The point of the video and song... The man was trapped in unending isolation and loneliness. He could not see, hear, talk, no arms or legs. There was no hope of recovery to any sense of better than he was. He was fed through a tube, hooked to machines that helped keep him alive, as his body wasn't able to really do so without them.
He was alone with only his thoughts, unable to even know if he was awake or dreaming. He couldn't hear or see anyone or even talk to them. He was doomed to only know the outside world was there, when the nurse came in and touched him when she was there tend to the machines. Which only makes the isolation and loneliness feel worse. No books, tv, radio, simple conversation with other people, just what thoughts ran through his mind...
It is a state of being that will literally drive a person insane. Just being isolated in a small room, while perfectly healthy, will drive people insane.
It is a horrible existence, basically a personal hell, worse than death... Endless suffering.
At the end of the video, the scene was to show the rest of the world moving on, celebrating a holiday or some other thing, as the man lay alone trapped in his continuing hell.

I think you missed this as he said in the song. “Landmine to my sight, arms, legs, speach, soul, and hearing.” Not in the order as he said it but still all six he said. With loosing all that there is no reason to live you can come back to normal living from all that.

No, they didn't kill your man... unfortunately. He's not coming back, he's short one complete face (the tent and the stitches that were pulled) and part of his brain ("decerebrated individual"), limbs, hearing, anything that would let him even know there's an outside world except the sensation of the skin on his chest. That's according to the book, "Johnny got his gun".
The nurse tried to end his personal hell, and was caught.
So they shoved him in a dark locked room and beyond basic care, forgot about him. He is the only One in the universe of his own mind.
    It's absolutely terrifying.

Okay. This song is based on a book titled Johnny got his Gun. Johnny was the guy in the hospital. He was so far gone that he was only being kept alive by machines. The doctors were keeping him alive to learn about what the hell happened to him. But he was beyond saving. He was supposed to die but they kept him alive as a science experiment. Him moving his head was Morse code for kill me. And he didn’t even know if anyone would see it. He was ready to die because he was stuck in limbo. He didn’t know if he was dead or alive, but he knew that something was wrong and it was literal hell and he wanted out.

    Lyrics
    I can't remember anything
Can't tell if this is true or dream
Deep down inside I feel to scream
    This terrible silence stops me
Now that the war is through with me
I'm waking up, I cannot see
That there is not much left of me
Nothing is real but pain now
Hold my breath as I wish for death
    Oh please God, wake me
Back in the womb it's much too real
In pumps life that I must feel
But can't look forward to reveal
Look to the time when I'll live
Fed through the tube that sticks in me
    Just like a wartime novelty
Tied to machines that make me be
Cut this life off from me
Hold my breath as I wish for death
    Oh please God, wake me
Now the world is gone, I'm just one
    Oh God help me
Hold my breath as I wish for death
    Oh please God, help me
    Darkness imprisoning me
    All that I see
    Absolute horror
    I cannot live
    I cannot die
    Trapped in myself
    Body my holding cell
    Landmine has taken my sight
    Taken my speech
    Taken my hearing
    Taken my arms
    Taken my legs
    Taken my soul
Left me with life in hell.
Story: A young American soldier serving in World War I, awakens in a hospital bed after being caught in the blast of an exploding artillery shell. He gradually realizes that he has lost his arms, legs, and all of his face (including his eyes, ears, teeth, and tongue), but that his mind functions perfectly, leaving him a prisoner in his own body. Based off a book "Johnny got his gun" and later into a movie.

As others have pointed out it's about a man being kept alive against his will.
Also the reason why Cliff Button is no longer in the band is he died when their tour bus crashed. Metallica like Iron Maiden,Anthrax, Slayer,Megadeath are some of the old guard of metal who've been around since the 80's.

