Peruvian artist LU.CU.MA spent 27 years in jail for the murder of his brother, among other crimes. After his release, LU.CU.MA-short for Luis Cuevas Manchego-swore to turn himself around. He traded the machine guns, hand grenades, and knives that he once used to ambush buses for art supplies.
VICE traveled to Lima, Peru, to talk to LU.CU.MA about his life, how he uses art as a way to repent, and why all his paintings involve things like corrupt politicians being beheaded by snakes.

When you are working on projects like this you often work with a fixer(man who guides you to specific person or a guy that knows the underground or a certain dangerous area ) fixers can be found on specific websites fb groups etc.

It's odd. He seems like he is not all "there" in his head. However when you look at his paintings you realize how intelligent he really is. Makes you wonder about people.
He seemed quite intelligent to me, and fairly articulate. Absolutely crazy though, sociopathic tendencies for sure
That's what I was saying. At a first glance you would think he is absolutely insane. Then he talks about his paintings and you realize he's actually pretty intelligent.
he looks like his had a tough life which has caused him to be talented, in life those who have little to lose wind up being those with the most to give.
+megamixa How exactly does his paintings make him intelligent?
***** I think you are referring to introverts, not sociopaths. Sociopaths are extremely capable of finding the weaknesses in things, people, the social fabric, etc.
the part about talking to prostitutes was genuinely touching

VICE traveled to Lima, Peru, to talk to LU.CU.MA about his life, how he uses art as a way to repent, and why all his paintings involve things like corrupt politicians being beheaded by snakes.
you guys know where can i find him? Im completely interested in his paintings and history.

You should do videos of him telling stories of his murders

These subtitles aren’t quite right but i guess they get the point across.
Thing is he uses a lot of peruvian slang in here. However, translations are pretty accurate. Funny how different can peruvian slang be from argentinian sometimes. "Cachar" means to fuck someone in peru but, in argentina, it means to caught someone doing something
Matias Carabajal every latin country has a lot of slang, jajaja this tio is crazy and also very respetado here for la gente
Los subtitulos en ingles nunca van a ser accurate no le hacen justicia este español hahha
most people commenting on this don't really have a clue what its like to grow up rough in an underdeveloped country like Peru. It's dog eats dog type of situation. he obviously had some pretty serious problems growing up.
I'm sure not all his crimes an murders were just out of defense, or against people who had it coming, but the man has obviously made an effort to move away from that life. At least through his art it seems to bring him hope an keep him out of your house with a butcher knife in his hand.
That’s because we live in a fucked up place called society and people don’t want to put themselves in other people shoes have been around them the world I’ve been Third World countries I grow up poor soul I understand but most dont

Perú is completely fine stop spreading fake bullshit lies about Peru just to make a point, Oh wait, you did that... For 4 years... Thanks..
Peru is not an under developed country, it's not like Puerto Rico, or Cuba, there are just small parts of Lima that are dangerous
That’s not how all of Peru looks like... I was raised in Lima in a middle class area and I have never experienced violence there. except thieves stealing things from my neighbors quietly at night once every blue moon.
where he lives is in the worst area of Lima which is close to cerros, several places where people shouldn’t legally live.
This is an excellent story, by the way. This is precisely the kind of madness one can't find anywhere else. Thanks Vice.

To all of you who don't understand why vice is taking the time to do a video on this guy, this video is about how a seemingly lost human being found redemption.Yes he still has his knives but they seem to be mostly to scare off punks. This man is more righteous than some of the most famous preachers today for what he does. Amazing.
for all of you saying he shouldnt be forgiven think about how his living conditions were. you guys all think like he killed people for fun but he was brought up around gang members and left on the street at a young age. from his stories it seems like he killed people from self defense except for maybe his brother.
No, fuck him.
@Ahmad Shamil ok so you keep that same bitch made energy if its one of your family members senselessly murdered

This man embodies change.
He is an inspiration.
If he can do it, anybody can. Too bad more people haven't turned their life around like this man has.
what do you know... in certain conditions, a murderous kleptomaniac can turn into a kind hearted painter.
And with even shorter notice he could turn back into a psychotic murder.
DaCamponTwee I won't be one to disagree with you.
Breaking good?
you guys are missing the point. AFTER HE WENT THROUGH ALL THE MISFORTUNE IN HIS LIFE HE WAS STILL ABLE TO FIND SOME PEACE AND COMFORT. SO, LESSON LEARNED IS IT IS NEVER TOO LATE TO GIVE UP, AND TRY TO BE A BETTER PERSON.
It appears that he could have deviated from the path of becoming a killer if he was treated right during his childhood years, considering that he was beat-up by his brother due to his kleptomania. Well, goodluck to him and his "changed" life now.
John Smith it doesn’t change the fact he murdered people
Also how the fuck was his older brother supposed to stop his kleptomania? Ask him politely ? Foh csm

