Exactly if someone wee to say to be “salam alehkum” (I don’t know how to spell it) or ‘peace be upon you’, I’d respect and be thankful for the intention behind it, because they genuinely mean what they are saying and they are wishing me well, so I’d respect that and be nice back. That was my father ... Why papa? And then he would give you a history or a science lesson. Which is why I ended up studying cosmology and planetary sciences. He had grown up with 16 kids and being the eldest he knew how to raise kids (ethnic Shaphardi Jews, but Catholics by faith). He had been educated by the Jesuits. My mother who was a psychiatrist and a child psychologist was an orphan had no understanding of how to raise kids even though she had a licentiate in child psychology. Fathers make such a great difference in how children grow up to be. He had me doing studying college level mathematics and the Euclidean proofs at the age of 10 and it was so entertaining. It is one thing to get a child to study but it is another to make the child to know it is the most enjoyable thing to do. Got a pencil now give me a puzzle to figure out myself.

Godspeed, meaning "a prosperous journey," comes from the Middle English phrase God spede you ("God prosper you"). It was originally used to wish success to someone, like saying, “May you prosper.” These days it's more often used to express hopes for a safe trip

the guy is a douche bag and, and once again this Neil deGrasse douche bag is wrong... god speed origin doesn't come from the space programs to wish a good travel in space, that's ridicoulous. The word originates from Middle English (circa 1200-1300) meaning “may God cause you to succeed”. “God speed” is found also in the King James Version of the Bible which was translated from 1600 and only in one passage.
Awesomely accurate, at least. It has other issues that could be improved in principle. For instance, if there were 360 days in the year, we could have exactly 30 days in each month. We have 5 more days than that in non-leap years... so why are there *7* months with 1 extra day and then one runt of a month with 2 days removed? I'm sure that's for historical reasons of how the Roman calendar worked, but now we can see it's a little more complicated than necessary. If I were to design it from scratch, I'd rather just have 7 months of 30 days and 5 of 31 days, and make one of the 30-day months have an extra day in a leap year, resulting in 6 of 30 days and 6 of 31 days.
Daniel Dawson i think you are over simplifying the complexity of making changes to the calendar. Do you think with your postulation that there would be no disturbance in the timing of the equinoxes? I would imagine over time summer would be in December in the northern hemisphere with your rather aesthetic calendar idea.
@@barrontrump3943 Perhaps you're not understanding what I was getting at. I'm not talking about changing the number of days in the year, just redistributing the lengths of the months. And yes, all of the leap year rules of the Gregorian calendar, too. How would that shift the seasons like you claim?
Daniel Dawson if you redistribute the days in the months even considering the leap years you will be shifting around seasons over time because seasons do not fluctuate with an even set amount of days. The seasons would be thrown off eventually with your idea.
@@barrontrump3943 That makes no sense at all. Every year in my idea has the *same number of days* as in the Gregorian calendar. The days of months on which things fall might be different, but there would be no more or less drift over many years.

*Actually TYSON IS WRONG ABOUT THE CALENDARS. He’s confusing aspects between the Julian (Orthodox) and the Gregorian (Catholic) calendars. It is the Orthodox (original) that have the more Astrologically accurate calendar because they trace the cosmos so that Easter always falls after the Passover and the Catholic (Gregorian reformed calendar) often times has Easter occurring BEFORE the Passover, which is chronologically inaccurate. The Catholics revised the entire calendar for ONE main reason and that was so that the Birth of Christ (Orthodox January 7th) would correlate with the Birth of MITHRA (on December 25th: long celebrated pagan date which was the birth of the ancient Roman “messiah”) who was worshipped for centuries before Christ. In order to merge the religions and subsequent worship the western romans adopted the Gregorian model in an effort to expand their power by assimilating more followers.*

It is not just about what other atheist do. Its also what Neil stands for. Atheists deny the existence of God and goes to great lengths to disprove and discredit. Neil DeGrasse Tyson seeks proof of God's existence and welcomes any information. He respects and credits religious contribution to science and its culture. That's what differentiates him from atheists. As he said, it kinda applies to him, but what atheists do also makes them a religion and that's where the border is.

Personally, I don't understand why people have a problem with Neil's point. A lot of people would argue that they aren't feminist (despite the English definition being applicable) because they don't identify with the politics of current feminism.
So true. I can’t stand feminists these days. I could never call myself one. However I do strongly root for equality. They’ve become two separate identities unfortunately.
Phi6er I mean, the fighting for the right for women to do things like vote, hold jobs given to them in WW2 (needed because only men were hired in factories), or even serve in the miltary under a combatant role sounds like equality to me.
Big Richard You don’t always need to call yourself something to be that thing. If you fit the definition then that’s good enough. I think Neil is wrong about how the word “atheist” is used. I’ve never met anyone who thought being an atheist means debating religious people all the time. From my experience people understand that atheist just means not believing in any gods and not following a religion. Then again, maybe my experience is skewed and most people use a different definition for the word atheist.
I'm with him on this. I'm a Buddhist, but also an atheist. I was raised in a secular/humanist household and was never anywhere near a church or a bible. I have ZERO problem with someone say to me "God bless you." after I sneeze, or Merry Christmas, or when I do something nice for someone and they also say "God bless you." I don't start ranting and raving, get upset, go on some diatribe explaining to them about how I am not a theist - that's for the constantly, perpetually triggered liberals to do. I smile and thank them. I don't try to make it about me, I simply appreciate the gesture and thought. I think some people are just miserable and we all know that misery loves company.
I've literally thought for years that people who insist on 'BCE" and "CE" because they're not Christian should change all the days of the week unless they worship Thor, Tyr, Woden, etc.
I can confirm as a non-christian (muslim) that i really don't care if people use BC/AD. It seems that americans and europeans care more about this than the rest of the world.
@Jubei Yang the Big Bang Theory was invented by a Catholic Priest. The Laws of Genetics were invented by a Christian Monk. Religion contributed to science more than atheism. Islam, Christianity, and Judaism have the strongest impact on science.

