I understand that the community wants people to search for themselves rather than "stl? stl? stl?" but i would be really nice to have a centralized form or database of the basics.
Another advantage is for those of us that don't game - we simply enjoy painting the figures. I can scale them however I like. Marines at 130% are a joy to paint and detail. Since they aren't for tabletop pay, it's all good.
Exactly my reasoning for printing, I just enjoy the painting and look of them. Tabletop seems interesting but not really something I would get into deep enough to justify gw prices

A Little payback is not the end of the world. IF the price of plastic were that high, a light switch would cost $200.
Remember the music industry in the late 90s and early 00s when they fought against transitioning to digital music and fought to keep CDs relevant? Sure, they won the court cases, but they lost the overall war, as you can't stop technological progress. GW doesn't seem to have learned anything from history, and seem to be going down the same path. If they switched to also selling printable files, they could make easy profits, by passing the manufacturing costs on to consumers, cutting out shipping and storage costs, and focus on creating content, rather than wasting money on lawyers to prop up a dying business model.
It's like Metallica vs napster. They must think if they start planning for the future that they will have to admit defeat instead of making extra money that they wouldn't normally

Check out one page rules. They have a set of 'alien hive' minis that while stylistically distinct from 'Nids, have all the right models to replicate a Tyranid army.
I love your videos I recently stumbeled unto them. I used to be into Warhammer 40k I would spend most my time of painting but I stopped collecting because of it being so expensive (gw increasing the prices) and at a certain point it not being accesable to me anymore. But this is getting me interested again into the hobby and also seeing what is possible with 3d printing! Great vid ☀️
Ive got loads from a few years ago, but just getting back into with a new printer. I paint sooooo much and can't justify more armies with the cost of things without 3D printing. My wife fully endorses this too :D
I used to play 40K back in the 80s and early 90s but haven't been involved outside books and video games for a long time. But awhile back I dug out a bunch of old Templars and decided to give it another go. On my wife I justified a grown man buying toys for himself by using the excuse of getting my niece and nephews into the hobby, because they're getting to that age where they could start getting in trouble, and though we do a lot of canoeing and hiking and stuff, I said I wanted to have something to do with them inside when it rains and during winter. So they were introduced to Syama Pedersen's Astartes Project, and the DOW video game series, then Baldemort and Arch and they ate up all my Horus Heresy books. In truth I was looking for a way to save myself some scratch by finding something to keep me from spending money at the bar out of sheer boredom. Then after shooting my mouth off and getting them excited, GW prices began to sink in... x4... and how pissed off my sister and my cousin were going to be at me for getting their kids hooked on plastic crack and the most expensive money pit in the entire gaming world in the form of a neverending meta. As for saving money by staying out of the Dewdrop Inn? I thought, for what this is going to end up costing me I might as well be daydrinking all week long and buying rounds... Laying down Hollywood rails on the bar and 5hi7 FFS... Then a Gamza video came up in my YT suggestions. Pretty soon I was watching all kinds of 3D printing videos and going through STL file sharing sites. Then I discovered Grimdark Future and my a55 was saved. I bought a Mars2 Pro and told the kids this is how we're starting, and if they like it and seriously want to get into it, we can play Horus Heresy and I showed them my $360 box and they all looked at me sideways and started gating off calling me a hypocrite and I said "Shut up kid and paint your damned nuns!" But seriously I'm not spending a ton of money on 9th Edition for myself and 3 kids. I'd rather get second hand 8th Edition stuff for them until 10th comes out, and we're having a ton of fun playing Poorhammer and painting our bootleg minis anyway.
Agreed, if they want the game to thrive, the models shouldn't cost me an arm to support the creators and engage. That's one of the things that almost made me not even bother to try playing Warhammer until my bud bought a 3D printer and we found it saved us alot.
