I came to Weston in June 2018 for 2 nights, I rented a sea view flat and I loved the town 🙂 has it gone downhill this much since then? Such a shame to see it in such a state 😩
I think right around that time Weston really began to go downhill. I think the local council are struggling financially. Thanks for watching & the comment!
Hey Joe, Haven't been to Weston since 2008. The CCC campsite we stayed on is no more!! I remember a lot of re-development with mew paving being laid on the prom at the time, we sat and ate fish & chips on the sea-front. Fond memory, probably never to be repeated.
Another great video Joe 👍🏼 It’s sad to see these seaside towns left to crumble but it seems more & more people are getting on a plane now and not the M5
Totally agree and frankly I don't blame them when you actually price up a British seaside holiday it's far from cheap! Thanks for watching & the comment!
I’m from and live in Weston. It’s sad to see the impact the lack of funding and tourism has had on the town. Away from the town centre and ends of the sea front it’s not too bad. There are areas that are relatively affluent. Most of us with money just hop on the train to Bristol when we want to go shopping or out for drinks/ food etc.
Without Tourism Weston would be dead along time ago in my opinion... It's the only thing keeping Weston and the majority of the seasonal businesses afloat. Without Tourism Weston is done for! Thanks for watching, would be good to get an interview with you on my return in the summer? Get me on Instagram if you have it bud.
Hey mate! Thanks so much for the kind words I genuinely appreciate them! Got some really exciting adventures and colabs coming! See you on the next one!
Came from Backpacker Ben's video on Weston. He didn't show the high street, which looks fairly decent. Glad you showed it, but on the whole, Weston looks pretty grim!
Hey bud, that's awesome thanks for heading over! Yes it's pretty grim but honestly there's some great hard working people in Weston that's the positive! Thanks again for watching!
Will be doing another video in Summer as a comparison, hopefully geared around seasonal towns and the difficulties of living in one regards employment etc.
@@JoefishJ You're right it's peeling, but it's symptomatic of the whole country. As a place to live, up here on the Hillside at least, it's pretty good.
@@JoefishJ Yes, Somerset is lovely without being too remote. I mean Devon of course, but it's a bit out of the way. Weston has become a commuter town to Bristol and dare I say it, maybe even London. It does need a scrub up in parts. It's a shame all that money was wasted on that stupid oil platform thing to "celebrate Brexit", could've been spent cleaning up the town.
I was born in Weston-super-Mare general hospital in April 1962, when it would have probably been in it's prime. A few months later, our family moved to South Wales because my dad was from there. I've visited Weston several times but not for the past 20 years. It seems to have gone downhill in that time. However, I have lived in Blackpool 3 times in the past 20 years (though I don't live there now) and much of it is also a slum. It seems the grand old days of British seaside resorts have lost their former glory. I don't know what my mum would make of this video if she was still alive because she was from Weston and was of the opinion that it was a premier seaside resort, a jewel in the crown, so to speak - a place to be proud to be from.
I think that if you visit a seaside town in February, you will always see it at its worst. Commerce revolve around seasons and this is the quietest of all. GO back in Mid August and I would be interested to see what the differences are.
Hi, thanks for watching & the comment! Yes definitely agree, I do state how busy it is in the summer. I think what shocked us was the state of disrepair and rubbish everywhere. It was a shock. Will be doing another video in summer as comparison, hopefully geared around the difficulties of living in a seasonal town.
Great video. I came from Ben’s channel. I would never imagine this. I haven’t been there but I can’t believe what I saw. Abandon building let to rot. People are very friendly
I holidayed as a child in WSM, and on holiday in uk in 2014 visited since I left uk to live in Perth, Western Australia It is sad to see the decline 😢 Great vlog 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Hey mate! Thanks for the kind words and for heading over 🙏 it's a shame what's happening hopefully video's like that will shine a light on it and something can be done! See you on the next one!
Its grim up North too, in some areas more than others. Seaside towns and smaller towns, once industrious, ecspecially. Sparks of hope, here and there. Its all about investment and rejuvenation. Such a waste of potential and abandonment of infrastructure and people. A cost of living and housing crisis that is further wearing people down. Enjoyed your informative vid & the positive energy and empathy. I would go on holidays to the West Country when I was a kid. Mostly Cornwall, around St Ives & the Lizard Peninsula. I thought it was magical, and spent a mad amount of time rummaging in rock pools.👍

Hi Joe. Terrific channel. New sub here. I also came here from BackPacker Ben's channel. It would be great if you & Ben did some more travels together. You make a smashing team.
