Awesome overview video as always Brian. Thanks!
My pleasure!
Your grey hair is looking GREAT!
Lol!🤣
I love the shirt! Also smartthings is pretty awesome so far. Especially with matter and thread devices.
Thanks Cap!
I started off with Smartthings, But over the last couple of years, I have slowly migrated over to HomeAssistant. Smarrthings and comparable platforms really are aimed at less tech savvy folk, which is a shame because it limits so much about what a smarthome can do. HomeAssistant really has grown up to be a powerful platform!
It really is disappointing how limited smartthings is
I have 108 devices, Ive played with home assistant, but I still find no use for it. Not saying others dont, but its not needed.
I agree and disagree. I agree that ST is much more limiting than many other platforms- especially HA. But I also think it has enough flexibility for the majority of consumers that want to get into the Smart Home market. I don’t think “Super Advance” automations would be utilized by many people, considering the possibilities already available on ST routines - especially if you utilized virtual switches and integration with Google Home or Alexa. You can develop pretty nice advanced automations.
When ST migrated to Edge and stopped Groovy, I was worried bc many of my “Advanced” automations were on Webcore. Turns out ST has stepped up their Routines enough where I was able to replicate 99% of them using ST’s native Routines.
@@ONI1013. I've been building a python project that allows GPT-4 to control my home using HAs API, so I'm a little beyond smart things automations 😅.
@@SimplyElectronicsOfficial Good for you 👍🏼. I would not expect you to go back. Was just commenting that not everyone needs to migrate to HA
Hi, love your content and find them to be very informative. Can I ask you what Edge driver you are using for your bulbs that show the circadian option. It's the one thing I really miss with the demise of the IDE and SmartApps. Thanks in advance.
Yeah! So mine first showed up on my Wiz bulbs that I'll be showing in our unboxing on the 1st of July. That's not even on an Edge Driver at the moment, but others will be showing up as we go.
My Hue bulbs have the Natural Lighting option in the list of scenes when I use the Blue Yeti driver for Hue LAN control. That works to give you circadian lighting options too. :)
Thanks Brian.
You bet! Thank you sir!
Cool.. thanks bro
Gotta love it!
All you have to do to get Google speakers to make notifications with SmartThings is make a virtual switch in SmartThings. Then make a household routine in the Google Home app that is triggered by when that virtual switch turns on. I have been doing it for a few months now and it works flawlessly.
Yep! Great method!
@@AutomateYourLife don't forget my shout out in your next video. LOL
Thanks!
Thank you!
It's interesting, by Smartthings becoming simpler, it seems to make you want to search for ways to see the more complex and detailed information. Almost like browsing the YAML in Home Assistant. I just found it interesting that people will say home assistant needs to much tinkering, but the API Browser you featured encourages people to dedicate more time and tinker more :). We've come full circle.
Nice to see SmartThings has now brought in Hue Scenes and Groups, a feature Home Assistant has had for several years. It is definitely good for the end users and the industry in general to see this functionality.
Matter is coming along well now. I just hope they introduce Energy Monitoring soon, as that is one thing I am really missing from Matter.
Oh, little side note. That Hue Scenes and Groups is a custom edge driver made by a community member. So ST STILL hasn't brought those in...lol
@@AutomateYourLife Thought it was too good to be official, but at least it is there, even if from the community :)
The virtual device videos you did helped for adding google home announcements. Smarthings should make that announcements standard.
No kidding hey? I'm glad it's working so well for you!
Does edge drivers for philips Hue products, allow you to trigger routines based on Lux leveles of the motion sensors?
Are there other ways to do so without a Hub? Thanks!
I've had a driver for a while that allowed me to use lumens. :)
Good video. I had a Gen 1 Smarthings Hub, but using it doubled all the entries in Google Assistant and I never added smart devices that I needed that weren't able to connect to my WiFi network.. I have not incorporated sensors into my setup; just outlets, lights, thermostat, HiFi, and speakers. With the new Google Assistant Editor there may be new automations which would justify the addition of the Hub.
