To be honest, my childhood memories are all the food my dad made, fried chicken and fresh fries, he cooked pretty well, I miss him, he died In 2000 with only 50 😢@@GreenoEats
@@jessicanippes1730 Oh I am sorry to hear that Jessi - 50 is no age at all, much too young. I'm glad you have lots of happy memories to look back on though.
Ha ha - I had the same feeling Gary - talking about eating there 40 years ago... 40 years is a looooong time (don't think the menu's changed much since then!)
First time I had a Wimpy, I thought I'd discovered Utopia. Not going to give my age away but as a teen, the ketchup came in a plastic tomato, and you got real cutlery. Always thought Wimpy far better than McDonald's, and still do. Great review, cheers 😊👍
As a 59 year old great grandfather, this takes me back to Luton in the late 70's My mum use to get luncheon vouchers as part of her pay and perks from work. She would save them up and once a month we would go to the wimpy just outside the arndale centre and I would have. 1/4 pounder and chips Strawberry milkshake Knickerbocker glory Then spend the next hour having brain freeze. Wonderfull memories.
Story for you. I got engaged in the Wimpy in High Wycombe when I was 17 😂. I chose my ring but it was too big so it had to be made smaller. When we went to collect it we popped into the Wimpy for a burger. I decided to try my ring on and just didn't take it off. 43 year's ago. 😮
Ah, those Saturday afternoons spent going around the shops in town: Max Spielmann first to drop off your holiday films, C&A, Rumbelows, Freeman Hardy & Willis, Dixons, BHS, Woolworths and finally a meal at Wimpy!
Ahhh, nice bit of nostalgia there. Noticing the Heinz Ketchup, I remember when they used to offer it in a tomato shaped plastic container which had a sticky feel to it all over and the tip had congealed ketchup on it which you had to wipe clean to get any out before squirting some onto the hamburger. Thanks for a great video, as always.
I remember Wimpy in the 60s was a very badly run franchise of an American chain where almost any greasy spoon signed up for the branding but carried on with their low-standards greasy spoon ways and the modern enforcement of franchise standards was lacking. Strangely, the Wimpy EMEA (rest of world other than North America) Master Franchise was bought by J Lyons in 1953, they of the pre and post-war Lyons Corner Houses, the epitome of silver service catering for the masses and then a chain of tea shops selling their high-end tea, coffee and sticky buns. Their factories made cakes and buns for their tea shops and also sold direct to consumers via growing chain supermarkets like Tesco and Sainsbury's. The company was innovative in business and when they 'stuck to the knitting' were incredibly successful despite being largely a family-owned and run business. But their eye was not on the ball running what was the very first UK national fast-food franchise, Wimpy. It rather did for Wimpy really and it actually was used by the big USA brands to move in and say they were different and better run and under Lyons control Wimpy survived from 1953-76. Since then, the Lyons company has been sold and re-sold and split into component parts and one operates Main Franchises of more confectionery/baked goods offers - Baskin-Robbins and Dunkin Donuts - both better run but still in the second tier of fast food franchises in my personal opinion. By 1989, with only 140 outlets, the Wimpy UK brand had fallen into the hands of Grand Metropolitan (now Diageo) who also owned Burger King and so all the Wimpy outlets were converted to Burger King - a better known and more successful brand and to a lesser extent outlets called Dr Beaks, an erstwhile competitor to KFC which never seemed to get any traction and faded away. Meanwhile, the old Wimpy brand had been growing from strength to strength in South Africa with 453 outlets and now owned by the SA group - Famous Brands, acquired the Master Franchise for Wimpy EMEA in 2007 and beginning in the Noughties began to open new outlets of Wimpy in the UK as well as across the Middle East. The UK now has about 64 outlets of Wimpy but they still seem to be located in low-rent as opposed to prime locations. If you have any memories of the old 60s-70s Wimpy or the newer reincarnations, please put your recollections in the Comments section.
Our wimpy in Scunthorpe didn't end up as a burger king it was turned in to a McDonald's franchise mid 80s, all the same staff etc worked there, even the interior wasn't changed much, but it offered inferior burgers and chips to the wimpy.. The last wimpy I went in to was about 15 years or so ago in Barking train station.
WoooHoo a Wimpy! Oh Greeno you are bring back those 70s vibes! A real treat for us country bumpkins during a rare trip to Aberdeen was a wimpy for lunch. Always had the Wimpy half pounder with cheese & special sauce! Epic. Never had the nerve to try a Bender in a bun!! Oooer missus! Lol nice one!👍👍👍♥️
I’d anticipate some nice subscriber counts for your channel. Keep it up! Also the differences in your GOOD manners. Well spoken. Education. Brits really take the above to a higher level. Wish we had more of that in America.
I had no idea Wimpy still existed. I remember going there in the 1960s. I seem to remember that the burgers used to come from a tin back then, but that was all we knew. I don’t think I’d be tempted to try Wimpy again. Wonderful view, btw.
I think it depends on which branch of Wimpy. I live in South London and our local Wimpy does a roaring trade. It is never empty and on Friday afternoons and Saturday you are lucky to get a table. They are also on Deliveroo and do well on that.
used to love a Wimpy with my mum in the 1980s!! coke float and lime milkshake was the best!! BRown Derby and their famous circle curly sausauge with the burger !!! nice to see they kept the name International Grill!! . Shame the prices have gone on the steep side there!!!.. Nice to see that you are in Swanage ! not been for years but the place is like a timewarp! love it there!
