      You got this! There's a bit of a learning curve but the more furniture you refinish the better you will get.

    Krud Kutter is also non toxic and safe to use. It is one of my goto's. Today's real problem is when people use waxes like Pledge. These waxes contain silicone. Beth I have watched some of your videos where you have put a new finish on tops of pieces. You noticed the orange peel that can happen. Silicone is the cause of that and the stuff penetrates into the wood and hard to get rid of it. Xylene is the best produce to remove silicone from wood. The big problem is it is not friendly to the living. It has to be done outdoors or one big exhaust fan and a respirator. It's a real pain and you don't know for sure if a wax that contains silicone has been used on a piece. I highly suggest natural waxes for wood. Oh as a suggestion the nylon footie over the foam brush is a good subject
    Great info on your steps and herein my dissertation concludes😁😁

      Yes! I should of added that Krud Kutter is non-toxic. Probably the main reason I like working with it. Ma'an has Pledge done a number on old furniture. Sure makes things *look* shiny but what a headache to remove to us that refinish furniture. Silicone is NOT OUR FRIEND! Thanks for the suggestion on doing a quick video on applying a topcoat using the foam brush and foot booty. I'll add that to the list! Thank you for your dissertation! haha!

    I absolutely love your videos. I have learned so much. I have two quick questions: you removed the finish with 150 grit. Do you then go back with 180 and then 220 before you paint? Second question, do you sand in between the coats of shellac? I guess I was thinking like you sand in between top coats.

      Thank you for following me and my work! Love that you are enjoying my tutorials. To answer your questions...I do not go over those areas with a higher grit. I sand with 150 and then that's it before I paint. I do sometimes sand inbetween the coats of shellac if I see dust nubs or a drip mark. Use 400-500 grit and very very lightly sand away those trouble spots. I hope this helps.

    Do you recommend spraying the shellac?
    Your video was very helpful and easy to follow.
    I am refinishing a buffet and painted it white. I used wiped on poly, and it turned yellow. 😮
    You mentioned sanding it and the shellacing it. I skipped the cleaning step. Should I clean it before I sand it?

    • @madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074
      @madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074  8 місяців тому

      For saving time spraying the shellac works wonders. Just make sure you spray two coats. Usually wait 30 minutes in-between coats. It dries super fast. Oh yes applying a poly, which is oil based (I''m assuming it was oil based) will turn yellow over most paints. It's not compatible. I would either seal your painted pieces with a wax or a water based topcoat. I would definitely clean your pieces BEFORE you sand it.

    Thanks for doing this video! I would be interested in what types of brushes or rollers to use and which one is better to use based on a project, what’s the best technique for sanding(is it important to go in one direction?) and do you use anything as a “top coat” when you’re done painting? As you can tell by my questions, I’m a beginner!

    If applying a white stain to pine wood will the color yellow over time?

    • @madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074
      @madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074  3 місяці тому +1

      What will make the pine yellow is the topcoat you put on. It will definitely amber if you use an oil based poly, most likely won’t if you use a water-this based topcoat.

    Can you use primer instead of shellac?

    • @madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074
      @madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074  6 місяців тому +1

      The primer must have shellac in it to block wood tannins and stains of your go that route. I believe Zinsser has a primer with shellac in it.