Used to go to Weston when I was younger, many ( many ) moons ago. It was a really busy, summer spot. It's such a shame that so many of our beautiful seaside towns have been neglected. Almost just left to die. My nan used to call it Weston -Super-Mud because the tide goes out so far !! Another great video, sir.
Hi Dawn, glad you enjoyed the video! Yes it's a real shame, I grew up in Weston and was hoping to dispell the reputation but it wasn't great. Going to do another in the summer when the holiday makers are down. Thanks again for watching and the comment! See you on the next one!!
Such a shame. It’s really gone downhill, I remember working in the sovereign centres 2000-2010 and it was absolutely thriving up until 2008. Can remember queues to the back of the shop at Christmas times. Looks so bleak now, where is our council tax going?
when you looked at the 'promenade' was there a reason why you focussed on the delapidated birnbeck pier [which has been in ruins for 30+ years] rather than the main one mile stretch of prom which was refurbished at some considerable cost only around 10 years ago??
Weston-super-Mare resident here. Just for balance, there is a lot of wonderful architecture, music, art, culture and pretty spaces in town. Most of this video focuses on an area out of the town center and not off the main promenade at all. Weston has its issues, but like all places, look down and you'll find the gutter.
I grew up in Weston ,moved there in 1074 ,growing up in the 80's Weston was a very full popular hotspot, the high street had the coolest shops and so did the backstreets, nightlife was mayhem and drunken violence but still it was a great place ,Now not so much, cheers for the vid dude.
No problem!! There's some fantastic old documentaries on UA-cam about Weston from the 70's, 80's & 90's. Type in Weston-super-Mare and just have a scroll. Thanks for watching
Nice one Joe, first time seeing wsm in near on 10 year looks the same but more places closed.... Time has stood still. Would be interesting to investigate the migrant hotels around weston. Savoy was full and pontins down brean fully booked up for 3 years. They say "workers for hinkley" lol
Mate... Over the last 10years it's gone downhill so quickly!! Will give you a message later regarding some content in Tenerife. Thanks for the support Amigo!!
Good video, Joe. It really feels there is no going back for Weston, and it will continue to sink into a pit of depravity. As the old saying goes, "you can't polish a turd".
@JoeFish just viewed your video with @BackpackerBen. I’m an American with English Saxon heritage. I have travelled England extensively to the main tourist destinations but want to know where you as a Brit would go for a true English experience? My wife and I plan on visiting next year and would like your suggestions. I plan on binging your videos in the near future.
Hi Chuck, thanks for the comment and for heading over to the channel. I would certainly say Newquay or St Ives (Cornwall) for the beaches, Somerset for the historical towns and typical English landscapes, Lyme Regis is a wonderful traditional seaside resort that's still thriving. I've got loads of adventures incoming so hopefully give you some inspiration. Feel free to email or message me on Instagram, link in my page description.
@JoefishJ Thanks for the suggestions! Plenty of places for me to research. My wife and I enjoy the small market towns such as Ludlow and Alnwick. My interest is Saxon history which is my heritage. I have also watched and enjoyed your videos featuring such smaller towns, churches and hotels. England has so much to offer besides London. Thanks for the generous offer of your thoughts, recommendations and advice. Chuck
Looks like a good place for livestreamers to do as well because all these places are different from month to month, especially during the tourist season. thank you for a good video.
Not sure about now, but there used to be a huge number of rehabs in and around Weston and, for that reason, lots and lots of ex drug users and alcoholics would stay there after their time in treatment. This was about 20 years ago, so I don't know if it's still the case.
Thanks for this interesting video, my perspective on Weston is this, I've been travelling down from the West Midlands since the 70s and I have noticed the decline, car parking charges are high, charging £1 per person to walk down the pier that was free originally is another thing, the quality of some of the sea front traders leaves alot to be desired, over priced poor quality chips and traders trying to short change you has been my experiences, people also don't have the money to spend even on days out with the cost of living crisis, the younger generation prefer to look at their phones all day long than come to the seaside, the older generation who supported places like Weston have gone, myself I'll be honest and say I prefer to holiday in Weymouth nowadays, it seems to have survived and is busy every summer.