My wife and I are from the US . Back in the early 80's as we continued to travel to the UK and other parts of the world. Wimpy's was the cheapest place to eat while not breaking the bank. It filled the need. In comparison to MCD , Wendy's Burger King. Price wise , which is the cheapest for value. All the best👍👍 Jim and Harriet
Great trip down memory lane with this one. Last time I went in one was as a kid & my Nan treated me , probably mid 60’s. The Lyon’s corner House was the other place she’d take me for a treat.
Every time me and mother went to kings Lynn it would be a Wimpy lunch, this was late 70s/early 80s, 2 burgers and chips and a knickerbocker glory for afters, couldn’t see down to the far end due to all the cigarette smoke. Then in 1978 we went to Norwich and stopped in the brand new branch of McDonald’s, had burger and chips in there and I’ll never forget mothers words “eating out of a bloody egg box and no knives or forks, this place will never catch on”
Ha ha, that's brilliant ! Imagine nowadays taking your kids into a smoke filled restaurant, probably the chef smoking even. People would go mad, but it was just how it was back then!
Having said that I had a Bender Surprise in Wimpy many years ago. That being said, I only just remembered it thanks to your comment, so it is what it is.
The last time that I went to a Wimpy was in Birmingham about 30 years ago and I got an autograph off Laurie Cunningham, Brendan Batson and the big man Cyrille Regis! Imagine seeing premier League players in a fast food restaurant these days!
The licking of the palm of his hand and putting it back on someone else’s burger turned my stomach, regardless whether it’s your child or partners burger I think most of us wouldn’t want someone to lick their palm then touch our food. Other than that in all honesty I was surprised to see that the meal prices are only about £2 more than when I went there the first time 15 years ago when I was a teenager. I only went a couple of times but remember thinking it was expensive essentially for lower quality than Burger King at the time and they charged nearly double BK prices. I’m surprised to see there was a meal deal for £9 that really good as I paid £10 for a burger and chips no drink 15yrs back. I live in London so yes things are more expensive but with inflation being what it is and wimpy never being cheap for what u get I don’t think it was bad for wimpy. When u start comparing other places that have the same standard food or higher is when it doesn’t seem decent but that’s because you’re paying for the name not for the subpar food.
I was careful to only touch the burger with my fingers after I licked that mayo, although I agree it’s hard to see that on the video. As for Wimpy, I just think you can get similar food cheaper elsewhere, or better food for that same money. It’s basically cheap cafe food for Five Guys prices.
Brought back memories of my first experience of eating out alone aged 15 back in the late 70s with a pound pocket money. Wimpy in glamorous Birkenhead. Thanks for the memories and great to see them still going.
The thing about a historic Wimpy bar (of course this was back in the days before people invented customer service), was that you sat down, a waiter came to you and took your order, and the food was cooked to order for you. Nowadays, now we have modern customer service, you go to Mcwotsit burger, stand in line for long period, get given some precooked food, and you are supposed to clear up after yourself! I haven't eaten in a Wimpy for decades, but compared to Mcwotsits, I'd pick Wimpy every time!
I haven't seen a Wimpy for years, there used to one down the road from us when we lived in London. Was always a treat on an occasional Saturday night. That was in the late 60s early 70s, good time's not like this mad world we live in today.
Wimpy, now there's a blast from the past, I had my 10th birthday there one year, Mr Wimpy scared the living daylights out of me 😂. I found myself wanting a coke float, that chicken stack looked great, most definitely something I'd try. Another great review Greeno.
I hadn't been inside a Wimpy for near on 50 odd years, until fairly recently, as I had an experience I never forgot! Back in the day they used to serve up a Heinz tinned veg salad side with their burgers in the days before coleslaw became popular! Found myself chewing & chewing & chewing...& realised I had distinct flavour of spearmint...think you know what's coming!....Yep, lump of chewing gum in with the peas & carrots & mayo Swore never again would I go to Wimpy...until a few weeks back. 50 years on, there was no chewing gum but the bendy didn't taste at all like I remembered & the burger was just like a rubber ball! Might be another 50 years before I return!! Ha! Ha!🙃😄 Glad you & your girls enjoyed it though Greeno! x J x
I remember the Knickerbocker Glory ..... it was too expensive and I wasn't allowed to have one !! Wimpy's was a birthday treat, back in the day . Thanks for the video :)
Absolutely remember that kind of thing - you could go in for a burger, but not a dessert. Would have to make the trip back home and get a block of Neopolitan ice crem out of the freezer instead!!
Wimpy is so good it has kept it in the same quality as it always has the fries are so good freshly cooked and full of flavour you won't get any of the wimpy menu from other American places like there food they cook freshly cooked as you order it if you don't want onion etc just tell the waitress not a machine.
We took our teenagers for their first Wimpy in Swanage last October. Growing up, there were Wimpys in Saundersfoot and Worthing. I must admit to 'bigging up' the place... but seeing as neither had any complaints... from a teenager that's high praise indeed. I've never been in a McDonald's and never will, BK is the only comparison and Wimpy wins hands down. Special sauce included.
@GreenoEats hi Greeno. They loved it. They can't wait to go back. Our nearest BK or UFK is in Ross Vegas (Ross on Wye), meaning it's eat in or cold chips by the time it gets home. My daughter is really picky with food and she loved it. As an aside.. BK at Warminster services on the A36 has to be the best BK I've tried.. despite the location.
