I would watch Eight Crazy Nights yearly as my own Christmas tradition and now knowing the backstory behind the movie made me appreciate it even more.
Thanks, Cecil, for another terrific Exploring episode. Your research is always so thorough and proof there is always a story behind the making of any film. I remember that Thanksgiving in 2002, which had such a full slate of films, and I was traveling out of town for the holiday. I remember seeing "Treasure Planet" at a small-town theater and when I got back home (and back to work), I went with a friend one weeknight to see "Extreme Ops". "Eight Crazy Nights" turned out to be the one film I didn't see in theaters that holiday. I saw it much later on VHS rental. When I finally saw the film, I was probably just as surprised and disturbed as anyone else. However, the animation was so good, and it felt like a very personal film for Adam Sandler. While I am not Jewish myself, I thought it was a wonderful thing for Sandler to make a Hanukkah holiday film. I also knew that some of the belly laughs I had were okay, since Adam Sandler wanted everyone to laugh, whether the audience was Jewish or not. It's too bad the film didn't do better in the box office, and I certainly missed out on some much-needed holiday laughs that Thanksgiving.
I got my first tattoo the day this was released here in South Africa. First got the tattoo, then went to the cinema and watched this. Haven't seen it in years. Definitely need to check it out again
Seeing this video has me seeing this movie in a much different light than the one that had been cast over it in the years since I first saw it. Thank you for this & Happy Holidays!

I wanted to recommend to you, Cecil, the animated series, "Blue Eye Samurai." Yes, it's 3-D animation, but it is done with care and has a unique look. It has the look of 17th century Japanese illustrations. It really is one of the best animated shows I've seen in years.
It's very good, imo. I would recommend, however, that you do not watch the trailers before seeing it because the trailers don't do the show justice.@@GoodBadFlicks

My GODS, I loved The Maxx and The Head back in the day! Also, I don't care how crappy many of Adam Sandler's later films were, _Billy Madison_ and _Happy Gilmore_ are two of the funniest movies I have ever seen. Funny story: I was in grad school when _Happy Gilmore_ came out. There was this girl, Sue, who...well, I couldn't tell if she had a thing for me or what--I was completely clueless when it came to women. But one day when I was working at the word processing lab, she was hanging out, talking to me, and mentioned that she wanted to see the new Adam Sandler flick. I'd LOVED _Billy Madison_ so I said: "Yo, you want to hit the theatre this weekend?" She said yes! So we went to the film...and I was laughing so hard at the scene in which two old guys are talking while behind them Happy's constantly-bleeped-out tirade is playing on a TV that I STARTED FARTING UNCONTROLLABLY. That just made me laugh even harder, and by then I was kicking the seat in front of me, howling like a damn hyena, and I even fell into the aisle. I swear to god I am not exaggerating. Not even a little. Sue just sat next to me absolutely MORTIFIED. Never saw her again after that. I still laugh just as hard at that scene to this day...but, fortunately, the uncontrollable flatulence doesn't happen anymore. Most of the time, anyway.
I actually saw this in the theater and absolutely loved it. I even still have my ticket stub, because I'm one of those weirdos. 😆 My feelings have changed some over the years, but I don't hate it now or anything. I just don't really watch it anymore.
Firing 2D workers to gut union labor is believable. I had a 1 year job at 7-11 where the owner fired someone every year so he wouldn’t have to pay the automatic 25c per hour raise.
@@GoodBadFlicks I get that I appreciate you aren't a rumor channel you might mention a thing but if you don't have facts you'll outright state that and that's admirable.
It's probably for the best that that Rob Schneider film never came together. He's the kind of actor that's only funny in small snippets sharing the screen with an actor who's actually funny.
Im happy this video was made. Before the end of 2023 I saw Saberspark saying how much he hated Eight Crazy Nights. Films need Negative and Positive opinions, and ultimately to leave things to the viewer instead of "This is what you should think". GoodBadFlicks is a balanced channel, while CinemaWins is a positive one and I enjoy both of them.
I did like this movie as a kid. Ironically. Looking back on it now, it still holds up a bit. I personally wouldn't say it's one of my favorite holiday movies. But I do watch it around the Christmas holidays time to time. But no matter what you say, the animation of this film is AMAZING! It's one of the best you'll ever see! Next to The Iron Giant and many more like it! I think Eight Crazy Nights is good enough as it is. No sequel needed. Also Seth Kearsley on Kingdom Hearts! I've heard many things about the animation show! And as a Kingdom Hearts fan, I really wanted to see it! Luckily I was able to see a few of the episodes on UA-cam before Square made Seth take them down. It was pretty decent and it did show Seth was a fan of the series! Who knows, maybe one day he'll get the chance to do the show someday! Great exploring video, Cecil! One of my favorites you've done! MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!
