This man is of a songwriting magnitude the likes of which us plebs can only wank over. His sheer tunesmithing talents are like nothing the world has ever seen, nor is likely to see again. All hail!
I don't know what it is about Todd - maybe it's his refusal to appease mainstream music marketing - but he is one of the most under-rated guitar players ever. Never mind his prolific song writing genius. I think the guy is a hot mess of talent. One of his most popular songs was made famous by someone else (song: Love is the Answer).
I agree totally, except that he excels at every instrument he has ever laid his hands on. I love that he still, to this day, plays his old, funky green guitar.
Despite the poor quality of this video, there is nothing like seeing the artist relating to the crowd. No selfies being taken, just pure joy at being there. Drop me into the front row.
I saw Todd Rundgren & Utopia at the Poplar Creek Music Ampitheatre in Hoffman Estates, IL. in 1985 or 86, as a 5th or 6th grader, incapable of fully appreciating the musical complexity and finesse of such a gifted artist and his band. At the time, Kiss, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, & Van Halen were about all I could really digest at that stage in my life.
I will never understand why this song wasn't a massive hit. No matter what anyone tells me. This should be played at every sports game and in the credits of several beloved films. This should be in all inspirational slideshows and a karaoke classic favorite. It wasn't, because Todd didn't force it to be. I will never understand why, but that's why we love him. In writing this song he created an anthemic masterpiece, and I guess that was a victory in itself. Besides, he only asked for just one.
Rungren was the Phil Spector "Wall of Sound" equivalent for the 1970s Progressive Rock era. Zappa achieved something similar in the studio but Rungren could do it live. Gong, with a similar acid-influenced but more jazz-rooted sound did something similar in Europe at the same time. I was 15 and this was my stuff........gosh, memories!
Can you believe that this man didn't even make the Rolling Stone's list of 100 greatest singers of all time? Unbelievable!...and his guitar playing's not too bad either. Nobody solos like Todd.
Todd is a true genious. He's financially secure. He professes that "Bat Out of Hell" is his cash cow. He said one day a check for $800K just showed up in the mail related to BOOH. His real showing of love is how he raised Liv Tyler as his own child and then took her to an Aerosmith concert to meet her real father. He loved BeeBee Buell and Liv. What a "Real Man".
I hope Todd reads this stuff once and a while. Hey Man, once upon a time your music saved my sanity for real. I can't thank you enough. Your still the best.
I love Todd....there's no other music that has been this good for my soul, his music has been such a big part of my life, every one of his songs has applied in one way or another and it always makes me feel better when I listen to his songs, and I'm passing it on to my kids and grandkids, they must know Todd!!
I met Todd at the Orpheum Theatre in St. Louis after a show he did at the Orpheum Theatre with Joe Jackson. What a great talent and person. He is one of the ultimate influences on me and my bandmates. He is one of the very best people at what he does and it is that simple! Paul Brown
When I am King, this song will be my National Anthem. This tune, lyrically, contains every cliche there is. Yet, it is awesomely inspirational. Just another example of Todd's genious----"Hold That Line!" This is All Time Art, not merely craft. Todd is a world-class melody maker. Unlike McCartney, though, he is also incredibly bright, funny and ironic. It doesn;t get any better than this.
I think you covered every media known to man there. And you are exactly right. I'm about to go listen to this song on CD at maximum volume, at least twice, and then go to bed with a smile and gratitude in my heart for Todd, Richard Thompson, Duane Allman, Blue Rodeo, and a million other geniuses that have blessed my life. Thanks for appreciating the good stuff.
this is my dad's biggest idol ! this is just great... please all have a look at "the last ride" video , Todd performing with Daryl Hall, magical stuff !!!!
the pilgrims of the earth, those with a heavenly home, understand this song...the corporations don't, the oil people don't, the Fed. Reserve doesn't, the media commentary mental manipulators don't...thanks, Todd, for giving us such inspired words...strength is what we are going to need in the days to come
Just One Victory Todd Rundgren We've been waiting so long, We've been waiting so long, We've been waiting for the sun to rise and shine Shining still to give us the will Can you hear me, the sound of my voice? I am here to tell you I have made my choice I've been listening to what's been going down There's just too much talk and gossip going 'round You may think that I'm a fool, but I know the answer Words become a tool, anyone can use them Take the golden rule, as the best example Eyes that have seen will know what I mean The time has come to take the bull by the horns (Hold that line, baby hold that line, get up boys and hit 'em one more time) We've been so downhearted, we've been so forlorn (We may be losing now but we can't stop trying, so hold that line, baby hold that line) We get weak and we want to give in (Hold that line, baby hold that line, get up boys and hit 'em one more time) But we still need each other if we want to win (We may be losing now but we can't stop trying, so hold that line, baby hold that line) If you don't know what to do about a world of trouble You can pull it through if you need to and if You believe it's true, it will surely happen Shining still, to give us the will We've been waiting so long, We've been waiting so long, We've been waiting for the sun to rise and shine Shining still to give us the will Bright as the day, to show us the way Somehow, someday, We need just one victory and we're on our way Prayin' for it all day and fightin' for it all night Give us just one victory, it will be all right We may feel about to fall but we go down fighting You will hear the call if you only listen Underneath it all we are here together Shining still to give us the will Bright as the day, to show us the way Somehow, someday, (Hold that line, baby hold that line, get up boys and hit 'em one more time) We need just one victory and we're on our way (We may be losing now but we can't stop trying, so hold that line, baby hold that line) Prayin' for it all day and fightin' for it all night (Hold that line, baby hold that line, get up boys and hit 'em one more time) Give us just one victory, it will be all right (We may be losing now but we can't stop trying, so hold that line, baby hold that line) Writer(s): Todd Rundgren
That song has been my personal anthem since 1974. I'm just an old rock fan, nobody special, but its gotten me through the worst of times. Thanx Todd your the best!
These Lyrics sum up the positive human spirit "We may feel about to fall but we go down fighting. You will hear the call if you only listen.Underneath it all we are here together shining still .Give us the will". Thanks Todd.I wanna see Todd again this time if possable with Utopia.