If your children are telling you they don’t mind you putting your fingers all over their food and handing it back to them partially eaten, they’re just being nice. I would never go out to eat with you again.
We are a family, and can share food without grossing out about it. If you handle money, or give someone a kiss you’ll share as many, if not more germs.
@@Phil-jz8gs My comment makes perfect sense. As a father of 3 boys I also shared food with them from time to time, but I wouldn’t handle their food and molest it and then hand it back to them and be like “ thanks, here you go. Enjoy “ . Especially if Im treating them at a restaurant. Don’t be cheap and buy your own damn food. Hands touching any denomination of money has nothing to do with the fact that most people wash their hands before eating and then handle money. Plus I never brought up germs. I am simply saying that if you take your kids out for dinner, it’s their dinner not yours. Or did you put stipulations on it like “ hey girls how would you like to go out to dinner? Only one catch, I have to take a bite or two out of everything you order first in order to make my video “ C’mon man that’s just cheap
What a bit of nostalgia. I remember being taken to the "Wimpy Bar" as they were known then more than fifty years ago now. I'm sixty-five. The sausage was called a "bender" and on the menu was something called a "bender egg brunch" which I think was a fancy way of saying: sausage, egg and chips. Also they had the exotic delights of a brown derby and rum baba for dessert. Gosh, how time has flown by.
"This is the way the world will end. Not with a bang but a Wimpy". The franchise continues in a few places, but got superseded. Sad. I grew up in the Valleys and you had to go all the way to Newport or Cardiff to eat what was effectively SKOOL DINUZ yuk you spent Monday to Friday avoiding! Didn't feature much in my childhood except on holiday - seem to remember a branch in Exeter. Great nostalgia though. I've been saving this one...
I was 10 years old when the first Wimpy opened up,and I must admit I have never had one,my first burger was in a New Jersey diner in US 59 years ago,and it was instant love for me,a thinnish patty, thrown on the flat top, flipped,a slice of cheese, onto a browned on the flat top bun, lettuce, tomato, side of fries, half a dill pickle, then presented bleeding, and greasy, the most delicious burger. As I now live in NYC I haven’t had a diner burger in a long time,New Jersey is the diner capital.Once in a while I make myself one,but they don’t taste the same as ones cooked on the flat top, never ever eat fast food burgers, only chicken sandwiches from fast food places.😊
Oh wow! Coke float! or is it a Pepsi? Mum used to buy American Cream Soda pop from the corner shop and a small block of Walls ice cream. We didn't have a fridge so it was devoured there and then. Must admit I didn't really like it. As for going to Wimpy, it was in Blackpool. It was Dad and the three of us. I can still remember the taste and smell of the burger and the glass bottle of Pepsi or Coca cola was amazing. Teengreeno looking lovely. Nice to see her. That place looks very clean and it's good to see the burgers and chips on a plate and not in a cardboard box. That egg was beautifully fried. That whole plate looked quite good. Fabulous view behind you outside. However, I almost slid off my chair at the price!!! 🍟🥓🍳🌭 Better than drinking a cup of tea, without sugar, without milk, without tea. Licking road wit tongue.🫖
@@GreenoEats Yes it was a lovely memory. Very exciting time. Dad had a car because my Uncle bought it and drove it into a tree and ruined it. He never drove again. Dad had been a mechanic in the Army so he acquired it. Austin Cambridge LHG 25. Anyway he took us to the Watford Gap motorway service. We had chips and ketchup. They were awful but it was still exciting. How times have changed. 👍
Hi Greeno, haven't been to Wimpys since I was 12 so that's 36 years ago. But the bendie with a bread was always a hit together with the coke float. But my favourite was the quarted pounder with double cheese and nothing else and fries. So it definitely brings back memories and maybe I have to go back and try it out again. Another great review in the bag, mate and keep up the fabulous work! Have a wonderful rest of your day and take care!
Thanks so much for your kind words as always - I am glad you enjoyed the video and it jogged the memory - can't beat a bit of nostalgia. As a doctor though just don't let people know you eat there - they will give you stick for not following your own advice haha!
Great review Greeno. God, this takes me back. Always used to go to Wimpy on our occasional visits to Swansea. Alas, I don't think there are any Wimpy branches left in the whole of Wales now. Perhaps it's just nostalgia but I always thought Wimpy was better than Maccy D's and BK. Probably because it was a rare treat rather than a branch in every town.
@@anthonymaddaford8474 I am sorry that it upsets you - I just don't see why you are so het up. It's a review of 3 plates of food - which we shared out between ourselves.
You open and touch everything. And what’s hilarious is she said something far kinder and hardly “het up” and you took exception commenting twice. You are the one het up bc it’s rude and rather disrespectful
Enjoying your vids. Got introduced as I was watching a few of Gary Eats videos. How do your family feel about you taking a big bite out their food everytime you do a review ? I would of decked my dad back in the day for doing that 😆 Jokes aside keep the videos coming. Between you and Gary you are doing a great job
All looks excellent to me. Must find our nearest one in Wales if any exist. I come from Margate in Kent originally where wimpys were everywhere in Kent at one time.
Yes, we had a few of them around - Poole High Street would be the one we might be treated at. I just checked, and it seems there are no branches in Wales at all, which is a bit strange (still 7 in Kent though!)
