    Hello Dr. Ruth,
    First of all, thank you so much for the video! I'm going to check out the original Crockpet diet. I have a few concerns with my 9 year old cat, Dexter. At his latest checkup my vet said that he is in stage 2 kidney failure with a creatinine level of 2.1 and a USG level of 1.028. Dexter has been on the Royal Canin Urinary SO wet food formula for about 7 or 8 years due to his previous bladder issues and kidney stones. He has 't had a stone for about 3-4 years and gets regular 6 month checkups. He seemed fine so I was shocked when I heard about his kidney disease. I asked my vet about what I needed to do to slow the progression and all she said was to come back in 6 months and see if his numbers worsen and then a treatment plan can be put in place and that not much can be done because there is no diet that accommodate bladder and kidney issues.Do you think the original crockpet diet could help Dexter? I'm sorry for the novel, I just feel so very lost right now. ='{

      Hi Patty,
      Your Vet's response makes me a little crazy, but she is operating with the tools that are considered mainstream. Did your vet tell you the average survival time of stage 2 diseases is over 1100 days (3 Years)? Yes the Original Crockpet Diet can help by converting your cat to an anti-inflammatory diet, instead of a high carb pro-inflammatory prescription diet. As far as the urine stones/crystals go, it's a matter of knowing what the stone was composed of and the urine pH at the time, and then using an additive to adjust the pH either up or down, depending on what the issue was. Goal pH is 7-7.5. Check out the Kidney Health Program I developed to help you understand and slow the progress of kidney disease. theoriginalcrockpetdiet.com/product/the-comprehensive-kidney-health-program-for-dogs-and-cats/

      +Pattya610 here's a few suggestions worth trying
      drink plenty of water.
      eat watermelon - that helps prevent kidney disease naturally.
      try taking pomegranate seeds and drink organge juice - these can cure kidney disease .
      avoid meat, asparagus, radish and alcohol.
      (I discovered these and why they work from Hollistic Heal Plan site )

    Dear Doctor Ruth , Thank you for your article ; almost 2 years back I lost my beloved cat Lila to CKD age 17years 7 months.. I had her from her infancy .I am sure my cat had a good life , she got the best of fresh fish, lean meat and high quality tinned foods and choice dry kibbles . The water bowl was changed daily and importantly she was never cold and kept from harms way and in no way pressured . I gave her a yearly vet check so the end stage left me very upset . I still miss her though .RegardsMark

    Hello Dr. Ruth, thank you for sharing your wisdom with us. I've been cooking for my dogs for years now. All healthy stuff. For about 3 years now it's been only filtered water, even in their meal prep! Tomorrow, I'm going out to purchase the in ingredients that are in you Crockpot Diet. I've even been watching videos on how to administer liquids to dogs. I'm committed to doing all that I can to help my boys "have golden years". Thanks again💞🙏

    Thank you so much for making this, Dr.
    My 16.5 year old male cat rejects the Aventia his internist gave him. He ate it at first in his wet food, but after a week he gave it hard pass. Tried a couple weeks later with a much smaller amount and he walked away from the dish.
    I know getting fish oil into him is crucial. Do you have any tips for how I could do this with some success? I assume he’s not into the overtly fishy smell.

    Hi. My dog just had a fever last week. She never showed any illnesses. That was the first time that she had a fever but when I brought her to the vet, she suddenly suffers stage 4 Kidney failure. No dialysis and kidney transplant available here and the vet wants me to put her to sleep.
    My dog always looked healthy and she always loved eating that's why it never occurred to me that she is sick. This is the first time I see her lethargic and always want to sleep, doesn't want to eat. She's going to be 9 this coming Dec. 3rd but I'm scared if she can reach that age. However, I'm always so diligent to take care of her, her sister and my other dogs that as much as I can, I would do to help save her. At least she is eating even if she doesn't want to.
    I'll try to see if she will improve on the next days, then I would decide what to do next, but for now, can I ask for food supplement that could help her? Also, are the diet for human and dog kidney failure the same? Please reply.. thank you so much.

    Thank you so much for this video. This has given me some pointers on how to help our dog dealing with this illness. I have a question for you, Dr. Do you have any thoughts on Azodyl and Renal K for treating kidney failure? What's you opinion on renal care dry food?
    Thanks again, Dr.

