6-8
I
Excellent choice, Marco!! Mille grazie!
thank you for this nice ride in the mountains with the 1290!
thank you for the comment!
Mmmmmhhh...
I
sehr gut!! Danke, Niclas!
One of the best passes of Europe. I love it. I have done it two times only downhill. My next target to do it the other way around.
Nice video!
thanks Viktor!
Danke dir!
thanks a lot Jabba!!
danke, Rotty!
It's awesome!!! I've tried to pass Stelvio this May, but the road was closed at an altitude of ≈ 2000 meters. Stelvio is one of the most beautiful mountain passes I've ever seen in Europe. Thanks for the video!)
thanks for the comment!
To say that I envy you is an understatement xD. GREAT upload as always!!
thanks man :)
😍
freut mich!!
Excellent riding, Lovely bike & absolutely breath taking roads/scenery. Thanks & Enjoy!
thanks for commenting!
Motorcycling POV brilliance.
Love the vids, just found your channel, seen only 2 so far (subed & notify). You got skills, with safe riding in mind...... knowing when and where to pickup the PACE. Do track days? Keep the vids come.
Hello and welcome Bob! Thanks for the nice words! Nope, I don't do trackdays because I can't afford those but I'm super motivated to get some track time in next year!!
Great video, really enjoyed the ride !!
In which direction of the Stelvio was the ride ?
Nice video mate. I have the 1290 GT and love it. Keep on posting your videos please. You ride at a good speed.
thanks Stephen!!
I really like passo del bocco. Kinda away from me (~40kms) and it doesn't have the best tarmac or turns...but it connects to a lot of other great roads/passi and i have good memories of it.
A schaaf approved road tho can be passo del bracco, but i did it only a few times
Great video! I
thanks a lot Kiddo!! I'll write those down, one day I'll make my way back to Mallorca I sure hope :)
Your channel is such a pleasure to watch! 😍
Thank you so much!
Awesome road and bike! So glad to see you ride like this! Keep safe man! 🤙
thanks mate
...and
sounds amazing! Thanks man!
0:29 what was that sound? it sorta sounds like a turbo blowoff but I can't imagine that would be it, maybe tire squeel?
Been following you from the beginning then left for a bit as you were going a bit too crazy for my taste. But man your new riding pace is just perfect I subconsciously make the move with my left foot at same time as you change gear, i squeeze the right lever at the same time, I feel like I'm riding the bike.
my pace varies in the different KTM RAWs but for sure I'm not able to ride my old pace any longer
Hallo Schaaf, sind Sie schon mal überholt worden Berg auf / runter 😉 Schön alles so anzusehen ⚡️
I
freut mich sehr! Danke für den Kommentar!!
As always great drive! Beautiful roads and landscapes.
My favorite mountain road is "Aursjøvegen", north-western Norway. A must for adventure-bike riders visiting these parts of the country.
thanks a lot man!
Absolutely spanktastic that me old mate. I had a slash in that car park at 4.24, just so you know. I were absolutely burstin 😆
You‘ve got some skills man! Nice video👍🏻
thank you!
wow man, i mean you’re just awesome 🤷🏼♂️ when i watch your videos i feel like i do if i was to watch a great guitar player or artist or footballer or whatever so when you are sure you are just watching nothing more than pure natural talent. amazing. an im right there on your shouldeer!!! rock on baby ✌️
thanks a lot Jon!
el brutalo haut vor jeder Kehre den ersten Gang rein, als ob es kein Morgen gäbe.... thanks god for Anti-Hopping and MSR ;-) Cool Video! Ride safe my friend 👍
jo, macht mir einfach mehr Spaß so! Danke dir!!
Sweet vid. What are you filming with and how did you get rid of the wind noise?
Servus Schaaf!
Sonst hätte KTM da ordentlich was verbockt ;)
Have an 1190, great bike too. Wonder how much stiffer it is because I like my 1190 a bit stiffer...
cool!!! Unfortunately I can't tell!
Great video as usual 👍. Seriously considering the 1290 as my next bike.
surely no mistake
At 5:21 is it the sound of rear wheel locking up while downshifting?
I love your videos Schaaf. How many of these Super Adventure videos have you got lined up?
6-8
Great video! Awesome road and bike! Am so tempted to change my GSA and buy one of these!
thanks Scott!
I changed from a GSA to a 1290 SAS - good move!
I love these videos, and your tour videos, but mostly? I
thanks a lot Fred!!
So peaceful bro. Wow. Awesome bike bro., and if can also visit too
It sounds like there is a little tyre squeak many times you gear down with the quick shifter. Am I hearing correctly?
yes! It's because I'm only using the rear brake and each time I hit the downshift for a short moment the rear spins slower than the front and makes the tire squeak
Hallo Jens! Was du gelesen hast, das stimmt.
Top Class ride.
To me the best ADV model.
Waiting for more.
Cheers.
thanks man! A LOT more 1290 SA wideos will come :)
Hello, congratulations, for the guide that as usual is beautiful fluid and fast. I like the bike.
thanks man
Hi your KTM video just popped up on my feed 😊👍🏻 just read you description, I have a SAS too and love it so much even more than my 1260s Multi... ok maybe not the noise as I have full Termi 😍 but honestly with the Ergo seat on it she is sooooo comfy. I have done 17k Miles in a year 😱 and 9k Miles on the 1260s. I have just changed the sprockets and was sent 42T rear instead of the standard 46T man alive it is even quicker... and pulls so so hard!!! I’m about to have her Dyno-ed so will let you know the results 😊👍🏻 anyway keep up the great work... I enjoy listening to the bikes on your videos rather than some guy talking 💩
Thanks Lee!
nice road man and nice camera. angle!I have not been there but here in Greece you can find these curves because of the mountains almost everywhere.Still the quality of the tarmac there must be top!
it is! Thanks John!
