Hello folks, as a number of you have mentioned the Hilux Rogue does indeed have a disc rear end, apologies for the oversight/confusion. However, the Hilux's braking performance can't match the others, even with the same hardware!

It's possible for toyota to make the engine sound less when hard on the gas pedal but when the engine has more noise silencers a driver feelsbso comfortable forgetting the much strain they are giving the engine and that is why ford ranger and amarok engines don't stay longer than the hilux

It’s funny the most risky part of any business is driving, yet safety seems not to be raised in this area. Toyota would only manage 3 stars in a 2020 crash test. Toyota rushed to get the 19 test done till 24 the results are worse in that test than Dmax Mazda ranger and amarok did in the strict 2020 test.

@paulmcintosh5589 Safety starts with the driver. Everything else is a bonus. I'm not sure which Hilux you're referring to, but my SR5 has a bucket load of safety built into it, considering it's fundamentally a 4WD Ute. Again, it's a Ute, not a cotton wool box. P.S. I'm an ex Audi VW Porsche Technician. If I won one, I'd sell it straight away.

Totally agree Josh - I actually own a 2010 Auto diesel Hilux with very little tech to go wrong ‘out there’ because it has a conventional handbrake, analogue dials and old style aircon - the elephant in the room is that the new Ford Ranger is already giving owners grief with failing digital instrument panel and stopping dead at 80km and we know that bogun Ford have happily joined Land Rover, Mercedes and Jeep at the bottom for poor reliability - wouldn’t touch a VW with a barge pole - Toyota Hilux every time.

Matt Campbell from therightcar? Says about the Hilux...Sorry to break it to you, but it's not the best 4x4 pick-up. It's not even close.
While it might be improved over the standard HiLux, a lot of the old niggles and annoyances remain. It rides better, yes, and it looks tougher than ever. But this grade is more expensive, has a lower payload, and doesn't have a power bump over the standard models.
It also has a slightly more impressive cabin, but it's SO FAR BEHIND THE TIMES in terms of interior design, technology and finishes, that it feels like it is stuck in the late twenty-teens.
It's also got shorter service intervals than most utes, and still rides horribly, in comparison.
So why would you choose it over any other ute? You tell me. I'd love to hear anything other than "because it's a Toyota", "great off road", "best resale value", or "unbreakable".

The only issue I have is that this comparison doesn't really factor in the reliability and durability of the cars over the longer term. It is relatively easy to build a car that drives nicely and has fancy gizmos but far harder to build one that will last 20 years and still keep going. The Ford and VW's are nice trucks but surely a much greater emphasis, if making any recommendations, should include long term ownership and reliability. Also to criticize a car for having fluid power steering is mind boggling. Off road in particular being able to feel different undulations is vital. I rarely post on UA-cam any criticisms but I feel this comparison misses the mark for potential owners of this type of car

Unfortunately these days nearly all new vehicles have a heap of tech to keep them going under the bonnet. But I think you are referring to the screens and buttons or lack thereof? I also think that these manufacturers have been around for a bit longer than any of us, to be honest. Surely they would have some past experience they can build on when it comes to manufacturing a vehicle regardless if it's Toyota, Ford or VW. Just my thoughts anyway. I just compared a Wildtrak vs PanAmericana back to back, and the WT was hands-down the most compliant, comfortable ride.
No point the VW having a sporty, responsive feel when you’re feeling every ripple in the road surface.
Super noticeable on the same urban road, so would be unbearable on corrugations and poor road surfaces.
Doing long km drives for work throughout regional WA, the choice for me was a no-brainer.
Also has the added reassurance of a dealer in most regional centres.
Interior layout on the WT is also a lot more practical.

This is the issue with a lot of car reviews, I would suggest that the bias towards Ford has been purchased, hence the continued statements of being a market leader. There have been so many documented issues with the next generation Ranger starting at cost, delivery times, technology issues, tail, shaft issues Overheating, and in some cases, complete engine and brake shutdowns and yet car reviews continue to say it is a market leader. The cost alone on all of these vehicles is astronomical and completely out of the range of the average family of which the Ranger especially was allegedly meant to be designed for, designed with Australian families in mind was the quote. So long as we have certain consumers who, like a pack of rampant teenage fans keep buying these overpriced vehicles, which in some cases all come out of the same factory thinking that they are getting a bargain , dealerships will continue to push what is substandard products at the exorbitant prices completely robbing Australian consumers. When you think for 98,000 you can buy a ram which is like driving a couch compared to the Pokey Little Mid spec vehicles presented here for roughly the same price, it’s any wonder large American vehicles are becoming more appealing, while more budget conscious buying is going towards LDV and GWM

Good review. Love the new Amarok which is making the Ranger look a bit dated already. Might get one once they've worked out any bugs that come with a first release model. Also, regarding the comparison between the Hilux and the others, you are comparing newly released first gen models to a last gen model in the Hilux. The mid size truck segment in Australia is only starting to see the massive change from workhorse to everyday driver with comfort in mind. If the Tacoma in the USA is any indication of what to expect from the new Hilux, then Ford and VW and all others in this segment will be in for a rocky ride very soon and enjoy it while they can.

How bizarre that you didn't address the fact that the Hilux is still only a part-time 4x4. A wet highway with a load in the back you want all four wheels putting power to the ground. The Toyota's inferior payload, antiquated 4x4 system, engine that was barely salvaged after the massive DPFgate class action makes me wonder why people would even consider it. The Toyota should be $60k maximum against the two modern V6 opponennts that have AWD availability like every 2023 4x4 should have.

You Toyota people like to talk about reliability sure if you are talk about about the L series 2L,3L,5L anything after that is rubbish 1kd, 2kd, Kz not mention the c series 2c,3c,😂. My humble opinion hilux fans there is a new king you all can lie to yourself but the facts don't lie, you may sometime in the future become king again but for now your just a part of the royal family 😂.
