Strongly recommend Tournament Grounds for this deck. It basically functions as an untapped Mardu triome for any deck that focuses on knights and equipment (which are the bread and butter of this deck) and costs only 13 cents.
I ran this deck super fun!It was one of my favorites. Mitch you should do a more pricey version of this deck for that option who don't mind breaking the bank a bit, if possible of course.
This used to be one of my favourite Commander decks to bring to FNM, but I have since moved on to using Korvold, Fae-Cursed King. The problem was that I played Syr Gwyn, Hero of Ashvale too often and everyone there kind of caught onto the strategy after a while. Although to anyone watching this video and interested in building Syr Gwyn, I have some helpful tips to add: - Try to not to go nuts on WHITE cards in this deck. I've rebuilt this deck time after time and one reoccurring problem I end up with is TOO MUCH WHITE! This is really bad in both instances of colour screw and mana screw. Also, white's just really bad at making its own mana in general. Instead it has to rely mostly on artifacts and lands to do so. - When everything in the Multiverse looks like a nail, sometimes you just need a Colossus Hammer. As your deck's first upgrade, I would recommend swapping out Vorpal Sword for Colossus Hammer. Vorpal Sword requires a LOT of Black mana for its casting cost, its equip cost (excluding Gwyn's Equip Knight {0} ability), and activated ability. Colossus Hammer's just better in general because it costs one mana (of any colour) to cast, has Equip {8} (which can be worked around with Syr Gwyn), and gives the equipped creature +10/10! The downside is that it loses flying, but considering that you're going to want to smash your opponents' faces with this thing, it's a small price to pay. - What's better than one hammer...? TWO HAMMERS!! If you have a chance to use Masterwork of Ingenuity to clone Colossus Hammer, do it! If you can equip both copies to Syr Gwyn, definitely DO IT! And if you can swing, go for it! It's hilarious! Trust me, I've done it before. Turn 1 Sol Ring + Colossus Hammer + Masterwork of Ingenuity (copying Colossus Hammer) + equipping both to Syr Gwyn, making her a 25/25 and swinging away at my opponent for instant Commander overkill damage never felt so satisfying. If not, completely evil. - There are lots of expensive upgrades out there like Steelshaper's Gift, Stoneforge Mystic, etc, but for as helpful as they appear, they can also hinder your plan. What do these cards have in common? They reveal which cards you're searching your library for. Magic is a game where a lot of information is normally hidden from view, so more budget-friendly options like Diabolic Tutor keep your game plan a secret. - The Brawl deck this card originally comes in also includes a copy of Knights' Charge. Not only would I not recommend it for a Voltron version of Syr Gwyn, but I wouldn't recommend it for a Knight tribal build either. While it's easy to cast at just {1}{W}{B}, the activated ability to sacrifice it to return all of your Knights from the graveyard to the battlefield is too much at {6}{W}{B}. - Lastly, Haunted Plate Mail is a good equipment card to consider using in this deck. For {4}, you are getting what is essentially an equipment that has an early version of Reconfigure. If you control no creatures, (like after a Wrath of God) you can pay {0} to turn Haunted Plate Mail into a 4/4 body. Anyways, if someone here finds this info helpful, thanks! I'm glad to help.
My Syr Gwin deck was the first commander deck I built, and it is my pride and joy. I built it around abusing the free equip costs on multiple knights. Cards like blinding powder, heartseeker, and paradise mantle all get really powerful when you have 3-5 knights and can equip for free. While the deck is quite aggressive the main wincon is using surestrike trident in combination with power boosting equipment for a direct damage win. If you equip all your equipment onto one creature and then I unattach the trident you effectively use one creature to hit for the combined damage of all your equipment. Then you repeat this process with all of your knights for a combo kill.
