  • In this video I do a quick demo of the LR Baggs Lyric pickup, along with a condenser microphone for reference.
At the end of the video I talk about my experience with this pickup, and the issues that I’ve had with it.
Hope this video helps you decide on your next pickup!
If you have any questions feel free to post them in the comments, and I’ll try to get to them as soon as I can.

Thanks for this video. You answered my question. Reading that Dana Bourgeois will only install Lyrics in his guitars, I decided to go with the best. After installing, I was concerned with the extremely weak signal compared to the under-saddle LR Baggs in my other guitar. Not only that but even with the weak signal I get feedback whereas the under-saddle is loud and has no feedback. The plus side is, it sounds so natural that unless I have the reverb turned up, it is hard to tell if the amp is on. Requiring an active DI just complicates the rig. The guitar also needs a sound hole feedback buster, which I would have to cut to allow space for the Lyric's controls. I think I need to re-think my thinking.

Thanks for the comment. I’m glad that you found this video helpful!
I love the sound of the Lyric, but I just don’t find it to be the most practical live pickup. That’s why I’ve switched all of my guitars now to the Anthem. I can’t say enough good things about that system. Although it doesn’t sound hardly as “natural” as the lyric, I feel like it’s so close that no one in the audience would know the difference.

Martin still sounds like a Martin with the lyric pickup. The best acoustic pickup to my ears.

My Martin HD28V sounds great through my Roland Chorus 90 w/o any external preamp.

IMHO, the advantages of a lyric over a K&K are so minimal that I’d prefer to go with my trusty K&K mini pure any day of the week. Sure, the lyric sounds slightly more realistic (it’s a mic), but that comes with other problems.

I've used the K&K pickup too (I wish I would've done a demo of the K&K in a D35 I recently sold), and I would agree that it is a very simple and reliable pickup. I like that it doesn't require a battery, and they are inexpensive to buy and install. That being said, I think it's easier to get a good sound out of other pickups. They all have their pros and cons, you just have to find which one works best for you. Thanks for the comment!

Just ordered the K&K pure mini ! My LR Baggs sounded great until it didn’t. The volume knob went on the fritz. So yes….it is a mic and, it does present it own problems

my friend, do you prefere the sound of the lyric or the anthem? do you think the anthem changed the unplugged sound of the guitar? thanks from brazil!!!!

I personally prefer the sound of the Anthem, but it does change the character of your guitar a little bit. I always say that the Anthem sounds like "your guitar, but bigger". It adds some low end, but in a nice way that makes your guitar sound bigger and fuller in the room. The lyric sounds a lot closer to your unplugged sound, but in my opinion it doesn't work nearly as well as the Anthem in a band setting. Hope that helps!

Curious as what EQ you were doing to make the Lyric sound better.

With this guitar, I usually boost the low, and the high frequencies, and cut the low mids. So normally I'll have about a 3db boost at 80Hz, a 3db cut around 240Hz up to around 400Hz, and about a 1.5 db boost above 6kHz. This is usually where I start with the Lyric, and then I dial it in from there to fit the room that I am playing in. Hope that helps!
