A massive fleet of mk1a is a excellent move, but to counter immediate threats and 5 gen fighter delay, we should buy around 3-4 squadrans of Rafael.
All that is good, now HAL has no excuses.
Yes atleast additional 3 squadrons/54-60 units are necessary because india already spended lots of money for buying 36 rafales, training crew & for infrastructure. Operating only 36 units or 2 squadrons is too less. China has atleast 200 j-20's, 300 j-16 & 220 j-10c with aesa radar, it's like end game for us if we stay with same numbers, here we don't have quantity nor quality(generation of aircraft).

Imagine the later versions of this 97 units , from 50 onwards coming out paired with CATS warrior program.
Tejas mk1a, then Tejas mk2, then Amca mk1, then Amca mk2 and hopefully TEDBF air force version will also be there. Seems like current and next decade will be going to change the face of IAF and fighters will be indigenous.

It's a point defence aircraft. It can counter upcoming aircraft not for deep strike or attack.

GE has a capacity to make only 20 404 engines per year for Tejas! Realistic estimates will be much lower about 12 engines per year.
So this constrains the overal production capacity.
Tejas need to move out of GE404 engines to really scale up production and meet Chinese threat

India should develop twin engine fighter with kaveri engine as single kaveri engine is not enough to generate required thrust but it would be great deal for navy and equivalent to F18 hornet.

83+97=180÷6= 30🤦 HAL will be busy for 30 years @6 Air crafts per year. We will see Tejas Mark 1A, 1B, 1C.....1Z. IAF will never allow HAL to settle down and maximize production.
There tactics would be to delay things and pressurize government to purchase more and more Rafale and Rafale M.
Ultimately Tejas Mark 2 in 2050 and AMCA in 2150.

I think our government is very intelligently taking these steps to show that even if the indigenous development testing and production efforts are engaged and utilised to its fullest extent we will not be able to meet IAF’s requirements well beyond the 2035-2040s. India cannot afford to only limit itself to indigenous technology to make the IAF a modern fighting force by world standards. So foreign aircraft will have to be procured to meet the country’s requirements.

@@abhimanyunath2001 , I think dimensions wise both engine are similar and only we would need modify the air intake design. It would require additional testing and certification but upside is huge and timewise we have plenty of time before 83 Tejas will complete. Moreover with kaveri in plan, redesign and testing certification are going to happen anyway. And we atleast 2 new engines option.

Order hasn't been placed! The MoD has released the tender to HAL, which HAL has to respond to in 3 months with the details of cost, schedule, etc. Only once those are agreed upon with the IAF, will a contract be signed.

It’s high time for Indian government to license Cavery engine technology to private sector and start commercialisation of its technology. The current Cavery dry engine can be modified and used in several other places: marine turbine engine, drones, helicopters, etc!

Well majority Money stays in the economy so it's probably good provided a lot of manufacturing of parts is done by small firms giving them a boost and making the space more lucrative for big firms.
Engine is heart of an aircraft , until heart is indigenous, we may not accept Tejas as Made in India. This govt tedious pace towards engine development is also considerable.
The last is most suited one.

Instead of going for 97 mk1a ,I would have preferred it to be 50 mk1a and go for the remaining mk 2, because by that time mk2 would have been productionised, which is more capable fighter jet
