New Sawmill Laser Mount Has Me Back in the Groove

- I"m feeling it today. Dust is settling in nicely on my clothes, smell of fresh sawn lumber in the air and the new laser mount on my portable sawmill is on point. I knew with some minor tweaking this laser would become a favourite sawmill add-on for me. It sure is handy looking down the log and seeing a laser line on both sides of the log showing me where the cut will be made. No more guessing with a tape measure makes me waste less and cut faster. With these portable sawmills efficiency is the name of the game. Mix in a razor-sharp blade and the boards are looking mighty-fine these days. Straight as an arrow and fast cutting. Before long I've got a good trailer load of lumber ready to head back to the pirate ship build. Be sure to check out the little tips and mentions I make in today's episode that I've learned throughout the years. Glad you're all here, here we go!

/ @sawingwithsandy Thanks for everyone's support. New products being added regularly. - Розваги
Seeing the blade track right along the laser line in some of those clips was extremely satisfying. Great video as always Sandy!
Thanks for that!
Your green lasers work so well, I suspect Woodland Mills will add them to their next product line. 💛
Wouldn't be a bad idea as an accessory I'd imagine
Those laser lights can let you see were the log supports are so you don't hit them also. Now back to the Pirate Ship. Thanks Sandy. It is raining here in Central Iowa today. Much needed.
Hey Gene! I sure find them handy
Love your videos Sandy. Thanks so much for all the effort you put into making them. Educational and entertaining! I’m building my new HM130Max as we speak and wouldn’t have ever tried with out the confidence you gave me to try! Keep ‘em coming!
way to go travis
Right on! Thanks for that Travis
Howdy Sandy/ always good to watch you run the mill. Something about watching a sawmill is captivating for me. It is such a blessing to be able to cut whatever you need. For my business, being able exit a particular size of timber has been so helpful and not having to wait until the bigger sawmill people have a chance to cut it for me. Take care and God bless
I can imagine cutting anything you need without wifi ring or paying for custom sawing keeps the customers happy
For something like the laser mount, the fewer moving parts you have the better off you are. Great job as always.
Thanks for the idea, i followed your link to "Apinex" and purchased a laser and mount from them. What a difference and time saver. Apinex are a great company to deal with, and i received my laser in less than 7 days from Canada to rural Queensland Australia. Thanks for your channel.
Great to hear you’re liking the laser and I appreciate you watching my channel
Thanks for clearing up why we haven’t seen you working on the pirate ship. Stay safe. Be well.
Thanks for watching!
That piece for keeping the log from rolling off the other side of the mill is a great idea. I'm learning a lot before I get my mill. Thanks for sharing Sandy
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching
I love listening to you explain why you do the things you do, mostly they makes sense to me.
thanks for that.I try to run down what I do and why just so others can see why I"m doing things
Wow another great video just love those lazer lights putting them on the doors was my first choice glad you went with that that's Y i just love your videos tks sandy
The loading log stops look good, I can see them becoming an accessory from woodlands.
Maybe I’ll get a royalty for the idea gaha
weld on a short piece of rebar (or drill and use a bolt) into your log stops so they don't fall out the bottom (it also acts has a figure grab) just be sure they stick out away from log
Thank you Sandy and can't wait to see the pirate ship when it is finished.
Thanks for that! I’m back working on it so will be back on the channel real soon
Awesome!!! Those lasers are so quick. Great job Sandy!!
For sure John. I’ve finally started getting it dialed in
Thanks for another great video Sandy.
Thanks for watching Arlyn
loving my hm130. first year runnin it. lots of these videos have helped me out. ty!
Great to hear that Mike!
I just ordered the same laser you have from an earlier video I watched that had the description of that same laser , hopefully I got the same less complicated mount that you were explaining at the beginning of this video. I sure enjoy your vids and the education you provide , new sawyer here with the hm122 with extensions , thanks
Excellent video work Sandy.
I appreciate that Tom!
