Years ago i watched a video of a lady who by herself roams around the train stations in Barcelona with a whistle, looking for pickpockets and thiefs. She said the police were apathetic to the victims and had enough of them and just started doing this one day. She doesn't have any backing from the police and pretty sure risks her life daily.

We got robbed yesterday around 23.00 when walking back to the hotel around Gothic Quarter. Family of 4 - my husband and our 12 year old were in front, myself and 15 year old step behind them. Busy road, lots of tourists. Suddenly two men walked quickly between my husband and daughter from the back and grounded him. They appeared out of nowhere- it lasted split seconds. I don't know how many of them were behind me but someone must have pulled my bag as I fell hard to the ground. I started shouting, my children too, people run out of the restaurant but then the robbers were gone. They took my husbands watch - it was fake so we don't care but it was such a traumatising experience 😢 to be attacked like that, grounded and from the back when you can't see and so vulnerable and with your children. Absolutely awful. My kids are so shaken and were even afraid to sleep alone at night.
We won't be back here for sure..

Dude that is so Spain. I can totally see the locals getting angry about getting rough with a thief. Crime in general isn't really treated the same way as in the US. People tend to sympathize if not outright support the criminal. And if it's a crime against the government then you get total support. Lived there for 10 years and saw a lot of interesting stuff. As a spaniard that lived in Barcelona for a few years and got jumped once, a heads up if you travel there. You have to constantly be on watch. If you dont know the área, stop at somewhere safe to check directions, dont stop in the street or stay looking at ur phone. Dont carry anything valuable and choose very discrete jewellery (a friend of mine got a 3€ necklace snatched from their neck tho). In the metro stand with your back to the wall if u can and never let go of your bags, be careful while pulling out ur phone (another friend of mine got their phone stolen twice in the metro, in the same weekend) dont go in alleyways you dont know. Las Ramblas is very touristy and therefore a hotspot for problems, specially at night. Avoid most of Raval and gothic hoods at night. The moment u see someone being suspicious is usually too late. Dont think about it just leave. Go out in groups if u can. Take a cab if its late and ur having to walk for a bit. Barcelona is a great city but you always have to watch ur back. When i was jumped i was with my then bf, who was a huge dude. It didnt make a difference. If they want to rob u, they are not looking to hurt u, but they will do it to get what they want from u. Dont fight back and scream to catch peoples attention. I dont mean to scare anyone, big cities always have this things going on, but if u are not familiar with them you become an easy target

The sort of same thing happened to us just last August. We were looking for this “famous” tapas bar just a few blocks from the beach area. It was a quiet Street around 3pm. There was a skinny guy with a long beard walking and hovering over us. Myself, my husband and my 2 kids. Just like you we were really uber conscious about things like this. My daughter noticed him and in fact warned us in our native language “this guy has been following us, be careful with your stuff” after a few second he grabs my husbands watch with 2 hands. Right infront of us.. its true that you somehow freeze, we could have easily kicked him, but we didnt, we couldnt because we all froze.. my husband managed to hit him with the other hand thats when the thief used his foot against my husband’s thigh to have some leverage to ultimately break the rubber strap. He ran and a bunch of teenage French kids along with my husband ran after him.. I am a bit relieved that they didnt catch him. Im sure this syndicate has a plan B, a weapon or something incase things Go wrong. It was so traumatic indeed. We had a few more days left in Barcelona and I refused to leave the hotel after that. I am still shaking now as I type here… The locals and the police are indeed accomodating, however wonder why it is so rampant in Europe, Barcelona in particular. Also, always trust your intuition and don't discount feelings of fear or worry about appearing paranoid or being rude if you need to leave a location immediately. Hi. I've been to BCN a few times. These people always work in twos btw. One is to distract, and the other to get whatever it is from you and they will be immediately behind you. I've had two similar encounters, where they ask you for directions for example, and the first thing I did each time, was to immediately look behind me. Both times, I had someone reaching for my friend's purse. Once, the second time, I grabbed the person's hand and twisted it hard enough to send him off yelling and crying. I was only aware to always look behind me when someone asked me a question because my high school teacher, who spent every summer in Europe, told us to do so when traveling through there. Hope that helps someone.

Happened during day light, was our last day there and we was literally just saying hours before how safe we felt on our trip.