I live in a coastal village. Air B&B, tourists and second home buyers have destroyed our community, and so quickly too. The people who live and work here have been priced out meaning loads business' have closed. This leaves second home owners and air b&b owners to complain that they/their guests have no amenities, they therefore resell, no one local can afford it and no one else wants it because it's in the village that they helped to bleed dry. Well we locals have had to leave because we couldn't afford to feed our families because you wanted a spare house. Of course there are other factors but greed is the main one.
I think the paddle steamer day trips were always from Penarth pier They still do them. Saw one leaving Penarth the other day absolutely packed with people going to spend about 8 hours there
Really good channel. I watched a video yesterday about Bristol where i live now! I moved from London, im Irish and i have thought about moving to Weston from Bristol. I think the places should be offered to people who will take them on and do them up..
Thanks for the kind words 🙏 I'll be heading over to Ireland soon, any suggestions send over on Instagram. Thanks for watching and the comment. See you on the next one 🙏
Ben I been watching all your U.K.series.I request you sir please upload any old photo of the same building fifty or 100 years back so we can see the massive change happened in town.Love from India
At @3:45 we can't tell from that shot that they are abandoned...they are still beautiful buildings...ok you do go up there later; hope you touch on the aging and dwindling population, that has to play a part. Sadly your video may hurt the town more, as folks will google (what I did) and your video comes up! Maybe it's because IT'S OFF SEASON? I imagine every town that is tourist driven/summer seaside, is pretty dull and even shops closed as it's not high season...
saw this on my recommended and i live in weston super mare! thats only the town which has most definitely gotten worse but is the best part of this town. i live just outside the town and it is very deprived, the amount of crime and drugs you hear about is shocking. i recommend to see the true characters of weston, go to the bournville or oldmixon, its bad
Hey mate, thanks for the comment and for watching! I grew up in Weston and know good people on the Bournville & Oldmixon so didn't want to upset anyone featuring it! Give it a share to some Locals for me pal! Cheers
Went to South-End on Sea yesterday. As a legal immigrant and British that left another country due to it's crime what i don't get is the following. The country i left, a crime cesspool is poorer, but the upkeep of infrastructure is MUCH better than the rich UK. The decline is everywhere in small things, from road markings, general upkeep, the question I'm trying to answer is, where is the money going!??? Why are countries that are poorer than the UK in a better state!?? And nothing to do with Brexit. It was the only thing that tried to get your sovereignty back watered down by 'open borders'. Illegals get more help than British citizens. Unacceptable! The nefarious globalist norm everywhere that people should reject.
All seaside towns have suffered since the glory days before people went abroad on holiday. Weston is no worse than other places and I'd say it's far from being the worst seaside town - look at Blackpool for instance. Think you laid it on a bit thick with all the " look at the empty buildings and disrepair" Weston isn't any worse than anywhere else in that department and is still very busy and has plenty to offer the holiday makers and the locals of course.
Hey Joe my names Steve I'm from weston super mare too I was born and bred here and I believe I heard u say to that young guy with the beard who was stood with the drinkers in the Italian gardens that u said u new him from school that school wouldn't have been wyvern by any chance would it? As that's where I went and I also remember that guy so did u go to wyvern as well joe? Also the town used to be buzzing pre 2012 because we used to have an annual beach festival called T4 on the beach live on channel 4 T.V which in sure u remember T4 used to bring so much attention positivity money and atmosphere to the town and 2012 was T4 on the beaches last year and after this weston has never been the same since in my opinion 👍

My mum and bro live near Weston. It's not as bad a you are painting here. Good for a day out and certainly with a bit of investment easy to turn round. In the summer it's rammed
As a trained RNLI beach life guard I can tell you they struggle to pay wages bro... It's a civilian funded charity, either way I hope something happens! Any opinions of next filming spots mate?
@@JoefishJ RNLI is the best funded charity in the UK, they have the money. There will be a pot. Do Weston's parks and gardens, the restoration of the flower clock (look that one up, it's quite funny), seafront and Grand Pier at peak grockle, do it in the genre of Magnum photographer, Martin Parr. Weston Woods and Sand Bay (some lovely new builds down there). I usually live in rough rural Thailand or on land regen projects in a Bunkabin in the UK. Lived in Western domesticated civilisation in Weston for a few years now and it's bliss in comparison.
