    Peruvian artist LU.CU.MA spent 27 years in jail for the murder of his brother, among other crimes. After his release, LU.CU.MA-short for Luis Cuevas Manchego-swore to turn himself around. He traded the machine guns, hand grenades, and knives that he once used to ambush buses for art supplies.
    VICE traveled to Lima, Peru, to talk to LU.CU.MA about his life, how he uses art as a way to repent, and why all his paintings involve things like corrupt politicians being beheaded by snakes.

    I'm sure not all his crimes an murders were just out of defense, or against people who had it coming, but the man has obviously made an effort to move away from that life. At least through his art it seems to bring him hope an keep him out of your house with a butcher knife in his hand.

      Mark Kapran I agree completely that it was a good thing for him to change. But if he was truly a man to be respected, he wouldn't have gotten in "deep" in the first place. Even considering the circumstances he was forced into, he could have chosen to leave that life behind. If he had resisted that background and led a successful life, his entire life, despite his background, then he would be respectable in my eyes.

Maybe you'll get remorseful and break down when they're sitting on your stomach, holding a knife. Then you're dead. He did say that the dead haunt him at night, and he's probably making a huge understatement. Is it really that hard to imagine?

    • @rahxephon52
      @rahxephon52 10 років тому +1

      I don't think that's the case, I believe he had to do it because he had to defend himself in some way. He's conscious of what he has done wrong, he even mentioned the dead visit him at night, because he is aware of what he has done wrong and that keeps him up at night. That is why he said he's wiser than the people that are watching this, have you even been watching this video? a murderer, does not have the capacity to create art about politics the unjust in this world. He's more awakened then the major of the people who are watching this because he realize this world is ran by people/government who Murder others in the name of Defending one's country and greed. Yet people can't see, but this man does. That's why he claims he's wiser, and he's right.

    • @rahxephon52
      @rahxephon52 10 років тому +3

      ***** It has nothing to do with intelligence, it has to do with how conscious the individual is. Creating art is a form of expression, you don't have to be smart to express yourself. That is why I said he's aware, conscious, never once about him being smart or intelligent. That is why I said create art/expression, regarding issue with the corrupt government, so he know what's right and what's wrong? Some murderer don't feel sorry for the victim they've killed, but this man does? there is a major difference between having intelligence and Moral intelligence.

He could still kill and murder if he wishes, but he decides to try to put forth the effort to healing the wrong he has made. For many his efforts fall short but at least he is working towards a recovery. I don't blame the family for not wanting to talk to him, it's a consequence of his actions and he's the one who knows that more than any of us viewers.

      Brendon8910 Deeming an act of killing as right or wrong is a relative matter. For instance is it more or less egregious to stab, maim and then kill a dog than it is a human? Is killing out of defense less egregious than killing out of pleasure? Also the state of happiness itself is a relative term. But I suspect that in LU.CU.MA's case, he decided to change when he realized that painting rather than killing added to the happiness he is seeking.

    • @NYC_Goody
      @NYC_Goody 10 років тому

      Sailtothemoon No. It's just as bad to kill a dog. Yes. Killing in defense if someone is trying to kill you is legal. Killing someone out of pleasure means there is something wrong with you and you're not deemed safe to society. How can you not see that?

    • @TruthSeeker310
      @TruthSeeker310 10 років тому +6

      Brendon8910 I understand your perspective and am in no way disagreeing with you. In fact I'm one of the 18 viewers who liked your comment. I just wanted to make the point that there are gray areas with regards to the judgment people have towards the act of killing. Other then the occasional mosquito or cockroach, I'm against killing anything. Yet millions and billions of cows, pigs and birds are slaughtered annually in the U.S alone to satisfy my and other peoples appetite for meat. So hypothetically speaking, if we lived in a world where the most popular forms of meat came from cats and dogs while cows and pigs where the preferred family pets then in that world popular opinion would be that killing a dog isn't bad. Human beings are social creatures and as such we've learned that killing a member of our society does not induce happiness. But if the reverse were true, if killing another person was the cause for happiness, there's no doubt in my mind that we'd all be killers. Again I understand and appreciate your perspective, just wanted to point out that most things in life aren't just black and white.

This is why I respect the journalists at Vice, this is why I appreciate the things Vice does and this shows me that the world isn't always a fun and nice place, you may meet new people, sometimes they are good and sometimes they are bad.