Love the idea of 3D printing! Thinking of buying a printer to get back into the hobby after over a decade of not playing. I like having custom models, so why wouldn't I like printing custom models for my armies? And imagine the bits! 🤤
People that cant print leaving the negative comments, 3 d printing is so aweseome, it is the future of craftsmanship, digitally tuneable and customizable!
To be honest all the time to finish the miniature from assembling the model digitally, getting it to have the pose you like, to printing and refining it physically would take a lot less time than waiting for the delivery from GW, at least in my case. And also it's fun (well it looks fun, I haven't done it, I bought the printer yesterday and am now scouring the internet looking fand as you said you can get your hands on some cool looking or even exclusive models! I broke my first two models trying to remove supports as I didn't know you remove them after putting the print in warm water for a couple minutes.
How has the printing been since this comment brother? I don't really use that trick of hot water but I really should with the amount of parts I've broken by accident taking supports off
@@battlebrothersam great, thank you, this hot water trick works just fine, was printing a space marine just to see how he would turn out, took 2 tries to print the right shoulder properly and 3 for the power sword. Resin printers seem to struggle with flat surfaces, the print just kinda droops down and messes itself up, maybe I could position stuff differently, and when I was printing the sword the flat side was facing down so first time a part of it came out paper thin for some reason, and the 2nd time it was bent down, so I positioned it with the edge facing down, took longer to print but that time it printed well. Right now I'm thinking that for these tiny miniatures I shouldn't need more than one minute in the curing station. I only have translucent green resin right now so it's easier to spot overexposure, if it's overexposed the resin turns white. Also turns out that when at first I was setting up the printer I was unscrewing and configuring the lower platform, not the one that goes up and is actually configurable, makes sense why I couldn't print anything properly. So far every single print, successful or not, feels like invaluable knowledge and experience also I've been sent a couple channels where people share STLs, so yeah, the fun haven't even started yet :>
GW and others provide a service but they want 350% mark price, because some folks will dish that out, good for them. but id still like to play so ima do what i got to do and not go broke. I simply wont enter any cash prize or high value tournys unless the organizers are fine with it. Some store simply want people to turn out and showing up is like all i got to offer sometimes haha. you could play this game with stick and rocks if your really wanted to, the models just make it waay more fun.
I was hoping you could cover what kind of ventilation you need to do this from home? I'm interested in starting, but I don't think the family would appreciate the smell.
It would be cool if the community and designers had like agreed terms for each set. And then we could have a spreadsheet that has all the official sets, and then their proxy name. It could have several different ones, as different designers would have different takes, but if I see an official set that is out of my price range, I could find what to search for. If such a thing doesn't exist already
I'm just like yourself. I've saved a ton of money. But I also have way to many armies now. I currently have every faction in 40k. It's definitely a hobby in itself. And it's also fun hunting for those precious precious stls
my thoughts are, if you do 3d printing JUST for one warhammer 40k army, it might be only slightly less expensive than buying them at your LGS. However if you are doing more than just one army and a lot more things with 3d printing and also do it as a hobby, it makes a lot of sense financially. Personally, i like to collect files for 40k figures. I started with 4th edition where there are lot of pewter and just beginning with the newer plastic sets. 3d printing allows for more customization of pieces without HAVING to kitbash to get close to what you want, again IMO. also for some of the things like a thunderhawk gunship, soooooooooooo much cheaper than getting it from forgeworld. also, if you mess up a piece, you can just print a new one.
Not really a 3D printer now can be had for $100 on sale. Sunlu ABS resin is $24 per liter. $150 won't even get you a GW army unless it's second hand. Most armies worth playing in 40k are going to run $700+. I can print a entire $700+ GW army with 2 bottles of sunlu abs resin and a $100 Voxelab Proximo printer. So a savings of $500+ on the first army.
I like 3d printing, I just feel bad for doing it. I got a pack on etsy that was basically an unknown STL pack called space bugs, which yea I should have assumed. But it ended up being a file full of actual Tyranids, I feel bad having them but I do want to use them
Video may be 4 months old, but after everything G. W. Is going just like Wizards with MTG. So other sources to do my hobbies is much appreciated. Cheers.
