  • Who would have thought that the Toyota HiLux, Ford Ranger and Mitsubishi Triton would at times be battling for the top spot on the sales charts?
But that's the case, and dual cab four-wheel drives are the flavour of choice for buyers. So we assembled the HiLux Rogue, Ranger XLT and Triton GLS Premium in order to see how they compare to help you find out where you should be spending your money.

Triton is the smart choice. Might not be the best in category but does everything pretty well and is a sharp price. 👍

Why does virtually every test that has a Triton in it forget to mention the fact that it has full time 4x4 on the Super Select 2 transmission?? It's a massive bonus over all the part time transmissions.

While you are totally right. The available drive should be mentioned. But I can tell you from 6 years of experience with a part time 4wd Ranger in sometimes wet and snowy Germany and alot of towing that not having full time 4wd has never been a problem. When thing get slippery you can still turn on 4wd on the go.
And since there is about 350kg in the bed at all times and the Ranger has 265mm wide tires all around theres hardly ever wheelspin.

@@titaniumquarrion9838 Well, since a pickups main purpose is towing and hauling while maintaining high driving stability, you can't expect superb ride comfort without a payload. Every bit of comfort you gain while beeing empty, you loose on the stability side.
Thats why the 2012 Ranger was the most rigid and stable towing machine in the segment. Because it is really stiff without weight on its back.
And aren't there better choices for long distance gravel/ off-road trips than a pickup anyways?

@@deanzammit2705 well I don't know about the Triton. But the Triton equivalent we get in Europe is/ was (don't know about the newest model) no good pickup. I drove one since we were searching for a replacement for our 98 Mitsubishi L200 a couple of years ago, and I was disappointed. Towed and hauled like the 98 model. Except for some more power. It's also the model that snapped in half more than a few times.
But I hope sure hope the newer L200 isn't like that anymore.

Reliability issues with the rangers transmission should really come under fire. Our rangers automatic transmission was replaced 3 times. The workers at ford said the company keeps brushing the issues under a rug rather than declaring recalls.. they don’t fully understand the issues so they can’t create a permanent fix. Issues including, overheating transmission, Locking in gears, computer glitches, and total lock up of wheels. Would have loved to have known before spending $50,000 on a Ute supposedly engineered for the Australian roads...

@@dratempest610 not my point of view. Just facts. Claims 200hp and 470nm but clearly does not have those figures. I know since I tested a 2018 3.2 with Adblue back to back with my 2012 2.2. Both manuals and the 3.2 could not tow our maxed out trailer a tiny bit better than the 2.2. Furthermore on a steep Autobahn section I had to go from 5th to third gear. Maintaining about 25mph or so. While the 2.2 did about 43mph.
So all in all the 3.2 is no more powerful, less efficient and way louder inside. Plus it likes to blow up without prior signs. Wich granted some 2.2s did as well.
That discovery made me very dissapointed since I was planning to replace my "old" Ranger. And it's why I look forward to testing the 2.0 with 500!nm.

As for power rating here I've seen the 3.2l I5 engine tested and after market remapping of engine management systems here and our standard 3.2's are running 147kw 470nm +/- 3% there abouts and after turning (there is several different stages) anywhere from 150-175 kw and 490-580nm just with engine management tuning, all the while returning much better fuel economy! Its quite surprising how detuned the engine is. Obviously different rules and regulations on diesel engines and emissions for different countries.

My own money will go to the Toyota. In South Africa the Fords are hugely unreliable. Two friends of mine bought the Ford 3.2 and one the 2.2.
The 2.2 had an engine replacement at 30 000 km. Two gear boxes.
The 3.2 of one of my friend had gear box replacement at 60 000kms.
The other 3.2 had ..... wait for it..... three engines and one gearbox replacements all before 90 000 kms.
Two of them now bought Toyotas and one a Nissan Nivara. I own a 80series Land Cruiser 1996 model 4.2 diesel and I have only done regular services with brake pads replacement twice. I’ll never sell it.

Odd how everyone complains about the reliability, yet they still sell over 2000 units a month? My ranger now has 78000kms and I have had no issues apart from a seal on the clutch slave cylinder.
But in all honesty I hope the new 2.0 Biturbo is a great engine (being a Ford engine and not the Volvo puma engines).

The Triton looks good but does not sell well in SA and cant really comment on its ride quality but Toyota Hilux is the best in terms of comfort and ride quality. Ranger surely not the best. 2 litre TT engine is too puny and highly strung for a 2.5 tonne caravan (Turbo generated horsepower from a small engine just no substitute for displacement in a towing scenario). 10 speed gearbox hunts like crazy. Yes I had one and sold it in under 2 years. Only good thing about the ranger is the tough looks, ride and comfort that's all. These Utes are light commercial vehicles, not heavy duty machineries, if you wanna tow a big caravan buy a Land cruiser TDV8. Dual cab Utes are merely small roundabouts. Triton is winner in my view. great value, strong Mivec engine, decent Aisin 6 speed gearbox, great super select II 4wd system, reliable. True it doesn't tow as heavy, then again you really shouldn't.