Used to come to England on holiday when we lived in Zambia. going to the Wimpy was a great treat for myself and my siblings. The best part was the knickerbocker glories. I have not been to a Wimpy for over 4 decades. Nostalgic review, Thank you!!
@@GreenoEats It was indeed! We moved there in January of 1967, a month after my 4th birthday. In the June, my mother announced to my younger brother and I that we were going to have a Zambian baby. When she was born, in the September, we were very disappointed, because she was white and blonde. We had been excited about the prospect of a little black baby with fuzzy hair. I guess that 4 year olds have no idea of genetics, lol.
When I was growing up there was only Wimpy, no MacDonalds or Burger King and was a nice treat! Like you said, it is what it is! A bit pricey though. All the same, very enjoyable video.
@@DaveDoran ticket prices went up a bit this summer - but more and more seats in the little ground being given over to Hospitality, so likely to keep going that way sadly !
Great video. A Wimpy & Chips is part of my childhood and I still pop in for the occasional Special Grill. My only gripe with the current iteration of Wimpy is the prices. The whole point of "Diner Food" is that it's supposed to be cheap and cheerful but Wimpy "ain't" cheap anymore!👍
Love your reviews Greeno! Just found your channel. Oh what memories! In the 70’s my mum would take us there for our birthday. I always had the Wimpy Grill. I loved the sweetcorn relish, tomato relish and gherkin relish they used to have on the tables. And dessert was always a Banana boat or Knickerbocker Glory. For some reason, the Brown Derby and ice cream were for the adults! 😂. Other than the odd fish and chips, we never really had fast food.
Yes, it was a real treat back in the day wasn't it. Most of the fast food we had was at home (my Mum was a whizz at knocking up eggs, chips and beans for dinner!)
Great review Greeno. This takes me back to my childhood too. Last time I visited was 1981. It was a friends birthday and his dad took us to see Raiders of The Lost Ark 😂. I distinctly remember being told off by a member of staff for not finishing my burger 😂.
Great review Greeno!! i remember that when il was a kid my parents and me eat sometimes by Wimpy.i was so free to do some research, Wimpy comes from the animationseries Popye 1930 US. Wimpy is a personage that eat that eat a dozen hamburgers at the (quik) time and is a friend of Popye who takes his remarkable powers out of a can with spinache.i come frome the Netherlands i am sorry to discover that Wiimpy restaurants not exist annymore in Europe, the last Wimpy closed his doors in Holland in 1985. Still it brings back alot of good memorys to me and much other people !👍👍👍
I remember the canteen in my middle school in Dorset - they would happily sell you chips with fried bread and 2 fried eggs as a lunch for a 9 year old!!
I was literally trying to explain the Four Yorkshiremen sketch to my wife and child 90 minutes ago. Wimpy is the slightly apologetic version of what fast food should be. It is not good but part of me is glad it perseveres.
@@GreenoEats The first burger, you opened it up, played with the insides, then toyed with it like it was a basketball for ages, rotating it and fiddling with it from hand to hand. The second burger, you licked mayo off your hands and carried on. It's not nice to watch when it's someone else's meal. Surely you can cut a piece off with a knife, eat your own food, then taste theirs at the end of the review to allow for the extra content and time. Let the kids eat though please !!! 🙄
Great review! When I first visited the UK in 1977, I remember seeing Wimpy's everywhere, I'm from the states but I had heard of them. When I next visited in 2018, I don't remember seeing any in London. The meal looked better than Micky D's, I'll give you but the price seemed pretty high considering what it was. Thanks Greano (and family).
This one is difficult for me 😥As a child, I grew up in Dublin, but whenever we came over to London my dear mother would always (without question or exception) treat us to a Wimpy; it was my treat for every trip we had to make to London. Now as a 50+ adult (no, I will not define the +) I still need (need not want) to frequently visit London; in fact I am in London about 60% of the time for work and when not working I am in Dublin. I am lucky enough to live within easy distance of 2 Wimpy restaurants; there used to be 3 but one closed to be replaced by a typical curry house 🤮 Greeno, your order for yourself was so close to mine! Great minds think alike! I hate it when reviewers review Wimpy and judge i solely on a burger; you need to try one of their mixed grills to get the full picture! My "always and never changing order" is a Wimpy Grill (not International, so no bacon and no lettuce) and a "Coke"! Whomever wants to start a disagreement between "Coke" and "Pepsi", I shall gladly ignore you! I then always follow it with a Brown Derby and a Filter Coffee. So my bill is always £20+ just for me. However, for me it is about memories of my best childhood moments and they are priceless! So if it was £100+ would I pay it? Probably yes! Albeit less often. Currently and on average I go to Wimpy once every week; usually on a Wednesday since that is their special deals and new item launch days; even if the price is irrelevant to me, I am no eejit. 😝 If I want a Pork Bender, I will order a Pork Bender. Bendy my @$$ Given the other unsavoury use for the word "Coke", will they ban people from using that word and throw them out? The whole world has gone mad with all this PC nonsense! So it is always going to be a 5/5 or 10/10 etc "trip down memory lane" from me, but I totally respect your 3/5 without question, so thank you for the review and the "Greeno Green Light". And thank you for not just relying on a boring old cheese burger for the review; as too many often do, because although there is nothing wrong with a Wimpy cheese burger and I do like them as a quick takeaway snack, that for a review would have been a bit daft. 👍
As always, thanks Gary for your interesting comment. It's been fascinating to me this evening to read so many people's memories of Wimpy from back in the day. I am pleased it evoked happy memories of your childhood trips - although it seems with your continued visits to Wimpy you didn't really need me to do so :-) I am glad I took the kids with me, firstly because it meant they got to share in my nostalgia for the place, but also that it meant I could order 3 different things to try (I would have gone for the International Grill anyway) - they enjoyed the food too. A bit like yourself, I will always order a Coke, even if I know they only have other brands - for me there are certain things which transcend brands.... my Dyson is a hoover for example :-) Having tried it for the first time in years I will return, not so much because I think it is great quality food, but just because of the memories it evokes for me too, and to be fair the kitchen did a decent job with the ingredients they were given.
