That said, I've seen/heard some terrible performances from her where she can't even keep it together on the instrument, and others where she hits her marks and plays very tightly. It's hard telling exactly where her technical capabilities fall when you consider that she was manic and strung out for the majority of the performances she gave between 1991-1995. After '95, she didn't really play guitar live anymore. She barely played live when they toured for Celebrity Skin.
I think she can play guitar but she plays for the purpose of songwriting and rhythm as oppose to trying to be a guitar hero. I’m sure she’s great when she plays by herself alone but on stage and trying to sing melodically complex songs, sometimes she struggles. Bear in mind though that she played on pretty much all her records and she has never once claimed to be a great guitarist, she is very modest about her playing ability.
To be honest I saw/heard many terrible performances from Kurt Cobain where he can’t keep it together on the instrument. And I don’t think Kurt Cobain is a bad guitarist, simple and repetitive but not a bad one, the thing is in several they (Kurt and Courtney) abused of the consumption of alcohol and drugs and that totally affected their performances.
Courtney Love is such a great composer and writer and does it well in the guitar. Of course when she’s high or drunk af she doesn’t have a good performance but that’s other topic. Basically, Kurt Cobain when was high or drunk did shitty performances in live too, but all we know he wasn’t Abad guitarist.
GOD, he was SUCH a cutie in the '90s. I think he's bullshitting too, although I don't doubt he learned from her- guitar is sort of a limitless instrument, and you can learn new things even from people who aren't as good of players as you. She's a decent guitar player, at least enough to make it through her own songs. Eric always did all the crafty work in the band; her abilities are pretty straightforward. I have a feeling she struggles with the singing+playing, but can play alone fairly well.
