Apologies for the grumpiness at the start. The game just rubbed me the wrong way and I wanted to punch it in the groin. But I got over it :)

No apologies needed. We aren't here for the game play, we're here for the commentary, and irritated Gopher is entertaining.

Tomorrow's headline: Local sleep-deprived githyanki dresses up as a human, breaks into newspaper print shop, becomes enraged and massacres half of Baldur's Gate (this has been fact-checked by true Gortash patriots)

you did not do anything wrong really, no worries. that press quest is a one man stealth job and nobody can know that first try, so this outcome is rather common, and very annoying. that‘s why I only did it once on the first run and have it ignored ever since (no real consequence there either).

idk, i got on the roof - there was a breakable part of the floor there - so i smashed it and dropped down right on top of the elevator that goes directly to the basement. I got my whole squad with me without using invisibility or other tricks - and then we stormed the watchers in the basement. No stealth used - and yet we still basically got the "silent assassin" rating so to speak.
I guess ppl just haven't used to rly look around and try finding solutions in their environment in this type of isometric games. But BG3 is unique as it has somewhat of an "immersive sim" elements and there are a lot of things that can be done by simply being perceptive to the surroundings.

I just ignored this quest completely in my first run, never visited the building (forgot about it), never spoke to the guy, never triggered the quest :-))

I reviewed the part where Scratch got caught trespassing, and here are my thoughts.
As soon as you opened the door, the guard ran over, saying, "Show yourself!".
Scratch then followed you through the door (followed by your other summon) and he received negative attitude from multiple NPCs.
What I think happened is that because Scratch can't speak (without the NPC having "Speak with Animals" of course), Larian didn't include a way for animals or summons to have a trespassing dialogue (for example, the NPC could shoo the summon away) so it defaulted to combat. It's also possible that the trespassing dialogue defaults to the summoner, but because you were invisible, it just defaulted to combat. Maybe they should have made it so that it would break your invisibility and force that dialogue.
Regarding the other party members, I believe Larian has it set up so that if a non-invisible party member is within range of another party member or summon that is in combat, they will immediately join the fight, no questions asked.
So, I guess it's just that some of the game mechanics fail to take into account every situation, or Larian forgot to implement checks/flags to prevent these issues from happening. Or maybe implementing them broke something else, so they decided against it. The latter reminds me of dealing with modding sometimes; you come up with a great idea but then realise it doesn't work with all your other ideas, so you either have to scrap it or remake your mod from scratch. Fun! :)

I'd actually not call this quest bad in any sense of the word, what i'd blame for this quest is the games complete lack of the ability to look UP, theres no real reason the camera shouldn't allow vertical movement, even when you mod it in against the original devs design, it works really well, the only issue that ever comes up is being able to see through some structures that weren't fully designed from the bottom. In a city like BG, verticality is everythihng, can't tell you how much time i spent just flying across rooftops, although granted i did become half-illithid on my first run so it wasn't much of an issue.
Also yea, as other people have mentioned, you gotta always remember to leave party members behind, including summons, as every follower is treated as a part member, so if they get spotted even as a dog, its gg's. Druid's of course don't have this issue, being able to turn into cats
    😉

Yeahhhh Stop The Presses is pretty much always mentioned when people discuss their least favorite BG3 quests. Other than the talking printing press, it's pretty much a slog. And unless you know what's coming, it's almost inevitable you get overwhelming aggro on a first play at least once if you don't reload.

Not if you're familiar with how game works. I missed this quest on my first playthrough. Done it on my second, so I was reasonably experienced already, never had any issues with it

It's an easy quest, one man job. But of course if you play sporadically, don't remember half the things abour how game works and it's your first time, you can bring a posse of elementals for a stealth heist 😅 I can understand the frustration though, those thing feel very unfair 😂

    • @GophersVids
      @GophersVids  3 дні тому +3

@@alexmashkin863 I'm playing twice a week and I can't think of anything that I've forgotten that would have made any difference right there. Also I didn't actually bring any elementals for a heist. In fact there really was no heist when it went wrong. There was a dog who walked into the building by himself, so they decided to murder everyone outside. Now that was a mistake on my part, but my god does that seem like a bit of an over reaction? I guess people in Baldur's Gate better keep their pets on a leash so as to not get groups of random passers by slaughtered :)
Also most of the frustration was not so much about it not being fair, but rather in knowing I might have to spend an entire stream just running away OR in killing everyone in Baldur's Gate. One of which looked to be very very boring, and the other looked to basically rob us of a ton of actual storied content. Luckily the running away option took less time than I thought because no other guards or watchers spotted us.

