Super excited to vlog with it. the last mic I had was a cheaper version of the Rhode micro and whenever I would talk from behind the camera it would be too quiet but I was always too lazy to switch it around lol thanks for this video!

Then I noticed more of the audio bouncing off your walls when you used the D4. There’s so many times I’ve had my levels clip and I wish I had an alternate source to cover my backside. I have the Rode Video Micro already (great mic!), and I don’t hear much of a difference between the two in your tests. I will be adding the Deity to my arsenal. Thanks so much for posting!

For sure a good mic if you want something light for travel, simple to use, doesn’t need batteries and is captures good sound, then the rode mic is a great buy! Thanks for sharing your video!
I've been waiting for something like this for years! I can't believe it's taken companies this long to come up with this solution in a single microphone package. I also really like how Deity put in a little extra thought into how it "could" be used by adding a switch for front/rear mic configuration - AND they also added the input for something like a lav mic. I would hope that their next one takes it a step further by adding powered options similar to the Rode NTG...but this is one hell of a game-changer as it is!

I was so glad when the Videomicro NTG came out, it's my standard goto mic now for just about everything. I definitely think Deity has been innovating better in recent years, because I keep seeing Deity come out with a product and then a few months later Rode is playing catch-up with their nearly identical release.
@@dunnadidit Actually I was really confused by that in your video. The one that came with mine is much too large, and falls off on its own. I had to jerry rig some padding on mine to give it a tighter fit.
Shadda - there should be a rubber ring on the inside, and then there’s a little ring on the mic just in front of the shockmount. It doesn’t feel like it goes on but if you grab at the base of the rubber bit and just pull hard, it does actually slip onto the bigger part and fit into that ridge. Unless for some reason you don’t have the rubber thing, in which case you might have a counterfeit videomicro (which I’ve heard people talk about before)
Interesting.. came for the Rode review but now I'm intrigued by the Deity duo mic (didn't know I needed this but after seeing NOW I DO! LOL!) Thanks for the testing - I listened through my headphones and the comparison is clear. Diety sounds like it's recorded higher/louder? And you can hear the outside noise more - like the white noise for lack of better words? The sounds of ... air? Lol? Rode sounds lower and slightly richer, not as tinny. Outside, it does a better job to muffle the white noise. Could it be because its just recorded at a lower volume? Hmm can't really tell. I wonder how they would both sound if the Deity would lower itself in in volume to match that of Rode's. Perhaps maybe the same quality? Thanks for the review though... now I'm going to research Diety lol!
I want to use it primarily as a splitter that will allow my to use the Deity d3 Pro for the front and the d4 for the back. Then when on gimbal I could use both front and back on the D4. what I want to know is whether the Deity D3 Pro smart mic technology will connect and give me a green light going through the D4 or whether I will get an orange 'not yet connected' light.
I just bought a splitter cable to use the D3 Pro for front and my Rode video micro pointed backwards. the splitter cable just leaves me with the orange standby light and no audio from the d3 Pro, so the d4 looks like a good solution.
That input jack is actually huge. This with a lav (or even Rode Wireless Go) and you have super compact backup audio for a one person vocal. How many times your lav has scratch noises of cloth, or handling noises on the shotgun, or picking up constant GSM signals on one mic, but not the other. Or doing a commentary (for example vlogs) with perfect vocal (lav), but also ambient sound (deity) and you can mix it to taste independently. Or you can create a compact a stereo X-Y-configuration with another D4 or Videomicro. All without needing a hard to come by Dual Mono => Stereo splitter. Only question is, if you can manage the audio levels correctly for two mics at once (not a problem if you connect a wireless receiver.)
Thank you for this. I agree that the sound from either is about the same. I am looking for a mic that I can use with an extension cable, on a boom. I had one and a cable but they both produced noise, so I would like a recommendation for a mic and cable that work properly. Cheers.
I have the Rode Wireless Go, which is superb but sometimes I just don't feel like messing with it or having that clunky box clipped to my shirt or sweater. I'm looking for an plug in mic and I'm going to try the duo - which I have just heard of today. it's on sale on Amazon for $68, so not much of a price difference now :)
The dual capsule mic is really cool. I've got a swivel mount for mine, but you do have to move it every time you want to change it from front to back. Can't get the Diety Duo here in Saigon yet, but I will be watching for it. It looks like a must for my audio kit. Good Show!!!
I use the polar pro axis to be able to swivel my mic sometimes too, but I can’t count the amount of times that I’ve forgotten to swivel it back lol 🤦🏻♂️
Yup! The deity has that too. Though I must admit that in the time I’ve had the rode I’ve always found it more annoying than helpful. I wish the part that you clipped onto wasn’t also the part that spins so you didn’t have to always clip and unclip. It’s not a huge deal, just a weird little thing.