You'd still end up with duplicates, sadly! Doesn't matter how you do it (hub or not)...soooo :(
They dont even make and sell the hubs anymore, only the matter enabled smart stations. You could forgo google altogether and that solves your problem automatically. You do know google is litterally one of the worst possible companies to trust, right?
as always Brian, very informative video. off topic but can somebody recommend an outdoor smart vibration sensor that works with Alexa?
YOLINK LoRa Smart Vibration Sensor
@@gerryf7015 i checked on that one, indoor use only
@@gerryf7015 Just bought one...
What's the use case?
Merci pour votre travail sa ma pas mal aider dans mais choix
Pas de vidéo sur smartthings en France
I'll try to help as I can! Good luck!
How do you enable dark mode on the app? I cannot find it!
Any edge drivers for flic? Don't want to get the flic hub! Would love a more general rundown/comparison of the popular smart buttons and getting them into smartthings!
I'm actually working on a smart button comparison, but it won't be just ST. :) It takes a lot, so gimme a bit.
No Edge Drivers for Flic, and you won't find Bluetooth only devices going direct into ST anytime soon.
@@AutomateYourLife fair, any zigbee buttons would definitely get my attention!
Think you forgot to add some links in the description Brian :)
Yessir!
What version of the Smartthings app are you running? Latest Android version here (Norway) is 1.8.01.22 and it does not show driver info on the hub page like in the video, only information.
App info says: 1.8.01.22 here too. Android too. Soooo, it could be related to country Sandor.
Can u connect smart hub to your wifi mobile network instead of a router? Plus Samsung cctv is there a wireless camera with real time notifications sent to you when outside to your mobile if cctv or window sensors are triggered?
You could try the mobile network but you might not like the response when the internet is needed for a function.
Aeotec sells the 360 camera which you can use to record on ANY event in your smart home :)
Googles new script editor looks very promising for those in their ecosystem. It allows you to send voice or media commands to speakers now
Some of it is good! Some of it...🤷
For Smart home Hubs that require power. I was wondering if you could power a hub through the usb port on a router/modem? Instead of plugging it into a wall outlet
You can sometimes, but it depends on the hub and the power level of your USB port
Hey Brian! Can you do a video on Google's new script editor please?
Yep, just learning how to use it properly myself!
@@AutomateYourLife nice! I just made my first multi layered voice activated automation to turn on 8 cameras and turn off 22 lights when I leave the house. You would think this could be done within the app right? Well, leave it to Google to allow 7 Wyze cameras to be able to be turned on with a "turn on all the cameras" routine but NOT the Google Nest Cam! Their own product! Seriously unreal.
I’ve done a lot of Google (And Alexa) announcements based on automations on ST. A lot of it is built through virtual devices running routines within the Google or Alexa app itself once triggered. What is this ST Google Script editor and how is that better?
I was a smarthings user for many years. Loved the simplicity but hated the unreliability nothing but outages and issues. Then got to the point where any new device added completely broke the entire house. Finally I decided about 2 months ago to jump ship to hubitat. Love it not nearly as simple and still figuring it out but have created some pretty complicated automations that smarthings just couldn't do. Definitely miss the smarthings app
There's good and bad on both!
Have they fixed the wemo plugs? The newest version I could never connect but I think it’s matter
I don't think wemo has a matter plug, do they? And I think this would be more on WeMo than ST. The drivers are there for companies to use, but they gotta still build it into their devices to use them!
@@AutomateYourLife my mistake! They have a thread enabled plug but seems they are stepping away from matter, looks like its back to zwave for me!
I'm using the BlueYeti Hue driver and I can't see the circadian rhythm option. Is that because I'm not using the standard SmartThings Edge driver or is that because I'm in New Zealand and circadian lighting isn't available in my region?
Hey Will, I believe it'll come to that Edge Driver, BUT...you don't need it to.