Weston walls is an art project spin off from bristols upfest. Once a year chosen artists come and paint. The old cinema had just been taken over by a company that specializes in retro films etc. Now an annual event. For someone who grew up here you could have found bits to make it look better but apparently you wanted to make the place look worse. I think you make good videos though so keep up the good work but maybe promote the good things more. Ps Backpacker Ben said more positive things in 3 sentences on this video than in his whole vlog.
See how you worded that "bits to make it Look better" mate.... Papering over the cracks and pretending the town isn't falling apart isn't going to help. Have you seen the Prime Minister has brought up in the house of commons the Bald and Bankrupt video that I'm in where I show him around town... Showing the REAL side has made a difference.
Joe other than a few crumbling buildings and a couple empty shops what exactly is so bad compared with anywhere else in the UK? I've travelled and chose to move here when I could have gone anywhere. It's a lovely place to live. Some amazing properties too if you can afford them. Even with all the rehab centres you will find more junkies in any big city and homelessness is a worldwide issue not just Weston-super-Mare. Cmon fella you know the angle you filmed this with. If you think a bald and bankrupt video is gonna make the government listen you're mistaken. Anyway keep up the vids you have more knowledge and better personality than those other 2 and hopefully your sub count grows quickly! ❤WSM
Yes the place does look bad, but in the summer it is so much better. There is a lot of investment going on at the moment and even Birmbeck is finally getting some love.
WE LIVE IN BURNHAM-ON-SEA WHICH IS JUST UP THE COAST, AND THAT IS AN EVEN BIGGER SH*T-HOLE, THAN WESTON!!! WESTON IS BAD BUT NOT THAT BAD! WE REGULARLY COME HERE FOR A NICE MEAL, WALK THE DOGS, GET SOME LOVELY HAND-MADE CHOCOLATES AT CHRISTOPHERS, WAITROSE, M&S, ETC! I AM ONLY A WAREHOUSE WORKER, BUT ALSO A "TRUTHER" , AND KNOW WHO IS ACTUALLY BEHIND THE WORLDWIDE DESTRUCTION OF COUNTRIES, CULTURES, ETC! I HELP PEOPLE ON THE STREETS WITH FOOD, GAS, MONEY, ETC, INCLUDING WELLS, BATH, TAUNTON, ETC!!!
Hey thanks for the comment! Have you seen my video on Burnham? Check it out on my channel, Weston is on another stratosphere as opposed to Burnham, the underbelly of Weston is nasty. I went soft on Weston if I'm honest due to having grown up in the town. I hope you enjoy the content, it's not all about bad places! Cheers
Burnham is - mostly - okay. Sadly there are some problems - there's a group of teenagers going around shooting birds and the ducks with a catapult and giving animals a kicking. Nasty evil little shxts. But, Burnham is still a place I don't want all the tourists to know about because it's a nice place to spend half a day. It's fairly quiet, parking is cheap, and it's just generally pleasant.
Thanks again mate! Top man. See you soon

Get me on Instagram if you have it bud.
came here from BPB i'll sub you mate and hopefully more will follow and we'll see a new star born. keep it up and keep it fresh.
Other UK coastal resorts still tickng along ok so something else weird at play here
Hey thanks for watching & the comment! It's really weird the last 10yrs have been tough on Weston-Super-Mare!
It's a great place to live.
You've come in January. It's grim. Come in the summer and it's buzzing with life.
Totally agree! I would say Somerset is probably the best county due to transport links, beauty and lifestyle? Thoughts?
@@JoefishJ Yes, Somerset is lovely without being too remote. I mean Devon of course, but it's a bit out of the way.
Weston has become a commuter town to Bristol and dare I say it, maybe even London.
It does need a scrub up in parts. It's a shame all that money was wasted on that stupid oil platform thing to "celebrate Brexit", could've been spent cleaning up the town.
I live in Weston and it’s not that bad.
I discovered you via Ben. Great vid!
