    There is another huge advantage of Sony lens... It works with 2x and 1.4x converters and for me, that's the deal braker.

    • @Maximilian-Willert
      @Maximilian-Willert 10 місяців тому +5

      I totally agree. The 2x converter (even though you go down to F5.6) is a beast. I use it for wild life video and its an absolute blast when mounted on an A7S3.

      I think Sony have influence on Sigma and they forced them to do not add TC support, for E mount. Otherwise why they didn’t implemented this on E mount if they did on L mount?) It is competition between strong man and weak man beaten by strong. It is awful to understand this…

    • @boristahmasian9604
      @boristahmasian9604 10 місяців тому

      Considering how well these teleconverters work with f2.8 lenses, it is indeed a major advantage to the Sony. I think he 70-200 with a 2X converter would compete favorably with a dedicated fixed 400mm f5.6 lens. Sony is great. I own the Tamron G1. I am happy with its performance AND the price. If I had the budget, I would go for the Sony for all the advantages it has over Sigma and Tamron.

      @@photobatya Well, nothing new here. All 3rd party lenses on Sony E mount can't use teleconverters. I guess that's what we get for having "open" mount with no other restrictions in making lenses for Sony cameras. We get a lot (many cheaper, good lenses), but not all. However if it's price we have to pay for all that lens availability, I guess I'm ok with that.
      I'm more concerned with that 15fps limit.

    Just watched a manufacturing video of the Sigma factiry. I didnt realize how humans sre still greatly involved in making lenses. There was a worker hand painting the marking on the lens barrels. Crazy how they're able to offer these lenses at such a price with so many people and steps involved

    • @cristian_c

      Saw the same video, the handmade painting was 🤯.

    • @JaredBeaman
      @JaredBeaman 5 місяців тому +1

      @@cristian_c YT Algorithm also fed me that video. It was great to see behind the scenes. However, the hand painting was a little less impressive than it first appeared. According to a discussion in the comments, they were actually injecting ink into a pre-machined groove, rather then relying on being ultra consistent with their hand lettering. Still a task requiring precision.

    Gerald, no mystery why Sony limits the fps on third-party E-mount lens, it is to protect some sales of their own Sony lenses. Same for no TCs on third-party E-mount lenses. The L version of this lens will take TCs on Leica and Panasonic as well as full fps. Strictly a Sony business decision. Do you really think many would buy the Sony at $1300 USD more if this Sigma was allowed to do 20fps on the A9/A9II, 30 fps on the A1, and 120 fps on the A9III, and with TCs. No way. Cheers and thanks from another Gerald.

    Removing the foot is always my first step when getting a lens, especially this size. Non-linear focus is also a head scratcher. You are right about the GMII. It does spoil you especially with weight, how close you can get to the object at 70, and love the pics you get from it. Probably my favorite Sony zoom lens. If I am going to find savings on lenses it won't be here.

    As someone who owns the GM II, I don't think I could go to the Sigma for several reasons. Close focusing isn't huge for what I do but is nice to have. The manual focusing was surprisingly one of my favorite parts about the GM II. The parfocal performance is great as well (and I didn't realize until just now tbh). I use the GM II on an RS3 Pro for event coverage, so every bit of weight savings is worth it for me. If I hadn't already used the Sony, then I think the Sigma would be great for most people. I'm just glad to finally see Sigma come out with their version. (Also I love Sigma glass and own their 24-70, so no biases here - well, other than FOR Sigma against other brands that aren't Sony lol)

  • @QuietOC

    It seems to be a lens communication protocol speed that causes the 15 FPS limit. Sony lenses since late 2016 use a faster protocol than their older lenses. The later lenses still support the older protocol for the A7 and APS-C bodies. Third-parties either aren't allowed to use the faster speed or choose not use it. Four of the Sony lenses released in 2016 support up to 20 FPS instead of or 15 FPS. The original FE 2.8/70-200 GM supports 30 FPS, but isn't on the list of 120 FPS lenses, so there might be another tier there. The most recent Sony lenses also support Silent Priority Aperture Driver in AF and those lenses also show a AE limitation on the A9III with the aperture getting fixed in busts at 60 FPS or higher.

      this is basically sony and how they limit third party lenses. Others may limit autofocus lenses to certain focals, or even say that they only do manual focus lenses and so on. Every camera brand limits third party lenses in some way.