I remember when this video first came out.. Metallica had never made a video for MTv prior to this video. It was a point of pride to the hardcore Metallica fans back then that they had resisted 'selling out' to the corporate machine by making a video. When this video dropped they got a ton of hate from the hardcore fans at the time.. but in the end attracted like 10x or more new fans. Personally.. I thought it was cool to have Metallica on MTv at the time.. it was like "Yeah, you punk-ass sissies.. this is what WE listen to! In your face!"
    Peace

Not sure is it was mentioned earlier, but this song was written about a movie called Johnny Got His Gun. Basically blown apart, and as Johnny put it, "my face was scooped out" limbs gone and should have died. The Army wanted to keep him alive and do experiments on him since they thought he was brain dead. The movie is in black & white and the color parts is when he is remembering the past or dreaming. Tried to use morse code to communicate with them that his brain was still functioning. Movie ended with the nurse removed and them keeping him in that state. Depressing, but good movie.

james hetfield: is the rhythm guitarist & lead singer
kirk hammett: is the lead guitarist
    lars ulrich: is the drummer
And in this video Jason Newsted was their bassist at this time, Jason left the band in 2001 but now their bassist is Robert Trujillo since 2003

The public don't understand what its like to come home from war.....weather you are whole or not. 22 a day make it back and end their own struggles. It's something beyond the reach of those who have not been there. 31 years of my life were in the Army and the last 10 were attending funerals that I never should have had to endure. Bless you brothers who see my comment and remember how hard you fought to get home.....you did it for a reason

This was metalica's first video, for their underground fans it was for them evidence that the band sold out, that's why some hate this song.. But in all fairness its a great song they gave it everything they had.

They been together since '79 I believe, yrs of alcohol almost broke up the band many times. They changed a little after the bassist cliff Burton died after a accident involving the whole band while on their tour bus cliff was ejected and ultimately crushed by the bus. That was devastating for them. They went through alot over 40 yrs but this was a huge turning point in their history.

I see enough comments explaining the song. I did not scroll all the way through to see if one part was explained. If not, I will add my 2 cents. The song was inspired by a movie. Scenes from the movie are used in the video. The end scene was a scene from the movie showing the people back home showing their support for the troops but have no idea of the horrors of war. Not a clue.
Many people claim this is an anti war song. Its not anti war specific. It is about awareness of the horrors soldiers live through. And even though our main character is begging to die the doctors won't allow it.
Metallica has a song on latest album dealing with PTSD named "Confusion". The video depics PTSD very vividly and powerful.

The most Savage Metallica song... This is magical, dGibby!!! Good choice!
FYI they bought the exclusive rights to the movie you see here just to feature it in the video. Movie is called "Johnny got his gun" made back in 1971.
In the end, he isn't dead but he's trapped in his body to go insane with his own conciousness. He survived but sadly him living in his own mind slowly rotting away is an injustice when he wants to die and be relieved from the suffering of being concious in a dead body. He is clearly concious asking for help when tapping SOS but they ignore it and just let him rot.

This song is a Banger for the first few times you listen it... But, after, you'll listen to this video/movie and absorb the sadness and the emotion of this. And then, you listen to the film with music in background. They're the time you'll understand the complexity of this production .. and emotions take all the place 🌹 Tx for the react, you're the best 👌

So this song is inspired by the book/film Johnny Got His Gun which is story about a soldier who lost his arms, legs, voice, sight, and hearing in the war. He says he wants to die because he cannot feel anything except pain, but the doctors and the higher ups in the military are forcing him to live by using machines. The footage of the people other than the band is from the film that Metallica had to buy the rights to, to use the footage. They have other songs inspired by stories to like For Whom the Bell Tolls. In the song they say things like, "Land mine has taken my sight, taken my speech, taken my hearing! Taken my arms, taken my legs, taken my soul! Left me life in hell!" This is describing what horror the protagonist was feeling knowing he no longer has a life anymore. At the end of the video he says how hopeless he is by saying, "If I had arms I could kill myself. If I had legs I could run away. If I had a voice I could keep sone kind of company for myself." It is a dark and tragic story which makes the song that more impactful. There is also a cool thing in the song that you may have not noticed. When the song amps up and the drummer goes nuts on the snare, it's to represent gunfire.