I'm so sorry this happened to you, but glad you got your watch back. I live in Barcelona, have been robbed here several times when I previously lived here or was visiting, and I have to take multiple precautions. Fortunately, and without wanting to tempt fate in any way, I have not been robbed since I moved back here last November, but I am extremely careful. Also, again, touch wood, I have never been violently mugged here.
I was robbed here on the first full day of my first visit here in 2002. I stupidly had all my cash on me (idiotic move), and it happened when we stopped for a coffee on a walking tour in Barrio Gótico. Classic distraction tactic, some gypsy kids (and we're talking really young here, which is depressing, barely teenage by my recollection) pestering us at our table. Irony of ironies, it happened just at the time our guide was telling us we needed to be careful with our stuff. I suddenly realised my wallet was gone. I stood up totally freaked out and panicking. Here's the amazing part - a plain clothes cop approached me and asked me if I'd been robbed, I said yes. They had caught the kids. As we moved along, I saw the kids had already split the money up, clever. They were pulling notes from everywhere, even from under one of their beanies. I got ALL my cash back. I was so, so lucky. I have never been that lucky again. Indeed one day many years later when living here, chasing after someone who robbed me, I ran into a cop and screamed at him that I'd been robbed, and there was the guy.... the cop didn't seem keen on helping, and I was now losing ground on the the thief, I screamed at him to something, and he assaulted me. He hit me with his knee so hard on my thigh that I could barely walk home afterwards.
These days, these activities are associated by Moroccan kids who've come here illegally and unaccompanied, sometimes as minors. It's sad because it leads to real discrimination against the many, many, decent Moroccans who live here. As if they weren't dealing with enough racism and religious bigotry already! They are as angry as anyone with these kids.
And the kids, well, I don't want to justify their heinous actions, but they have to make money somehow... they fall through the cracks in whatever system exists here. Also, there is a legal matter that only encourages them to keep doing this, because they can do it with impunity. If the value of a theft is below a certain level (I can't remember exactly, but let's say €600) essentially nothing happens to them, they don't go to prison, and get released out to keep on doing the same thing. This is a huge problem.
    My advice?
Well, you made a classic mistake. You stayed in the Barrio Gótico (Gothic Quarter). This is a beautiful place to visit in the day time, but best avoided by night. They target tourists there. If I'm ever there by night (and a rarely am) I stick to a few main streets. But then, I know this city well. Avoid. Also, the character of the Gótico has been hollowed out by mass tourism and Airbnb. Very few locals live there now as a result. So - avoid. Pickpocketing and well, I guess more violent muggings like yours are heavily centred upon areas with a high concentration of tourists. The Gótico has no soul anymore, much better to stay in Eixample which, although getting horrendously gentrified, is still a functioning area, is still very central and well connected to transport, is safe, and has plenty of bars and restaurants.
Anyway, I'm so glad neither of you was seriously hurt, and that your watch, which you said had sentimental importance, was returned. I've been to more than 30 countries on three continents, and Barcelona is by far the worts place I've been to for robberies. You might ask why I choose ti live here, in that case. Well, it's still a magical city, and with a little care, you can avoid the worst and enjoy the place.

For anyone reading this, stay away from super touristy areas like Las Ramblas at night and if you feel like you're being watched or followed pop into any of the stores that are open all night. Once you're in there they will give up after a short while. They want easy and fast targets. This definitely only happens in that particular area.

I am Spanish and I’m very sorry that this happened to you. Since some years ago Barcelona is in a free fall in terms of public safety. It is well known by Spaniards what Barcelona currently is, and many people (including me) have decided not to go again to that city unless it is extremely necessary. Sadly, groups of lads mostly from Morocco and Algeria are robbing people, specially if you look like a tourist, with almost complete impunity. And that’s actually the best thing that can happen to you in Barcelona if you get into trouble without even wanting it. Women who travel alone or women who travel with other women are also suffering sexual assaults pretty often, also from this kind of people. I think foreigners should be warned about this before going to Barcelona, because it became a pretty common thing. So please, take care if you go to Barcelona. And seriously think about changing your destination and come here to Madrid, our situation is not as bad as Barcelona's yet.

Being outnumbered and not knowing if weapons is plenty reason to let go of a special watch. Kudos to you for keeping your head and to Andriana for running interference.
When I travelled in Europe, I was aware that a nice watch attracts like a bug to light.
Also, tourists- prime targets of thieves, have telltales. It seemed that most attention was paid to the person wearing a backpack and activewear, or, to the person who looks well-heeled (esp if in nice heels). Blending in seemed safest though it’s a shame we even have to think like that.
So glad you got your watch back. So glad you both are safe. The world is still your oyster.

Glad you guys are safe and absolutely great critical thinking, taking the time to assess the situation instead of immediately attacking them potentially saved your lives! I know I would have tried to fight them but after watching this I’d be more inclined to think instead of just react. Thank you for the video, this will be in the back of my mind when traveling.

I been pickpoketed twice in my life. Both times were in Barcelona. The first time, I was 19 years old and fought the person, and got it back. Then, 30 years later, a group of them " steamed" the subway on NYE and got me. Again I instantly realised I been pickpockets. I confronted them, but they were to many in numbers. Like you, I made a police report and eventually got reimbursed for my losses. I can also add the police were very nice to me too.