At least be able to tow at the speed limit. 80 90 is good and safe. Going to slow is not safe either. Mind you the 2 liter don't have as much of a broad torque curve like the 3.2. There's a difference between being able to "tow" it and being able to hang on to it if it gets loose. These 3500kg towing capacity figures are a joke. Horses for courses - my Toyota 2.7 gave me 17 years with one clutch replacement - with zero other work required - took me 1 week to sell it for the equivalent 9000 Aus dollar - I had a choice between buying the Ford Ranger 3.2 XLT or the Toyota’s 2.8 - I did not find the Toyota’s ride on tarmac harsh at all / in fact it was too soft for my liking - hence the Ranger was way to soft stock - I tow my boat with ease as well - I personally find the interior of the Toyota far more robust & with more storage spaces and can take full size mugs - the doors feel more solid - the Toyota in low range is a beast off road and will easily tackle grade 3-4 off road tracks which I’ve done with OEM tyres - I’ve now put in an Old Man Emu 2” lift & more aggressive AT tyres - I recently hired a Ford 2.2 and did 1000km in Namibia - where the Ford wins is in the comfort of the front seats - way better than the Toyota & brilliant fuel consumption averaging 7,7 ltr per 100km - if anyone is on a budget I would look at buying this older model - just upgrade the suspension & better tyres
Unfortunately Ford Ranger has zero resale value compared to Toyota in South Africa - so if you’re one of those people that like to keep the same 4x4 for over 6 years - you will get nothing for a Ford 10 yrs down the line

If you want a tough, honest and extremely reliable Dual Cab..... buy a D-max or Triton.
Reviewer's have an obligation to major companies like toyota and ford, and that obligation is to not throw the brand under the bus and tell you all the current issues plaguing the Ranger and Hilux, which are issues that the brands themselves dont want to admit to due to not wanting recalls.
Do your research and review the claims being made by Ranger and Hilux owners, there is ALOT...... as opposed to the Dmax or Triton which has next to nothing.
On the plus side, you'll save yourself $20k.

The D-Max is good, as is the Triton. (Read my reviews and/or watch my vids about those utes and you'll soon get the distinct impression that I don't mind them.) CarsGuide reviewers don't have an obligation to any companies to "not throw the brand under the bus". Our website (carsguide.com.au) deals with vehicle problems/issues/recalls in specific sections of the site, including up-to-the-minute news coverage of such things. As reviewers, our obligation is to deliver an honest and objective assessment of the vehicle being tested. We are beholden to no vehicle manufacturer. There isn't a ton of time or space in a review to cover owner problems/issues (actual, rumoured or perceived), which is why we deep-dive into them in those other sections I mentioned. Matters, such as Toyota's DPF issues, do get mentioned in reviews and then we indicate where more info can be found and it's then up to the reader whether they want to investigate further. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. - Crafty

@@carsguide Appreciate the detailed response, my sentiment towards Carsguide.com was largely due to the fact that I assumed it was still 50% owned by Newscorp and the ad revenue at stake across Newscorp's various media outlets from the likes of Ford and Toyota was far too large to jeopardise.
I realise now that Newscorp sold carsguide.com a few years ago, so apologies.
However, as informed consumers and viewers we know motoring journalists must tread very carefully around sensitive issues such as Hilux's DPF and Rangers gearbox problems, otherwise they risk being removed from future opportunities to review their branded range.

I think you guys were fair enough in this review compared to other biased reviews from other channels. You didn't mention everything worth mentioning which would have made the review a bit more fair and really would have shown the differences between the vehicles. The ranger is a really good vehicle other than reliability. The hilux has never really been all that it's said to be past and present. It's just too overrated and I can't see why it's so popular when it has so many problems with the dpf. The triton is the best all rounded, the most reliable and the most sensible choice. Can't see why people look past it and always underestimate it. I do think however that the triton is better in 4low with the diff lock on than the Hilux. As I've seen in the past the Hilux struggles in really slick mud when compared to the triton. So there's that. Would go for the triton over any other pick up because it's really the best in my opinion. It's safe, strong, reliable, really powerful for a smaller displacement, awesome off-road, comfortable on road etc. Cheers guys.

value at 50k plus lol. So go to put bull bar lights and upgrade suspension. You have to upgrade the suspension because they cant handle real weights If you wanted to actually test it. Only putting 550kgs in the back is a joke. I put 800 kgs in the back of 2005 Holden ute and it could handle it, If you are doing actual 4wd you will be ripping out half of the standard stuff so you can go offroad. These utes are for the bosses who turn up and work sites for five mins and complain how hard their life is. They then drop their kids off to school and go for long lunches. I havent seen to many tradies with 60k ute that could handle real work

Towing capacities stated in this video are misleading to say the least when put into context, GCM (Gross Combination Mass) must be looked at when towing. For example: Triton towing 3100kg allows for 743kg of payload, where as the Ranger towing 3500kg only allows for 222kg (1 bloke, towbar and a couple of tools, family would have to stay home). Even if the Ranger towed 3100kg, its allowable payload would be 622kg which is still less than the Triton towing the same mass.

    • @jarrodzebra2369
      @jarrodzebra2369 4 роки тому +1

I've always looked at cars and subtracted gvm from the gcm and worked out maximum towing capacity from those two numbers. After all you want to add a bull bar and all the gear plus family for a trip away. For Triton it would be be 2985kg towed if you want full capacity of gvm
For the Ford ranger it's 2800kg
      And hilux 2850kg
So if you want to tow things "legally" using the whole gvm of your vehicle the Triton can tow more than both

From the comments of three of you I do not see the ranger as being on top. Far from it. Overall the triton on discription is far superior to that of the ranger. As far as I can see all of you picked the ranger because it has five cylinders. There's a lot more to look at such as warranty . Don't be fooled by the 3.5 towing. Technically the triton is superior on weight in the back 740 kgs ranger 240 kgs. With the respective towing weights. I would only tow 3.5 tonnes with a 200 land cruiser .not with a dual cab.