Hey mate you're videos got me interested in getting my first 3d printer but I just wanted to ask, do you need alot of space? And do you have any experience with fumes and other chemicals ruining a room or staining anything?
Getting a 3d printer was the best thing I have done for my hobby career, I have the rare problem of my closest hobby store being a 9+ hour drive away (I live in the middle of Australia... literally)
Great video, i have a Mono X, i also have inlarged them to about 25% larger than tabletop. I dont play but i really enjoy just printing and painting them, which in itself can become an addiction. I seem to have an issue with the bottom of the heels, but i watched your other video and id say its support issues, which im still learning.
If big companies don't want us seeking new/shady alternatives, then they need to be more consumer friendly. I cant remember who said this, but a person's hobby is representative of a culture they partake in. Be it movies, music, games, or art, why should culture only be accessible to those with money to burn?
What I'm curious about is how prevalent viruses are in the files. I think that's why a lot of people ask is because they are wanting verified safe ones. I know they have "safe" ones on cults but I was unsure about the others.
I print for fun. Never printed any 40k (yet). GW will still get my money for all my plastic marines. I'm still a fan of building and painting marines. But a destroyed titan for a scenery piece, or some exotic shoulder pads? If I can find a file that makes the game cool, yeah, i'm going to jump on it Everybody wins
Question for the community, I'm new to 40k and started an army but obviously having a 3d printer I want to start getting more out of that. My concern is how people at the shops would respond or if they would even notice. What's been people's experiences with trying to run their prints, any difference between the artistic takes vs as close to GW as possible?
From what I've heard it depends on the shop. Official GW stores have strict policies against non-gw minis, not letting you enter their official tournaments. But outside of GW specific stores I think it'll depend on the store and staff. But at the same time you'll hear now and then of people actually getting their 3d prints through without anyone noticing.
Depends on the manager of the GW shop, our local manager turns a blind eye as he knows we are more likely to buy things if we are in there playing, it also looks good to people interested in the hobby if every time they pass the store the shop and tables are always full with people playing.
My morals went out the window when i saw the prices for a few pieces of minis, plus i cant even get actual models in my country bcs they dont ship or sell here, and if i can its 3x more expensive than normally.
In the first minutes you said that you have used the elegoo mars and tried out it with the water washable one. Could you tell what settings do you have used? Best regards :)
Something you didn't mention is the cost of the second printer, or the third printer, oh look a 4K with a giant print bed I need to get that, then you need an FDM for the larger terrain so might as well get 4 or 5. Now where am I going to put all these printers well I guess I need a bigger house with a shop. Now I got that but I have all this room I should get a few more 3D printers, maybe a vinyl cutter and a CNC and a Laser Cutter it never stops.... One Page Rule and Titan Forge are great ways to get some really good models.
😂😂😂😂😂 I was laughing until it hit me... I have all these same thoughts! Surely it isint weird to want 5 saturn+ sized printers and a 3d printer farm of fdm printers 😐... 😂😂 Lol that was great
I'm having trouble finding titan STL, I've found a lot of other things that are cool and I like, even a warlord titan, but I can't find the smaller ones, warlord is kind of a lot.
I've spent over $40,000 in this hobbie counting paint studio game room table and everything else from GW so if I wanna print amodel or get recast I'll do just that they have got a lifetime worth of money from me.
How much isopropyl alcohol do you need for each kg of resin (approximately ofc)? I'm just got a printer and 1 kg water washable resin, thinking of switching to ABS-like for more durability.
