  • Clint Barkley (MacMurray) first sees Smoky as a runaway, and drives him back to the ranch where he meets the owner, Julie Richards (Anne Baxter). He is given a job on her ranch, but the head cowhand is doubtful about Clint and fears that since he refuses to talk about himself, he must have some dreadful secret in his past. Clint and Smoky become close to each other, weathering the hardships of Western life and the suspicions of others together, until one day, Smoky tragically vanishes. Will Clint ever see him again?

Hello Melinda S. I thought I saw all the horse movies of the 40s and 50s as a kid. Now I'm 70 plus and discovering so many classics on UA-cam. The youngest I have ever seen Beryl Ives and he had such a beautiful voice. I appreciate all the lovely comments from the viewers who their shared their memories of their dear parents watching this movie with them. ❤ 👍

This was the last movie I seen with my mother way back in 1946 when it first came out. Seeing it today brought back old memories of years ago when I was 11 years old.

I saw this film when I was 9 years old . By the Christmas of that year my father inherited a large landed estate , my sister and I were hoping for ponies for Christmas ; we were not disappointed and I called my pony Smoky .

I watched this for the very first time today on the Western Channel on cable. I ventured over to You Tube hoping to see if it was here because I recorded it on my DVR, but the recording stop approximately sixty seconds before the ending. I know you might say that was the ending with MacMurray releasing him, but I just had to see Smoky through the gate. (Smile) I don't mind admitting being a male and still getting misty at the parade seen. A sad, beaten and worn four-legged animal whose suffered over the years much like a certain human close to my heart. Thank you so much Megalinda S!

I read the book, mentioned it to my mother and she recommended the 60’s film adaptation of Smoky that she enjoyed as a kid, but I gotta admit that I prefer this one over the other one. Way more man & horse moments here compared to the other and the horse looked genuinely possessive of Clint here.

It is very special to me, as I remember when I was little, my Daddy took me to the drive-in movies and this was the movie he chose for me. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, MegalindaS.. You have made me a very happy lady tonight. I saw this movie back when I was a child, I am 55 now. I first saw this movie back in the mid to late 60's. I saw it on the ABC Sunday Night Movie and never saw it again. I always wondered why it never showed up again and have always wanted to watch it again, but, never did, because it never came back on again. I've always been crazy about horses and finally got one about a decade after seeing that movie. I've watched I think every single horse movie that has come out.. The Red Pony, Black Beauty and Comanche, are another of my favorites. Fury, I would watched everyday after school.
I just wanted to say Thank you I am now complete now that I found this movie after decades of looking for it and it feels like forever.. lol

I grew up watching Westerns, the Lone Ranger, on Saturday, the Rifleman, Wagon Train, Bonanza, Gunsmoke too many to name. For anyone who doesn't know your never to get on a horse on the right side, so when Smoky is dragging Clint on the right side that shows how bonded they were. If you love horses there's a man named Dennis Reis who shows how to train horses without breaking their spirit. Great videos.

I like this 1946 film adaptation of Smoky almost but a little bit. The movie is shown on UA-cam Movies, but it's the one with Fess Parker instead of Fred MacMurray and I absolutely like it better than this and the first film adaptation in 1933 by Fox Film Corporation. In fact, what made me think of Smoky, was when I look up the 1966 movie and it was made by 20th Century Fox was based on Will James 1926's book Smoky The Cowhorse, what made me think of the 1966 movie, was UA-cam Movies have the movie on UA-cam but with Fess Parker and I like his take on Smoky better than Fred MacMurray's take on Smoky from 1946. This version may not or may be better than the ones with Victor Jory (1933) and Fess Parker (1966), who knows? But thanks for this version of Smoky anyway. You made my day, man. Way to go!

I LOVE this movie!!! My only disappointment is in the viewing quality of the film. All of the Gary Cooper movies I've watched were beautifully colored and VIVID in clarity and definition. Actually, MOST old movies look really good. It's a shame about this movie.
Watching this movie (and the old black and white Andy Griffiths) should be required in all schools. :) --Sure would be better than the kids watching "Toxic Zombies" and such in school as a reward or for babysitting.

Yeah...I've been looking for at least 10 years. I heard that Turner Classic Movies had it on 4 or 5 years ago; I don't know if Turner's copy was "beautiful" or "crappy." The movie is "Public Domain" now, meaning that it's copyright has expired. I keep hoping, but don't have much expectations of finding any better copies.
I bought a copy advertised as the original movie on DVD off of Ebay 3 years ago, for $20.00. It was poorer quality than this one. Don't waste you money buying it. The seller was "Movie.....)something. I wrote them a nice email just asking if any better copies were available and they didn't bother to answer.
Don't get me wrong...I appreciate you putting this on. At least those who adore this movie can bask in the love and companionship and such that touch our hearts, and release a few tears of joy here and there. :)

William Chapman if a tv series had been made in Yukon, OK in the 70s, you would have seen the same. A quiet, small town. Mostly Czech people at that time. I had to learn how to pronounce the names, having spent my first 13 years in OKC. It was a big change but I ended up loving it. Places like Mayberry existed...even in the 70s. I was welcomed as a Lopez. Not everything is racist.

I looked for this movie. I remembering loving it. But, this is only because we don't see it from the horse's perspective. Not really. 'When I saw him, in the open, as wild as his surroundings'. I knew I" had to take away his freedom, break him, submit him. Too sad after that.

They remade this movie 20 years later with Fess Parker and Hoyt Axton, just saw it on TV, same title and plot.

    Great Movie!
1 Burl Ives is great. If you haven't seen it, Sierra with Burl & Audie Murphy is a must see.
2 Why don't they have sidearms?
3 Did he get the girl in the end?

2021: Beware (Caballos-cheval), “Horses” cost as much as a New~ Baby to~clean and feed, but don’t worry, they don’t run away to college. They might win at the Kentucky-Derby or a local horse race !

Why hasn't anyone posted the same movie with Fess Parker as Clint Barkley?? I much prefer that version than this one. I see that they have borrowed scenes from this movie for the other 'Smoky", but it would be awesome if someone was able to post the other version also, or if possible can someone post a link to the other "Smoky" movie please? Thank you