That is an outstanding idea. Honestly, I don't think I've ever seen anybody else who does saw mill videos use a laser like that. Great tip!👍👍👍
Thanks for that! I try to think outside the box sometimes
That machine is fast !
a brilliant idea to mount the camera on the saw . it gives a really clear view of the saw in action . 👍
Glad you’re liking the camera angles. Great to have ya along
Great video Sandy. Looking forward to the pirate ship video. Gonna be awesome when it's done.
Thanks for that! I’m looking forward to seeing all complete
As always Sandy, nice Video thanks.
Appreciate that TJ
good stuff. thanks for sharing
Happy to have ya along
Getting a laser-assisted visual picture of the cut and not just measurements helps with the end product, reduces waste and speeds up the placement for the optimum cut.
For sure. I like it just to verify where the blade is going to cut
Hi Sandy! Seeing how the lasers perform on your rig, I would consider them essential. I enjoy watching the process. Now I want one for myself!
It is a great add on for sure. I"m really happy too ave it
Thanks. Another great video! Im tempted to try the laser...
Glad you enjoyed the video!
I've been having the exact same issues with the exact same mount. Just the slightest deviation messes the whole thing up. I'm glad I ordered the other mount when I got the laser initially. I should be fitting it this week sometime. Thanks for the video!
Hey CK! Great to hear from ya
good morning Sandy i can see more now even on my old saw mill that a laser could be useful even if don't cut much lately still waiting to finish healing from my pneumonia that wood should bring you closer to the end of the pirate ship { joke with winter coming you will have to built a dry dock to keep your boat out of the ice ha ha ha hope it made you smile }
Hahah dry dock! I’m glad to hear you’re healing up and hope you’re back to sawing before long
I really like the green laser it shows up very well. And seems your mill is tuned in very well cutting those small logs was fast and produced very good lumber. You make me wish I had access to a lot of pine logs but I just don't. Great video Sandy
Some days o wish I had hardwood but then again the softwood makes for good cutting and structural lumber. Glad you liked the video. Laser worked great for sure
good video and good job laser remount is much better. take care, be safe and well.
Thanks for that John! Sure is an upgrade I think
On the money Sandy, Sweet vid.
Thanks Sydney!
i like the laser been looking for one for my 122 that saves a lot of time
I'm finding it's great so far
Thanks
Hope you’re well Jim!
Sorry I'm late Sandy. I'm getting behind on Video watching. I have over 100 that I am Subscribed to LOL
I just had a brilliant thought.. Use the Original Hillbilly Hideout II for the sawn lumber.
Close in the old wood deck for Tool storage and you can move the Saw Sharpening out there. Yes/No ?
Thanks Much..
Mike M.
You've got some great ideas there! No problem about the delay. Always happy to have ya along for the adventures.
I have a idea for the bridge from log deck to mill. Trim a 45° angel bottom corner of the 4X4 on the deck side. Bore a hinge pivot hole through the 6X6 and 4X4 slightly below center of 4X4. Trim the back of the pocket so the 4X4 can lean back.
That will work real well!
Hey Sandy. Thanks for the work you put into your videos. We tried the setup with both brackets you have suggested and are really unhappy with both. Cheap aluminum failure rate and ability to move is just to high. Have you found any better options for something that is really sturdy and solid? If so we would love to know as we are struggling with using this setup.
Hi Laura, I’m sorry to hear the setup isn’t working out as you’d hoped. Im still using this same setup on my sawmill. I’ve got two lasers on the sawmill wired up to the sawmill battery
Hey Sandy, those posts on your sawmill shed look home made. If so, what did you use to treat them against termites and decay?
Hi Will. Those posts are 6x6 red pine. I don’t have any of the wood here treated with anything unless it’s right close to the ground and in that case I used a green wood preservative from the hardware store
i was thinking of getting a
Logosol sawmill for my property in Sweden but freaked out at the price . their cheapest model is 11,000 Euros !
your machine is a steal and actually looks more robust than the Swedish one .
Yeah can imagine 11000 euros will make anyone think twice
May install a bump guard similar to recessed tail light or clearance light on back of trucks
That could work!
Your sawmill setup is bass-ackwards from mind. I prefer swing bars on my log deck, easier to adjust log to land on sawmill bunks and other uses..... I'm saving your laser videos because looks like good idea that I might try, only issue I have is, my mill blade cover is plastic so I'll have to figure a work-around, if I can........ Just one question, your links show 4 light options, which one did you buy?