Misleading title. Most of the video has nothing to do with where to find files. Its about 7 mins in that you finally do. Was hoping i would find some cool places to buy files from that I didnt know about
geez that makes so much sense. I just recently dived into the hobby of 3d printing so im still learning the intricacies of it all. Thanks for that tip though. Ive wondered why the really good models are so hard to find@@Enojadoland
I just would tell parts of the names of the model instead of links and let them try on all the sites, like if you wanna get a thunderhawk, just put ''potato patern'' and make some other cool discovery or maybe tell them the name of the modeler
If you’re focusing on the printing side more than the painting side then you’re not doing it right. I came back into 3D printing after several years where focusing on printing more than painting was actually the case, but today 3D printing is fairly dialed in. As long as you dial your printer with the resin your using in, you’ll get far more success than failure
As someone who is very into customization of figurines, I would be MUCH more comfortable ripping apart and heavily modifying something that I printed for 5 bucks (that I could easily reprint if I mess something up), than I would doing the same to a Marine (or God forbid something like a Knight or Titan) that came in a box of only ten for a hundred bucks *on sale*. This hobby has been so prohibitively expensive to get into, and if I mess up badly enough, then that is just throwing money in the trash with extra steps.
For me - to get the army visual I really really want for my custom chapter - will have to involve GW kits, various bits from assorted third party manufacturers and finding (and possibly modifying - well yes definitely modding) STL files to make the overly fuedal and ornate armored Astartes I want for an army. Though I am lucky as I don’t play anymore, cause, if GW were the only place around to play I would be fucked and possibly banned from the store. This is a project for me that has been in planning for 6+ years and now it will happen. - oh I forgot about the green stuff sculpting as well. It is insanity but it keeps me occupied and out of trouble.
I have experience with several and can confirm that all the main brands are roughly the same. The fragility of resin is partially up to the print settings, the more exposure you use when curing the more brittle they tend to be.that said there are absolutely brands of resin that are designed to not be brittle as well as additives for resin to change the properties.
I remember reading videogame message board post back in the days where people would remind others to still support their local Ebgames or Gamestop instead of purchasing games via XBL, PSN and Steam. Can you believe that? People would Strongly suggest you get dress and drive to the store and purchase your copy of X video game instead of downloading the game and never leaving your house. They feared what would happen to the Video Game industry, if everyone stopped shopping at Retail video game stores.
The same happened with music and napster, it's evolution and 3d printing is getting bigger everyday I still like looking through the paints in person though 😂 edit; at my flgs because they are a single store business and actually local.
I am not a conspiracy guy, but when it went to you saying “The big three are…” it went to super long unskippable ads (movie trailers so 3 minutes each) and then crashed so I had to reload…
As a casual figure painter, buying the odd model from GW isn't so bad, but they sure are expensive. I mainly build 1/48 scale aircraft and 1/35 armour models and I guess for a good 1/48 aircraft kit you are looking at around £50-80. i would like the model King Brodd from GW but £130? Really? Let me but this into context. I month ago I bought a 1/32 scale Messerschmitt 109 by a company call Zoukei Mura. It has full internal details consisting of engine, fuselage formers and internal wing structure. The engine even has the pistons moulded into the engine. Why? I don't know as they will never be seen unless you did a cross section of the engine as a kit bashing exercise. Needless detail? Yes, I think so. Anyway my point is this kit cost £79 and will take several weeks of modelling time to construct and then there is painting time, applying decals weathering etc on top of that. So I would say its a minimum of 2 months solid modelling time, more if the mojo goes and you start something else. King Brodd on the other hand, you can probably build in an afternoon and that includes cleaning up GW huge moulding gates. Large gates usually mean low pressure injection moulding and to be honest GW plastic is like toffee, very soft. I guess depending on how you paint it, it might take a couple of weeks to paint to a high standard. What I am trying to put across is the £/$ per hour of modelling cost. I am sure GW prices is why people are turning to 3D printing for proxy models. I have a basic resin printer which I got to print of detailing parts for my dios and models. I have also have printed of stuff from some companies on Patreon etc and the detail is fantastic. I am now considering getting a larger format 8K printer to get even more detail. If GW want to increase sales then they need to reduce their prices otherwise more and more people are just going to print their own minis. Lets face it. The details on printable minis is fine for table top gaming. Print a whole army and use GW rules to play with your mates. just don't take them to the local Warhammer shop to play with though lol. Come on GW, the balls in your court.

