Mad Hatter was a good character. I’m amazed he didn’t enjoy playing him.
They definitely had some good actors to portray villains..
I can imagine that the studio did threaten him. This would have been his 3rd out of 4 appearances as The Mad Hatter in the Batman series. My guess is that they got Burgess Meredith (Penguin) and Cesar Romero (Joker) to talk him into doing it. Both actors had been in Hollywood since the 30's and they were about the same age as David Wayne.
It’s interesting how most actors and actresses of the day wanted to be on Batman, yet David Wayne was forced to play The Mad Hatter on the show. Very interesting to hear. Thanks for the information Rick, I hope you’re doing well. Keep up the great work and take care!
Of course, when I read the title, I thought you were going to talk about Burgess Meredith as the Penhuin. My Mother was a Script Supervisor on the series and she had told me that Burg had struggled to stop smoking years before, and when the part of the penguin required him to smoke, he was not happy. In fact, he would cough so much during filming, he would cover by making that (now signature) quaking sound.
Funny to think he had been forced to play The Mad Hatter because Major stars lined up to play Villain's on Batman.
Or at least get a "batrope" scene.
Indeed! The guest appearances from the windows were the result of so many celebrities at that time begging to make an appearance on the series.
That's what I thought. Stars couldn't wait to get a spot on Batman. Was I wrong??
Or even a window cameo.
Mad Hatter was mad!
I find it amusing that there are many instances of actors hating what is considered by fans to be their most famous/beloved roles. Two that come to mind are Alec Guinness and Harrison Ford, both for Star Wars.
Clint Howard is one. (Ron's younger brother) He said that he just doesn't get Star Trek, and yet half his mail is about Star Trek from the one episode he appeared on.
During that time period(66-68) I was 13 to 15 year old. Everybody make it home in time to see Batman, it was top topic amoung friends. Consider that it was competing with discovery and distractions(puberty) at the time and it's just a very active time of life for most of us. We (me and my friends) usually saw all the Batman episodes. The Mad Hatter doesn't stand out. But Yvonne Craig episodes, those I remember!
I wish Roddy McDowall could have reprised his role as the Bookworm, but he was probably busy preparing for Planet of the Apes. Later on he did the voice of the Mad Hatter for Batman: The Animated Series.
Does anyone know if McDowall is the only actor to play more than one character in more than version of the show ?
Great work as usual. David Wayne was one of those theatre purists who thought that TV acting was not acting. Television was considered "assembly line work."
Movies, however, were considered prestige. The studios at that time still had enough clout to keep you out of the movies if you didn't "play the game."
He must have modified his stance about television in the 1970's as he had regular roles in two series in that decade: "Ellery Queen" (as Ellery's father) and "House Calls" (as a senior doctor).
@@josephosheavideos3992Time changes things. Came a time there were more opportunities in television than in theater. Actors have to eat. He was at the age where he did appreciate the comfortable living a television series can provide.
It's a form of evolution. When movies came out, stage actors looked down on movie actors, and then movie actors looked down on TV actors. That's why we had Captain Kirk instead of Captain Pike in the original Star Trek TV series.
@@josephosheavideos3992 Don't forget Matt Houston!
Mad Hatter was as "Mad as a Hatter." Thanks Rick Nineg!
Leave it to you, Mr Nineg to have endless facts about the era of tv gone by.
Guess John Astin wasn't available to play the Mad Hatter
😂
He would have made a better Mad Hatter than he did the Riddler. (BTW, Astin is the only surviving male Batman villain.)
@@emsleywyatt3400wrong Julie newmar, Joan Collins and Lee merriwearther are all still alive.
@@paulbiz8708 Male.
Mad Hatter episodes were a couple of my favs.
I thought I saw every episode. I don't remember this one. Will have to keep my eyes open
And I thought you were saying Contaminated Cow! I figured it out half way through the video.
Me too!😂
So did I. Poor pink cow 😢
That contaminated cowl , courtesy of THE MAD HATTER, tickled me pink
I remember this Mad Hatter episode. I was not aware they made a contaminated cowl toy. That's awesome.
I would guess the toy was made decades after the T.V. series. It says made in China. Most toys in the 1960's came from Japan or USA.
It also says Batman Classic T.V. Series on the package.
As good as David was as Mad Hatter, Jean Hale was an absolute doll.🥰
Can I opt to try and win the table underneath the toy instead? From what I could tell, it looks really cool!