    • @DrRuthRoberts
      @DrRuthRoberts  7 років тому

      Hi Luis, Azodyl is helpful, but has a limited range of organisms. I think Money is better spent on a broader spectrum product, with a higher dose. Fish oil is also very helpful bit.ly/2seYei9. POtassium is helpful when the potassium blood level is in the middle range and lower. What's in the blood stream isn't necessarily whats in the cell. Dry food is an abomination - it's what has kept pets slightly dehydrated Cooked or canned food is the way to go. The Original CrocPet Diet will give your pet the nutrients she needs to repair tissue, and the moisture helps the kidney's do their job. Check out the full kidney program for more help bit.ly/2ssV24S

    Dear Dr Ruth... Thank you for the video... it is most helpful.
    My lulu is a 5 yrs 9 months old female Labrador Retriever. Her recent echo revealed she has mild valvular disfunction (mitral) and moderate thickening of ventricular walls. Her kidneys were also found fibrotic and have some stones. She has reduced weight in last 3-4 months. Avg weight 34-35 kgs most of her life but she now weighs 29kgs/64 lbs... her torso and thigh muscle looking particularly lean. Perhaps its cachexia.
    Creatine and Bun are consistently elevating :
    27th Feb : Serum creatine 1.6 mg/dL
    5th Mar : Serum creatine 2.2 mg/dL and BUN 34 mg/dL
    [AZODYL WAS STARTED ON 7th MAR]
    10th Mar : Serum creatine 2.4 mg/dL and BUN 46 mg/dL
    17th Mar : Serum creatine 2.6 mg/dL and BUN 54 mg/dL
    She is fed on home cooked food. I am not cutting back on protein yet.
    I am encouraging her to drink more water by flavouring with chicken stock. She is currently eating and drinking (3-3.5 ltrs/day) well.
    - Prescribed prescription drugs : (Ramipril) Cardace 3.75 mg per day ( instead of enalapril for better kidney protection as per our vet) + Lasilactone for heart.
    - Prescribed supplements : Vetriscience Cardio Strength, Vetriscience Renal Essentials, Vetoquinol Rubenol and Azodyl (probiotic for Enteric Dialysis).
    - She has been started on Homeopathy medication in parallel from 19th March
    - We have recently received shipment of below supplements from Dr Peter Dobias web store . Lulu has now been started on Omega 3 and will introduce others gradually over 1-2 weeks
    Feelgood Omega 3
    SoulFood Multivitamin
    GreenMin
    GutSense (would replace Azodyl once current bottle is over)
    Request you to guide me on anything else I should or not critically be doing to arrest her increasing creatine and bun level.
    Also, Rubenol (Rhubarb extract) we are giving halved dose instead of full, as it may have high oxalate content. With kidney stone problem (and not knowing what type of stone it is)... can I safely taper rubenol to full dose of 2 tabs twice daily in your opinion please ?

    I just started mine on Darwin KS, raw food for cats with kidney disease. Curious to see if it will help her regain her weight. She never liked the prescription canned foods (aka rice dinners), and is still crazy about kibble. I'm grinding some of her old kibble and mixing it with her raw food to get her to eat. Not ideal, but these vet diets are lacking meat. Day 3, so far so good

    Hi doctor, my cat has stage 4 kidney disease. He eats Royal Canin dry now. I just started giving him Renafood once a day. In your experience, how does the Feline Renal Support from Standard Process compare to the Renafood? Do you recommend 1 over the other?
    I’ve also started giving him a probiotic capsule once per day.
    [I’m also giving him sub liquids every 3 days. We’re only on our 2nd bag but he’s been very cooperative so far. He’s such a good cat]
    I have another cat that is currently in good health, is it a good idea to give my other cat Renafood every 3 days as preventative maintenance for her? TIA😊

    This is good information. Which when I went to the vet awhile back she said to do low protein for his kidneys. They also prescribed dosequin pills for inflammation in joints. Will this work? I hope it does. My cat is now 15 and named Petra. He also gets skinny sometimes even after feeding him can food. I also noticed when he chews he has a hard time chewing and it's like I can hear his teeth grinding. Is there anything to do for that? Sorry for all the questions. I just wish I could figure all this out. I wish vet visits wasn't so high

      So sorry to hear this! It sounds like your baby's kidney disease is very advanced. Can you get fluids from a local veterinarian? this will help flush out the waste products. Also, get a phosphate binder alike aluminum hydroxide, and see if you can get her to take some by mouth. If you can get the appetite back this way, then my kidney program will help. We also ship to Mexico at theoriginalcrcokpetdiet.com
      Full spectrum probiotics are better, but we have to flush out the kidneys first to get the appetite back. If no fluids available, you can try forcing small amounts of water down, as long as it is not vomited.