@@dunnadidit I know same mount, the big winner from all this is Rycote 😂. I didn't know if you knew thats all because it really isn't obvious. I feel like I've nearly sheared off the cable a few times fighting with it, forgetting to take it out of the clip before spinning it.
I like the sound of the Deity over the Rode. Your video helped solidify my choice-thanks! Should be "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" but I see you already caught it post upload ;)
Thanks for an excellent comparison! I think there is a point to plugging the video micro into the D4........stereo.......something no one seems interested in anymore... but...we do have TWO ears. What would the audio sound like if he rode was plugged into the D4 (as they both seem to have similar quality and audio levels....) and they were aimed one 30 degrees left and one 30 degrees right? That would be very interesting. I use a Sennheiser MKE440 which does this, at significantly more cost and the result is great, audio centered on the subject in front, but still stereo, so it sounds very natural. It is not always someone speaking we would like to record, but everything around us. Given these two microphones don't require the hassle of batteries and have a small form factor it would be interesting to see what stereo, yet forward facing audio could be captured. Can you try this perhaps and compare? I would be very interested. Thanks!
Yeah that could be interesting! Kind of an ORTF setup but with 2 different mics. You could even get a stereo effect by just mounting the mic sideways and having 180° stereo.
I'm listening to your comparison with high-quality headphones and I didn't hear the difference between them. I ordered the Deity d4 duo because it has two microphones and it's great.
One issue I've had with those miniature microphones is that when it get's windy - whilst the fur screen stops most of the wind noise - the mics seemed to get super choppy. Ended up settling with the Rode Videomic NTG (much bigger and more ££) and the Rode Wireless Lav (having to turn it on is annoying)
Great job with your comparison. I was interested in finding out if others who are using the Deity v-mic 4 duo have experienced cracking sounds when in windy situations. That's why I'm disappointed in mine. I love having the ability to narrate behind the camera while capturing sounds out front on my hikes (my Channel's theme), but there doesn't seem to be any other duo mic system on the market. Thanks for your review.
Hi, thanks for the nice video. I only make documentaries outdoors, for working people (ethnic groups in remote countryside). I would like to ask a question please: I have a GH6 camera and its microphone is good. Again, I don't use the camera in my country, but only when traveling far. If you were me, would you use a small external mic or would you do without it? Thank you.
now I am totally confused @lol. Need suggestion for dual work (a) short film making outdoor and (b) voice over / narration indoor shall I buy 1. zoom or 2. rode mic 3. is audio interface needed ? what will solve both purpose, thanks
I mean, it really depends on the situation, most filmmakers and audio people have a bunch of tools that fit each situation. You don’t necessarily need an interface if you’re going to go straight into the camera or with a zoom though.
Which mic were you using at the beginning of the video during the "video start" segment? It sounded different than the other two and it seemed to pick up noise really well from that distance.
You missed testing/comparing the key feature. Walking around with the rode on talking behind the camera compared with the Deity. Then we could see the actual difference talking into the back of the rode Vs the actual smaller mic on the diety 🤦🏽♂️. Would be interested to see if there's a big difference
Haha I guess I could have included that but let me just tell you as someone who has forgotten to turn the mic around enough times, it sounds terrible when you talk into the back of the videomicro. I guess it might have solidified the potential need for the extra mic the D4 DUO has though.
Dunna Did It Yeah I know what you mean as I have the Micro too and used it behind and it’s alright but not great. Just curious of the real difference with this new one as it does seem like a great idea.
Regarding the Rode 'tilting forward', the grooves in the clamp are there to place the cable in to and this will stopping it tilting forward ;) And to be picky, you didn't say the whole alphabet as it's 'jumps' not 'jumped' 😜 Great review by the way, I'm looking at getting the Deity myself.
Just wanted to say thanks for a great video, very comprehensive. I usually walk away from these comparisons with a pretty clear winner but this ones tough. I like the crispness of the Videomicro... but it's a bit harsh and would need some de-essing. The D4 is a bit flat out of the box but I suppose that would make for more versatility in the EQ. While trying to find a price on the D4 I stumbled upon this cheaper ($60/$64) dual cardioid option on amazon- it's got the same switches too, but no input jack. Seems it just released as well- no reviews on the more expensive one and only 1 review on the cheaper. Figured I'd share in case you wanted to do a video comparison of the budget option with the D4. I doubt it sounds *as* good (it doesn't even have a brand behind it as far as I can tell) but it could definitely be a useful option for people tight on funds who need the versatility. Cheers!