I have been living in Barcelona for almost two years now and this is what scares me everyday
The same thing happened to me inside a major train station during a busy hour, but the police did not help me at all.
They could have checked the videos within the train station to see exactly what had happened, and who did it, yet they didn’t care.
You are very lucky that you have received help from the police and recovered your watch. Most importantly, I am glad that you guys are safe and nothing too serious happened.
Sadly, incidents like this happen more rampantly, even in broad daylight and people who witness crimes like this do not bother to help.
I hope that the government can do something about the growing number of crimes in this city every day.
This is caused by the increasing population of illegal immigrants and/or refugees in Spain due to their open door policy. These people are also victims, because of the system as they do not have work rights even after living here for several years.
How do they think they will survive ?
They will just continue living and surviving in this country at the expense of others.
I think that it is only fair to welcome refugees if they can manage to also provide for their primary needs and protect the interest of their own people (locals) where they can feel safe and be safe.
It is not just about exhibiting good political image, but also making things right.

The thieves just want your valuables if it looks like you have any. It sucks because I don't think I'd give the same advice to anyone visiting basically any other city in Spain. I was in Barcelona about 20 years ago. About 8 or so people went out to dinner at a nice restaurant. I was ready to go at about 9 pm .I asked the owner of the restaurant to call me a cab . He did but he would not allow me to stand outside at the front door to wait for the cab. He had the front door locked . When the cab came he walked me out and made sure I got in the cab safely. He was very nervous.
Also I know someone who ordered hot soup in Barcelona. She got extremely ill from a parasite and was in a hospital for a month. She lost about 40 pounds.

One of the things that judges would say over and over again is, nothing good happens in the streets at night. When I travel I always make sure I'm back indoors and safe before it gets dark. I felt my adrenaline kick in just listening to you, can't imagine how it must have actually felt. Totally normal to still feel shaken up. 2 guys on one scooter tailing you overseas is a tell tale sign that they've selected you and sketchy stuff is about to go down. Not much you can do aside from ducking into a store and hopefully shaking them off. Even then, they know this area and you're just a tourist.
Good call on not fighting or chasing them...they outnumber you, maybe armed, and it's over in seconds. They can have the watch, money, jewelry, whatever. But if they G-d forbid want to do worse things to you or Andriana, then it's game on to fight to escape. Hysterical tough as nails wife is a major plus.

I lived in BCN for 5 years. Don't go down the side streets unless there are lots of people around. I never got robbed with violence, but got robbed when I was on the beach at night and someone crawled on their stomach and got my bag as there was a dip from where I was on the beach to the descent to the sea. I had my passport, credit cards, 300 in cash, and an ipad in there. I even had my phone stolen from my pocket while I was walking on the street in Barcelona. I think any area in center: Raval, Barceloneta, Gothic is dangerous. There are gangs who are trained to take things from you without violence (mostly metro/beach) and with violence. The violent ones are usually MENAs (an acronym that stands for unaccompanied minors in Spanish). Do not wear a purse or watch in Barcelona and be careful with taking your phone out. I've seen guys on motorbikes ride by and grab women's purses. This happened to a 60ish woman from S. Korea in 2018/2017 who was there to attend a meeting on crime (I think she was an ambassador or gov't official of some sort). She fell to the ground, developed a brain bleed, and died. I've also seen groups of guys in Barceloneta attack a group of around 5 German guys and girls and beat them up for their things. You are very smart that you didn't try to defend yourself as you can't even get pepper spray anywhere in BCN. Also, you have to understand the reason theft is so high in BCN, the amount is probably even more now, but if someone is caught stealing or attempting to steal something that's less than around 400 in value, they won't get in trouble.

We were in the same Gothic district in Nov of last year after a dinner late at 11 pm through some thinly occupied area with guys hanging out talking loud I thought were having a good time. Now that i heard this story I will be extra careful and not even have my phone out looking for directions or talking on it as this could offer a phone grab opportunity. Bottom line being extra cautious and alert and not hang out late night is the key. I am glad you both are safe. A lesson we all should learn from this incident.

Very sorry to hear about you’re experience in Barcelona, and pleased you were unharmed and got your property back.
I visited Barcelona a couple of weeks ago for half a day with my wife and 12 year old daughter while staying in nearby Salou. We went with a tour guide who left us to explore by ourselves for about 3 hours. She issued no cautions about street crime.
We walked for about 20-25 minutes from our drop off point at the train station to where we caught a taxi to the stunning Sagrada Familia Basilica. Happy to say we experienced only friendly helpful locals and never once felt uncomfortable or threatened by anyone we encountered.
We did come across what appeared to be homeless people in a park we cut through, but they were friendly and harmless. Being from the U.K. we are very pale skinned and were wearing our ‘tourist’ clothes, so obvious targets for street criminals, but we were not approached once. I’m average height 5’9”, and no street fighter, plus well past my prime, but felt safe.
We may just have been lucky, but your experience is a good lesson about staying alert and being aware of the potentially risky parts of foreign cities.
