Gimli, I think, is the greatest dwarf to have lived. Not for courage or prowess in battle (which he certainly had), but for being a healer.
He healed the rift between Rohirrim and Dwarf.
He healed the rift between Galadhrim and Dwarf.
He built the bond between Gondorean and Dwarf.
And at last, Gimli stood before the Valar, first among dwarves.
I also must comment on the strength of Tolkien's work, that it inspires so many to such passion in its studies, as we see in examples like this video. Well done.

Hope all is going well for Dave! Been relistening to Dave's video over and over. Amazed how much content he gives us. I bought the Silmarillion to read. There's nothing in it I don't already know. Dave is so through. Have learned a thing or two on other channels. The song the of the elves and more of Gildor Inglorion's part helping Frodo get to Rivendale. Also, the seeing stones and what happened to them. Also, that there were 2 other stones independent of the 7 that that could see to the undying lands from the tallest white tower off the west coast (of the Shire?). I do miss Dave however. I hope he's slaying it with his book! (Love you Dave!)☺🌈

There sincerely is no other youtube experience like this one. These long-form videos are so appropriately reflective of Tolkeins legendary style of writing. I feel as if I've embarked on a new journey into a familiar world.
A sidenote I've always found intriguing: despite the sacred significance of the reincarnated heirs of Durins namesake, not all of the seven play a particularly pivotal or influential role in the progression of the Dwarven race. Some live and pass on without any recognition in the annals of naugrim lore.

I'm not saying anything against Telchar, I'm really not, but I am saying the fact that the two main pieces of ironwork he's known for - Angrist and Narsil - both get broken when Our Heroes use them is not the best advertisement for Ye Olde Telchar's Weaponry and Smithing Shoppe.
(Kidding! I kid! But I do find it funny. The greatest craftsman of the dwarves, ever, is best known wares that are famous for getting broken. Yes, I know, in extraordinary circumstances both times, etc, etc. All the same.)

JRR Tolkien was recorded reading The Hobbit. If you get the e-book of The Hobbit (75th Anniversary Edition) Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, there are four recordings within the ebook of Tolkien reading from the text. If Tolkien recorded his voice reading The Hobbit, then this would be a definitive source to hear him pronounce the Dwarves names.

I want to know every detail about the dwarven kingdoms! Gundabad? From whence The Deathless came?!!? There has to be a story there!! And In my mind, Moria is bigger / deeper than Erebor, but I'm truly making that up! How about a list of kingdoms of dwarves by size and or population!!?? The Iron Hills are also geographically interesting. Maybe after Children of Hurin, give us another dwarven palette cleanser. A brutal, brutal palette cleanser. How many dwarven kingdoms existed at the height of their existence? How few, when they were most brutally massacred?? Where did dwarves flourish in each age? Thank you for inspiring me to love the Professor's work more with every video! RAINBOW FREAKIIN DAVE!! Love ya, buddy!!

Hey, Dave! Love your channel, the work and the detail you put into it!
I just wanna say that as a Scandinavian, your pronounciation of the Dwarven names are pretty spot on to how we pronounce the letter 'A'. Since most of the Dwarven names are based on/ripped-off old Norse names, I think Tolkien marked the A to make it obvious where it differs from the normal English way of pronouncing it.

Thanks! I’m so glad you said that! I’ve had quite a few people tell me that the ‘A’ sound should be pronounced in a more English/French way, but I confidently disagree. I firmly believe Tolkien would have intended it to be pronounced as a Germanic/Scandinavian ‘A’.

I've got such a soft spot for dwarves, they are my favourite race. This video perfectly encapsulates why. The tragedy and the heroism of Durin's folk played out over the ages of the world.
Great video, good to have you back Dave!

Nice! Beautiful tales of heroism that are relatable to modern life. Thank you for sharing your gift of translation. I for one feel that you placed your mark in this imaginarium, but in a real way, if that makes any sense.

I find it interesting that, while Tolkien was very religious himself, the only real "religion" in a dogmatic sense we experience in middle-earth is through the Dwarves. There are certain things the Elves hold sacred like the light of Elbereth or whatever, but you don't really find Men (or Hobbits) paying any kind of service to religious tradition. It's mostly the Dwarves. Their language and traditions are sacred.

I have wondered about this as well. I mean in general about the lack of organized religion in Middle Earth in the sense that Tolkien knew it. Maybe he thought more rituals or actual buildings of worship would be too complicating.
