I agree , can't forget that valve adjustment. I learned the hard way years ago. I like the bolt on covers for after market aluminum covers. I had some aluminum clip type and the clip broke going down the road...Yikes, Have a Merry Christmas GZ.
Nice , I like those Allen head adjusters. Better control. The Buggy looks great, way jealous, I miss the sand. So true Buddy adjust the valves and fresh oil those are your VW engines best friend. Thanks for the video update and you take care. BigW:-)
I was reading that the stock tin valve covers actually cool better than these aftermarket finned aluminum covers. It makes sense when you think about it because the stamped steel is so much thinner. Finned aluminum valve covers aren't quite the cooling upgrade that they are advertised to be. Nice looking engine, EZ.
I would agree in a normal engine compartment such as a beetle but when your engine is hanging out like mine I don't think it hurts. Most aftermarket valve covers leak worse than the stock. These don't seem to do so bad. They will stay until I see a problem
I agree on a wide open engine like a sand rail. I also read that VW even offered cast aluminum valve covers years ago for engines operated in arctic conditions that ran too cool and actually needed LESS cooling.. Thanks for the reply! Great channel.
TheEZGZ cool I was planning on going for new years maybe see you out there be really cool to meet you. But I need to finish my car lol. Never finished my turbo set up.
Aloha EZ! Recently upped my pistons to 88s from AA and mechanic said valves should be adjusted at .004. I believe he did have to machine the head, or he said he did. Have you ever experienced conditions where this would be the correct gap? Thanks in advance!
.004 to .006 is what most folks do on a cold engine. They cut the head because the top of the cylinder is bigger. Going larger pistons also increases your compression ratio so I recommend premium fuel
@@TheEZGZ Great! I feel more confident doing it now. I thought it was going to be to tight. Mechanic did also say compression was I believe 8.5 to 1 and to run premium, I usually do anyways. I was literally just watching your 2110 Dream Engine Shoptalk HAHA! What I really need is a Burrito and a 2110!! So glad you are here my friend!
I know most manuals call for .006 clearance on valves. I had a local shop install 88 cylinders and pistons from AA. Engine he said had a 110 cam and compression set at 8.75-1. He noted to adjust valves to .004. I've sadly been trying to get a decent carb for a long time. It has a empi 34-3 on it that is leaky. I'm seeking to replace that. But My question, is it really necessary to adjust to .004 instead of .006? There's no mention on itemized bill he changed pushrods. Would they be swapped on a job like that? Going from stock to 88s? I have noticed on accelerator loss of power and read somewhere that incorrect valve adjustment could be a reason in addition to being out of timing.
adjusting .004 instead of .006 will just open the valves .002 more. Your build could really benefit from dual carbs. instead of a centermount single carb. Even a new 34-3 won't work smoothly. If you have the money go with dual 40 HPMX or 40 IDF webers or even dual Kadrons.
Solid advice. Sadly money is in very short supply. I actually was looking around what I could let go of in order to buy. I feel like I'm so close just need to be more patient in order to get where I need to be. Hopefully could have a set of duals by summer. Missed a nice cruise to Kohala yesterday but it's just the way it goes. Thanks for your content, if I'm ever in your area we're going for burritos!
Sure, some racers prefer it for 1/4 mile racing. Less chance for things to wrong but if you use a racing camshaft you will want to check the rocker arm geometry. You might need shims under the rocker stands. Don't forget about the option of lash caps that go over valve ends or swivel feet. No sense running heavy springs with stock cam unless of course your running ratio Rocker arms 1.25 or 1.4. Can't leave out solid rockershafts. Man oh man your really opening a can of worms. Might have to make a new video.
TheEZGZ haha , I have stock adjusters on stock rockers with solid shafts. . HD SINGLE springs with chromoly pushrods. They get a little loud when the engine is warm is that normal?