I found a wimpy a couple of years ago when I was travelling to my daughters. I really enjoyed it and the memories! I had a really good coffee there as well. Far better than macdonalds in my opinion. My little grandkids were traumatised when I told them this😅 . Glad your daughters enjoyed it. Lovely review as always❤
@@rosemarymee Speaking of gorilla, with the state of the world at the moment, I am not 100% sure what meat they use 😝 This is my favourite video so far. The memories are simply priceless.
The food looked awufl what do u expect with beige food. Your so called 'International grill' looked like a transport cafe meal. All in all a very disappointing then again its Wimpy.
Yep - the name for the International Grill hasn't changed since I was a kid - maybe they thought that the burger and sausage weren't traditional British foods, so it sounded exotic back in the 70s!
I see this review has dragged a few of us old farts out. I probably last went there back in the 70s when a meal out was a rare family treat. Me and my brother used to have hamburger and chips and my dad had the knickerbocker glory. He used to rave about it but wouldn't eat anything else there. Cheers for another great review Greeno!
I have loved hearing these little stories people have from back in the day - and yes - it has possibly demonstrated the demographic of people watching my videos ha ha!
Good Evening Greeno. Thank you very much for taking me back to my Teenager years. My Friends and I, would travel in to our Local City of Peterborough on a Saturday afternoon and go the Wimpy Burger Bar. We would just by Lots and lots of Burgers, Chips and Coke Floats for all of us Friends. This was way before MacDonald's, Burger King, KFC, to name but a few. Very Happy and Joyful days of having Fun and just Enjoying Life. We did not even have any Mobile Phones, we actually used to Talk to each other Greeno. What a Great era the 1980's. Thank you. Jonathan/ Peterborough.
Welcome back Mr G family. Is it school term time this week for your daughter. Nice little treat for family. With coffee, the big brekkie is around £15 I guess.
When I was a lad in the sixties Wimpy was just a pale beef patty covered in fried onions on a floury little white bun. The smell of a wimpy joint was amazing, the burgers less so. They appear to have really ramped up to US-level menus.
Wimpy was the first ever fast food joint to arrive in Bangkok, Thailand, nowadays there are McDonald’s, kfc and pizza express everywhere .. but good old wimpy was the first.
Wimpy is a proper old school hamburger restaurant. They have been around since the 1950s. I had a meal deal of a quarter pounder with cheese and chips and soft drink. I had the dessert of Brown Derby with ice cream. I agree with you that a hash brown doesn't belong in a hamburger. Almost got killed off by McDonald's and Burger King.
Yes - and they don't seemto be doing much to attract that yonger crowd now - so I do worry they will becme extinct as their customer base becomes, well extinct too I guess ha ha!
I last visited a Wimpy in 1957, prior to being posted overseas. It was then a one trick pony, if you liked burger patty you were okay. Wimpy was original American, which really found its roots in both the UK and SA. I don't remember what it tasts like, but yours looked fine for fast food. Over here in N.A Burger King took over the franchises. Great review as always.
Ah, I see, that's why there are no Wimpy restaurants in the US now then - they are much fewer and further between here than when I was a kid - McD and BK kind of kicked them out of the high streets really.
I worked in a Wimpy part time in the 90's - At that time, the burger patties, pork bendy, breaded fish, buns ect all came from a single nominated supplier. Pleasure Foods (PF) handled this side of things but sold the rights in 2007.
I'd be surprised if, as franchisees, they're given much license to buy outside of nominated suppliers - after all the brand will want that consistency.
@@GreenoEats True, after more digging, Famous Brands handles that. I will edit comment !!! I could do without the government sending me to jail for spreading mis information online, lol
HI Greeno Hope you and your family enjoyed your time in france, glad to have you back,if Gary was there just leave him there to enjoy his quality food that he always goes on about. Well Greeno I have not been back to Wimpy for years I remember when there food was so greasy and fries were yuk.also the Ketchup was not heinz just some cheap vinegar breand Yes restaurants looked modern and cleaner and more expensive and have no intension of going back Food mark 1/5
OMG Greeno, what have you done making this clip, the last time i went to Wimpy was in 1973 and i was 7, my dad took me out for my Birthday as my mam was away for a very important job interview. I still have the receipt from Weybridge in Surrey to this day. My dad had the Wimpy grill at 36p I had a cheeseburger at 21p and then the Knickerbocker Glory at a massive 25p After drinks etc the total bill was a massive £1-01p. The sausage you talk of was called the Bender then, i remember it well, as you could have a Bender in a bun which us kids then thought so funny. As was the tradition in those days i was sick later after eating so much🤢 Chris.
