I really loved the different perspective of HAVING to learn to get along with and rely on/help neighbors - if you were going to survive. You don't see this in many of the films that have to do with wilderness living. Nice!

This is a great discovery. The characters were all believable, the story is not really typical, it's about kids having to do the job of grownups, and doing it well, even the youngest kid is respected for his intelligence and not treated like a little brat. A good movie, that most people have never heard of, and a rare treat to see a great songwriter showing other talents. I never even knew that Rod McKuen had been in any movies, and he can ride and everything.

Hi there people who watch westerns partially for the riders and horses. Having ridden all my life I'm always catching things like flapping elbows and worst of all, feet shoved into the stirrups all the way to the heel. The FIRST thing I was taught was you keep the ball of your foot on the stirrup. Otherwise, if you're gonna fall your foot gets stuck in the stirrups and you're not going to get yourself out from under a fallen horse. Or dragged. On some westerns I spend a lot of time seeing if actors got their feet right on a horse. It's a pretty big basic safety riding issue.

Saw Rod Mckuen in concert at the Fairfield Halls in Croydon about 1970. He was a very talented composer and wrote some wonderful songs, among which was "Once in a while, love's been good to me". Check out the Sinatra version. Nobody sang it better. Perry Como also had some success with Rod's compositions.

Not a bad movie, actually. Other than Maurine Sullivan's acting (she is sure different than when she played Tarzan's mate, Jane), the movie includes George Winslow as the youngest son. He looks different than I remember him in Mr Scoutmaster but his voice sure is the same. I've always enjoyed Rod McKuen's poems from his albums in the 60s and 70s. I still listen to them, today. The rest of the main actors are pleasantly enjoyable, too. Thumb's UP, 'fer sure...

Then Susan Slade with Connie Stevens and the 3rd was Parrish which had Connie Stevens again as well. Then along came Rod McKuen. Love his song writing, his voice his poetry. Would have loved to bum around the world with him even just as pals. Be safe. Be happy.

My reply was to Steve Burstein, who misquoted the song. When we reply on UA-cam to the original comment poster, there's no @name applied to our comment. When we reply to a respondent, the YT system applies the @name, just as your comment did to me. You'll notice there's none of that on my first comment in this thread > it was to the original commenter, Steve, as my comment logically shows with the correct lyrics of the song. You said nothing about "wagons in the sun", Steve did.

Most of the old westerns have portrayed all the men of the old west as drunkards first & husbands & fathers last. They wouldn't go all that way and leave their families in the street of a town they just came into for a drink. Just wasn't this way and kids didn't talk back.

    *Thinking out loud*
1958 - must have been a special year.
In this film, several examples are given that brings to mind the points of:
"Assumptions and Judging Others, without facts, an example of "Lower Mindedness or Adolescent Ego-Mindedness"
Often those whom do this call themselves Religious and even Christian - (think about it)
Personally, I give greater value to the examples and teachings of Jesus, and he made some strong points about "judging others" and "the use of Religious venues - for profiting, money lenders, and the social arrogance - of some judgemental in their Religious affiliations and arrogant in their social-economic positions.
These attitudes require others acceptance for validation - they can be diffused by one's Conscious application of self-worth, refusal to cooperate in judgemental attitudes/gossip/behaviors - recognition of the value of each, their soul, and the fact each hold equal value in the eyes of God.
Consciously recall the Empathy shown in so many examples in the words and acts of Jesus.
One may not subscribe to the Christian faith, yet the entire concept of what is written of Jesus truly provides examples of an ethical and mature balance of mind, of living, and of personal growth, that supersedes any personal conviction on belief and/or of any Religion.
It most certainly is key to the Christian faith and any Religious Christian Denomination.
When situations arise, it is most worthy to really a wise point of advice: "Don't react, rather respond, and often the more appropriate response is - none at all".
One need merely ask self: "What would Jesus do or advise in this situation?" This simple thought, when applied, is a most reliable point for the greater value of personal maturity and Mature Minded Wisdom.
Even those whom practice this can routinely realize the challenge we each face in "avoiding Assuming and Judgemental thoughts/behaviors" -
One must have facts, truths in information, by which they build their knowledge base for their own decisions and actions. (Opinions of others largely emit a foggy haze and vial odor that creeps across this land and causes a toxic paranoia in the minds of man. Through the promotion of this, the mass majority are held in a state of weakness, that allows forvthe host of this fog to further manipulate and guide these minds to predictable acts, and those are toward the goals of the host and those goals are to continue to separate the masses, keep a simmering of hate, fears, prejudices, and distractions with produced dramas - all while the host gains greater profits, greater freedoms in access to more venues to do the same, legislated loop holes and options that allow for the means to pressure the public using their known weaknesses, egos, and allows them to use the very similar/same type of acts the Jesus once threw the Money-lenders out of the synagogue over.
The 2 most powerful tools, with which the mass public can/are controlled with are:
    Information and Money
The controlling owner of All of these 2 tools in the USA and Western World is Rothschild -
Owns ALL of the MS News Media and the Federal Reserve
The family made their way to the position of wealthiest in the world by being "Money Lenders/Exchangers", and in greater part the "go to source for War Loans" both sides - winner pay all plus trophies - oil fields, natural resources.
(Now, owns News Media and Loans money for Wars - think about that)
Opinions, Commentaries, Editorials - 95% 9f all World News Information is presented with a point of persuasion, based on current events, for the purpose of building l cohesive public thought, allowing the host to gain favor for any given subject they desire and that is for: further control and financial gains.
These are hard facts and philosophical facts - the points of fact can each be found in public domain - Google subject
A point worth realizing is - through such loop holes the host can literally circumvent the Constitution, (has/will/is)
    *Think about that*
There is value in knowing how hearing information is stored in the human brain - and the only buffer is consciously applying thought to discredit information that is not "known facts"
"The Psychology of Advertising applied to News Media" - they operate without any *Rules/Standards of Ethics or measure of Restitution.*
*THINK ABOUT THAT* and make an effort to change your habits of listening and/or bring a change in ownership -
Rothschild and partners are neither citizens, nor residents of the USA.
*MS News Media, including the AP*, the *Federal Reserve* and Central Banks, and *Source for War Loans*
Please verify and Please share - you have power when paired with truths and numbers.

Here we see them at 4:35 going through a large mud hole and it is the only mud hole within a hundred mile radius.....brilliant. Just makes more sense to go around it but then where is the challenge. That kind of shit just pisses me off....total ignorance.

At 5:00-06 they could have gone around that mud hole there was plenty of room why do these movies have wagons getting bogged down in a deep mud hole when theres all the room to avoid it, not realistic, its just a movie but these things bug me, when its so obvious, at least they could show this in an area with hills on all sides then there would be a reason to go through a mucky mud hole and get all stuck and filthy dirty,
But a good movie starting out.