It's said that the reason the Kingdom Hearts show was cancelled was because series creator Tetsuya Nomura didn't want there to be two different continuities for the same material and confuse people. This is despite the fact that the Kingdom Hearts manga exists, adapting nearly every game in the series while changing stuff like comedic subplots and the lack of Halloween Town (I assume this is due to another manga publisher owning the rights to Nightmare Before Christmas). Nomura is kinda a hypocrite.
For my information, traditional animation ain't dead because there's been great modern animated series from Disney like The Owl House, Big City Green, Star Vs. the Forces of Evil, Gravity Falls, Hailey Does It!, Ducktales 2017 even Mickey Mouse Shorts. Also from Nick like the Loud House. Looney Tunes Cartoons made 81 shorts before they end it but making a big comeback traditional animated film next year also Genndy Tartakovsky's Fixed, Sony's new R-Rated animated film. Animation got saved thanks to those whom animating those series for years. Least, 2-D ain't dead. Not for a long shot. P.S. I hate that film a lot. MERRY CHRISTMAS, GOODBAD FLICKS!
A lot of those shows aren't traditional animation but art that is animated with ToonBoom. Look for any cartoon where there are no discernible joints and 90% of the time they are ToonBoom. Merry Christmas to you too!
Eight Crazy Nights is one of those movies that has been shredded to pieces due to annoying voices but still got praised for the animation. I miss great 2D animation, thank god we still have Genndy Tartakovsky to fill that hole with Primal & Unicorn: Warriors Eternal.
instead of being upset about product placement and how it was written and how offended you are, HE ACTUALLY talks about its conception in a not bias way! personally i'd have my kid watch this over freakin skibididipidi toilet any day.
Unfortunately, talking positively or neutral about a subject doesn't get as many views as hate/rage posts. Not changing my style, just pointing out the frustration.
The People Telling Him to get on another project before the movie came out reminds me of how Walter Hill mentioned he was lucky he was already in production on The Warriors at the time The Driver opened because if he hadn't the flop of the movie would have killed his directorial career.
Yeah, a lot of directors/actors and what not try to have jobs lined up in case they have a flop. So many have more or less been ousted from the industry because it is insanely fickle.
I learned about this movie a few weeks ago when I scrolled through Tubi, I watched it right after your review. What an odd, vulgar and weird movie but for some reason it has it's heart in the right spot!✌️☺️
I barely heard of this movie and I don't like Adam Sandler and the idea sounds dumb, but man this video was awesome and made the movie sound way better than I thought. I might watch it now.
Eat your heart out nostalgia critic! I mean really, it's so good to hear someone who done actual research talking about stuff rather than a clown who's more unfunny than Sandler at his worst!
Thinking about what you said on sitting on jokes for months with animation, I want to know what a day in the life of one of the poopy mouth deer scene animators was like.
Ok, you're telling me that there was going to be a Kingdom Hearts animated series made by the guy who did Eight Crazy Nights. Was accurate to the first game, and Square passed on it?! They must be smoking that strong to be very stupid with that decision.

31:25 LMAO
Merry Christmas Cecil! Thanks for all the videos!
Thanks! Merry Christmas to you too!
Another really fantastic job well done on another installment of ''Exploring'' 👍👍 Have a Merry Christmas Cecil😁😁😁😁
Awesome episode! Have a great holiday, Cecil!!!
I actually saw this in the theater and absolutely loved it. I even still have my ticket stub, because I'm one of those weirdos. 😆 My feelings have changed some over the years, but I don't hate it now or anything. I just don't really watch it anymore.
The feeling you get when you think back on the stupud things we did as a teenager, but enjoyed doing, so we just try not to think about it?
Firing 2D workers to gut union labor is believable.
I had a 1 year job at 7-11 where the owner fired someone every year so he wouldn’t have to pay the automatic 25c per hour raise.
I've seen that tactic so many times.
Its most likely the reason, I just couldn't say 100%
@@GoodBadFlicks I get that I appreciate you aren't a rumor channel you might mention a thing but if you don't have facts you'll outright state that and that's admirable.