Great review - it took me back to when I used to go to the one under the Old Street / City Road roundabout in London when I was a kid - thought it was so glam! Yeah the name 'bendy' jarred a bit so had to look it up.... language is a funny thing 😅
Over here in Ireland we’d call that a “rip off republic”. Jaysis the price of things these days. Great review and lovely to see you out with the whole family. 👍
Similar to the coke float, If I have chocolate ice cream I like to poor coke over it, you get the same froth as well as thin frozen layer of coke covering the ice cream. As the ice cream melts it combines with the coke to create a chocolaty sauce.
I bet you were happy with the AFC Bournemouth comeback yesterday Greeno! A coke float! Crikey that brought back a memory!! 😀 I had my 5th or 6th birthday in an original Wimpy in Walsall many moons ago. I always remember Wimpy to be in more direct competition with the famous Golden Arches establishment. Hey top video brought back some memories mate! Take care to you all! …..Smithy
That Cherries comeback was madness wasn't it Smithy ! I was fuming when we were 2-0 down to a pretty poor Everton side - just goes to show - always play to the final whistle! Glad this video helped bring back some happy childhood memories pal !!
I've been to a number of Wimpy's & they do vary a fair amount, mostly they are acceptable, there's the one or two that are a little poor. The one you visited seems a good one, the food looked well cooked & the restaurant seemed nice & clean. In my opinion the best Wimpy is the one in Worthing, excellent food, staff & service, it also has a wonderful conservatory at the rear, making it nice to sit there, very pleasant indeed , try it if your ever in the area. Yes a little expensive , so I visit only once a month these day's. Good review, 👍
I love Wimpy. I've been having them since the mid 70's and the one I used is still going strong. I have moved and now don't have one any where near me.
I haven't had a Wimpy for 40 years either. I used to go to the Basingstoke one when I was there shopping on a Saturday. If I remember, it was quite nice back then. I'm afraid, in 2024, it doesn't look very impressive at all. It all looks very generic, mass produced. The burger patties look like cow turds that have dried in the sun! 😄 I don't remember there being any Wimpys in Cornwall when I was a kid in the 70s. Maybe, but I certainly didn't go in one until the 80s (see above). Burgers and pizzas were all new to me as I didn't grow up eating that kind of stuff. I made up for it in my 20s! There isn't a comparison between a Wimpy and school dinners. My school dinners were really good back in the day. We had really good cooks who didn't have a tight budget to work by. Swanage is a very beautiful, unhyped part of the country.
All those looked ok . . Your meal was nice . . No Whimpey here in NZ that i know of . We did have 1 here in Hamilton but ended up closeing once Mcds arrived . . Nice to see younger reviewers with you today . . Dont forget to checkout The Warning . Take care till next time . Bye from NZ👍👋🇳🇿🍻twa
Yeah, I think in many parts of the world the expansion of other fast food burger joints killed them off. The Greenager did check out The Warning, said she thought they weren't bad, but there was something about the singer's voice which she wasn't a fan of, but couldn't put her finger on. So that wasn't much help haha !
I like your reviews as you don’t constantly moan about price all the time. So many other reviewers do nothing but moan about prices these days. I understand price is a factor, but reviewers are tending to judge the food more on price than anything else.
Price is a factor - but I prefer to look at it as whether it's value for money. If something is £1 and awful then I'll say so - if it's £100 and amazing I will say so, and vice versa!
I didn’t grow up in England, so don’t have the sentimental attachment. Several years ago I wandered into one out of curiosity. The burger reminded me of those I had in my high school cafeteria at lunch.
Used to enjoy wimpy back in the late 70's.Waitress service back then from what l recall.Food looked half decent for the price and cutlery/crockery makes a nice change.Staff picking/wiping noses on sleeves and running fingers through their hair would put me off going there. Good review 👍.

Ha ha, lots of long gone high street names there!
It was either Wimpy or Pizza Hut!

Blimey, that is a very comprehensive history, thanks for that 🙂
Our wimpy in Scunthorpe didn't end up as a burger king it was turned in to a McDonald's franchise mid 80s, all the same staff etc worked there, even the interior wasn't changed much, but it offered inferior burgers and chips to the wimpy..
Epic.

I had no idea Wimpy still existed. I remember going there in the 1960s. I seem to remember that the burgers used to come from a tin back then, but that was all we knew. I don’t think I’d be tempted to try Wimpy again. Wonderful view, btw.
It’s definitely stuck in a bit of a 70s time warp, but for a bit of nostalgia it was fine. Not gonna win any awards 🤣
I think it depends on which branch of Wimpy. I live in South London and our local Wimpy does a roaring trade. It is never empty and on Friday afternoons and Saturday you are lucky to get a table. They are also on Deliveroo and do well on that.

It certainly does a job - although I just feel it might need to move with the times a little to survive longer term

Kings Lynn is the few Wimpy's in existence, still eat there myself on occasion.
A Bender in a bun, followed up by a Brown Derby. What a time to be alive...!! Oh, and going for a Wimpy was also a treat!!

Ha ha - that would have been somewhere in the West Bromwich area then I suppose!
All these Total Karens comments are absolute bs .At least, it wasn't man mayo 😂😂😂 great review, mate. Top channel.
Brought back memories of my first experience of eating out alone aged 15 back in the late 70s with a pound pocket money.
