    The best thing about crab rangoon is that tons of restaurants don't even make them anymore. They've been rebranded as "cream cheese rangoon" so that they don't need to put crab in

      Case in point, there are two "Asian" restaurants in my area. One sells crab rangoon with crab (probably imitation.) The other sells "fried wontons" so they don't have to put crab in it.

    I used to work in a 2 Michelin stars restaurant on the French riviera a few years back. We used to make lobster ravioli with this shape. The dough was made with the Lobster rod, so it was dark green when raw and turned bright orange once cooked! Pretty cool to see!
    And also we would refine the shape with scissors so the edges are nice and crisp.

    One thing that I've seen several local chinese places do that might explain the lack of visible crab in the filling is that they tend to use a blender or food processor to make the filling...it tends to leave you with a mixed puree that lacks a lot of the texture of crab, but gives you an interesting shift in taste.

The beauty of wonton is that you can pretty much stuff them with anything as I've made salmon locs wonton and even a spinach kale cream cheese wonton. @xhthepikachu Gaming Considering the texture of crab in something like this is either going to be shredded meat, or slightly rubbery, you could probably sub out crab for some other fish or chicken, maybe certain varieties of mushroom? Not gonna lie... I've had 'fancy' Crab Rangoon before that had tons of jumbo lump crab meat in them... and I kinda preferred the cheap shit. I think for me it's just one of those foods that is supposed to be shitty.

    • @saysoun752
      @saysoun752 3 роки тому +39

      It's comfort food and most comfort food foods are cheap. They're not meant to be super fancy. I love crab rangoon but I make mine very simple, a little bit of crab meat, cream cheese and sugar and that's it. Very simple and quick.

    • @RachelV.
      @RachelV. 3 роки тому +8

      I'm the same way. I prefer more cream cheese than crab because I usually eat it when I order takeout and want comfort food.

      I like crab with sweet and sour sauce. But if it's going to have cream cheese, might as well go all cream cheese wonton, no crab, and no sauce. The combination of cream cheese and sweet and sour sauce or crab is just gross.

    As a person who lives in Alaska (where most of the commercial crab is caught) king crab is good don’t get me wrong but.. Dungeness crab is so much tastier. It has a rich buttery body meat and is the perfect size. The flavor is rich and creamier than king crab.
    People always judge a crab by its size… but it’s smaller cousin is more tasty and deserves more love 😥😂

      You could probably use lion's mane mushrooms in place of crab, because then it'll still taste like crab, but still be vegetarian. Lion's mane mushroom tastes like crab when it's cooked, but it's also really good for you... There are also other mushrooms that taste like seafood in general...