    • @alexlubinski7795
      @alexlubinski7795 10 місяців тому

      actually fps burst doesnt matter much, because sony sucks at fps burst, unitll you have a9 or a1 LOL... sony is soooo behind in that aspect.

    Only thing that matters to me is sharpness and focus speed... so for $1300 in savings you better believe I am buying the Sigma. I have been buying GM primes and Sigma zooms...and been very happy with my choices so far (Sigma 24-70 and 60-600, Sony 35 and 50 GM). After this 70-200 I will probably get the 14-24 and then possibly an 85 GM II if they ever update it.

    How is the optical stabilization? As a filmmaker I really like the 70-200 G master for some extreme close-ups. I wonder if I'll be able to shoot handheld with it and have - sorta - stable footage.

    Isn't Sigma much heavier than GM2 as well? I mean $1200+ difference is certainly a lot but when you add up all the features that GM2 has, such as 30fps burst, teleconverters, lighter weight, linear focus, etc I think GM2 is still worth the investment IMO.

    • @photobatya
      @photobatya 10 місяців тому

      All this “features” are not very hard to implement, except weight, which is not very critical on this kind of a lens. Besides sigma already have teleconverters. It looks like as artificial limitations from Sony, in this way they can sell their lenses many times expensive. It is pure and not fair capitalism

    This lens feels so odd/disappointing after such a long wait. Why wouldn't they include their modern lens hood, make the foot easily detachable, and why correct focus breathing for videographers but not have a linear focus ring. Then there's the question of where this fits. The lens is same size as sony but so much heavier. What real advantage does this lens have over the tamron g2? Just the 20mm extra on top? Is iq different from the tamron?

    • @TechnoBabble
      @TechnoBabble 10 місяців тому +1

      IQ on the Sigma is noticeably better at 200mm than the Tamron at 180mm, without factoring in that small difference in focal length (so an even bigger difference in the real world for subjects far enough to need 200+mm. Plus the Sigma zooms internally and has optical stabilization, which generally works better on longer lenses than IBIS.

    • @randomlyunknown2012
      @randomlyunknown2012 10 місяців тому

      @@TechnoBabble is this compared to the original tamron or the G2? The G2 does have tamron's stabilization, which supposedly isn't as good as sigma. But these are such minor differences for a lens that's like half the weight and considerably more packable

    • @TechnoBabble
      @TechnoBabble 10 місяців тому +1

      @@randomlyunknown2012 Sorry yes, the G2 does have optical stabilization but it's not quite as good.
      Like I said, all comes down to how much that weight and size matter. I would personally go for the Sigma, but I also shoot with their Art 40mm f/1.4, which is one of the heaviest stills primes in that focal length range ever made.
      I don't mind the size and weight because I can handle it fairly easily and it gives me better technical image quality. For most people, that doesn't matter. The more important thing would be the better build quality and the internal zooming for better sealing.

Not only greater FPS, but a higher percentage of hits. I have pre-ordered the A9 III. With that camera, Sigma is not in the game with this zoom.

    I feel like the big lens companies are lacking when compared to cheaper lens companies lately. Non-linear focus is a non-buy for me and many others since video is such an important thing in our industry right now. Also add in noisy focus, wrong spot for the rings and no real gain other than price, I can't see this lens getting popular. The 35-150mm 2-2.8's have taken over the wedding business in my corner of the planet and I can't see anyone buying a 70-200 instead of a 35-150 when upgrading or getting something to cover a "medium/long range". Specially with that almost parfocal zoom and decent manual ring, which are also in the right spot. I've been groaning for a while when I have to pull out the 12-24 sigma for ultrawides, specially seeing the small and light Sony ultrawides.
    But then again, I would rather use 3 cameras with 3 small prime lenses (like a 20mm, 55mm, 135mm) than 1 camera with 1 huge lens that does everything.

  • @RobDeMaio
    @RobDeMaio 10 місяців тому

    No linear manual focus? Can you clarify if this might just be your copy of the lens or if that will be final across all production models? CVP’s review indicates that there is indeed linear manual focusing with a longer throw than the Sony. Confusing, and as a video shooter, no linear manual focus is a no-go for me.