Hey mate! Thanks for the kind words! Welcome aboard, plenty more adventures upcoming so keep an eye out! Thanks again
Thanks for watching & the comment! Likewise I wonder what the people of yesteryear could see the town now. A real shame! Thanks for watching
Love your videos mate. My Wife introduced me to your channel and I subscribed straight away ❤️!
Awesome thanks for the kind words! Hope you enjoy the content
Hey 👋 thanks for heading over to my channel. I think the state of some of the towns within the UK surprises people! See you on the next one!
Gangstalking goes on here!
I holidayed as a child in WSM, and on holiday in uk in 2014 visited since I left uk to live in Perth, Western Australia
It is sad to see the decline 😢
Great vlog 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thanks for watching 🙏 hope you enjoy the rest of the content
Gangstalking!
Came from Ben's channel, awesome video, also subbed 😀
Awesome 👍 welcome aboard! Hope you enjoy the channel & the upcoming adventures amigo!
Actually.... a really enjoyable and informative watch👍
Thanks for the kind words 🙏 glad you enjoyed it! Loads more adventures incoming, I'll see you on the next one!
Hi mate came from Ben’s channel love the content cheers mate
Hi mate, that's awesome! Ben's a top fella! Got some exciting adventures incoming. See you on the next one!!
Great video, showed an honest account. You and Backpacker Ben should do more together!
Thanks very much! Just trying to handle things respectfully!
Yes definitely Ben's a top guy!
Also from Ben! :) Looking forward to follow you on your adventures.
Hey 👋 welcome! Hope you enjoy the content and upcoming adventures! Thanks for the sub
The cinema has just been re- opened by merlin cinemas, it has a Compton organ one of only 4 in the county.
That's good to know! Hopefully they freshen it up a bit so people know it's open... Shocked to see the state of it. Thanks for watching & the comment!
Nice video Joe! interesting town..come visit Liverpool i'd love to see you there
Hey mate! Thanks for watching & the comment! Yes I'm planning a northern tour very soon, so keep your eyes peeled for that in the future! Thanks for the support Amigo 👍
Went last Monday there, superb place, I really liked it
Just watched bens video on Weston. Such a shame to see the town rot away like that. Both top lads and great content from you both
Hey mate! Thanks for the kind words and for heading over 🙏 it's a shame what's happening hopefully video's like that will shine a light on it and something can be done! See you on the next one!
My thoughts are: I never visited the place and now I know I never will!😹 🙋
Yes don't bother! Thanks for watching and the comment
Hey 👋 thanks for watching & the kind words! I love Cornwall also, there's a few videos on my channel about Cornwall! I hope you enjoy them, I totally agree it's a sad site to see the decline of these towns! I hope you enjoy the upcoming adventures!
@@JoefishJ I will check those out, and looking forward to the new ones. 👍
9:09 🤣 the Carrot - almost as awe-inspiring as London’s Shard, I mean Shart.
😂👊👍
Joe you make history interesting. Best wishes from Outback South Australia. 🇦🇺
That's a huge compliment thank you, that's genuinely my aim with these videos. Make the past interesting and people will be more inclined to care about the future! Thanks for watching and the kind words
No worries.
@user-zz2yl3hb6b The Backpacker Ben vlog showed a grim picture of the place.
I remember skating the concrete benches on marine lake, always losing my board in the water haha
Hi Joe. Terrific channel. New sub here. I also came here from BackPacker Ben's channel. It would be great if you & Ben did some more travels together. You make a smashing team.
Hey 👋 thanks for heading over! Ben's a top guy, got some adventures together upcoming! Thanks again 👍
Wow Weston does like dire, just discovered your channel good stuff! subbed
👋 thanks for watching & heading over to my channel! Yes my thoughts exactly! Hope you enjoy the upcoming adventures.
I live in Weston, if you go there on a hot summers day it will be extremely busy, very nice down the sea front.
Such a shame. It’s really gone downhill, I remember working in the sovereign centres 2000-2010 and it was absolutely thriving up until 2008. Can remember queues to the back of the shop at Christmas times. Looks so bleak now, where is our council tax going?
Hey Clo, yes I remember those days "All sports" & "Gile Sports" etc, thanks so much for watching and the support from you guys!! ❣️
when you looked at the 'promenade' was there a reason why you focussed on the delapidated birnbeck pier [which has been in ruins for 30+ years] rather than the main one mile stretch of prom which was refurbished at some considerable cost only around 10 years ago??