Wimpy in glamorous Birkenhead.
Thanks for the memories and great to see them still going.
Glad to have jogged the old memory bank for some happy times!
We did still get table service, so that was a positive, plus cutlery and plates. The food was basic but adequate.
I haven't seen a Wimpy for years, there used to one down the road from us when we lived in London. Was always a treat on an occasional Saturday night. That was in the late 60s early 70s, good time's not like this mad world we live in today.
Happy memories of simpler times huh 🙂
Wimpy, now there's a blast from the past, I had my 10th birthday there one year, Mr Wimpy scared the living daylights out of me 😂. I found myself wanting a coke float, that chicken stack looked great, most definitely something I'd try. Another great review Greeno.
Glad you enjoyed the video, and it brought back some memories (both good and traumatic seemingly!)
Ha! Ha!🙃😄 Glad you & your girls enjoyed it though Greeno! x J x
Oh my goodness - that must have been awful - can't say I blame you for not rushing back!
It seems consistent, I'll give it that - very much like I remembered it from back in the 80s :-)
Also, I don't want to ruin it, but Swanage appears to be the only place in the UK not hit by terminal decline...
And what did the kids make of Wimpy in comparison to the usual fast food joints?
@GreenoEats hi Greeno. They loved it. They can't wait to go back. Our nearest BK or UFK is in Ross Vegas (Ross on Wye), meaning it's eat in or cold chips by the time it gets home. My daughter is really picky with food and she loved it.
As an aside.. BK at Warminster services on the A36 has to be the best BK I've tried.. despite the location.
sure your daughters love you eating half their meals LMAO
2 bites of each, plus they tried some of mine.
Wimpy Kingsize without a doubt every Saturday as a 15yr old back in the 80's.... Loved them
Sounds like it was a real treat back in the day!
But that £20 note in your wallet may have gone through the hands of a prostitute. Your comment makes no sense.
It has indeed - although the menu isn't much different there now than it was back 50 years ago!!
Wimpy was all we had back then. Use to enjoy it. Much of the menu was the same and was nice to have china for a change.
That's right - it was a real treat when the oprions out there were a lot more limited.
Not a single branch in Wales nowadays - clearly the culinary world there has moved on more than in some other areas of the country !!
Swanage is a beautiful town lovely views of the sea front Greano. You were very kind with the scoring lol.
Yeah, my nostalgia got the better of me I think !
Yeah there’s something about eating a proper burger in a diner or restaurant that just can’t be replicated at home isn’t there.
Wimpys does “fill a hole” but only on the way out.

Ha ha - I love the little stories like this that are coming up as a result of this video!!
Still it brings back alot of good memorys to me and much other people !👍👍👍
Yeah lots of great little stories coming in the comments section :-)
School dinners greeno what school did you go to
I remember the canteen in my middle school in Dorset - they would happily sell you chips with fried bread and 2 fried eggs as a lunch for a 9 year old!!
I was literally trying to explain the Four Yorkshiremen sketch to my wife and child 90 minutes ago. Wimpy is the slightly apologetic version of what fast food should be. It is not good but part of me is glad it perseveres.
Ha ha, small world ! I like the way Wimpy is sticking to it's guns, but I feel it will have to adapt somewhat to survive eventually
Course.....we 'ad it tough.....
So 40 years so your were 5 years old then
If only Neil, if only !!
Greeno use to love going to Wimpy as a treat back in the 1970's brings back very happy memories!
Glad you enjoyed a bit of nostalgia with this one!
Can't believe you ate the girls' food for the review. Good lord. 🙄
I tasted two bites of food from their plates so that I could review all of the meals, blimey!!!
o Lord not good 😮
Great review!
Glad you enjoyed the review ! The Wimpy brnad has certainly thinned out on the high streets of Britain over the last 40 yrs
I am lucky enough to live within easy distance of 2 Wimpy restaurants; there used to be 3 but one closed to be replaced by a typical curry house 🤮
Greeno, your order for yourself was so close to mine! 😝
If I want a Pork Bender, I will order a Pork Bender.
I am pleased it evoked happy memories of your childhood trips - although it seems with your continued visits to Wimpy you didn't really need me to do so :-)
I am glad I took the kids with me, firstly because it meant they got to share in my nostalgia for the place, but also that it meant I could order 3 different things to try (I would have gone for the International Grill anyway) - they enjoyed the food too.
A bit like yourself, I will always order a Coke, even if I know they only have other brands - for me there are certain things which transcend brands.... my Dyson is a hoover for example :-)
Having tried it for the first time in years I will return, not so much because I think it is great quality food, but just because of the memories it evokes for me too, and to be fair the kitchen did a decent job with the ingredients they were given.
@@a1joiner5 glad you enjoyed it, and like for so many people seemingly it has evoked happy memories of times gone by !
@@GaryG1974 My uncle would always call that “a mixed gorilla” and we would laugh obediently as if he had never said it before…
@@rosemarymee Speaking of gorilla, with the state of the world at the moment, I am not 100% sure what meat they use 😝
This is my favourite video so far. The memories are simply priceless.
Putting sides (hash browns, onion rings) inside the burger is the absolute bottom-of
-the-barrel of fast food gimmicks.