It's probably for the best that that Rob Schneider film never came together. He's the kind of actor that's only funny in small snippets sharing the screen with an actor who's actually funny.
Oh my God Cecil, thank you so much for covering this film! I look forward to you covering more obscure and/or underrated gems in the future!
You are very welcome!
I wonder why Haley Joel Osment didn't reprise as Sora for the animatic while Rikku and Kairi's VAs did...
Great video Cecil thanks for another great year! Happy holidays!
Thanks! You too!
I actually never heard of this :-O thanks for doing another great Exploring video about it!
"Bum, biddy biddy biddy, Bum Bum Bum, Bum, Biddy Biddy, Bum"
Well, can’t say I ever predicted this. Time to have a new appreciation for this film.
It's free to watch on UA-cam right now
:)
Merry Christmas!
You have to marvel at the talent that was done to animate the dance scene.
Thanks! You too !
For my information, traditional animation ain't dead because there's been
great modern animated series from Disney like The Owl House, Big City Green, Star Vs. the Forces of
Evil, Gravity Falls, Hailey Does It!, Ducktales 2017 even Mickey Mouse Shorts.
Wonderful job as always
What an exploring. Grade A effort.
Thanks! Worked a long time on this one :)
Man it's so crazy to find out Seth Kearsley worked on The Maxx.
His first job out of school even!
That’s awesome, The MAXX is the absolute best thing ever.
agreed
You're my favorite UA-camr 😊
Yay! Thank you!
Mummy's alive is one of the best shows ever created
My dad and I went and saw this movie like 4 times in theaters. This movie seems to catch a lot of flack, but I'll always have a fondness for it.
Pete doctor also directed monster inc and inside out 1.
Bravo sir, another great video
Thanks!
I learned about this movie a few weeks ago when I scrolled through Tubi, I watched it right after your review. What an odd, vulgar and weird movie but for some reason it has it's heart in the right spot!✌️☺️
:)
Great video. Merry Christmas, and a Happy Hanukkah to all🕎🎄
Thanks and same to you!
I barely heard of this movie and I don't like Adam Sandler and the idea sounds dumb, but man this video was awesome and made the movie sound way better than I thought. I might watch it now.
I freaking love Eight Crazy Nights! It was cool to see the background of how the movie was made.
Thanks!
Wonderful
This is my all-time favorite holiday movie. Tippy top dog.
:)
As a big fan of the Maxx, this was a refreshing video for me.
Glad to hear it!
If only ‘Princesses and the Frog’ had been more praised at the time. We would still have 2d animated movies. 😔
And if only Disney didn't release a mediocre Winnie the Pooh movie against Harry Potter
There actually is two 2D films coming out soon. Genndy is trying to release his fixed movie. And the day the earth blew up is coming out in February
"...also, no bathrooms... they'd crank open the windows to..."
UH-OH!
"... get some air."
PHEW!
LOL I didn't even think of that and now I'm laughing
@@GoodBadFlicks
Hahaha, well, I'm more than happy to return the favor, dude!
After receiving so many great laughs from your narration over the years.
I'd love to see an episode on Celebrity Deathmatch if that's your bag
I wouldn't be against it.
Eat your heart out nostalgia critic! I mean really, it's so good to hear someone who done actual research talking about stuff rather than a clown who's more unfunny than Sandler at his worst!
8 Crazy Nights is an absolute gem! Criminally underrated, and beautifully made
:)
Thinking about what you said on sitting on jokes for months with animation, I want to know what a day in the life of one of the poopy mouth deer scene animators was like.
They wanted to cut those scenes but they got the biggest reaction from the test audiences.
Ok, you're telling me that there was going to be a Kingdom Hearts animated series made by the guy who did Eight Crazy Nights. Was accurate to the first game, and Square passed on it?!
They must be smoking that strong to be very stupid with that decision.
They really dropped the ball
@@GoodBadFlicks Yeah, they're just dumb as Disney nowadays.
Also, thank you for doing this retrospect on one of my favorite Adam Sandler films, Cecil. I hope you'll have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Thanks! Merry Christmas/Happy New Year to you too!
18:29-And that day foreth a rivet in animation began
for what it's worth, i actually enjoyed this film way back then... so many things i probably don't understand until now.
definitely a bit of an odd film for sure.
I would love to see an Exploring Iron Giant video one day.
That title hit me like a ton of bricks
“Rob Schneider, is a stapler!”
