  • In continuation with the celebrations for Dame Lansbury's 95th birthday:
Dame Lansbury is interviewed by Dennis Cunningham in regards to the 1983 revival of Mame, which she had created in 1966. She also discusses her work in film and television, including the upcoming television film "A Talent for Murder", and the changes that were occurring at the time in the Broadway theatre, which saw the shift from musical comedy to what it is today.

What Angela Lansbury said then is definitely true now. We do need Mame, a little bit of christmas, hope and something to enliven our view in these times.

Another great find! Never saw this one. But how I wanted to see her in the revival of MAME after seeing her in Sweeney Todd! But as a high school student I did not have the means to get to NYC! And I was too young to know what GYPSY was in '75. My favorite part of this interview is the irony, what is NOT said because it can only be known in hindsight: Dame Lansbury accurately states she's had many careers (reinventions etc). She movies but makes musicals separate from Broadway plays. Okay, fair enough. But her next career, arguably her biggest or at least most commercial, is about a year or two away from happening and making her name and face known to EVERYONE thanks to an amazing 12 year run! While MURDER, SHE WROTE was very well done and she was perfect in it Only stuck with the show for two seasons. It was a bit too much of a (winning) formula for me and I was always waiting for her to show us what she can REALLY do as an actress (which those of us who knew her work so well before Jessica Fletcher already knew), But I was happy for her enormous popularity and commercial success. And I would have liked to seen her win an Emmy, I think she was nominated an insane number of times w/o a win (like 13?). Looking forward to whatever you're posting (presumably about her) next!