I love my Syr Gwyn deck. It is such a worthwhile experience to build her as it takes so much deck building skill to balance equipment to put on Syr Gwyn, low-cmc knights to provide a board presence early game, higher cmc finishers, other card draw elements to enhance endurance if Syr Gwyn dies, removal/interaction, and ramp. I feel like I am close to that after 5 years of tweaks. Some of my favorite cards are (not many these are necessarily budget, but are great for people looking for upgrades): - Forging the Tyrite Sword (for ramp + get your best equipment, a turn 3 forging is excellent value) - Akiri, Fearless Voyager - Battle Angels of Tyr - Dowsing Dagger (ramp + equipment) - Nahiri, heir of the Ancients - Any 3 mana rock that can produce 2
I was literally just looking at this card last week for some Voltron shenanigans but was blanking on a budget list. Thanks for swooping in and saving the day on that ;) looking forward to trying the list out
I actually have a deck built around her that I've been thinking of tweaking lately. Thanks for uploading this video bc there are a couple of cards I have that I never thought to add to it tbh! Thanks Mitch for doing what you do. Definitely helped me out with deckbuilding ideas
There is probably a combo-tastic way to build Syr Gwyn, with creature type changers (like "Maskwood Nexus", "Conspiracy" and/or "Amorphous Aye") In combination with "Mask of Immolation" or "Mortarpod" there is probably a infinite sacrifice combo somewhere
Great deck tech as usual!! :-) Two additional cards I would strongly recommend for the deck: - Vorrac Battlehorns ($0.34), equipped to Syr Gwyn is the same as giving the commander unblocklable since she has already has menace. - Tournament Grounds ($0.08) -- One of the best land for the deck.
Thank you Mitch. I have Gwyn as the Commander for a Knight & Swords Tribal. It's not a voltron deck, but includes the entire Swords of X and Y that are before ONE. It's not meant to be competitive, and I'm trying to have it be where it's an equipment deck with Knight Purist Tribal. It is hard to balance this kind of deck that technically has two separate identities and keeping a straightforward wincon with it all working together.
I built a lovely Syr Gwyn deck with a goal of drawing as many cards off her ability when she comes into play. I did this by using a lot of Living Equipment type cards. Hence saving on cards while getting dumb equipped bodies to swing with. Alas no room for Sunforger because the cards it would normally fetched got replaced by ones that played better with Path of Mettle. Also got Tiana in the deck as she should play amusingly with the dump equipments, the equipment creatures, and a couple of interaction auras. And plan B is still voltron with Syr Gwyn, the board is empty, and there's just all these equipments and a haste effect just laying around still.
At just barely over a dollar you can also get a Nettlecyst (which gives you +1/+1 for each artifact and enchantment you control) and Trailblazer’s Boots (non-basic landwalk)! Both immensely powerful in any equipment deck 😵💫
if you see this, you should consider this idea for a deck tech sometime: mishra claimed by gix (or tamer of mak fawa) deck elemental tribal. i havent seen any content regarding rakdos elementals, but the other day i finished my mishra goblins deck and had the revelation that elementals would work much better. the new rakdos mishras are really spiky and elementals play better with that, i think. also, goblins is so overplayed, a budget rakdos deck built around elementals would be easier, imo... do or dont, i think it would be a really cool concept though! thanks for all the content!
Surprised Swords to Plowshares isn't in the deck. It got reprinted in dominaria remastered (.55 cents as of this comment*) Also I'm surprised the duals from dominaria isn't in the deck as well? It's such a good deck nonetheless.
This is an okay budget deck but it stalls as soon as one creature has some form of protection. My lifegain deck was able to easily beat it and this deck even had a near perfect hand while my life gain deck did not. It's fine against one on one games, but this has no survivability in a multiplayer game.
Damn Magic is actually cheap right now for some powerful EDH Decks. Like Wizards sucks but , this is one slightly okay thing. Sorry about your collection being worthless right now , just hold it for 10 years ok.
I built Syr Gwyn... The most boring commander ever... Build her right and you one shot everyone, disembled it after 2 games after have won at turn 6 both times. And it was budget...
Thanks Mitch for giving this card some support.
Strongly recommend Tournament Grounds for this deck. It basically functions as an untapped Mardu triome for any deck that focuses on knights and equipment (which are the bread and butter of this deck) and costs only 13 cents.

