Anybody going into the ring with Joe Louis had brass balls. So what did we learn boys and girls if you want to be a contender knockout as many former champions as possible until you are the #1 contender and the champion has to come to you. 10% of all Joe Louis's fight for the next 10 years has to be one of the best deals in sports history besides Bobby Bonilla contract with the Mets. I had no idea James knocked Joe down that was a shocker. I knew James took a beating against Joe but he did make it 8 rounds that is massively impressive but that knockout by Joe was brutal. I loved the movie though probably Russell Crowe's best.
Would you consider doing a video about boxer's "brawlers" showmans? Boxers that weren't particularly good, and almost won no title fights, if they won one at all, but that still managed to gather huge crowds to their fights for the simple reason that their No-Defense, All-Offence, constant punching and getting punched style, attracted the most morbid of people that didn't want to see a boxing match, they wanted to see violence and blood like if it were ancient Rome. Boxers like Benny "Kid" Paret, or Jose Maria Gatica, boxers that in their fights would promise blood, either from themselves or from their opponents, it didn't matter which one.
Smartest man in boxing history....He got 10% of all proceeds from Joe Louis's fights for the next 10 years. Thats a long damn time, im curious how much it amounted to
That makes him a cowardly thief . NOT a champion . He wanted the biggest benefit possible because he "KNEW " that he was not man enough to beat his challenger . A qualified but racially penalized Joe Louis in a country that would put every advantage possibble in favor of the Champion because of his Challenger's skin tone. He only got that 10% because the boxing world was united and "On Code" to prevent another black world champion. And you applaud that? Just proves that there is no honor among thieves.

Maybe Max Baer wasn’t quite the “blood lusting animal” they made him out to be. @@pughoneycutt1986 OK, but Louis was the same number of years older than Marciano as Louis was younger than Braddock when he took the title from Braddock.

Corn Griffin to be the No 2 contender before the Braddock fight? I don't think so. In the rings annual ratings he never even reached the Top-10. Is there any proof for this theory? BTW in my opinion Braddock should have faced Max Schmeling for the title in '36 or '37.
Portrayed as a sadistic psychotic monster in the movie Cinderella Man “ Max Baer was a amiable affable and according to friends and family was “ jolly and full of laughter “ BaerSR never insulted Jim Braddock and his wife Mae in a nightclub pure fiction. After the Frankie Campbell tragedy Baer was banned from Boxing in California for a year. So Max went to New York his first opponent in New York City was supposed to be a Pslooka named Jim Braddock , but the NY SAC wouxnt sanction the bout. They deemed it too much of “ a Mismatch”. So Baer fought Ernie Schaaf instead. Later Baer who lost the decision to Ernie would knock Ernie cold at the end of their 2 nd bout. Max BaerSR had nothing to do with Ernie’s death. Ernie would fight six more times. Primo Carnera went to his grave thinking he had killedErnie. But Ernie died from pneumonia and meningitis brought on by his influenza. When the Braddock fight was announced Baer said” Jim and I have been friends for a long time, and I hope we will still be friends.. At he final bell Max Baer grabbed Braddock by the shoulders and said “ Congratulations Jim,you did it,I hope you make a ton of dough “!!!! Baer was upset because in 1930 the NYSAC didn’t think Braddock was a suitable opponent for Baer and now five years later he was. Baer had an offer of 350 K from a promoter in Europe to fight a rematch with Germany s Max Schmeling but Baer honored his contract with the NYSAC and fought Braddock. Before Cinderella Man was released in Cinemas Max Baer JR said” I hope they don’t make my dad look like MRT in Rocky 3. After seeing the film Baer JR said “ they made my dad look worse than MR T in Rocky III””
Braddock was tough, a real hard worker... Please look at the history, though, of Joe Louis. He donated over $90,000.00 to the Navy Relief Society, never saw anything from his two fights for charity. Then the mighty IRS came after him years later for taxes on money he never saw! What a system we have, eh? Perhaps that is why Frank Sinatra stepped in and helped Joe obtain a position as a greeter at a Vegas casino, to rebuild his pride later in life He also was patriotic, as Joe had been. There's so much of the real history that seems to escape the youth of today.
Still, Braddock got 10% of every Louis fight after that. After a knockout like that, you need to have something else to count on, cause you ain't getting back in the ring after that. I'm positive Jim had no interest in a rematch. Arguably Louis is seen as the goat. Even Marciano who knocked him out said, I don't think I could have beaten him in his prime.