@spiderplant12 You need to check him out, I've seen him live so many times I lost count, Met Kas in random circumstances, cool dude, Find a way, they still tour, worth the trip.
Todd comes from an area of the country and a culture that always believed in working for what you earn. I'm sure he has money but I doubt he really values it above other things like creating good songs.

This song saved my life
This song has the qualities of an anthem.

I agree, look what he did for Liv Tyler, as an example of what he is all about. "Use the golden rule, as the best example" indeed!
He's a pure genius.
And at their best, Utopia was a great band! They created some of the most relistenable prog music of all time!
@@marygleason7815 I love the tie-dye green guitar, too.
i agree todd was and is ahead of his time....

Saw him at Knebworth '79, hadn't heard him much before that - it was a revelation, a very talented man in a lot of ways.
Greatest song ever. Runs through my head randomly from time to time and I start singing it in the car, in the house, wherever.

MYself and a dear friend sang it at Glasgow Rangers matches.Hes the MAN.
His time isn't over! He still is making music and doing live concerts! A Wizard and a True Star!
"Ah, youth!..."(Joseph Conrad)
In my lifetime of experiencing rock performances it didn't get any better than this. Still hasn't.
12 thumbs down?

Wonderful. Effortless eloquence. Thanks for posting.
The Extended Jam at the end is amazing. I thought the song was over and then the extended instrumental starts
I wish he played this 8 minute version every time he performs it.
It's amazing how him and Daryl Hall sound so similar.Great song.
Todd was the Real Man during this time! His concerts had as much energy as all the Pink Floyd concerts back then.
For how many times I've watched this, I still laugh every time I see his face at 8:08
Todd...always!

Todd comes from an area of the country and a culture that always believed in working for what you earn. I'm sure he has money but I doubt he really values it above other things like creating good songs.
Reminds me of when I saw Todd and Utopia perform this at Knebworth in 1979. They pissed all over Led Zep that day.
Cool soul full bass lines too.
awesome.
If I owned the Philadelphia Eagles I would adopt this as the team theme song and would have it played before every home game!