Great video again! perfect timing! I had a quick question I trust your judgment. It has to do with two products you did a review on. (Bag) I'm trying to decide on the PRVKE 21L or the Boundary Supply Prima System. I'm liking the Prvke more but is that the wise pick? You had it for months Thanks!! I'll be using it for my Fujifilm X-T4 & Mavic Air 2 ( or is there a better bag I don't know of? thanks!!
I’ll take my prvke over the Prima any day. Not that the prima was bad... but I really love the prvke! I have videos on both of them too if you wanna check that out :)
Absolute best and smartest way to answer the question : "How can a microphone be twice as good ?". Aside from the joke, it's a clever design (that aux. input by the side !), at a nice price, with a workflow-oriented signal routing... 20/20 for me. And, in the meantime, Rode has yet to released a dual-channel wireless microphone system... when Deity has a hell of a good one, and the tiny French brand Picogear runs out of stock with their brillant "Picomic" system. The D4 DUO can serve as a main microphone when weight matters, but also as a backup for interviews in case the HF fails. It can even be considered a micro-mixer, with its input allowing for a wireless or ambiant microphone to join the team. It sounds great, with some extra clarity when compared to the Rode, making it better when source stands away from the operator and his toolkit. I see this new offer as a future hit, and guess we'll see hundreds as mic-of-choice for the conventions/fairs/exhibitions to come. Thanks for your good work, very appreciated !
@@dunnadidit hey dude, I submitted to your video competition! My very, very, VERY FIRST video submission to one of these kinds of things... I'm scared! lol
I'm on the fence. I have different mics for different usages...I'm also a gadget junkie!! The Deity is intriguing. I already have a Rode mic... Thank you for your vid!!
It would help if you had the microphone sitting correctly in the shock mount. RODE logo facing upwards to reduce wind noise and cable sitting in the grooves to reduce shock mount movement..
How does the rose logo facing upwards reduce wind noise? Also ideally you want your shock mount to be able to move so that it absorbs the shocks. That’s how shockmounts are designed. If you stop them from moving, then there is no point in having the shockmount at all and you’ll get more handling and movement noise transfer into the microphone.
@@dunnadidit I spoke to Rode and the slots on the shock mount base are for the cable to be located. Do you really want your microphone flopping around? Remove the deadcat and look at the recessed grooves on the side of the mic, they are designed to help cancel out wind noise. Logo facing upwards..
Hi my dear friend, I am very ignorant about audio among many other things, I am a Professional Wedding Photographer which is new to video and I am wondering if I can use the COMICA Boom X-U transmitter to plug a Rode VideoMic GO II to build a wireless boom mic along with the lav mic on the other transmitter so I can have a dual set up with a lav and a shotgun mic at the same time. Bests regards from a Venezuelan follower!
I like the video and the review of the products. I own the rode micro, but im shocked both mics are pretty quiet for the distance you were at. I am in pursuit of a new mic that will work with my new 360 camera and get good 360 sound. if you can find something that is small and does 360 sound please doa review on that. and tag me somehow XD
Super funny too because, unlike some other releases, there was no lifted NDA or anything like that, just total coincidence that a handful of us dropped at the same time.
I liked the sound from both of them, do you know if the Deity puts out more gain from the front mic? The reason I ask is my Canon M50, I need to turn the internal gain down to prevent hiss, so a louder input than the Rode Videomicro would be better. Great video, thanks for sharing.
What would you do with the extra microphone on the D4 DUO?

Unfortunately, there is no level control for each input so you’re stuck with what they give you.
@@dunnadidit Thanks! As the second microphone is -10db, does that also apply to the input?
Which one would be better for picking up ambient environment sounds between these two? Guessing the Deity due to having bi-directional pick up.
Thank you for this. I agree that the sound from either is about the same. I am looking for a mic that I can use with an extension cable, on a boom. I had one and a cable but they both produced noise, so I would like a recommendation for a mic and cable that work properly. Cheers.
Hmm, I’m not 100% sure what you mean. You want a mic that comes with a long enough cable that you can boom it without an extension?
Sold on the duo mic system!!
The Deity is a no brainer for me! Thanks for the honest review!
Thanks for watching!
7:20 what color is that on your walls? so pleasing to the eye! also great video!!
Can't wait for D4 .... thanks for review, new sub from Indonesia. You are big brother of Peter McKinnon, aren't you? 😊
The cable clips into the little notches on the mount so that it doesn't hang forward, hopefully that helps.
Haha yeah I didn’t know for a long time until Cody wanner pointed it out!
