    Thank you for watching my videos! This channel is dedicated to animal education and improving the lives of captive animals.
    Here’s little about me!
    My name is Meghan Arriola and I live in Texas with my husband Jaime, where I dedicate my time to taking care of exotic and domesticated animals on my farm. We run a rescue and sanctuary for animals like alpacas, birds and reptiles. I do animal education presentations for groups and schools. Our alpacas also do events where we are able to teach people about these unique animals. I have used service dogs for medical needs for over 10 years and I am an advocate for assistance animals and mental health awareness.
    I am an animal educator that brings science related ideas to an audience from around the world by presenting fun and interesting topics in a family friendly way. Animals touch our lives in unique ways everyday as simply being our pets and companions, but how can we make their lives equally as special now that they live in captivity? My UA-cam channel and blog explore ways to meet this goal by tackling things like animal behavior, human-animal relationships and veterinary medicine. Animal science is a great way to teach people of all ages that education is fun and nerdy is cool.
    My previous animal related work experience includes working in veterinary clinics, private zoos, training horses and volunteer work in wildlife rehabilitation, rescue/foster/adoption programs and therapeutic horsemanship for children with disabilities.
    When I am not working with animals, I am working at the health care clinic owned by my husband Jaime and I, where we provide services to low income, minority neighborhoods. We have been on the frontlines fighting covid19. I also have a passion for art and I am an award winning painter and photographer and published author. I am naturally very introverted but I am extroverted about sharing my passions and doing my part to make the world a better place!

    4 years ago, one of my dogs had struvite bladder stones and had to have surgery. Since then, she has been on Royal Canin. Having 2 dogs, the other ate it, and his weight ballooned, and he has arthritis. In trying to find another food for my overweight guy, I looked at the ingredients on the back of the Royal Canin and I was stunned to see what was in it. Corn was on the top of the list. I just trusted my vet. I'm going to switch to Wellness Senior and Weight Control. I'm hoping this will help the overweight guy and I will give my girl vitamin supplements for urinary tract health. Thank you for this video. It really helped me feel more comfortable about ditching the prescription food.

      The high corn sets up an unnatural flora in the GI tract for a dog. Unnatural flora contributes to poor metabolism/normal-weight-homeostasis. Best thing for weight is in dogs is raw. Switch to commercial raw if you don't have time to research raw nutrition. I recommend Aunt Jeni's if closer to East Coast and Small Batch brand if in CA. Northern Naturals might be a good brand. Stella and Chewy makes a frozen or freeze dried raw. I use Stella and Chewy but not every day because I think it has too much copper and other added nutrients. Raw organ meat is full of vitamins and minerals so I think it is overkill and dangerous for a raw company to supplement. That's just my gut opinion given that I have not contacted the company to try to find out exact amounts added of various nutrients.

    I dont see any video specific to cats... but I wanted to ask a question. My cat had crystals in his urine starting about 4 years ago.I took him to the vet . they told me he was almost completely blocked from the crystals. They put in a catheter to help them pass but as soon as they took it out it would block again. He was in so much pain... they gave me a prescription for his food. Hes on royal canine SO dry cat food, and hills prescription CD wet food. I was told one is for the health of his bladder the other is to help breakdown the crystals.
    My cat ended up having surgery... I cant remember what they called it but they reattached his urethra to a new hole they made. I was told later that the difficulty with his healing was due to the vet synching the stitches to tight wich caused the hole to completely close so then he couldn't go to the bathroom at all. They did the surgery 3 times before sending me to a specialist. they also said he had the cats form of merca. Antibiotic resistance. When I took him to the specialist he basically said he had to have surgery. The hole was so small he could barely pass the urine. I didn't have anymore money.. we were already about 8000.00 in. The vet said he had about 2 weeks to live. I was beside myself. This poor cat has just been tortured with everything he went through and now its a waiting game. That was over 2 years ago. I STILL have him on the prescription diet food. Its so unbelievably expensive. And he still has issues with his bladder. Hes been on all sorts of antibiotics to get rid of the infections but never seems to clear it completely. In march he was on an antibiotic that was in shot form for 21 days and then an Oral antibiotic for anothet 10 days. Hes better for a while but not for very long. The vet said the food should be helppingwith some of this issue but all its helping with is emptying my pockets. Please do you know of a better choice for me to choose when it comes to food for him with the problems he has? Also what about probiotics? I feel like he should be taking something with all these antibiotics. Do you have any input on that as well? Thank you for your time! I hope you get this message and have some input on this to help.