As for the “they forced me” aspect, I get blacklisting, blackmail, and all the other dark things studio heads do to actors for the sake of profit, but ultimately, to me, the decision is still the individual’s. You can still say no. Don’t fear the consequences, use them to make yourself even stronger. Develop your craft in different ways using different means. Be brave and be true to who you are. You’ll discover the greatest character you’ve ever known, yourself.
On a side note, too bad Aunt Harriet wasn’t a super hero. She would’ve been amazing!
Thanks for another awesome video! I learned much! 😁
Like the actresses Weinstein blacklisred, who just disappeared, like Mira Sorvino? Show biz is a corrupt business all right
They could have threatened to not give him other projects if he didn't do this one, so it's not a true "gun to the head" but he might not have had a palatable alternative, like it might have been very destructive to him to say no.
Mad Hatter is nuts!
Vincent Price begged to be a villain! They gave him "Egghead", one of the best villains ever. Victor Buono as "King Tut" was another of the best, non-regular, villains. Some of the top actors of stage, as well as screen, played villains. It was an honor, for most of them. Neither Eartha Kitt, nor Julie Newmar, needed the work, but they did it, and both made "Cat Woman" one of the absolute best villains of any show!
Not a big Batman fan, a bit too campy, but enjoy it more now. Always enjoy "looking behind the curtains"!
The Mad Hatter always seemed like he was a knock off Penguin. Great video.
I liked it when the Mad Hatter opened up his top hat and a pair of eyes would beam out a hypnotic ray into an unsuspecting civilian!
I don't remember that much about the episode. I do remember the cliffhanger image, though. I also remember the Mad Hatter, and the pop up eyes on the top of his hat. I don't particularly recall him being any less dignified, than some of the other villains on the show. He seemed to play his character rather well. At least, he didn't meow or quack & throw exploding penguins.
Twilight Zone "Escape Clause" is also one of my favorites... Had no idea that was David Wayne of Mad Hatter fame. Another great piece of work, Rick!
Mad Hatter
I vividly recall watching this when it came out. The Mad Hatter was quirky…the perfect villain which fit the Batman format.
the mad hatter was another famous batman villian of all time like the joker riddler' penguin' catwoman the clock king and mr freeze.
The Hatter's pronunciation of 'Beeyatmyan' slays me 😂
I like the Mad Hatter episodes and I didn't know this about the Mad Hatter. Thanks for the info, Rick. Plus, I think the Mad Hatter wouldn't survive in this world now no one wears hats anymore..
One of my favorite lines from the Lord Fogg episode, Batman says," This is a ubiquitous, iniquitous, enigma..." (I bet it took several takes to get that to go...)
Did not realize David Wayne was the Mad Hatter. I do remember the Twilight Zone he was in. Pretty cool.
David Wayne that played The Mad Hatter was also on an episode of Banacek, with George Peppard!
I believe this is the first live action appearance of Jervis Tetch as the Mad Hatter. Really fun 2 parter . One of the more really silly episodes. I remember Batman being encased in plaster and surviving because he could hold his breath for a long time.
I loved the Mad Hatter, hope he eventually was proud of it.
David Wayne was an incredible character actor. I also loved his work as the original Digger Barnes on Dallas!
The Mad Hatter (David Wayne) character not wanting to participate in a second episode is news to me. Many Shakespearian-trained actors felt similarly about acting in shows they were in, including Jonathan Fried of "Dark Shadows" fame.
I have the Batman series but never really knew there was only one Mad Hatter 2 part episode. I can't believe the Pink hooded Batman action figure was created. That is totally cool! Good luck to all!
With what's going on in Hollywood today I could see them forcing the actor to play the Mad Hatter.
I would like to point out, when he said "A second one" I don't think he meant that he was unwilling to film the second part of that 2 parter. He was in FOUR episodes.
"The Thirteenth Hat" and "Batman Stands Pat" was the first two parter he was in so the episodes you mention in this video were already his THIRD and FOURTH appearance on the show.
I think what he meant by a second one is a second full story not just a second episode. "The Contaminated Cowl" and "The Mad Hatter Runs Afoul" would have been his second full story in the series but his second episode "Batman Stands Pat" would have already happened a full season earlier. So it's not that he filmed a part 1 and then refused to come back to film part 2. It's that he did one full story as the character and didn't want to come back to do a second story. And given how dumb Batman's pink cowl was even for the campy 60's Batman series I don't really blame him for not wanting to do it.
I don't think they actually forced him though, like the whole holding a gun to his thing, I seriously doubt anything like that actually happened. At most they could threaten his career and make it harder for him to get work later but someone would have been arrested and put in jail if there was an actual threat on his life.