Not a psychopath but a sociopath. There's a significantly higher rate of sociopaths in rural areas and underdeveloped countries, and in this case, Peru. Psychopaths are genetical but sociopaths are circumstantial; his past explains that. Nurture vs. Nature basically.
Also, sociopathy can be cured since it's created by the situation, much like trauma.
All these freetime psychologists. Its insane how you guys Judge from 1 Video that he has that and that. Just stop you are not a psychologist dont try to do a diagnosis.
@@akiimo389 You said it. We judge but never diagnose. It's just a guess at most, never meant it to be a fact. Just a speculation. Is it that bad to give your opinion or thoughts on what illness you think the person has?

Hey people, I was actually shocked to find a video about LuCuMa. I am from Iquitos - Peru and this guy actually lived in my grandparents house, in the second floor, one of the rooms which my grandparents rent out to people. Hahaha it's funny to find him on youtube. On the other hand guys, this man's presence is actually very intimidating, kind of scary, which is why people in my house treated him with respect. The good thing is, he was only there for a couple of months or so.
I can't help but respect this guy.
Yes he had a fucked up life but he's made the decision to own that and make the move to become a better human being

I was about to unsubscribe because I couldn't care less about marijuana, but Vice released this video and got me back on their good side.
***** what?
So fucking what if I'm not you! That doesn't mean it's okay for you to give up! If you do, I'll never forgive you as long as I live!
I respect this man a lot.
You respect a man who murdered not just one but multiple people, including his own brother? That's just wrong.
Alex Wolffe ok maybe your right .. for killing his brother... but he seems like the type of guy who would NOT take shit from anyone and i respect him for that and for trying to stay away from trouble... and yes killing his brother , I cant even imagine doing that to my brother no matter how angry I am but u seen what he was doing to his head,,,
Mark Kapran I agree completely that it was a good thing for him to change. But if he was truly a man to be respected, he wouldn't have gotten in "deep" in the first place. Even considering the circumstances he was forced into, he could have chosen to leave that life behind. If he had resisted that background and led a successful life, his entire life, despite his background, then he would be respectable in my eyes.
Alex Wolffe life can be a bitch to somme , unfortunatelly not everyone get to choose there life paths and walk down the eazy way
Alex Wolffe If you were born and raised in rural parts of countries in South America, you wouldn't be questioning that...
His paintings are actually pretty damn good.
I actually like this guy. He teaches me that all humans can be labeled as brutal but can express in magnificent form from the mind.
This video made me subscribe back to Vice.
Keep more of these types of stories and videos comin'.
i dont think he's boastful about his past, he's just honest. these things happened when he faced a very tough part of his life. im not saying what he did was right, but he has done his time and has clearly been rehabilitated. he doesnt appear to be wanting to kill anyone or rob anyone any time soon, so surely the justice system has worked for this guy?
I liked this it was interesting.
Many have the talent of an artist, but very few have the soul of one. This man has both.
I have a lot of respect for the man after watching this. To come from where he was to where he is now takes a whole lot of courage and change. I applaud him for not just giving in and staying the way he was, but instead, having the courage to make a change in himself and to try to change others for the better.
I don't think that he regrets it really much, he tells it as he he's proud of it
I almost see it as him coming to terms with it. He knows what he did was wrong, but there is no way to change it. He did seem like he was bragging about it at many point though.
When someone has a terrible history like that, they can't forever be tormented with it. You can't change the past, but this guy is a good example on how you can change the future.
He simply isn't trying to hide it. He says what he has done and what he is. I killed, i was the bad guy, and i still am - but now i do good. That's what he means when he tells he is not a saint, he means that he is not anymore a good person, but just a bad person trying to do good
I see him as someone who doesn't meddle with the past and looks only at the future. I respect that.
If he didn't regret having killed or been aggressive in the past, he would still be doing it. Dumbass.
is it me or does he almost sound boastful when speaking about his past...
I thought the same. He doesn't seem remorseful at all...
kjul of course no regrets!!
If you show weakness when you talk about people you've killed, people will get ideas to kill you. Every man he came in contact with was fighting for the top. Maybe you'll get remorseful and break down when they're sitting on your stomach, holding a knife. Then you're dead. He did say that the dead haunt him at night, and he's probably making a huge understatement. Is it really that hard to imagine?
The way he speaks is influenced by his culture. Many natives speak with this enthusiasm
shilton charles Very!
Given the right circumstances he would do it again. The worst thing you can do is promote him, as others will look up to him and think being a murderer is okay if your willing to 'change' afterwards.
I'm sure he doesn't ask for forgiveness, he just wants to paint. He's promoting art, not murder.
Wait... Actually in a way, he is... But you know what, some people do deserve to die :/ NOT CONDONING MURDER!
Given the right circumstances anyone could be a killer. That is hardly an argument. Also, why do you underestimate people so badly? Do you really think people are stupid enough that they would interpret this video as saying murdering is ok as long as you repent? Stop being paternalistic.
I don't think that's the case, I believe he had to do it because he had to defend himself in some way. He's conscious of what he has done wrong, he even mentioned the dead visit him at night, because he is aware of what he has done wrong and that keeps him up at night. That is why he said he's wiser than the people that are watching this, have you even been watching this video? a murderer, does not have the capacity to create art about politics the unjust in this world. He's more awakened then the major of the people who are watching this because he realize this world is ran by people/government who Murder others in the name of Defending one's country and greed. Yet people can't see, but this man does. That's why he claims he's wiser, and he's right.
***** It has nothing to do with intelligence, it has to do with how conscious the individual is. Creating art is a form of expression, you don't have to be smart to express yourself. That is why I said he's aware, conscious, never once about him being smart or intelligent. That is why I said create art/expression, regarding issue with the corrupt government, so he know what's right and what's wrong? Some murderer don't feel sorry for the victim they've killed, but this man does? there is a major difference between having intelligence and Moral intelligence.
Can't lie..those are some dope ass paintings though