Just create the Circadian Rhythm scene in any of the lights or groups you'd like in the Hue app. :)
Does smart thing station exposes Samsung tv functions to matter ? Like can I control my TV function like volume,HDMI input etc with Apple home app ? (Because the station is matter enabled )
Not at this time
So i dont have the circadian lighting option for my lights? Is there something special i need to do/enable? Theyre Hue color bulbs. And where would i find the blinking option?
So use this video: ua-cam.com/video/D_uwxD_9-9s/v-deo.html and get the Hue integration that's shown there. The blinking option is there.
For circadian rhythm, you can wait and it'll start to show soon (depends on the driver used), or with the option I show in that video, just create a scene in the Hue app for the Natural light. Then turn it on. :)
@@AutomateYourLife Thanks! Got it figured out.
Hi does smart things hub work with tuya zigbee sensor?
In general, no. However watch this video and you'll find out how to make many of them work with ST! ua-cam.com/video/D_uwxD_9-9s/v-deo.html
@@AutomateYourLife noted thanks! but I did saw that they can select tuya services via in app.
Does Smarthing also work with other brands besides Samsung, for example LG....
Yep! You can download the app and take a look at options. Just use the way I showed in this video!
Hi Brian complete novice here from GB🇬🇧 I've just had the Internet installed (BT) i have the Samsung smart tv, the Samsung watch 5 and Samsung phone , due to ill health im having to auto mate my bungalow, can you list me what i can buy next, like do i get an Alexa or something similar, will i need a hub? Lightbulbs, plug in sockets, can't rewire the house because I'm renting, i watch your videos a lot, and its prompted me to take a computer course, but there's a waiting list of 12 weeks and i want to make a start with the bungalow, many thanks Heather, ps i trust your Judgement what to buy and what goes with what, sorry to be a pain.😳
Hey Heather - I think this SmartThings system is about right for you. You can get lots of smart bulbs (Zigbee) that will work in a rental and the app isn't very hard to use. I'd get the SmartThings Station if they're selling it yet in GB. If not, you can get the Aeotec Smart Home Hub! Then you can some smart plugs that work with SmartThings. Aeotec sells a number of Zigbee ones. Stay tuned cause I have a great video about Aeotec coming and that'll work really well for you!
I use the smarthings motion sensor to turn on lights, i found that if i use a light group then the automation is not local, if i add the individual spotlights then the automation runs locally, do you know if there is a worksround to this or if its been fixed? Just seeks like strange behaviour..
That is strange!
You know...can you let me know if they are different bulbs from different vendors?
Also, can you let me know if they're on different hubs? I don't want to assume you only have 1.
Do you notice a big delay?
@@AutomateYourLife they are all IKEA tradfri zigbee bulbs with the genuine smarthings motion sensor all on one hub, I take it this is not normal behaviour then 😀
There's a noticeable delay when using the light group, almost as if it's going to the cloud and coming back again, with the individual ones it's almost instant.
@@marct5211 I don't think it is. Something odd there. I'll have to try a few myself!
Are you following any news about Govee being added back to smartthings?
Actually, Govee was never "in" SmartThings. But I'm on them ALL the time about it.
@@AutomateYourLife I remember the IDE workaround that use to work and now I have the H198 tv lights that I can't automate when I turn my TV on and off at night. Real world problems here now lol 😂.
Hey that's a real problem! I feel you just the same. :(
So still no way to use old groovy custom DTH drivers with the new IDE pseudo replacement
I wonder if chat GPT or another AI could be used to convert the old custom device handlers to edge drivers
I'd say the edge drivers are already better in a lot of cases. If you have a few that you're waiting on for a DTH replacement, I'd just ask the developers on the community boards
I had Smartthings devices a a V3 hub, with Smartthings WiFi, for a long time until my device count outgrew Samsung. And I looked many times and found that Alexa routines gave me more granularity than Smartthings Automations. What today is an advantage in Smartthings Automations that is is not in Alexa routines? I ask, because Alexa routines allows me to merge non-Smartthings devices into my options.
Multiple conditions is the biggest benefit. There are many additional trigger types in ST too.