Love the pronunciation proactivity. Catch it ahead of time!
I like the sound of the Deity over the Rode. Your video helped solidify my choice-thanks! Should be "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" but I see you already caught it post upload ;)
🤦🏻♂️ lol
Great vid. Is there a higher quality mic with the same dual mic feature as the D4 Duo?
Not that I’m aware of!
Great video man, helped me make my decision! I'm buying it for my ZV1!
Nice!
Wow pretty cool! I like the dual Mike feature with the D4
Nice!!
Thank you decision made Deity for me for its dual capabilities.
Interesting! The NTG is a solid mic!
Really appreciate this! I bought a rode videomic but cancelled the order to get the deity!
Canadian? I’m subscribing! I think I’m vibing with deity duo
Heck yes! 🇨🇦
Thank you for this Review sir!! :D
My pleasure!! I’ll try!!
Thank you, super useful review.
Thanks!!
Maybe you can use the input for injecting timecode signal?
nice duo 😲
The notches in the screw are meant to hold the cable down so it doesn't bounce
Yup! The deity has them too!
@@dunnadidit Yea it's basically the same Rycote Lyre mount in different color
Yup!
I have the video micro and my only complaint is the wind screen is HUGE! 😂
Great vid as always, nice option to have.
Thanks!
I have em both. Cuz I have a ton of random mics. Lol. But I like the diety and the options it gives us
Regarding the Rode 'tilting forward', the grooves in the clamp are there to place the cable in to and this will stopping it tilting forward ;)
And to be picky, you didn't say the whole alphabet as it's 'jumps' not 'jumped' 😜
Great review by the way, I'm looking at getting the Deity myself.
Cheers!
Cool! Thanks for sharing! It was really only a matter of time until someone but deity’s style haha.
Great video again! perfect timing! I had a quick question I trust your judgment. It has to do with two products you did a review on. (Bag)
I'm trying to decide on the PRVKE 21L or the Boundary Supply Prima System.
@@dunnadidit Thanks again for the input!! Yes I checked out both videos. Going with the PRVKE 21L. Thanks brother!
Who else Had to skip till the minute 5:50 to see the micro test? 🙋🏽♂️
I gotta say dunna, i love the way you framed this video.
Thank you so much!! I wish the room was a bit more symmetrical but I’m pretty happy lol
@@dunnadidit I think its perfect. Makes me feel like im almost having a one on one lesson haha. Great work.
THAT IS FRICKIN GENIUS!!! I'm gonna attach Rode wirelessGO to 2nd channel! It's like giving us two channels... wow.
The funny thing is that you had two channels the whole time! left and right! But no one is really using them.
@@dunnadidit hey dude, I submitted to your video competition! My very, very, VERY FIRST video submission to one of these kinds of things... I'm scared! lol
Awesome! Good luck!!
I'm on the fence. I have different mics for different usages...I'm also a gadget junkie!! The Deity is intriguing. I already have a Rode mic...
Thank you for your vid!!
We are the same! I keep telling myself I should sell some of my older gear but I LOVE HAVING IT AROUND JUST IN CASE! Haha thanks for watching!
Bests regards from a Venezuelan follower!
sure, worth the extra 30 given the balance and ease of use. Thanks! Both nice mics!
Right on!
Can you use a blue yetti mic with either of these mics?
Neat! That's a smart upgrade reallly
It really is!
They both sound different, but I don't think one sounds necessarily better than the other, however that rear mic is super helpful I feel.
I like the video and the review of the products.
I own the rode micro, but im shocked both mics are pretty quiet for the distance you were at.
I used the rode mic on a moving trolley and filmed the trolley behind me and still picked up voices from the other trolley pretty far away as we drove down the freeway.
but alas, i don't think the deity is what i'm looking for. I am in pursuit of a new mic that will work with my new 360 camera and get good 360 sound.
if you can find something that is small and does 360 sound please doa review on that. and tag me somehow XD
Crazy, I just saw an ad for the Deity mic a few days before all these Deity videos dropped.
Super funny too because, unlike some other releases, there was no lifted NDA or anything like that, just total coincidence that a handful of us dropped at the same time.
What mic are you using for this video sir? Super clear!
I liked the sound from both of them, do you know if the Deity puts out more gain from the front mic? The reason I ask is my Canon M50, I need to turn the internal gain down to prevent hiss, so a louder input than the Rode Videomicro would be better. Great video, thanks for sharing.
From what I could tell, the front and back mics were darn near identical in gain.
@@dunnadidit Thanks for checking Dunna, have a great day.
You too!!
but how do you pronounce SIRUI?
Let me call the Queen and see what she says.
