If I remember correctly from when I was a kid in the late 60s, we used a paperclip that went in from the back of the alternator and it held the brushes in place till we assembled the front half with the armature on it to the posterior part with the fields. Once all was in place we would pull the paperclip out releasing the brushes. It usually made sense to replace the brushes when you rebuilt an alternator, starter, or generator while you had it apart.
@@DavidSmith-fs4nt yes, you can definitely wiggle something thin in that hole near the rear bearing and hold the brushes down before you disassemble it. I figured that out after I had it apart 😂😂😂😂