I'm so OLD Hammer. I remember being young, having an ok job...and at that time i could collect every army then, nobody thought greed needed to go over the top and playing for fun was the point. GW sold out to the Suits..... I've read inside papers, where the owners were out right insulting players...nerd stereotypes. I've seen the hobby become how much can i squeeze out a wallet.
I would buy their files
They could even make "citadel resin 🌈" lol
@@TheArchon1 they could even make their own branded printers and cleaner, Double down on the 3d printer realm. Hell even so basic DRM for the files. Look what steam has done and become
All I can say is thank you, and you're right; I have started to use crazy names to find files, and at the same time, I have seen many artists that are crazy talented. Yes, I spent the money on a printer, but if I can save money and print armies to share an experience with my kid, I wish I had at her age worth it!
Can you list a few space marine and imperial knight funny names?
Another good vid brother recycling your ipa when it gets cloudy after a few uses tip in in a clear empty pop bottle and leave it in a sunny window for a day or 3. All the resin should set and sink to the bottom then carefully tip the almost clear ipa through a paper resin strainer and its good to use again until cloudy simply repeat.
Brother Chris this is great advice! I really should follow it 😂 should it be done as soon as it starts getting cloudy or is there a point where its too late?
@@battlebrothersam I do it when i notice the fine detail of my prints not as crisp as they should be the same sort of time as when you know you need to change out your ipa
@@chris-ri1zu thanks for the reply brother! I'm going to try it soon when my IPA gets too cloudy
I'm glad I found your channel. I'm gonna get into the hobby once I move out of the apartment into a house. I've been researching and can't wait to start, make mistakes, learn and improve. Need ventilation with a new baby in the home.
Thanks for the content king. I've been doing a lot of research because I've been wanting start playing warhammer, but this lead me to the world of 3d printing. Now I'm gearing to start 3d printing my own/building/painting armies to use to play ONE PAGE RULES GRIM DARK and any other cool minis war games out there that are minis agnostic.
Thanks brother! i'm moving more towards one page rules recently, although the new daemons rules may be tempting! you'll save a ton of money 3d printing enjoy!
I’ll admit, I used to be against the idea, but with 3 kids, a wife, mortgage, medical bills….. I’m all for it. Had minimal success finding files, but it’s only been a month so I’m still looking. “Marine” and “Tyranid” are the ones I’m searching for. Thanks for the guidance!
It certainly helps brother
Check out one page rules. They have a set of 'alien hive' minis that while stylistically distinct from 'Nids, have all the right models to replicate a Tyranid army.
Be carful with all the dangerous fumes around your family, ventiled closed off place from the kids and wife to print best case. Have fun peinting pal
He finally starts talking about the topic at 7:47
Ive got loads from a few years ago, but just getting back into with a new printer.
I paint sooooo much and can't justify more armies with the cost of things without 3D printing.
My wife fully endorses this too :D
I love the hunt for minis 😅
Something brilliant about going down a follow hole on cults!
After taking over a decade off myself I'm glad I found 3d printing, I just wish it was around when I was younger lol
I've been buying water washable resin for $30 on Amazon, first print was a dreadnought leviathan and the detail is kickass
Wow that's cheap! The leviathan dreadnought was one of my first prints as well! Good choice 😁
Can I ask where you found the STL file? I have difficulties to find 40k STL files :(
@@oldlinkjo got that STL file off of Etsy
Great video! love the edit of STL, stl, StL, got the files

I'm working up to every faction but I get too distracted along the way lol
I don't buy GW miniatures, at all, but to support my store, I buy video games form there and Bolt Action figures for one of my IG armies.
my thoughts are, if you do 3d printing JUST for one warhammer 40k army, it might be only slightly less expensive than buying them at your LGS.