@John McKay 5% is still about 15 million people in the USA, I consider that popular. By extremism, I mean anytime someone pushes their beliefs too far. For atheism, that is ridiculing and attacking religious people. The same goes the other way as well. I didn't say I agree with him, I was saying many people tend to think the same way as Neil. Hence, for example, why many people now reject feminism, despite probably agreeing with it's definition and want for equality. The definition should determine if you're an atheist. However, some people don't want to be considered athesist because of the atheists who ridicule religious people. Whether you agree with their logic or not, is not what I was referring to.
@John McKay I am very aware of religious extremists, and am very against it. Maybe if you read my original comment you'd understand that. Extremism doesn't have to include murders and physical assaults, it can just be hatred or mockery of a particular group. Like racism, it doesn't have to be physically violent. Although, atheists have committed violent crimes and terrorism against religious people. Regardless of number, they exist, which is my point. These people give atheists a bad name to people like Neil, who then distance themselves from that behaviour and the tag 'atheist' . This conversation isn't about 'what act is worse, beheadings and bombings, or calling someone a moron?'. It is about whether, just because some atheists call religious people morons, does that change peoples view of atheism? The answer is yes, my evidence, Neil's view, hence my original comment.
@John McKay so extremism is only extremism when it kills, that's alright. with that in mind, I propose a new definition for people who verbally attack someone for their beliefs, and it's either religious asshole or atheist asshole. both exist
John McKay “who are these atheist extremists?” Would you care to share who are the “theist extremists”? Are those anywhere? Dude - I’m an atheist. Ted Kaczynski, Hitler, Stalin - and don’t feed anyone the bullshit that any of those guys were religious. Hitchens was dead fucking wrong on it. And often a blatant liar. Well understood Hitler was as atheist as you can get. Also - no one does shit in the name of “theism.” Just as no one does anything in the name of “atheism.” Be a man and attack religious ideology with the ideology YOU obviously have. It’s secular. So you have a secular ideology and you want to pick fights with religious folks. Don’t be a fuck. You have something, and it’s motivating you to try and set people right. What do you think it is?
I’m a Christian who is totally facinated with Neil Degrasse Tyson, especially with him shattering stereotypes as a black scientist. Initially, his explanation about how the leap year in the Gregorian calendar corrects the deficiencies of the Julian calendar was a bit over my head. I had to review that part of the interview more than once!
Man I love this guy, I'm a Christian and this man has my full respect, especially on the note when he said "I'm not gonna tell people they're idiots for believing in God". If only everybody practiced this for every type of belief, we shouldn't be judging each other, we should be learning from each other, and this man embodies that idea to a T. Very knowledgeable and very respectable
I’m a non-believer and if you knew me in person, you wouldn’t know. I say things like “god bless you”, because I like to make people feel good. If you approach me and want to debate me, I bet I’d get you thinking- but it’s not my place and it’s clearly not “weird” to believe. It’s not my business. I love you, we never met, but I love life and think there’s no encore. Why would anyone want to be a dick over a question nobody can answer? Life is too short.
To remove the religious history from science would be disparaging many of the greatest scientists and mathematicians. I'm in agreement with Neil as an "atheist". People of cloth were some of the greatest pioneers in science, maths, physics/engineering, chemistry, anatomy & physiology, genetics, and medicine. I feel where "things went wrong" was that in many places, the Church as an institution (regardless of denomination or sect), quelled curiosity of the wonders of the world. The pioneers saw God as the watch maker and wanted to understand how it works, instead of being content with just having the watch which is where many people are at today.

Godspeed, meaning "a prosperous journey," comes from the Middle English phrase God spede you ("God prosper you"). It was originally used to wish success to someone, like saying, “May you prosper.” These days it's more often used to express hopes for a safe trip

"It's a fucking awesome calendar" - Neil deGrasse Tyson

The point im making is I get why us Christians would be offended but I dont get why so much offense is taken when I question evolution and raise very serious questions? Or maybe look into other areas for answers?
To summarize, the stakes for Christians are high so I get the reaction. With atheist though, you have already decided there is no God so the offense shouldn't exist given in their mind it just means they must have came about some other way.

Such theories include the idea of a multiverse in which our big bang is similar to plentiful of singularities that we observe within our universe (like the ones at the centers of galaxies and that occur from collapsed stars). Like our big bang and the collapsed stars we do not have an observable insight on what occurs at the other end - YET we know they still exist as they have an effect in our universe, mainly warping of Space-time through gravitational and electromagnetic forces as postulated by Einstein. Atheists deny the existence of God and goes to great lengths to disprove and discredit. Neil DeGrasse Tyson seeks proof of God's existence and welcomes any information. He respects and credits religious contribution to science and its culture. That's what differentiates him from atheists.

A few loud extremists can ruin any popular point of view
Don’t walk around stupidly thinking your shit doesn’t stink. Secular ideology does just as much shitty things as religious ideology.
And as a Christian (which I am) we should not tell people who don’t believe in God that they’re idiots. How does that convey God’s love?
To remove the religious history from science would be disparaging many of the greatest scientists and mathematicians. I'm in agreement with Neil as an "atheist". People of cloth were some of the greatest pioneers in science, maths, physics/engineering, chemistry, anatomy & physiology, genetics, and medicine. I feel where "things went wrong" was that in many places, the Church as an institution (regardless of denomination or sect), quelled curiosity of the wonders of the world.