    Hi Dr. Ruth. Video is very informative. My 3 year old golden retriever who was 30 days pregnant stopped eating and her breath smelled horrible. Took her to the vet and they did ultrasound, and blood work. Came back with elevated wbc and kidney function was at 3.8. They did an emergency spayed because they thought pregnancy was the problem. Pregnancy was fine but I told them to go ahead with spay because I wanted to save my baby. They kept her in hospital for 2 days on IV fluids and antibiotics. Her kidney labs went up to 4.8. She is home now and eating science diet kidney canned food. Plus on 2 antibiotics. We go back on Monday for labs. Today Christmas Day she seems like her old self. Could the pregnancy caused the kidney failure.? What else can I do. I’m only feeding her 2 cans per day even though she would eat more. Should I feed her more? She does drink water but not a lot. We feed her ice chips because she loves them. Any thing else I should do. I want to keep her as long as I can. Please let me know

    Dear dr,
    My shitzu dog is 11 and half years old . She didn’t eat well. After researching, I cook chicken, salmon , sweet potatoes , carrots , peas and some smoothies with blueberries, 🍏, cranberries ( she likes smoothies) no more dog roll foods. She is getting better. She takes probiotics, fish oil, vitamin E, some little turmeric . I also give her support kidney supplement. Last time her vet gave her anti acid , she threw up . The vet didn’t ask what kind of her food or give any nutrition advice . Do u think I should ask the blood test for her ? She is doing better , she starts eating her favorite food as chicken, salmon . Little egg yolk once in a while . Thanks 🙏 dr

      Home Cooked diets like The Original CrockPet Diet (drruthroberts-com.myshopify.com/products/the-original-crockpet-diet-for-dogs-and-cats-membership-only-1) are important to keep the diet balanced. what you are feeding is a step in the right direction, but very high in sugars. Dr. Ruth,
    I have a senior Shih Tzu I rescued 5 years ago. When I got him, he was at the beginning stages of CKD. As well as a great murmur. Dr put him on KD. I have fed him dry at will, which he nibbled on at night mostly, and he was eating 1/2 to 3/4 Can of the stew varieties. All of his kidney levels are in normal range as of last Thursday. Recently, though, he's been diagnosed with CHF. His appetite isn't great, now that he's on meds for his heart, although he acts hungry, he just picks at the KD. What do you recommend for a diet for him, since I have to watch both heart and kidney health? I am totally willing to cook for him, which I've done for all of my pets through the years. I'm thinking something homecooked would be more palatable. Thank you!

      Hello - without knowing more details about Kidney values, if you were feeding dry food, you can likely feed the crockpet diet, as the increased moisture will often Improve kideny Function. So sorry to hear about the heart issue, so for now may need to offer some yummy canned food. Hello Dr. Roberts, we have Cali our dog, she is 12 years old, 12.3 lbs. Poodle mix. She had an episode on Sunday, she was lethargy, disoriented, with low energy. It happened to her 3 months ago, also. We went to the ER and they run a blood test and said that she has a kidney problem. BUN/Urea was 47 mg/dL and CREA was 3.9 mg/dL. The doctor said that they need to run a orine test and also gave to her antibiotic and fluids. We decided to wait until we can take her to her regular vet. She is now with more energy, eating and drinking without problems, and sleeping well today. We usually give to her Science Diet for adults 11+ small bites. Please let us know what do you could recommend us. Thanks

      Sorry to hear about this, but glad things are better. I would suggest getting her urine cultured to make sure there is no infection causing it, and also to see if her kidney values are back to normal. If she has elevated kidney values when she feels good, then look at my kidney product for help. If they are normal, ask your vet about Addisons disease, as it can caiuse all sorts of issues. Hi, i don't know if you'll read this but I need your help. My cat has been diagnosed with Chronic Kidney insufficency, and she's been on Ipakitine for 10 days now (0.5g in the morning and 0.5g in the evening) and she's only had Renal/diabettes cat food to eat. The bad thing is that she's not eating as much as she needs to and she lost weight. I need advices with what else am I allowed to feed my cat. All the vets in my town say "only renal/diabettes food, and that's it!", but the fact is I'm feeling I'm starving my cat and I can see how she gets from bad to worse each day. I've had blood tests and visited 3 vets with the cat and over 10 with the blood results, and they all said CKI and only Renal food...and nobody says that my cat can live more than 2 months or that she's allowed to eat anything else. My cat is 7 years and 9 months old, indoor, not neutered and 1.7kg now, she never was heavier than 2.2-2.3kg Initial blood results showed an increased BUN 185.8 mg/dl, GLU 184 mg/dl, T-pro 8.31 g/dl, GPT 30 IU/L and Cre of 6.8mg/dl, ALP 49 IU/L Second blood (after 10 days) result : BUN 139.3 mg/dl, GLU 255 mg/dl, T-pro 7.22 g/dl, GPT 67 IU/L and Cre of 6.5 mg/dl, ALP 54 IU/L, Ca 13.04 mg/dl, WBC 5.7, LYM 1.7, MONO 0.5, NEUT3.5, EOS 0.0, LYM% 31.3, MON% 6.1, NEU% 62.1, EOS% 0.5, HGB 9.1g/dl, HCT 23.3, RBC 5.34, MCV 43.6, MCH 17.1, MCHC 39.2, RDW%19.4, RDWa 30.7, PLT 151, MPV 9.8. She has fresh water in all her favourite places and I'm even helping her drink, she urinates 3 times a day on average and poos once every 2 days. I especially need help with what else can I feed her but any kind of help is more than welcome. I'm aware that CKI isn't curable, but I want to make my cat feel better and live for as long as she can. Thanks in advance.