I think this a lovely story of redemption from the furthest depths of evil. He could still kill and murder if he wishes, but he decides to try to put forth the effort to healing the wrong he has made. For many his efforts fall short but at least he is working towards a recovery. I don't blame the family for not wanting to talk to him, it's a consequence of his actions and he's the one who knows that more than any of us viewers.
You’re a very talented artist & I’m really glad you turned your life around. I hope you find peace. 💕💕👀🖌🖼👨🎨🧑🎨🎨
You forfeit your right to happiness and comfort once you decide to destroy other lives in my opinion.
It sounds like to me, he only murdered people who tried to do him harm. So in a way, he's like soldiers. Soldiers murder people who pose a threat or would do harm to the country they are from. So are you also against soldiers, police officers, CIA, and other people who "destroy other lives" or is there a double standard?
camdevtube We don't know the what he said was true and what wasn't. Could very well be innocent people.
Brendon8910 Deeming an act of killing as right or wrong is a relative matter. For instance is it more or less egregious to stab, maim and then kill a dog than it is a human? Is killing out of defense less egregious than killing out of pleasure? Also the state of happiness itself is a relative term. But I suspect that in LU.CU.MA's case, he decided to change when he realized that painting rather than killing added to the happiness he is seeking.
Sailtothemoon No. It's just as bad to kill a dog. Yes. Killing in defense if someone is trying to kill you is legal. Killing someone out of pleasure means there is something wrong with you and you're not deemed safe to society. How can you not see that?
Brendon8910 I understand your perspective and am in no way disagreeing with you. In fact I'm one of the 18 viewers who liked your comment. I just wanted to make the point that there are gray areas with regards to the judgment people have towards the act of killing. Other then the occasional mosquito or cockroach, I'm against killing anything. Yet millions and billions of cows, pigs and birds are slaughtered annually in the U.S alone to satisfy my and other peoples appetite for meat. So hypothetically speaking, if we lived in a world where the most popular forms of meat came from cats and dogs while cows and pigs where the preferred family pets then in that world popular opinion would be that killing a dog isn't bad. Human beings are social creatures and as such we've learned that killing a member of our society does not induce happiness. But if the reverse were true, if killing another person was the cause for happiness, there's no doubt in my mind that we'd all be killers. Again I understand and appreciate your perspective, just wanted to point out that most things in life aren't just black and white.
So where is the part that he becomes the "painter" and is no longer a psycho?.... Still seems pretty fucking crazy to me
Damn I love the "Fringes" sound...
This is the exact reason I love Vice, it is because they actually have the guts to look and find these people, in other documentaries with things the faint hearted may be afraid of, the journalists may show that they are afraid but if they were truly afraid they wouldn't look for or try to contact these people. This is why I respect the journalists at Vice, this is why I appreciate the things Vice does and this shows me that the world isn't always a fun and nice place, you may meet new people, sometimes they are good and sometimes they are bad. I know I was kind of dragging on my comment but I was just speaking my mind. Thank you Vice for educating us about these things.
“They visit me at night.” That’s deep. When your past comes back to haunt you in your dreams.....
I'd describe him more as a psycho killer painter than a repented psycho killer to painter
