1999 Honda Z50R Restoration | Abandoned for 10+ Years, Cleaned, Painted, & Big Bored!

  • I bought this 1999 Honda Z50R from Ike after he bought 8 abandoned Z50s that had been sitting in the woods for over a decade. This Honda mini bike was in rough shape- no gas cap, so water was sitting in the fuel tank, no spark plug, so the piston was completely rusted in the cylinder and the valves were stuck. Overall the paint wasn't in terrible shape, so we gave the old Honda Z50 a good wash and gave it some white touch up paint. It cleaned up really well!

    I restored my 99 z50 last year. I've had the bike since new. I went oem with everything so it ended up costing me $500 more than it did new......lol. Sandblasted and resprayed it with shasta white two pack and new oem decals....... rode it 15m and the front sprocket threw the chain and shredded the stator case...... You guys are inspiring me to finally finish it

    The paint reaction is because you probably waited too long to clear coat it. Most cans will say "recoat within 2 hours or after 3 days" or something along those lines. The base coat dries, but the solvents are still evaporating. When you clear it within the first time frame, the paints kinda mix together and flash off together. If you wait too long, the base coat is still flashing and the solvents react with the clear coat and bubble up. You have to wait the few days for it to be completely done flashing off, or sand it down and start over.

    Just rotate the muffler 180 degrees. I have this pipe on an 88 z50r and if you point it towards the center there is no risk of melting plastic. Also doesn't hurt putting some of that reflective tape in the inside of the plastic

    to solve your rear plastic problem, you can buy an 83 left number plate mount and white number plate, matched up with a 76 metal rear fender. golden! I might be willing to part with my spare mount as well.

    had the same thing happen when applied "chrome spray paint" and clear on top. It bubbled up like that. Incompatible paints basically.
    Really nice mini bike though, good job on it.

    I had about a dozen CT70 wheel halves powder-coated the closest to factory Honda silver I could find and they all turned out awesome. No more worrying about them rusting out ever again. I'm all about keeping the stock look, but there's a point when it's not worth the time and effort. Especially when you're painting a bike with a q-tip.

    Have you guys tried the molasses rust removal trick, mix blackstrap molasses 5 to 1 with water in a big drum. (I use 44 gallon plastic drums with the top cut off) and soak the complete part in it.
    I do everything from springs from trailers, car crossmembers, mini bike frames and anything too complicated to wire brush or grind.
    Just throw it all in and leave for a week or even months. Only takes of the rust but don’t put any alloy in it.
    The rust turns to a black goo and washes off to clean metal.
    The mix lasts for years, just have to top it off with fresh molasses every 6 months.
    Can put a complete engine block in it but would then require a all new cam bearings and any alloy part replaced.
    Currently have a XR70 frame and swingarm in it.

      What happens if you have a half rusted 50 frame and still has paint on it
      Will it strip the whole thing?? Paint aswell?
      Saves me time with my grinder thats for sure

    So I haveca kz 750 LTD with a screen door for a gas tank. I took it diwn to bare metal and used a blunt punch to ding every pin hole, so it forms more of a plug than a patch when I jb welded it. I then coarse wire brushed the dings so the jb weld would stick even better. Cleaned the crap out of it with acetone. Filled all the pinholes with jb weld and put a piece of packing tape over the jb weld to keep it I place. Don't push the tape in, just seal it around it to leave some jb weld higher than the ding. Let it set up and sand it like it's Bondo. Block it then palm sand. My tank was already "KREEMED" so I couldn't use sealer again. But sealee after the jb should be a nice long term fix. Look up tank electrolysis to get rust out too.

      have you guys ever considered welding a holey tank? I had an 80's Mustang with a leaky tank (bunch of pin holes under the hanger straps). Washed it out, welded it (MIG). real low heat, moderate wire speed so you don't blast through it. Give it a try sometime.

    Certain types of paint will off gas for almost a week depending how thick the costs are. Just be careful with that. I've put clear on a piece 2 days after paint and had bubbles.

  • @vintagetintrader1062
    @vintagetintrader1062 4 роки тому

    For the paint bubbling, you need to rust convert it first before painting, you need deoxidisers that panel shops use, basically a acid rust converter.
    Most quality non Chinese bikes are dipped in a zinc rich mix before painting, this stops instant rusting as soon as a bit of paint is scratched off the bike.
    (And why Chinese bikes rust away in 6 months because they don’t go through this process)

  • @JellyBean-ed2uq
    @JellyBean-ed2uq 4 роки тому

    @CarsandCameras From personal experience, I'd say for the gas tank, on similar situations, to wire wheel it with an angle grinder in order to make yourselves able to see the pin holes. It will also help with the repair paste to adhere better and reveal more holes that the paint is hiding

    Not sure if you guys bought that engine kit, or if it was donated for a promotional presentation, but usually you can buy a complete pit bike engine that's a clone of that 50-90 Honda engine for a few hundred bucks. If the kit was donated, then of course reusing the old engine is a good idea. But the complete engine comes with electronics, wiring, and carb. Now that I think of it, I think you used one on your 70s Honda trail 70 rebuild