Great bike, great riding skills, great road! I
thank you very much!!!
Question....how do you turn off the Engine? by Emergency switch or the grey race on button below....
Kill Switch
Ride safe :)
meine auch ;) Danke dir!
I can hear rear tire skidding sometimes on downshift. Does this one have motor slip regulation?
Yes
You got style, awesome video. Subscribed! 🙃
thanks Jack!
absolut makellos
i liked the timmelsjoch (if that is how you spell it). but the stelvio was hard on my arms as a passenger. the accelerating and hard braking 88 times was impressive
yea, Timmelsjoch! Great one too!
Thanks for the vid ... I hope to ride the Alps one day. I
thanks a lot Mark!!
I
Thanks a lot
You ask for my favourite roads and passes, Stelvio was great and I enjoyed it.
one road I REALLY enjoyed in Austria this summer that wasnt planned, we just came across it one day was.
Imst in Austria along the L246 towards Stanzac, then take a right towards Berwang.
don't know that one but it looks great on Google Maps :D
Awesome! I
MILLE GRAZIE, Jonas!!
By going so fast during the downhill isn't it a little dangerous for overheating the brakes?
I'm actually not going fast and you actually could go a lot quicker without overheating the brakes on this kind of bike
Ahí va mi like amigo.
Muchas gracias
This is high on the bucket list, i hope to be doing this soon. I
good luck!!! Mille grazie!
Love your video’s!!
Thanks Jason
Videoqualität TOP
Landschaft TOP
Fahrstil TOP
Unterhaltungsfaktor TOP

Musik Top!
great video! just a question: how is possible to do a pic like you video thumbnail? with background moving
that is an actual screengrab taken from the video, only added more contrast and clarity. The motion blur is real
Fab stuff :-) :-) Luv it. Keep em vids of the 1290 pouring in :-) :-)
soon!!
@Schaaf, any video on the camera/ sound recorder/ accessories you wear at this time?
Thanks dude, full throttle !
still the same setup as in the tutorial video you just commented on ;)
Just what I needed to spice up my Sunday evening. Must have been amazing driving these fantastic roads on such a bike! I
thanks Kevin !!!
Nice ride, so do you recommend this bike?
yes
Great Schaaf stuff! I love Namlostal.
great road! Thanks!
Summer just got so much further away...
Where is that?
Italy.
Look up The Devil's Highway in Arizona USA. Used to be called RT 666 it's now RT 191. You have almost 70 miles or so of turns. You will spend most of the time in 2nd or 3rd gear. It's a good workout! Amazing scenery as well. Then check out The Million Dollar Highway in Colorado USA. Lots of turns and amazing views. I just bought the KTM 1290 SAS... Loving it! How did you enjoy your time on it?
I loved most of my time on the SAS!
So beautiful... I like Alps, good thing I don't live too far from Austria. :-) Also, bonus points for your buddy having a Tiger 800.
yea, Tiger rules!!
If you ever ride in north-east Italy near the border of Austria, you should check the tight twisties from Mauthen (Austria) across the border to Timau (Italy).
thanks for the suggestion!
Nice riding style, impressive bike!
I happen to be the 1000th like!😛🤘🏻
Spotted a rare Boxster Spyder at 12:00;)
well spotted!! Thanks Vincent!
Nice video! Totally agree, this is the best side of Stelvio. The road to Trafoi is amazing by the glacier but it's quiet bored because of the 44 "tornante". This side is too much pretty!!
indeed!
What kind of camera do you have?
Toll.
Diese hier: amzn.to/2zGRrTI
@schaaf which action camera do you use?
Hey Schaaf, did you have your lights on in the tunnels? If so, at which voltage do they run, 1.5v??
the SAS lights are excellent. The darkness happens because I'm using ND filters on the camera
That is my bike bro. I just freaked out and looked in the garage. Thought you tool her to Italy! I need to get the travel package. Did this one have it???
thehehe if travel package means boxes left and right, yes
Great vdeo. What camera are you using?
Beautiful ride! Great engine sound... Does it have slippery clutch?
yes
So much envy. I got the feeling this thing must be a one mind-blowing "pulling and pulling... endlessly" machine. I have to try one of these out! just to get it out of my system.
But I'd like to ask if it really feels somewhere near of nimble (cause in my mind the KTM looks as heavy as the moon, as much as it's lighter than the others) when you try to chuck it around in high speed corners, specially in changing directions abruptly in twisties. Even though I love to ride one from time to time, I can't help but think that "adventure" bikes nowadays are just a safe for those who are a bit indecisive.
Maybe that's the recipe for success.
It doesn't feel near of nimble. It actually is VERY nimble!!!
Hi schaaf you still got the little Honda.
yes
Sag mal, wie heißt der Pass?
Danke fürs Fernweh 😉. 👍🏻 Video
gern geschehen ;)
Try out the Passo Gavia , just the other side of Bormio, ans Passo Giau a few kms south west of Cortina D' Ampezzo Italy
Been there many times
Great video! About other cool roads I suggest you try SS46 from Roveretto to Schio. There is also a parallel SP89 but haven’t tried that one.
SS46 is absolutely breathtaking. Been there with the KTM. Unfortunately it was wet :((((
Next time then! Looking forward to a video on SS46!
I've got the 1290 SAR - what a bike! The 21 Inch front wheel makes it a little heavier tipping in but with countersteering and leaning on the inside peg not too bad. Just love the power and quick shifter. After all the bikes I've owned, this is the one I've nearly lost my license on, but I love it :)
understandable :D
Awesome! What this place?