8:44... I love watching milling videos, but sometimes, you just want to know how to do a thing. It's around 8:44 that the lasor shows up
Sandy, Another good video! I have learned quite a lot from your videos. I have a question, which model and mW laser do you have?
Hi Harry, great to have ya along for the video. I run the Apinex 50mW laser. I've got links and details to them in the description of this video: ua-cam.com/video/C8O3iQw7Xik/v-deo.html
Hope the helps,
Pro tip .
Always throw your slabs on the ground somewhere, that way you get to pick them up a second time .

Ya
I kinda figured with that nice new shiny ✨️ black grabber you have .
Great vid. All the best from Wales in the UK. How much did the laser cost Sir, can you fit it to the HM122 do you think?
Hey Richard! I can’t remember the cost but it would for sure work with the 122 but you’d need battery pack
You are solely responsible for me just buying an HM130max after I acquired 20 acres of mostly hardwoods. I want to build a solar kiln to dry my own lumber for some cabin projects on site, but now I have to figure out the cheapest and fastest way to get dry lumber to build the kiln, so I can dry more lumber. Irony.
Glad to hear you're liking the videos! I appreciate the support from you on my channel. Good luck with the solar kiln build
MM77 Approved 👍🏼👍🏼
I want One of those lazers
Sure are handy
Time saver i think and stops a lot of walking measuring
Iam 69 live in northen alberta i need to make things as easy as posible
That looks like an amazon laser and mount.
It’s from a company called Apinex
Sandy mount a guard over the laser to protect from bumps. Thanks for sharing. Arrr
That’s a good idea! Thank you
Good day Sandy. I just noticed that you changed up the model of laser you were using from previous is this due to the better temperature variance in the TZ16X70-520L? I am in Central / Northern Alberta so something that can handle a wider temp variation is going to be key to me looking into purchasing this system. Also big fan thanks for all the tips you put out there from your experiences, makes life so much easier for myself as a new sawmill owner.
Hey Clint! I believe this is the same model laser but I’d have to double check. This one is supposed to have a wide temperature range it works in which will be good for later in the fall
I appreciate your support on the channel. Great to hear from ya
Hi Sandy, is the 50mw ok for outdoor use? Is the line visible even in the sun?
Hi Serge. I’ve only used the laser under the shed roof but others may be able to comment on that
Sandy could you give me specific part numbers for the green laser and for the mount?
Thanks Bob in Minnesota

What’s the laser and laser mount called looking to get one for my woodland hm 130 maxx woodlander
Technically the saw base and mount is fixer and level so the level is Mounted square with the base you only need to adjust where the level line make contact with log
Yeah it is restively square but I find the sawmill door isn’t perfectly perpendicular to the track so needs a little tweaking from time to time
I notice that your mill really puts out the saw dust. My HM130 max does not. It kind of puts a cloud of find saw dust up around the mill. I am going to look at the guards a little closer, but they seem tight.
I wonder if it’s the type of tree. Are you milling red pine and balsam fir?
@@sawingwithsandy lol I have no idea what type of trees they are. I just know I am making lumber to build a barn. I will have to learn sometime. I will try to pay more attention .
Hey Sandy, just found your channel! Wish I had a long time ago as I have a much older Woodland Mills. I'm loving the laser idea, I think I'd use it more on the upright side (after losing a few blades that way..🙄) plus after the initial cut I put the cut side against the uprights to square it off....the laser on that side to me would be more helpful....thoughts or experiences?
Great to have ya here on the channel and welcome! I like the laser on the log stop side as well but I do find myself looking moreso at the side on the throttle side to see where the blade is entering the cut
@@sawingwithsandy Ok Sandy, thanks for the reply and for your honest opinion! So just to be clear, the new laser has the 16mm diameter, and you've gone back to the original mount then, but the 16mm version. And switched from AAA power supply to the 12v and converter? I've watched I think all the pertinent videos and that seems to be where you've arrived?