Look up gangstalking! It goes on here!! Evil people here
Weston-super-Mare resident here.
Great video
Thanks for the kind words! See you on the next one.
Your lovely looking eyes, Joe,.were just about the only nice thing to look at in this video of Western ,not "super" ,as such, rundown mare!😅
Very kind of you thank you. Hope you enjoy the content and upcoming adventures
People seem nice. just so sad knowing our homeless are never cared for breaks my heart
Good video, Joe. It really feels there is no going back for Weston, and it will continue to sink into a pit of depravity. As the old saying goes, "you can't polish a turd".
I think that saying sums Weston up nicely... Thanks for watching & the comment mate!
@JoeFish just viewed your video with @BackpackerBen. I’m an American with English Saxon heritage. I have travelled England extensively to the main tourist destinations but want to know where you as a Brit would go for a true English experience? My wife and I plan on visiting next year and would like your suggestions. I plan on binging your videos in
the near future.
@JoefishJ
Thanks for the suggestions!
Holy Grail is the 70's, cinema Improved,,Beatles played there and were filmed in WSM; just before they were famous............
Great video, you might want to look into the new DJI Pocket 3, might help with the skaky footage.
Thanks for watching & the comment! I've just got a new Canon that I'm getting to grips with! Thanks for the support!
As a kid I loved taking the ferry from Cardiff Pier Head to Weston Super Mare. A great day out.
I think the paddle steamer day trips were always from Penarth pier They still do them. Saw one leaving Penarth the other day absolutely packed with people going to spend about 8 hours there
Buildings so close to the open sea which are not inhabited all the time will rot in a pretty short time!
Happens alot here! Thanks for watching and the comment
New sub here 😎, watching you from Johannesburg, South Africa ✌
Welcome aboard mate! Thanks for watching & the comment! Always wanted to visit SA one day! Catch you on the next one!
@@JoefishJ oh wow! I will , look forward to that xx

Gangstalking goes on here! Evil troll town...
I went there in 1981, it has really changed for the worse and it is sad.
Hi, it certainly has. In preparation for this video I watched hours of old film about the town that I found fascinating!
Came from Backpacks Ben❤
Greetings to you! Thanks for heading over to my channel!
Great video. I've seen a lot worse than Weston-Super-Mare around the world...
I agree..! But for the UK, it's bad. Thanks for watching & the comment.
Not the people ! Look up gangstalking
I have a buy to let near Weston Super Mare. That’s bad enough the street is no less than a shit hole
Not been since carnival 2 years ago great cafe called treats in a side street .

Had a couple of holidays here back in the 1980s, it was great.
My mum and bro live near Weston. It's not as bad a you are painting here. Good for a day out and certainly with a bit of investment easy to turn round. In the summer it's rammed
Birnbeck Pier is about to undergo reconstruction by the RNLI.
Hey mate, Weston Council have now took ownership...They also own the Tropicana, they didn't do much for the Tropicana so I'm not holding out hope.
@@JoefishJ Compulsory Purchase order by the Council but the RNLI are taking possession and doing the rebuild. They have the money.
Should go to these resorts at summer time when it's nice, of course it looks shyte in off season
Some are shyte all year round but Weston I will be returning in the summer. Thanks for the comment
❤WSM
Thanks for your visit, don't bother coming back.
Hi Joe, the Carrot would have made a Great Phone Mast?
I take it you don't know Wales is in the UK then? Rhyl says hi! xD
It's on my to-do list! Give me a message on Instagram if you fancy giving me a tour - @joefish.surf
Lots of potential there in my opinion. Hopefully it will improve.
Totally agree! Just needs that investment from the local authorities and some care! Thanks for watching & the comment!
It's not the ocean It's the Bristol channel, the beaches are In fact mud flats, a lovely place.
This is my hometown. It's always sad to see the state of it when I visit.
Yes the place does look bad, but in the summer it is so much better. There is a lot of investment going on at the moment and even Birmbeck is finally getting some love.
I was there two years ago and had a great day !
I lived in Worle, for two years. The longest two years of my life

There are many areas in Weston that you have not visited
I love in porttishad it on the same cost line as weston
It's full of rehab centres
More than anywhere else in the UK. Sad state of affairs! Thanks for watching and the comment