@@GophersVids Well, you did leave your posse standing right there and took a dog with you :-) The game treats your party as a group for those types of aggro, when you trespassing (which you were) or doing other criminal stuff. You need to leave companions much further for them to not count for aggro. Of course red door means trespassing, and since you were already kicked out with the warning there were no second warning for you. It's how this quest works. You could have known at least some of those things, if you were able to play in more focused manner. And come on, you constantly forget how speak to dead works, can't find things on the bar and such :-)) Don't tell me there's nothing about the game you could've remembered that would've helped you.
Saying that, I do understand, you're streaming it, it's not the same. I completely missed this quest on my first playthrough, done it on the second. Never even crossed my mind to do it like you did, because I already was aware of how stealth and detection and aggro works.
Running away is an absolute viable strategy, done it a lot myself :-)) Your second try with Astarion was good :-)

But that's hindsight for you :)
*"You could have known at least some of those things"* - I've not done this quest before so honestly I don't see how I could have know that's how it would work. I've not really done many stealth quests or used disguise before. I've entered places I shouldn't before and been challenged over it, but apart from two bugged places, I was always able to talk my way out of it. But more importantly, I've never tried to disguise my way into some place before.
*"And come on, you constantly forget how speak to dead works, can't find things on the bar and such :-))"*- What have I forgotten about Speak with Dead? And how would that have helped with this quest? Oh, and I'm not saying I don't forget things. I'm saying I didn't forget anything that would have helped me here. I didn't know how this quest would handle the plan I hatched. I just didn't.
*"Don't tell me there's nothing about the game you could've remembered that would've helped you."'* - I'm sorry, but that's just the truth. I can't think of anything that I forgot that would have helped. None of the things that you mentioned were forgotten. Honestly, it just comes down to not knowing how this quest works, or perhaps the fact that I just don't seem to be a good judge of this game.

@@GophersVids Throughout this playthrough you've already encountered all the mechanics that lead to the aggro in this scenario. You didn't register or weren't paying attention - probably, or forgotten - possibly. The only thing that this particular quest does in somewhat unique way is it doesn't give you second warning, there are areas in the game that do it as well, but I don't think you've approached them in that way anyway.
I'm not feeling like going through hundreds of hours of streams just to prove a silly point though 😂 So if you think you haven't forgotten anything that could have prevented it, ok, so be it :-))
Anyway, now you've probably learned some things - disguise doesn't matter for quests, red door means trespassing, heists are better done alone and dogless, steel watch hits hard, being nice to fairies pays off :-))
Speak with Dead was just an example, you've done it million times before but still you swap the amulet in to recast it even though you don't need it and you fumble about trying to remember how to recast it. So it's no wonder you can't remember mechanics you encountered once and probably wasn't paying attention anyway :-)
I'm not having a go at you, just to clarify :-) I love and adore this playthrough, and I like you a lot, thankful for all the great content :-)
English is not my first language and I find English speaking people being way too squeamish about how I text. I stopped watching your streams live because of it, moderators are just ugh :-)))

*See The Dog Walked In..." (While pointed at places, it is a game and what is said below coms with wry smile and wink as well... because in the end it's just a game - I was trying to help...):
Actually, it is more like Gopher had a party, during the party some random guests who came with their dog (plus a bunch of hangers on - the summons) got mouthy, Gopher threw them (including the dog and the hangers on - the summoned) out of his home and locked the doors so they (nor anyone else could enter Gopher's home). Now, after having thrown them out and locked the door, the doors (which were locked) are suddenly thrown open, and there stands the same dog, the hangers-on (the summoned), and another random group of strangers (and an invisible person who is not seen). Then the DOG in the lead walks into Gopher's house and this random group of strangers and the same hangers on (summoned) are posed to do the same. What would you do Gopher? Invite the dog, the hangers on (the summoned), and a new group of random strangers into your home? Really? But that's not all... me thinks thought doust protest too much (friendly smile).
Of course, you must remember that this is a world in which the group of strangers is known to be a POWERFUL group of people who are at odds with other prominent members of the community (Gortash), the world is full of magic and magicians, the world is full of wizards, witches, etc., and a widely known 1st Level Spell is Change Self (cf., Alter Self) (probably popularly used in the public and playhouses), and, while high level magic using persons might be rare, Change Self is a 1st Level Spell available to all kinds of low level magic types - wizards and various other magic using types - certain clerics (Deception Domain/aka Early Shadowheart). Huh!?! I wonder whether Gopher knowing all this would be like - sure, dog and hangers-on (summons) come on in with a random group of strangers - wearing the same clothes and armor as the people we threw out. Change Self is designed to fool people to a small and general degree - but clothing and everything would need to match. While you used a higher level version of the spell, the higher level grants multiple people to be affected *not* Shape Change (a higher level much more powerful spell) or major illusion.
In my own campaign world, AD&D to 5E (to PF1E/2E) what you did would have never worked with the way you attempted it (returning with Scratch and your summons - any serious staff person, guard, or Steel Watch who had been alerted by Gortash that you - a now famous party who Gortash has asked the paper to write dirt article claiming you are the cause of the Absolute. You *would be* attacked and aggro things in the area. Granted, we - yourself and I - would need a game with serious AI-level power to make such decisions (are you wearing the same clothes, have the same summons, etc.,). So, Larian made the door *locked* and turned it *red* to tell you in *shorthand* --- *if you come in you will be an enemy and will likely trigger a fight (99.9% of the time).* Also, Line-Of-Sight factored in with the rest of your party, who were clearly in the line of sight - it's day time - once the doors were open. While AI is not sophisticated enough to manage - same clothes, same dog, same summon - locked red doors should be sufficient warning... hopefully, more so in the future.

I find this really quite funny tbh,
my first time doing this quest I broke into the newspaper place from the roof using gaseous form and invisibility.
Always Scout, most important places in act 3 will have atleast three different entrances, a front door, and two more subtle options. Some have more.

Ever since, crawling across the rafters in the Selunite Temple in Act 1, I felt the game was prepping us for solving quests and considering verticallity.
And what's more vertical than a city?
I think Gopher had the right idea when he began looking for a sewer.