I can see maybe being forced in a threatening way. Hollywood always has been and very much still is dark and shady. But in the other side of it a true actor plays all roll. Nothing should be considered beneath. Playing different characters is the whole point of being an actor. Alot of big names at the time appeared on Batman.
In the first Flash Gordon serial, there's a silly Huge Beast monster, is this the same suit Batman dressed up in to portray a hatched dinosaur?
Mad Hatter - Batman was one of my favorites
I do love the Mad Hatter character, though I tend to call BS on David Wayne's story.
I have a bunch of these figures in the package still that I'm trying to get rid of. Nobody wants them. 😮
Mad Hatter wasn't my fav villain but as a kid I preferred the 'less active' crooks. The Bookworm, Mr. Freeze and even as a 9yo I did enjoy Julie Newmar episodes. The way you spoke I got the impression that there is a single episode out there. Outside of the movie I remember all being Wed/Thurs. The marketing was brilliant for boys, never missed either night.
Mad Hatter may have been an assigned role for David Wayne under the terms of a contract he had with the studio. Those were still common in the mid-sixties. He had rights of refusal, of course, but the studio could have made a deal for him on terms they found favorable enough to pressure him into doing it. He was right in the sense that the show was very silly, but this episode was being filmed before the show had aired so no one knew what an audience would think of it.
Of course, it was a huge hit and people raved… for a while. Then it ran out of steam. You can only sustain a joke for so long. Batman purists detest this version of the character. I loved it, when I was six. I have affection for it for that reason, plus the performances of Frank Gorshin (my personal favorite), Burgess Meredith (who was great in everything he did), Julie Newmar (‘nuff said), and Cesar Romero. All gave compelling and consistently fantastic performances.
The rest were mostly forgettable except for Victor Buono, but they overused that character. The one-note performances of all the “good guy” characters was insufferable after a while, except for Alfred. Alan Napier was fabulous. I am not saying that to fault the other actors in the regular cast. That was the deliberate choice of the producer and his team. That was part of the joke they were telling. It certainly worked. For a bit.
David Wayne used a classic line most actors do when they aren't paid what they believe they're worth. He may not have gotten a piece of the syndication or license of the Mad Hatter character.
Very cool win a figure
We i was kid sat in the batmobie at the auto rame
The Mad Hatter
I know he was a major star at one time even playing Marilyn Monroe's love interest. Something happened to his career? It would be interesting to find out what.
The Mad Hatter was an interesting character, but as a 4 year old when this originally aired, it freaked me out! Great work as always, Rick!
If David Wayne didn’t want to play the Mad Hatter, I’m pretty sure the TV studios had other actors that would’ve stepped up to the plate on a moment’s notice.
MAD HATTER
I recently watched all of these episodes thanks to the blu ray collection! It felt like a small miracle after decades of wondering if they would ever get the rights cleared to release the series at all. Until then, the movie was the only thing from the sixties series available for home release.
When I was a kid, I really liked the Mad Hatter I thought that his hat was cool.
David Wayne played a hilarious role in How To Marry A Millionaire, opposite Marilyn Monroe, both are nearsighted and end up being a couple🤓. When he died in 1994 he was remembered in the best In Memorian clip ever shown at The Oscars, during the 1995 telecast.
The Mad Hatter was one of the best Bat villains. If David Wayne was being compelled to play him, it certainly did not show as his performance was brilliant. Of course, part of my high opinion of the Mad Hatter episodes stems from the fact that they feature the two finest fights in the series. While the "Water Tower fight" (from the second appearance) is iconic, the climatic tussle in the "Hat Factory" (from the first appearance) was Batman's greatest fight.
mad hatter? i was expecting one of the wild stories from Burt Wards bio...LOL
As a student actor, it's best not to limit yourself in a role. Take what you can and make the best of it. The Mad Hatter is a unique criminal in the Batman series.
Mad Hatter, I vaguely remember this episode. The Mad Hatter is an interesting character in the comics. Fun in the tv show.
Mad Hatter was just a fun story arc. Total shame he didn't like the part as I would have loved to see him again.
Mad Hatter was a fun villain, I love the pop up hat.
The Mad Hatter has always been considered a lesser Batman villain. Still, he has had some interesting moments. For instance, there are actually two versions. One is based upon the classic illustrations found in the "Alice in Wonderland" book. The other is Jarvis Tetch, which is the character David Wayne portrays.
I remember watching David Wayne on the great but short-lived Ellery Queen series, which ran for one season on NBC in the mid-70s. He was delightfully campy as The Mad Hatter. Maybe he just didn’t like the script for his second two-part appearance. I liked his first two-parter better myself. He was obviously exaggerating when he said he was “forced” to do it a second time, and his allusion to the fan mail he got for it suggests he ended up not regretting his decision.