great to see you back making vids, just wondering is there a dry sump kit available for these engines . probably be mega expensive though , and also add a lot more complexity .
Thanks EZGZ for your videos. I will assemble soon my first vw aircooled shortblock. Do you know the torque for the case studs ( cylinder barrels)??? Mike
Yes I do because I have several shop manual's to refer to and you should not attempt to build a engine without one. If you can not afford one try the local library or used book store. They are every where. 8mm crankcase haves are 14 the 12mm sealing nuts are ether 18 or 25 depending. cylinder heads are 18 or 23 depending. Oil pump 8mm are 14 I have a page full of numbers depending on the year, make model of the engine which you neglected to include. GET A SHOP MANUAL and don't guess
TheEZGZ , hi thanks for reply. I bought two manuals ( Haynes manual & a German one - I live in U.K. not in US ). I read also some other books about tuning etc... I watched some of your videos ( which I always find great ) and VW Darrin‘s. Unfortunately I couldn’t find any information regarding the torque of the studs. I will assemble a dual relief case with 10mm cylinder barrel studs and dual port heads ( 1600 ) for my Formula Vee. Once again you videos are GREAT and helpful. I learned already a lot!
dang it ez.. I even watched that when you posted it... It was just a year before I started getting it running again... thanks for the reminder.. maybe I'll see ya next spring
when you were doing the closeup on #'s 3 and 4, i noticed that the valve spring retainers aren't the typical stamped steel style. do you know what they are made of and who manufactures them?
i know about the $$$. i purchased two sets for my daily drivers decades ago. when you went in close, i was thinking how much those retainers look like mine. if they are titanium, that's a nice component score and you did say the original owner spent some bucks.
Hello, regards from Mexico, excellent channel, I have a doubt on an engine vw 1600 that I am arming, only I am putting a tree of levies empi 110, my doubt is if on having put the axis of balance beams I have to put some increase to the axis, also reduce the heads, not if I could help with this doubt congratulations
Engel 110 says you can 1.11 or 1.25 ratio rockers on it. I don't think going with that much valve lift will make a nice running 1600 engine. I think it would be better to use a Engel 100 or smaller camshift profile. I think you should use stronger valve springs with dual carburetors plus mechanical advance distributor like a 009 Good Luck with your project.
@@TheEZGZ Okay, will not original balance beams serve me for this tree 110? For that already I acquired this tree, also a couple of Weber 34s And distribution type 009 empi, that I can do then?
My bolt on covers are CB performance. I could never get them to seal at the bolt holes. I recently gave up and went with stock covers. I did have to double up the gasket to get a good seal. No real telling just how beat to crap my car was before I got it.
Hey EZ, I like the fact that you explain things so well without making me feel like a dummy.I watch all the videos. Merry Christmas my friend.
Hey Steve. Thanks for your support and merry Christmas to you as well.

Is it possible to use the stock adjusters on single hd springs?

Done that when I first got the desert sand car. Check it out.
Thanks for the videos.

The oil pumps are not bad but the frigging 6 quart tanks are over $500 or I would put one on like my old sandrail
Damn number 3 always messing the day up I used a dab of red silicone to seal my valve cover nuts
Good Idea

It was on the engine and seems to be working great!

I got chromoly pushrods solid rocker shafts Gene Berg style Adjusters with swivel feet for elephant tips whatever you want to call them Engle 125.
Gene Berg parts are some of the best out there. Your engine should last a long time and make great power.
Que medida en milesimas utilisas??? 0.003????
.003 is good.

i checked that all out. i'm going with chromoly. although i've never seen a machined chromoly retainer which means they could be titanium.
Everybody and there brother sells chromoly don't forget the little keepers as well. You will know if it's Titanium $$$$$$$

Hey EZGZ, which Odyssey battery are you running? Are you happy with it?
PC625 I love it and recommend it.
Hi there, What valve gauge size are you using in there?
Engle camshaft recommends .006 cold so that's what I use.