So a savings of $500+ on the first army.
spent the last 2 days just trying to find the model from your previous video, no luck.
Love your thinking. I'm doing it too.
Scanned stl files that str 1:1 are harder to get and usually cost money and you need to know were to get em ;)
I like 3d printing, I just feel bad for doing it. I got a pack on etsy that was basically an unknown STL pack called space bugs, which yea I should have assumed. But it ended up being a file full of actual Tyranids, I feel bad having them but I do want to use them
I for one welcome this new PrintHammer 420K hobby.
You are the captain leading the charge 😂
One Page Rules also makes some really good proxies. Especially you want to play Deamons or Zerg.
GW needs to offer official 3D Files

I do have a weird question, what would be a code name for Titans?
3D printing didn't help me play, but I enjoyed the painting. But without it, I wouldn't have gotten into the games and books
Admittedly, I have just been looking for a kit that is compatible with the primaris intercessors
I print for fun. Never printed any 40k (yet).
GW will still get my money for all my plastic marines. I'm still a fan of building and painting marines.
But a destroyed titan for a scenery piece, or some exotic shoulder pads? If I can find a file that makes the game cool, yeah, i'm going to jump on it
Everybody wins
If you find the naughty stl files they can't even tell once they are painted bro 😂😂😂
8:34 O...ooooo...OOOOOOO NOW I UNDERSTAND IT!!!
Really cool how GW will keep models they stopped producing in the datasheets
Thank you :))

If 3rd Printing is part of your hobby and you played 2nd Ed 40k try OPR. ;)
I've spent over $40,000 in this hobbie counting paint studio game room table and everything else from GW so if I wanna print amodel or get recast I'll do just that they have got a lifetime worth of money from me.
What’s your input on the Saturn 2 vs the Saturn 3?
If you’re playing a miniature agnostic game you can really customize your little plastic men.
What kind of game?
@@battlebrothersam a game that you can use any minis you want. The world is your bivalve.
Was hoping i would find some cool places to buy files from that I didnt know about
Honestly, it's best he doesn't talk about where to find files. He's already had 4+ designers stores nuked by GW from doing just that.
geez that makes so much sense. I just recently dived into the hobby of 3d printing so im still learning the intricacies of it all. Thanks for that tip though. Ive wondered why the really good models are so hard to find@@Enojadoland

How much time should I be exposing my models to UV light?
The 138gb mega file is still around if you know where to look 🤫
so where would one find this mega file?
Can you give me a hint where should I look for it?
I just would tell parts of the names of the model instead of links and let them try on all the sites, like if you wanna get a thunderhawk, just put ''potato patern'' and make some other cool discovery or maybe tell them the name of the modeler
What settings did u use

Maaan you sound so similar to Jim browning 😂 yous must drink at the same pub
True i dont get why 1 figur in heroforge coast 40-55 dollers only for 1 😢😢
For me - to get the army visual I really really want for my custom chapter - will have to involve GW kits, various bits from assorted third party manufacturers and finding (and possibly modifying - well yes definitely modding) STL files to make the overly fuedal and ornate armored Astartes I want for an army.
Virtual sculpting with 3d printing and green stuff sculpting is possibly the biggest rabbit hole lol
Do you know also some name for the stormcast or other aos army?
Unfortunately not!
Thnks for the video

Try this in Brazil, impossible!! Even with a 3D printer it is hard
Ah that's good to know so far I've only used elegoo but I've seen anycubic for really cheap ordering direct from China
The same happened with music and napster, it's evolution and 3d printing is getting bigger everyday
I still like looking through the paints in person though 😂 edit; at my flgs because they are a single store business and actually local.
@@battlebrothersam Agreed. Something novel about it. I buy more paint when I can touch it lol

And Codename for Elder ? ^^
Literally would have no interest in Warhammer without 3d printing.