Hi Everyone, Years ago SmartThings had a way for me to get a continuous alert every minute if a door or window remained open. That feature went away. Can anyone point me in a direction as to how to make this happen today (02/2024)? I
Hey Martin, I think what you could do here is...
It's a bit of a loop you have to create. Ugly...cause it's a SmartThings limitation now.
If the window's open -> Set a Virtual Switch to 1
If the window's closed -> Set the Virtual Switch to 0
If the Virtual Switch is 1 -> Wait X minutes -> Set Virtual Switch to 0
If the Virtual Switch is 0 AND Window is Open -> Set Virtual Switch to 1
That SHOULD loop...but SmartThings won't love it. I believe they try to stop loops like this.
@@AutomateYourLife Thanks for the reply. I might dive in and give this a try. In the mean time I discovered a really cool company YOLINK and their hardware and software are really good. I bought their hub and a door open/close sense and the app is REALLY well designed and it leads you thru the process is a very logical way. The devices use a frequency that gives them a very reliable distance of 1/4 Mile. The feature I want is built where it automatically reminds you if a door or a window remains open. So I may just use SmartThings only for lighting and switch over to motion and door open/close sensors with YOLINK
I need a solution. I'm paralyzed from the neck down and cannot use remote controls nor cell phones. I recently purchased an Echo Dot 5 - my daughter-in-law installed the Alexa app and the Samsung Smart Things App onto her cell phone and now I'm able to operate my 1-year-old Samsung Smart TV, (neither the smart things app nor Alexa app are available in the download store on my TV). By operate I'm talking basic functions, i.e. power on/off, volume up/down, changing channels.
Is there a way I can access the apps loaded on my TV? I have Netflix, Amazon prime TV, and a slew of others but I have to have someone access those for me. This would greatly increase my independence!
Either way, thank you and/or anyone who might have some good advice for me!
God bless you!
Hi Joseph,
I think there are a few solutions we can go with here.
SwitchBot has a button pressing solution that could actually sit on the remote and press the buttons you'd like.
Or potentially, you can map buttons to the IR Blaster on their Hub 2. That can mimic button presses to your TV if it uses IR 😃
The other option is a fire TV Cube. That's the best choice, honestly
@@AutomateYourLife I should have mentioned that I'm bedridden and completely helpless when laying down. When in my wheelchair, (haven't sat in that in over a month and a half due to a pressure sore and a broken femur) I can sort of use the TV controller. If someone puts the remote on my lap, (there is a towel across my lap that prevents things from falling off my leg or between my legs when I'm in my wheelchair) and I'm able to manipulate my hand using my shoulder, (all the while watching what my hand is doing) and pray that I'm touching the correct button. I can't feel anything either, so I don't know if I'm actually pressing anything, if that makes sense.
I don't have money to buy another TV. I just bought this one brand-new last year. I'm also hoping for a way to use my Echo Dot 5 to make & answer phone calls using my voice over internet protocol telephone, (they call it a landline, but it's not). Amazon no longer carries/makes the Connect which was the go between device used to do just that.
Sorry if I'm flooding your comment section…
Mode changes can be made in the app, but new ones cannot be created.
Correct, which is why I think the Browser API I showed today is so great :D
@@AutomateYourLife Agreed!
Is it possible to use siri with smartthings?
No not really. I haven't seen a good way to do it
Hey Brian, will you be covering the issue with Amazon shutting a user out of their account and therefore control of their smart home due to a racism claim by a driver who misheard an automated verbal doorbell? You're not appearing on my feed for some reason and I've gone back a phew months in your content and couldn't find anything.
I think lots has been said. I wasn't planning a full video on it, because it's hard to dispute any of what's been said. Really a very frustrating thing that Amazon did there and I think if they do it again, I'll come out very aggressively about it.
Looks very like an expensive version of smartlife..
Lol the app?
Smartlife or g.t.f.o 😁
My virtual switch is discovered by Mrs A but it does not show in the list of available things when I try to do a routine in Alexa with this switch. AnyIdea?