It's not an anti war song in the way some are portraying the song, it's purpose is to shine light on our Veterans and what they go through. It's raising awareness on our Veterans and it's a song made to pay homage as per interviews with the band.

In your intro for your videos you have that one sound bite in the beginning with the male voice that says "Worldwide Exclusive"....where did you get that? Glad you stepped into the world of metal! To help you out, pull up the lyrics when your checking out metal songs cause there are a lot out there that are hard for a newcomer to understand what the artists are saying. Also to let you know there are a ton os sub genres of metal, look into all of them cause they each bring something to the table. Metal is filled with a lot of pain the artists are going through and music is their therapy. So pull up the lyrics to help you understand the deep meanings behind the songs. They get dark! Keep rollin with the metal cause we are a huge community and now your one of us! Keep that head bangin brotha!

No arms, no legs, mouth melted shut, larnyx destroyed, eyes burned beyond repair, ear drums blown out, unable to smell due to the gunpowder of the bomb destroying his nose, there is no moving on. He is conscious but he is not alive.
This is from an antiwar movie calles Johnny Got His Gun, a play on of the old patriot song "Johnny get your gun" which was played on the radio to inspire young men to join WW1. The book and movie deal with Johnny slipping into mass hysteria and insanity, at the end begging for death. The doctors prevent him from dying despite the fact he will never recover and will never live a happy or successful life. You can do that with some of the injuries he sustained, but all of them at once? That's not living. There's no chance for independence. He is banging his head against the pillow as his only means of communication and even then in the book it took almost a month for the doctors to realize what he was doing.
War is the worst thing we have ever done to each other and because of our nature we will never stop waging war. It's best to let those who will not be able to move on pass on, not keep them in their own purgatory because our "god" says suicide leads straight to hell. Hell cannot he worse than what Johnny is experiencing. Johnny is already in hell. Hell would be seen as a paradise compared to what he has to deal with.

In answer to your question regarding lobotomy; no that procedure was not a lobotomy. Lobotomies do not go through the forehead but USUALLY (in the case of frontal lobe lobotomies which would be the only one you could really reach through the forehead) through the lacrimal (tear) duct in your eye, up at an angle somewhat following the bridge of the nose up to the brain. Going through the forehead, while TECHNICALLY possible presents too much damage and work to be truly effective as you have 2 plates of bone between you and the frontal lobe, plus the grey matter you really don't want to scramble.
As for what it WAS, I'm not positive, it has been a while since I saw the movie so I don't quite have the context I need to be sure. I can't remember if it is stitching a wound or if it was to keep the mask on his face (reminder he had a good chunk of it missing in the story). You're right it didn't look like a normal stitch, so maybe removing shrapnel? If it was a lobotomy it is all wrong lol.

At the end of the video the nurse attempts to mercy-kill the soldier, which he is begging for, but the chaplain catches her in the act and stops it. So the soldier lives on, in his misery, and while the outside world has the gifts to keep him alive, they can’t heal him, so they just forget about him and leave him in the hospital ward while they go on to enjoy life without him.
I appreciate your honesty and raw energy in your reactions, keep it up. Also, this is one of my favorite songs of all time. As much as I love how the video amplifies the message of the song, it also intrudes upon the flow a lot. You should give the song a listen on its own sometime.

The original bassist for Metallica Cliff Burton passed away on a tour buss accident in Sweden. On their 1986 (Master of Puppets) album tour. Then Jason Newsted joined in 1988 as their second bassist. This song one is from the “...And Justice For All” album, came out in 1988. Then in 1997, they threw Jason Newsted out of the band for secretly playing for another side band. But Metallica had no bassist now so from 1997-2003 they used their Music Producer, Bob Rock as a temporary bassist to continue to make albums..but never went on tour. It wasn’t until late 2003 when they ended getting their newest and current bassist, Robert Truijjo, who used to be the bassist for Ozzy Osborne, and Suicide Tendencies. Metallica’s most recent album came out in 2017 “Hardwired...To Self Destruct” you should react to “Dream no more” by Metallica.