    • @DrRuthRoberts
      @DrRuthRoberts  6 років тому +1

      I'm so sorry to hear your cat is having so much trouble. The problem with conventional renal diets, is that cats often don't eat them, and when they don't eat they lose weight and feel worse. Her renal disease is quite advanced, and if you can do subcutaneous fluids, this is what will create the most relief for her. Some cats will not permit this, but most veterinarians can teach you how to give fluids under the skin. A potentially better phosphate binder is aluminum hydroxide. If you need help coming up with a holistic plan, check out this link: theoriginalcrockpetdiet.com/product/the-comprehensive-kidney-health-program-for-dogs-and-cats/, and for a health plan guided by me, theoriginalcrockpetdiet.com/work-with-dr-ruth-roberts/.

    Hi Dr. Ruth. My 14 yr old Bengal cat had his blood and urine tested recently and his SDMA level was 14. I was told that is the highest end of the normal range. He had been vomiting 3 or 4x week and also drinking more water and peeing more. They said he looks great, has maintained his weight perfectly in the last 2 years, and would never guess he is 14. Suggested either more wet food (which I can barely get my cat to eat more than 1.5 oz/day of) or a dry kidney Rx diet. I would hate to do the dry Rx diet because he does much better on a grain free/holistic diet. Where can I find suggestions for foods for him? Are there certain proteins that are better or worse? I appreciate all the information in this video! Cooking for him intrigues me.

    • @DrRuthRoberts
      @DrRuthRoberts  7 років тому +1

      That's awesome for 14! SDMA is going to be elevated in 85%of cats his age, so if everything else is working, bun& Creat are normal, then I wouldn't worry about it so much. The vomiting is another story - try changing the food, and make sure no internal problems in the GI tract. Theoriginalcrockpetdiet.com can help you change his diet to relieve the vomiting.

    I cant get my dog to eat hardly anything now. Drinks lots of water. Hes a 15 yr old mini-pincher just diagnosed Oct 3. Advanced stage. Funny how last week he was his spunky self. • @DrRuthRoberts
      @DrRuthRoberts  6 років тому

      So sorry to hear this. This often does happen - everything ok, then not ok. Work with your vet to get anti-nausea meds and at least sub-q fluids to help flush the kidneys out. Bone broth, any liquids are you can get down are helpful. If you can get through this crisis phase, I have several options in my Kidney Program to help stabilize and often improve function.

    Why do you recommend a high protein diet, when CKD causes proteinuria an increases kidney inflammation and subsequent fibrosis?

    • @DrRuthRoberts
      @DrRuthRoberts  5 років тому +1

      Pavan, I recommend a moderate protein diet like The Original CrockPet Diet to reduce inflammation, and maintain muscle mass in older pets. Low protein diets are not recommended in human medicine until there is no other way to control phosphorous, as they have seen their patients do worse and enjoy life less with muscle loss. Other supplements are also used to reduce inflammation in my program.

    Hello Dr Ruth, My dog is 9 yrs old and recently started acting different then usual, so I decided to take her to the vet to get her checked out and she had blood work and urine sample done. Then I was told her blood work was clear and with her urine sample it showed she only had a small infection, so got antibiotics for that. I gave her all her antibiotics until done, but she still seems off ? She is shaky, drinks lots of water, wakes up through out the night, urines more then usual, seems off with things and is not playing as much, she also seems tired throughout the day; She also seems to eats here and there throughout the day. I did some research and I think its kidney disease do to her symptoms.What do you recommend it might be? Or do you think I might be wrong? I need help because I hate seeing my baby like this. I'm taking her in to the vet again, but Id like to get different opinions. Please Help Thank you!

