You can dance a long time as long as you maintain a daily rigorous dance workout. For me, I am 71 and have danced professionally since I started ballet in my teens. Now at 71 I continue to take ballet class daily and I keep up just fine with the 20 year olds and will continue to for a long time. Unfortunately most people at my age have stopped working out at anything.
It’s a dream. Fred and Leslie together. They danced divinely. Fred was a fantastic dancer, the best of all. Thank you for sharing this beautiful moment. Nowadays we don’t stand a chance to see the same, no in a million years.
Cheers and happy thanks Ralph! I wanted to make mention that today - January 20, 2023, is the birthday of the wonderfully talented band-leader (trumpeter) Ray Anthony. My God, he turned 101 years old today (born in 1922). By all accounts Mr. Anthony is still mentally sharp (still working) and going quite strong. Happy birthday dear sir!
Fred Astaire has been my idol since I saw him on TV when I was about ten. I have never seen anyone who could emulate his style no matter how hard they tried.
AN extraordinary orchestra ever in stereophonic sound anyway! With FRED ASTAIRE! BRAVO no way no words! In Technicolor to and Wide Screen Cinemascope! BRAVO from PARIS FRANCE. Emmanuel
You can see me clearly in two spots. First at 1:14 I'm talking to a girl in a flowery gown at the left right over Terry Moore's shoulder after she appears. Then at 2:00 I'm second from left. Do you have annotations turned off? I put markers up at my appearances which will not show up if you have annotations turned off. That is the little white square icon at bottom right, the first icon. Click on it to make it bright white which indicates annotations are on.
Since you were there tell me this. Were there microphones present at the filming of this number picking up all the sounds effects like the taps that Leslie and Fred make with their feet as well as the clapping sounds of the onlookers? Were the band and the band singers dubbing at the time of the filming or did they sing and perform at the time of the filming? Dancing stars from that era always say that they rerecord their taps at a different time in a recording studio while watching themselves on film.
Wow, that's so awesome!! I just watched this movie for the first time the other day.. it was pretty fun. Fred was still a fantastic dancer for his age! He moved with such smoothness.. I just turned 20, but I was raised on classic movies and have loved them my whole life. I wish I had been around back then so I might've had a chance of meeting one of those awesome stars!
You are so right Emily. Fred was a first class dancer who still inspires dancing students all over the world. I feel honored to have had the chance to watch him doing what he did so well in this fun filled set. I took a peek at your YT page. You have a very nice voice and I hope you will take some vocal lessons. There is an interesting quality in the tone of your vocal that you should nurture. If you follow the link to my blog above, I discuss this set in more detail.
Thank you so much, that's very kind of you! Unfortunately I don't have the money to take lessons of any kind. I have a keyboard, guitar and violin, but don't know how to play any of them. I would love lessons, but it's too expensive.
***** Just read your blog... Fantastic! Makes me wish even more that I could've been around then, and visited one of the studios. I've always been intrigued by show business...

Kind of. It was a union rule that you never converse with a star unless they talk to you first. But it was and is common that when you are in a group around the star they will initiate the conversation with some comment about the scene we are in. Most bigger than life stars are very friendly to the background. So in that sense I conversed with Fred while shooting the scene when a few of us are standing around him as I have with most stars I worked with.
Hello Ralph, before I made my recent post, I did not notice the link you placed with your own personal memories/observations about being an extra on this film. It was very interesting and informative as to the detail which went into this very fun and memorable scene with Astaire and Caron. P.S. That is a great looking photo-clip of you. You certainly could have given Tab Hunter a run for his money! Cheers from Niagara Canada!!
In the 1950s it was very difficult to become an extra as it was a highly organized union (SEG) that required you to belong. There were only a few ways you could join the union. Either by a connection or by being accepted by Central Casting. I repeatedly applied at CC during their weekly interviews until I finally was accepted when they needed young guys of my type. Today anyone can become an extra but as a non-union minimum wage pay scale. It is still difficult to become a union extra.
Hi Ralph: This is my favorite movie and I've always wanted to "talk" to someone who was an extra in any of Fred's movies. What a joy that must have been. The only woman I envy is Leslie Caron because she danced with Fred (gasp!) and acted with Cary Grant. Heaven!
Every previous Astaire musical had camera pans to follow the dancing. Cinemascope sort of prevented that. The camera might pan in and out a little at most.
Notice how Alfred and Leslie are dressed in colors that are very different from all the other people in this scene. That's so that they will clearly stand out while they're dancing by themselves in front of the line-up of extras in the background. All the men's jackets are white or blue-grey while Fred is entirely in black. All the women's dresses are light or pastel while Leslie is in bright red.
Well, that must have been some experience. It's a wonderful film. That guy on the sax who looks an awful lot like Cary Grant _is_ just the guy on the sax who looks an awful lot like Cary Grant, right?
LOL. Yeah he just looks like Cary Grant. All the guys in the band are the real members of the Ray Anthony band. Ray Anthony was one of the better known big bands of the 50s along with the Dorsey brothers and so many others.
creepiest movie ever old decrepit guy getting involved with a early 20s girl I love Astaire and this dance number is great and this movie is extremely inappropriate and creepy
Fred Astaire was 55 years old when this movie was released. Amazing dancing, even for someone half his age. He's a real inspiration for us all.
He was still a great dancer in his seventies. What mattered in his case, I believe, was the combination of subtlety, elegance and musicality.

Just commenting that It's FANTASTIC, Ralph to have been a part of this. I'm completely impressed and wish I knew every detail.

Emily Edwards If you like show business, try to find a little theater group in your area where you could gain some experience.

I feel this was the very best of Astaire with Caron. And her routine in the Hong Kong cafe was brilliant.

You may be cool, but you'll never be as cool as Fred Astaire dancing the slew foot with Leslie Caron.
I've herd of them.I'll be sure to check them out.Sigh.I was born fifty years too late.

RALPH...that's so cool 😎
A great number Forvall
I see now...you were in the crowd :)
The Box-step goes back and then right; forward and then left. He reversed it. I did a LOT of Box-step in dance class.
Thank you, very much. I went back and looked and found you.
That must have been so exciting for you!
How did you get to be an extra?
This was pretty neat. But I also enjoyed working on The Student Prince as much as Daddy Longlegs..
Skip Martin's orchestrations are outrageous and easily a match for the MGM bunch.

My mom and Dad are in this number.
Brutaaaal!
I am the blond boy in the front…was in that scene
Si el programa del 12 de octubre fue bueno,el del 13 fue mejor!😂 Bing, Mill Broder, Gene, Fred,😅❤ Leslie, Caron, felicitaciones!😢❤
