  • Dynamic range refers to the difference between the quietest and loudest parts of a song. A higher dynamic range can make mixes more punchy and clear but you’ll sacrifice loudness to leave more dynamics. You do not want to crush your dynamics though or you will ruin your mix. You can also benefit from working in higher bit depths to gain greater dynamic range on your faders.
    In this video, I will teach you everything you need to know about dynamic range and explore. I will cover everything you need to know, from the basics of dynamic range to advanced techniques for maximizing it in your mixes.

    I think you can use the Oxford inflator as a clipper only plugin by turning on the red clip 0 db button and turning down the effects slider all the way with effect green light on. Use the input gain to push the signal into the clipper and adjust output as necessary. The effects slider I believe is used to add saturation.

      Check out the manual so you get a full understanding. The input value is just a typical input slider however you can overdrive the plugin for distortion: media.uaudio.com/support/manuals/dd/Oxford%20Inflator%20Manual.pdf

    40 or 50 years ago, this 9:25 would have gotten an engineer FIRED, regardless of who requested such treatment of the audio.

    Dynamic range also effects the separation of sounds; not just the separations of frequencies, but the separation of timbre within a frequency. It's much more complicated than the range of 'loudness'?

      I agree that dynamic range obviously exists within each recorded track/stem but it doesn’t have any capability to separate sounds. I think what your trying to say is the control of dynamics on each track can affect that sound in mix as a whole. When you state the timbre yes if you knock off the peaks the timbre of the source can change if the moves are drastic. The exact definition of dynamic range is: Every piece of music has a certain dynamic range, meaning the difference between the loudest and softest passages. Audio gear also has a distinctive dynamic range, though in this case the term describes the boundaries of what that piece of equipment is capable of producing.
      So in short although it doesn’t have the ability to separate sounds I can agree in context that dynamic range can affect how sounds are perceived in a mix but that’s beyond what the point of this video was meant to be. But great to point out.

      @@DistinctMastering Hello, just wondering is "Oxford Inflator" Strictly a Clipper or does it do something else as well ? I'm Guessing the Curve control is for Soft/Hard Clipping and the Effect is a Dry/Wet control, so with that being said could the same result be achieved with any other clipper that has those controls or does Inflator offer something extra? i see it used by a lot of pro's so was just curious.

    Bro how can you compare two things and not gain match them !?

    • @DistinctMastering
      @DistinctMastering  2 місяці тому

      I always recommend to level match when comparing two sources.