      So sorry to hear your baby is having trouble. If the blood work was normal, then it's probably not kidney disease. I'd get her urine rechecked and make sure it is ok, but if she is shaky and weak, she may be painful from arthritis. Pain Masquerades as a lot of things, and if you see that your dog is also slow to get up, then likely it's arthritis. Dogs will drink water like crazy when your faith, and they don't know what to do about it. As a result, then they will need to urinate more frequently.

      it does say in the video that if the situation is now so extreme then NOT to feed high protein. I agree it is confusing. So I am thinking perhaps next time I take a young pet I will feed high protein from the onset. It seems high protein helps preserve what is left of the functioning digestive system. However when the digestive system is so bad that it can not get rid of excess chemicals made by protein then protein Should be avoided.

      So, an update. First off, it was some work. I found a kidney, liver and blood cleanse product online (canine kidney health - google those words) and began administering it to him with a greens mixture and some apple cider vinegar, four times a day. I switched to a mostly raw, high protein diet from BlueRidgeMeats (a mixture of chicken/chicken bone and then organ meat). I continued to exercise him twice a day. But, that was my situation. The kidney health website has a good bit of knowledge on things you can try to do.
      His BUN levels when first measured were 107, then up to 147. His creatinine levels were in the 7's. After 4 weeks of treatment, I had him tested again and all levels were normal. I don't think my results were typical. The vet recommended we put him to sleep, originally. He was really surprised.
      I recommend reading as much as you can, finding channels and support like here on YT and then making educated decisions. If you want to PM me for additional information, feel free to.

Today he got a second blood test and the doctor again told me that we need to put my dog down. His blood showed that his levels for kidneys were very high. My doctor said that he has never seen levels that high on a dog and definitely they don't live when they're that high . Please help!

    What about raw diets??

    • @DrRuthRoberts
      @DrRuthRoberts  5 років тому

      I find cooked diets are much easier to digest for pets that are already ill. Traditional Chinese Medicine discusses the stomach as the cooker of the 100 deg soup. Raw diets are cold and damp, which can be injurious to an already weakened digestive system.

    This was very informative. I just want to ask, does CKD on its last stage can cause neurological symptoms? Such as muscle spasm and long seizures ? I had a cat that my vet wasn't able to diagnose and pinpoint the type of the disease. Most vet clinics here don't do blood test because they lack needed equipment. Anyways, my cat became ill suddenly and was lethargic. By looking, the vet said that my cat was infected with a parasite that damaged his liver because his gums was yellow and his inner ears as well (Jaundice). He was drinking a lot and peeing a lot. He was eating for two days and stopped, so I had to force feed him home cooked food, in addition to canned wet food. The vet gave him a shot to take care of the parasite and put him on antibiotics for two days only and told me to continue injecting him with B.Complex ADE , a nutritional supplement. However, he was still getting worse, and three days later, he lost control of his bladder and was peeing on his bed. I also noticed that he wasn't pooping (ostipation) for more than 4 days. He was also licking and having problems breathing, so I put a humidifier in the room and his breathing got better. On 5th day, he succumbed to uncontrollable seizure that lasted almost 10 minutes - I took him to the vet on the onset, and gave him an injection to calm him down (maybe some sort of tranquilizer). Went back home and he was still having the same episode but less violently. Then the seizure kicked in again immediately and his eyes was wide open and I could see a small bloody vein on one of his eyes - I got the feeling that he lost his sight because he was gazing into space. I thought his blood pressure was through the roof. The seizure stopped and he died immediately. I am still puzzled and want to know what happened to him. His memory lingers and will always be in my heart. What do you think ?

    • @DrRuthRoberts
      @DrRuthRoberts  7 років тому

      I'm so sorry to hear about your cat. Yes CKD can cause seizures when severe, once the waste products go too high. I've also seen pets in the final stages start to seize when we begin IV fluids.

    Hello Dr. Ruth Robert's,
    We recently took our 7 year old dog to the vet due to loss of appetite over a few days and vomiting by the 4th day. We did blood work and were told he has kidney problems. We were told that with his breed this is common, he is a golden retriever/chow/rottweiler. The vet recommended that we give him the renal dog diet food, but we are having trouble even getting him to eat that. The only other option the vet mentioned was a kidney flush, but said it was a temporary fix and it is quite expensive. I've been very worried and concerned, What is a dogs life span with these problems? Should the vet have offered anything else? Such as medications etc? Seems like this came on very suddenly, he been a pretty healthy dog otherwise.