This was a time when men fought to eat. All of the old time boxers would have eaten today’s crop of heavyweights for breakfast. These guys fought with gloves that had straw stuffing in them and took punches that would have knocked an elephant out. Today’s lot fight once or twice a year and get paid multi millions but the old guys fought every month or so. Brilliant video. 👍👍
They really wouldnt mate. Most of the heavyweights back then would be cruiserweight nowadays

I read the book & loved it.
I saw this video & loved it.
Excellent documentary, I hope millions will watch it.
Braddock vs Baer gives echoes of Fury vs Wilder.
Supposedly, Joe Louis said Braddock was the most courageous boxer he ever fought.
Good business call getting 10% of Joe Lewis. Both Fighters have a lot of heart
Gr8 doc !!! Bravo 👏
Boxers like Benny "Kid" Paret, or Jose Maria Gatica, boxers that in their fights would promise blood, either from themselves or from their opponents, it didn't matter which one.
this man would fight on an empty stomach
Joe put legacy first in that Braddock fight. But that was a bum deal. Jim is a buzzard for that one.
@@MrWARHAMMER68 It had nothing to do with race and everything to do with capitalizing on Joe Louis's loss to Max Schmelling and at the same time give hitler the finger. Had Louis won his fight this wouldnt be possible to do and thats proof it wasnt about race. Thats genius for your legacy and financial future, ive never heard of any contract like that since then.
@Trenton Ghorley it had everything ti do with race. So Braddock himself didn't have a loss? All of them had losses.
But no black was offered a title shot in over 40 years since Jack Jonson. Lewis had to take that criminally raw deal because the entire boxing world was against him getting a title shot in the first place. And it had nothing to do with merit. Did you see what Lewis did to your boy Braddock when he got that opportunity?
@@MrWARHAMMER68 it was definitely a dirty move I agree I don't buy into all the Braddock was a nice guy bullshit that movie made him seem like an innocent angel Max Baer was not a bad guy either once again that dumb movie screwed up baers legacy too
@@MrWARHAMMER68 I hate Braddock, hes not my boy. I watched this to watch Louis kick his ass. Your missing the point, Louis was the number 1 contender to fight Braddock when he lost to Max Schmelling. That meant that Louis was now the number 2 contender and Schmelling had a shot at the title now. But to stick it to the nazis they gave Louis the title shot anyway and because they knew they did Louis a huge favor they got their 10%. If not for Braddock we may never have seen Louis as a champion and instead had Schmelling
Back when there was no commission and SO MANY "loaded gloves", j-ws were champions... like Baer... where are they TODAY?!??! They were all CREATING back then... which is why so many people "died" back then, LOADED GLOVES!!!
Smaller gloves, not do much loaded gloves..

Maybe Max Baer wasn’t quite the “blood lusting animal” they made him out to be. But as you can see here in the Primo Carnera fight clip, After the ref stopped the fight, he throws a mean Hard right hand on Primo. THIS is why he is portrayed as a monster. You can literally see the Anger his face when he throws. He may not have been a monster Out of the ring, but once he stepped thru those ropes, he most Certainly became one! He was Well known for dirty fighting and he didn’t even hide it. Throwing back hands was one thing you can see in Every one of his fights. He was definitely no angel. He Totally deserved the nasty beat down he got from Joe Louis
Max was considered the comedy act of the division. Guy was crazy in the ring
Jim Braddock was quoted as saying that Max Baer was too nice of a person to have been a boxer.
@@davidbrandel1311 I’m aware. Nonetheless everything I said is Fact. I became a big Braddock fan after seeing Cinderella Man and started watching documentaries and read two books. One about Braddock and one about Baer. It’s true, outside the ring Baer was nice and a clown. He felt horrible for killing Frankie Campbell and Ernie Schaff too. But he did. Something changed when he stepped thru those ropes, man

After Braddock won the belt why didn't he take a few more fights to earn more money before fighting Louis?
Braddock had exhibition fights, product endorsements, and appearances in interviews on film to make money in 1936 as champ.
No guarantee he'd win said fights
@@dcrutch434 in those days, a champ could make more out of the ring than in.
Because his next fight was going to be against Max Schmeling and they were afraid that Max would win in a title will be in Germany
It’s easy to fight in life when you’re winning, but it’s knowing how to fight when you’re losing that counts.
I ran out of the room screaming.
Can you do Riddick Bowe video next?
He didn't retire...he had his license revoked
My Grandpaw was there to see him win the championship. I don't like that nine minutes in and this is turning into a race thing. When Braddock and Lewis fought people of ALL colors were pulling for the working man and only after Joe (my favorite) won later on did most folks turn this thing into race and it continues to this day which is sick.
How is bad ?
When someone puts a video up claiming it's about a certain champ and ends up talking about and cenetring in on two other champs that would be called disenginuous almost to the point of spamming. The champ the video was about had nothing to do with Jack Johnson for example. Today everyone is racist and everyone wants to make everything about race. Max Baer actually donated money to his deceased opponent's family, a little known fact.
Max dies at only aged 53, perhaps from the internal strain he suffered.
Thank you, after all even boxers ARE human, too.
Joe Louis's story goes on and it is a sad one. His trailers add his promoter screwed him over so bad that it affected Joe throughout his life. If I'm not mistaken he died broke

Don King said that Jim Braddock broke the color barrier in boxing. That tells u all u need to know.
Corn Griffin to be the No 2 contender before the Braddock fight? I don't think so. In the rings annual ratings he never even reached the Top-10. Is there any proof for this theory? BTW in my opinion Braddock should have faced Max Schmeling for the title in '36 or '37.

How did Braddock die?
Max Baer's son went on to play Jethro on The Beverly Hillbillies.
Perhaps that is why Frank Sinatra stepped in and helped Joe obtain a position as a greeter at a Vegas casino, to rebuild his pride later in life
He also was patriotic, as Joe had been.
There's so much of the real history that seems to escape the youth of today.