This is an interesting story since many actors were doing anything and everything they could to be on the Batman show! If this story is true, it’s sad that he had to play the Mad Hatter against his will.
I didn't remember the Mad Hatter until I looked at the pics from these episodes (I was just listening at first). Cool story!
Rick,
As you know, your Batman content is my favorite! So, thanks for this episode...
I'm actually a big fan of the MAD HATTER character and his episodes (seen them all). Probably my favorite Tier II villain. I believe this villain was taken from the original comic book series. And too, it's one of the scarier Season 2 cliffhangers, imo.
Be hopeful!

I actually liked The Mad Hatter. Some of his hats were pretty cool. Wayne was a great actor.
Mad Hatter wasn’t anybody’s favorite. I always wonder why King Tut never really came back in anything else I can remember?
Bringing him "back" refers no doubt to the two-parter you mentioned. However, he undoubtedly said it after his FIRST two-parter: The 13th Hat / Batman Stands Pat
Did other Mad Hatter scripts go to The Puzzle Master (Maurice Evans character) or the Clock King? In the comics they made the Clock King and Mad Hatter brothers, BTW
I loved these episodes. The pink cowl was so over the top but this was the style of the show and it works! Way to do camp!
They really needed the Mad Hatter. Oiherwise you just get Joker, Riddler, and Penguin episodes over and over. Add Mr. Freeze and you've got a pretty good collection of villains.
I thought the mad hatter was scary as a kid. The eyes that popped out of the top of his hat. He was in more than one episode, must have had a contract for them. Hope you get more information about him being forced. I heard most actors really wanted to be on the batman show.
I believe David Wayne Had no alternative but to go along and play the Mad Hatter 🎩, I’m a fan of the actor who played the scientist. I wonder if the other actors knew that David Wayne thought this was beneath him and how they felt about that. Thank you! Rick . 👍👋
I don't remember The Mad Hatter, but what became of him?
Mad Hatter was a good villain.
It's been a long time since I saw the series. I don't remember the pink mask, but that hilarious that a figure was made. I'm really enjoying your videos.
That show was amazing all the episodes and seeing the Mad Hatter and all the characters I got Julie Newmar, Burt Ward and Adam West's autographs
Over the years, it's become clear to me that what an actor says happened actually didn't; the tales they tell are cover stories to avoid embarrassment, avoid trouble, or to avoid being boring. Don Knotts and Andy Griffith are two of the biggest liars I know. Whatever actors say, I believe none of it. As for David Wayne's acting skills, he sure knew how to play a bad guy.
It’s a mad mad mad batworld and the Mad Hatter was a great addition to the villains on the show.
I love that episode of The Twilight Zone! I had no idea this was him!
Great video on the very cool Mad Hatter episodes. Mr Wayne was just incredible in everything he did. Glad you included his work on the Twilight Zone.
🙏
I always thought David Wayne was Burgess Meredith. Didn't he do House Calls?
I liked the Mad Hatter when I was a kid.
I love Mad Hatter in the comic books.
These episodes are amazing after so many years.Mad Hatter for the win !!! 🎩
It is possible he was speaking in the metaphorical sense when he said they held a gun to his head cause it could have felt like that cause of the influence 20th century fox had back then and that they could have threatened him with being black listed if he didn’t do the second appearance but there are some great villains that only had one appearance like false face and the bookworm for example but I do like changing the color of Batman’s cowl to reflect the contamination of the cowl cause it aged better then trying to do s special effect in post production on the episode like a glowing effect that wouldn’t have aged as well
Mad Hatter not my favorite but Batman and Robin.....campy YES!
Mad Hatter did great job on the show.
I love Batman 66 and all the villains including the Mad Hatter
I watched Batman in reruns as a kid and Mad Hatter wasn’t one of my favorites. It always seemed like we had these filler villains when the main ones weren’t available.
I've always liked the character The Mad Hatter, but I've never understood him. Is he just crazy or is he from a place where crazy is normal so he's not really crazy, he's only crazy to us? I don't know what's the dilly-o with him. But I like him.
I think that’s the point, there’s a bit of mystery to him
I remember him mostly as Ellery Queen's dad.
I remember this Mad Hatter episode
I will have to watch this episode with the Mad Hatter, as I'm not as familiar with him.
I didn't know he played the Mad Hatter twice.
Mad Hatter .
Back then I kinda liked him as a bad guy & hoped to see him again.
But if they did force him to play the part .
Knowing that now .
I can live with not seeing more of him,
Be safe Rest well & GB4N
