My headcanon is that this takes place after the red demon was exorcised and king boo is trying to get mario re-possessed, that's why luigi can just banish the red demon so easily, because HE'S DONE IT BEFORE

The reason Mario is shaking in the painting, not that he’s scared, but that he needs to speed run, and after a couple of minutes without speed running, goes insane and starts shaking violently

Here's another theory.
Mario is stuck in a painting.
The painting is like in sm64, it makes you get in another world.
So mario, by going into the painting, get in the world of cappy form odyssey
We see what happen in the painting in the vudeo "i am the cappytain now"
Wich also explain why there is ghosts with cappy , its because they all work for king boo to make mario possesed by cappy who is the speedrunner demon.
Maybe its kind of a repetitive timeline.

Might make a fun skit if something about resident evil happens or something. Their looking though the house and then they just stumble upon this seen. The thing is, Luigi didn't completely vanish SpeedRun Demon, he did connect to the soul of Matio and possesed him, thats why in subsapce emisary he needed the helo of Kirby, since its canonical that he is a beyond god beign made of pure goodnes and happy emotions, not to count the living anti-mortis-hax living beign he is (and christianity ig), he was powerful enough to purge the speedrun demon, the lore is quite interesting
God, this game was my childhood it was amazing as a kid, going back to it now it's still so good