I have to agree, not a fan of it myself
Happy sunday,Greeno 😊 We dont have Wimpy in Germany, cant wait for your review 😊
Hi Jessi, I hope you are well. I must be honest I do think you’re missing out with anything regarding Wimpy! 😀
Thanks Jessi :-) (I guess from your oher comments you already saw it haha!)
@@GreenoEats yes, it was a good review, thanks Greeno!
I am doing pretty good, how are you doing? Booked Oasis tickets yet? 😊@@theabandonedhunter3604
Glad to have brought back memories of some happy times 🙂 in retrospect, life does seem to have been a little simpler back then huh!
Welcome back Mr G family. Is it school term time this week for your daughter. Nice little treat for family. With coffee, the big brekkie is around £15 I guess.
Thanks 🙂
Hi Greeno, wimpy is where I learned to grill the inside of the roll, memories m8, ❤.
Nice little hit of nostalgia huh :-)
When I was a lad in the sixties Wimpy was just a pale beef patty covered in fried onions on a floury little white bun. The smell of a wimpy joint was amazing, the burgers less so. They appear to have really ramped up to US-level menus.
I only remember them from the late 70s / early 80s - pretty muc the same as they are now as I recall !
Wimpy was the first ever fast food joint to arrive in Bangkok, Thailand, nowadays there are McDonald’s, kfc and pizza express everywhere .. but good old wimpy was the first.
I wonder how Wimpy was received in Bangkok back in the day?
@@GreenoEats I hear it was a revelation - kind of like when McDonald’s came to Romford.
The brown roll, finely diced onion and the special sauce was a thing of beauty back in late 70’s/early 80’s.
They still use the brown roll on some of their burgers!
@@GreenoEats it shouldn’t work but it did.
HI Greeno Hope you and your family enjoyed your time in france, glad to have you back,if Gary was there just leave him there to enjoy his quality food that he always goes on about.
Well Greeno I have not been back to Wimpy for years I remember when there food was so greasy and fries were yuk.also the Ketchup was not heinz just some cheap vinegar breand
Yes restaurants looked modern and cleaner and more expensive and have no intension of going back
Food mark 1/5
As far as I know Gary was in the UK the whole time I was out in France ! Wimpy isn't the best, but it was nice to evoke some fond memories!
I have Wimpy with my youngest son every weekend.
I love it.
Glad you enjoy it 🙂
@GreenoEats My mum met my Dad in the Wimpy that used to be on Bethnal Green Road......it must be down to that 😂
OMG Greeno, what have you done making this clip, the last time i went to Wimpy was in 1973 and i was 7, my dad took me out for my Birthday as my mam was away for a very important job interview.
I still have the receipt from Weybridge in Surrey to this day.
My dad had the Wimpy grill at 36p
I had a cheeseburger at 21p
and then the Knickerbocker Glory at a massive 25p
After drinks etc the total bill was a massive £1-01p.
The sausage you talk of was called the Bender then, i remember it well, as you could have a Bender in a bun which us kids then thought so funny.
As was the tradition in those days i was sick later after eating so much🤢
Chris.
Glad to have jogged some happy memories for you Chris. Those prices on you receipt seem almost unbelievable these days don’t they!
@@GreenoEats Your not kidding.
Chris.
I am 71, from Holland. Wimpy was the best. and the best ketchup as I remember well in a red tomato.
Lots of people remember those old ketchup holders!
Great review - it took me back to when I used to go to the one under the Old Street / City Road roundabout in London when I was a kid - thought it was so glam! Yeah the name 'bendy' jarred a bit so had to look it up.... language is a funny thing 😅
Yes, it was a real treat back in the day wasn’t it!
Over here in Ireland we’d call that a “rip off republic”. Jaysis the price of things these days. Great review and lovely to see you out with the whole family. 👍
Thanks Philip, it's a lot of money for the kind of food you can get in any standard cafe really isn't it.
Giving Gordon a run over Wimpy. 56.00 getting close to AUD 100.00. Over the top for an Aussie Take away.
I think it’s expensive for what it is.
Similar to the coke float, If I have chocolate ice cream I like to poor coke over it, you get the same froth as well as thin frozen layer of coke covering the ice cream. As the ice cream melts it combines with the coke to create a chocolaty sauce.
nice - I will have to try that sometime - like a working class affogato :-)
@@GreenoEats exactly mate! Although I had Everton and Bradford on my bet which both let me down! 😂 all the best and congratulations on the win!
A conservatory huh - sounds like a posh Wimpy that !
I love Wimpy. I've been having them since the mid 70's and the one I used is still going strong. I have moved and now don't have one any where near me.
Ah that's a shame, you'll have to pop back to your old stomping ground time to time for the Wimpy fix 🙂
Sadly no Wimpys in my part of the country but brought back happy teenage memories 👏keep up the good work Greeno
Thanks Debbie, glad you enjoyed it
I haven't had a Wimpy for 40 years either.
Yeah, Wimpy does feel like it hasn’t moved with the culinary times.
Wimpy Grill was my go to as a kid in the 70s, loved the sausage bent around the tomato.
The menu hasn't changed much since then!!
Very much that kind of vibe yes !
Used to enjoy wimpy back in the late 70's.Waitress service back then from what l recall.Food looked half decent for the price and cutlery/crockery makes a nice change.Staff picking/wiping noses on sleeves and running fingers through their hair would put me off going there. Good review 👍.
It was basically cafe food at Five Guys pricing - glad you enjoyed the review :-)