      Well as you saw in this video, his prescription food is keeping him sick. Sounds like he is more prone to this issue than most cats. So I would only feed raw food if it were my cat. He should not have any kibble and he should have a drinking fountain with moving water.

    I’ve recently cut back on the amount of kibble I feed my dog. I often feed her hard boiled egg, or raw egg shell from whenever I make eggs and she licks off the left over white. I also, but not all the time. This is a great video btw. I’ll look forward on transition my dog to a raw diet ❤️🐶. When you were talking about vets not recommending raw diets for dogs, In my experience it’s true. I’m in Amino and on chat they started talking about raw diets and a vet said it’s not ideal, that veterinary grade kibble is better

    I don't understand why vets prescribe this food. If you have to keep bringing your pet back in, that just shows its not taking care of the issue. It makes them look bad. My vet told me that my cat will continue to form stones every so often. How can I make sure he doesn't? I cannot afford a raw diet but I have found a wet food that only has 3-4 ingredients in it. Vets are supposed to help your pet, not maintain an issue that an be resolved. My dog has lupus - what the heck can I feed her? Same thing goes for what to do about megacolon and obstipation. Treating these things is expensive and I have maxed out my CareCredit. Please help!!!

    It's D, L (ell not i (eye)) methionine (Meh-thigh-oh-Nean). Pronunciation not important. You are so spot on about how these foods hurt dogs. The ingredients are garbage, super cheap but yet this prescription food is very, very expensive. I've tried so hard to explain this to friends but if this pandemic has taught us one thing it is that most people are sheep-- They don't want to read, they don't want to think and they just want to be told what to do by and "expert". They don't want to bother to understand that it's all about the profit with these pharmaceutical and food companies and they can get away with so much more than can the human food and pharm/med industries. If they only understood how much corruption and greed in the human pharm/med/food (read about the history of oxycontin if you doubt me) they would realize that their dog is in great danger.

    When you see that the first 2 ingredients listed on the package are corn or rice, you know the company is in it to make as much profit as possible not the well being of your pet. Corn and rice are low cost additives that make huge profits for dog food manufacturers.
    I too have done the research and have decided to feed my dog Orijen dog food. I use the dry kibble but I add water to it and let it soak for 10 min before feeding my dog.

    • @tamiramos5873
      @tamiramos5873 8 місяців тому

      My dog just finished a bag of Regional Red Orijen. I asked my vet about food. She told me that you can feed whatever you want that makes you feel comfortable but grain free is bad because it can cause heart issues (cats don't get the same advice). So, she said, if you want to keep grains out of the food you buy, just consider adding back in your own home cooked natural rice to their diet. Just keep the corn, wheat, and soy out of the food.

    Most pet food brand is made using human grade meat in England. I agree with what you are saying here but in England raw diets aren’t encouraged as much because pet food is better quality and there is more risk of salmonellosis in raw meat.

    • @TheDesiLiter
      @TheDesiLiter 4 роки тому +1

      I think you missed the whole point. Even if they use human grade meat, there still isn't enough of it and moisture to prevent issues. And when tested, kibble also contained salmonella, and even worse, is mold. Dogs can eat salmonella without issues, it affecting us is the issue, but I assume you handle raw meat when making dinner, and thats the same meat you would feed your dog when raw feeding.

The careful balance of providing all the amino acids the animal needs while reducing the workload on the kidneys, while limiting muscle wasting and reducing metabolic acidosis. I trained vets on these diets for 34 years! And I was trained by the board certified nutritionists and chemists who formulated them. Actually there are many vets that would agree with this. If you are comparing vets to doctors it only shows that you do not understand that the standards of veterinary medicine is so extremely far behind human medicine, in regards to resources and accountability. And as a nurse you should understand that doctors are sometimes wrong so it's better to seek other opinions and you should also know that medicine changes a lot over the years. So hearing that you're a nurse I'm honestly really shocked to hear that you are under the impression that vets and doctors are gods.