@earlzathome that's right. Just changed the mount to the one that isn't as adjustable as I find it doesn't come loose like the really adjustable one. I did goto the 12v power for the laser with the converted just to avoid having to replace batteries
@@sawingwithsandy Sweet! Thanks for the info and the reply! Have a great Christmas and happy sawdust making in the New Year!
Which laser do you have? The description shows 4 models:
5 mw
10 mw
30mw
50 mw
I’m guessing the 30 or 50 but would like it to show up well like yours. Rather not buy the 50 if the 30mw works good
Hi Daryl I have the 50mw
@@sawingwithsandy ok,
thank you Sandy
How can a person get in direct contact with you? If it is somewhere in your description I must have missed it. Going to make the last major plan for my retirement and your channel has inspired me to finally buy a mill. I am a retired logger and log home builder and can’t seem to get the sawdust out of my brain. Thanks 🙏
Hey Paul. Feel free to email me sawingwithsandy@gmail.com
How do you power the lasers? I had one and I think I burnt it out using a small 6 vdc battery 😢
Hi Robin, I hooked my power source to my 12v starter battery but first to a converter unit. Here's the setup and install in this video ua-cam.com/video/ASdQCRhqwG4/v-deo.html
@@sawingwithsandy thanks, I’m going to give them a call .
I watch all your videos. I have wm 126. Love it
Great to hear that Robin. Happy to have good folks like yourself along each week
May I ask, where you got the mount, you are using now please?
Sure! I just added the new mount to the description of this video just in case you’re interested
Where did you get the laser and mount
Hey Dwight thanks for watching. I’ve got some links in the video description for where I got the laser
Hey Sandy, How'd ya hook the 3V lasers to your 12V battery?
Hi Andrew I’ve got a converter that I got from Apinex to make that step
Don’t need a hinge just a pin through 3 lined up holes
Think you’re right
Laser works great. I had an issue with my log stops when I relocated my mill so I flipped the bunks around, the log clamp as well.
Right on! That would solve things for sure
4 'eyes' are better than 2, right ?
Sandy what mount are you using?
Hey Patrick. There should be a link in the description of this video to the mount setup I’ve got. Hope it helps
Please put a link to the new mount Sandy... Thanks.
Thanks Lorne. I’ll update that
I lost you when you rebuilt your log saw shelter can you please send the link to that please
And why don’t you use the old sawmill shelter as the storage place for your lumber
Hi John! Here's the link to my sawmill shelter build ua-cam.com/play/PLlIqRYdFUXsWIFO0VDfwDvjcr7rIMOXjy.html
I plan on using the old shed for lumber storage once I start stock piling lumber again. Recently I"ve been using the lumber as fast as I can mill it but that will likely change come winter
Wow, your timber is really short now and then you trimmed it even shorter.
It’s right at 10’
Please share your thoughts on 1.5 inch blade vs 1.25 blade when you have enough hands on to see a difference, all things considered. Please let me share this - God Willing, may you, at some point in your life, look back at your sawmill "pioneering" days and marvel and smile to yourself as you see the simple advances that enable the small sawmill to efficiently produce the maximum board feet per cord of logs by sawing logs with a "crook" into straight 2+ foot, 4+ foot and 8+ foot pieces etc, then milling these with a mill that has manual log end dogging and rotating and a 2 blade edger unit mounted with the band saw that cuts board edges just in advance of the band blade. To be loaded right off the mill on to a small dry kiln "charge carriage" and stickered with sticker "mats" and "weighted" with cable tension to load into a movable dry kiln module.. All to be used to fabricate components for building housing specifically designed to fully utilize the output of the mill setup. Yes, with 3 lasers, one each for the edger blades and one as you are working out here. Thank You, James
Hey James. My old sawmill and this new hm130max have used the same 1.25" blade so unfortunately I"m not able to talk on what I notice the difference to be with the 1.5"
@@sawingwithsandy I had it in my mind that your new mill used the 1.5 inch but now remember it was longer not wider. Thanks. I keep open as to any new data on optimal band wheel diameter to reduce blade bending stress for longer blade life and practical 1.25 vs 1.5 width blade realities.
Wish I saw this before I bought that same stupid mount. Terrible.
i have those worms in my firewood 🤮
Haha I hear ya there