This was very useful, thanks man !
Amazing tips I love this deck and can't wait to build more on it. My new obsession!
Thank you so much I’m building both of these decks lol
Syr gwyn is my favorite commander! I've built quite the deck around her myself so it is very interesting seeing your take on it, Mitch.
2:11 First up, of course! 😊
My Syr Gwin deck was the first commander deck I built, and it is my pride and joy.

This commander was the first one I ever built. Full knight deck🥰
I'm happy to see you cover this commander as this will be my first one I tried to build on my own and compare my build to yours. Thank you mitch
I actually have a deck built around her that I've been thinking of tweaking lately. Thanks for uploading this video bc there are a couple of cards I have that I never thought to add to it tbh! Thanks Mitch for doing what you do. Definitely helped me out with deckbuilding ideas
This is my personal favorite commander and the one that I have the most invested into. Finally glad you're showing her some love!
There is probably a combo-tastic way to build Syr Gwyn, with creature type changers

So glad to see our goodest boy Wayfarer's Bauble back in the opening slot!
Thank you Mitch. I have Gwyn as the Commander for a Knight & Swords Tribal. It's not a voltron deck, but includes the entire Swords of X and Y that are before ONE. Thank you Mitch however I did notice no Colossus Hammer in the deck. Ok I'll blame Eddie.
Perfect timing! I was going to build around this commander for my birthday!
I was literally reworking my syr gwyn deck. You are brilliant.
Yay! I've been waiting for this deck tech for years!
I built a lovely Syr Gwyn deck with a goal of drawing as many cards off her ability when she comes into play. I did this by using a lot of Living Equipment type cards. Man this brawler commander came out a while ago, surprised there wasn’t a deck tech sooner.
It's my girl 😲 not my first commander or first deck I started, but the first deck I really put energy into and rounded out. She's still ole faithful.
A guy from my playgroup has a syr gwyn deck, and it really rocks. Good to see a budget option xD
My first commander! I dropped it after needing to sell a bunch of my staples, but it was always fun to play
At just barely over a dollar you can also get a Nettlecyst (which gives you +1/+1 for each artifact and enchantment you control) and Trailblazer’s Boots (non-basic landwalk)! Both immensely powerful in any equipment deck 😵💫
I used Syr Gwyn years ago, and it was just brutal
Looking forward to this. I’ve got a Syr Gwyn deck that doesn’t seem to gel so this might help!
Eyy glad your finally making video about this card
Thanks. Wanted to build around her and now I don't have to use the lump of gray matter in my head.
Colossus hammer would be a great addition.

I Love syr Gywn, Knight tribal with sunforger package FTW , I have won quite a few games with her.
Surprised Swords to Plowshares isn't in the deck. It got reprinted in dominaria remastered (.55 cents as of this comment*)
Also I'm surprised the duals from dominaria isn't in the deck as well?
It's such a good deck nonetheless.
I did too but all the fetches target basics so maybe the dominaria duals are a little slow
This was my 3rd commander deck I ever made. Was pretty dece but didn't survive the test of time for me, sadly.
Definitely need to build this deck
Whenever I watch a commander's quarters video. "No sol ring?"
I once used this deck to voltron up my phyrexian crusader. It has now been locked away.
Sir Gwyn is one of my best performing and least played decks.
Cool deck, i wiil add a sol ring
Very cool!
Mitch can I post my moxie field list of this commander? This is literally my favorite commander
Wayfarer's Bauble is back babeeee!!!!
Fun stuff
I will build this deck :D
Surprised there wasn’t more knights
Do Slicer from the Transformers commanders next!!
Finally!!!
Break the bank!
The cards seems ok, but I need to see this in action before believing it will work. People will target me like crazy
How come it says $27 dollars when it cost 100+ to build this deck?
do another one dollar commander deck tech!
This is an okay budget deck but it stalls as soon as one creature has some form of protection. My lifegain deck was able to easily beat it and this deck even had a near perfect hand while my life gain deck did not. It's fine against one on one games, but this has no survivability in a multiplayer game.
Commander damage doesn't care about life gain....once you have 21 damage by a single Commander you lose, regardless of your life total....
Yea voltron is actually a classic counter against life gain
The deck was fine for me, but having your commander at 5 cmc really made it too slow to get going.
Hello. :)
This is cheaper than a MakePlayingCards proxy deck
Damn Magic is actually cheap right now for some powerful EDH Decks. Like Wizards sucks but , this is one slightly okay thing. Sorry about your collection being worthless right now , just hold it for 10 years ok.

So...do you know "Magic the Noah"? Apparently, he isn't a fan of you or is a silly troll or a parody. Either way, I thought you should know.
