I made this video to show how to make hardware organizers using PVC downspout and scrap plywood. Ended up being more of a rant about all types of shop organization.
I just love the way you say, "Look at that!" (around eight and a half minutes in.)I get so excited when I organize things, when I am done I call my grown children in to come look. When friends drop by I take them on a tour, opening cabinets and drawers, and saying, (you got it,,,), "Look at that!". FYI, you are not boring. Your enthusiasm is enjoyable and inspiring.I just found out that the word enthusiasm from Greek language and means, filled with God. I am not religious but I know the feeling and it is powerful and uplifting, so you hang on to that. I have been organizing the area under our house that was my sweethearts wood shop. He passed away a couple of years ago and being down there makes me feel close to him. He saved every scrap from every job, "Just in case someone needs it." So there are tons of odds and ends. Knowing what I have to work with and where it all is has encouraged me to pick up where he left off and do little jobs helping people repair things or build little tools to make little tools. If someone needs a thingy ma jig, they know where to come. I can spend ten hours down there and forget I have to go do laundry or fix dinner. In fact what am I doing watching UA-cam? I haven't been down all day. See ya! Thanks for the video, I will check out more later on my little Echo I put in the shop to look up projects and listen to music.
Thanks for the encouraging words! I find it amazing that you took it upon yourself to more or less "pick up where he left off." You clearly appreciated his many talents and were more than a casual observer over the years. When my grandfather passed away I was still quite young, he too had a collection of bits and bobs. Sadly my grandmother was so overwhelmed a lot of it went straight to the curb, some was sent to auction for pennies, and the rest was literally buried in a hole out back of her own digging. Though young at the time I was given some of his hand tools and I'm grateful for that. I never got to really know him, but I still feel close whenever I use a speed square, utility knife, or screwdriver with his name etched in the side. I hope you will continue to help those around you, and who knows maybe you will encouraged yet another!
You all should see my stock of hardware. I have everything: nuts, bolts, washers, springs, EVERYTHING! I keep it all in perfect organization too. I keep it all... at Tractor Supply!
I like your idea! I change my own oil and even though I mostly use gallons I also have many quart bottles. If you carefully cut the bottles off with a table saw or snips, rinse them in gasoline to make the labels fall off and wash them in soapy water, rinse and dry. Depending on the shape of the bottle they make excellent square bins for all kinds of small parts.
Finally! someone more OCD than me! I have the same setup with the Plano boxes, same bins, etc... but your shop is definitely a notch above mine! VERY NICE! I’m headin to Lowe’s for Gutter down spouts!

This is awsome. I think i will end up going to a store that sell packaging to take away stores. Some if the sturdier "one time" use plastic stuff I think will hold up quite well.

We will always be walking into a store and find a washer or bolt of some kind in the parking lot and I have to pick it up.When you love to build things there is nothing better than free materials at your fingertips! And hey when you walk into a store needing one bolt but there selling them by the pound like candy for $1.65 why not grab a bag full to make your trip worth while.
14:08 Genius! This is exactly what I was looking for. I'll use the bottom half of plastic juice/milk containers. Thanks for the idea. I have a jar of many different screws and nails mixed together and I would love to organize them.
We have a similar assortment of fasteners collected over many decades... we set ourselves the requirement that whatever container we put most of them in would be lockable because I for one do not want to ever again have to pick them up when I drop a container like this that is open with no lid or with a lid that pops off when it's dropped. I managed to find some small containers in the plastic section at the Dollar tree that had the lockable snaps on four sides. They were two for a dollar and then some packages of the very same one were three for a dollar. Not bad imo. They also had a larger version. We've got these stacked in a vertical rack, labeled. the proof is in the pudding, they have been dropped on the floor some of them and simply returned to the rack. They did not break open. For the larger boxes of fasteners, and drywall screws and such, we didn't try to fit them in that rack. They are going on shelves below. I haven't decided containers for those yet. But they will have a lid!
Omg 😱😱😱 you have so much. Draw slides there's a guy who shows you how to make wooden ones but bit tricky like, time consuming. This is a boss idea for making bins. I'm also thinking of using clear water bottles and a few other ideas.
For me as far as nails and screws I use peanut butter jars or mayonnaise jars, and screw then to the bottom of my roof joists. I have a label maker to put the sizes on them, and I keep spare lids for when I am in the job sight with me when they are not on their ceiling mounts! And you could screw them to the bottom of the shelves as well!
Jars and coffee cans work a treat if you have the space! A lot of hardware I inherited from my late grandfather was stored in this way and I kept it like that for many years. I attached a few to the ceiling over the years also, just about the only advantage to the low ceilings of a basement shop.

The Plano boxes, at Wallie World, when I looked a few years ago, you get the same ones over in fishing tackle and in the craft section and in it seems like hardware and they'll be $2 in one section and $10 in another so check around if you are buying them somewhere.
im constantly moving shops garage to garage recently and i think i spend more time organizing and setting up the shops than actually getting porjects/work done, constantly thinking how i can improve the shop rather than just using it

Hmm. The red boxes are nice because of the angled accessibility. And they're on a french cleat system so you can hang them. But not a bad idea. What a neat shop! Complete with proto board! I see where you're going. Organization is a bane. No labeling might kind of confuse a guy like me. You are the Martha Stewart of the shop clan :-)

Cant ever have to many tool boxes or storage devices, and I really do love these inexpensive Harbor Freight ones. If I had more shop space id pick up half a dozen of them in a heartbeat.
A way to get drawer slides is to take them off of funture or cabinets people have put on the crub, many times your outdated older items will have really well made harware, I have a ton of this type of hardware as I always remove it before I purge any items that have it.

As an avid creator, and fabricator. You might want to look at using, used 1 quart oil containers, and cut them at the same height. You could check with all your friends or local oil shops and get them for free. Just a thought.
All those electronic parts you should look into ham radio! It's great fun, even if you just build your own equipment or antennas, station accessories. You are well equipped to build some nice stuff
Thanks for the comment! Seems like it could be fun, though I'm afraid it's time to narrow down my hobbies as it is... When I was in college and working for myself as a carpenter I had a lot more free time... Now I have a 4mo old baby and a salary position... Doesn't leave but a couple hours each night. I have far to many unfinished projects as it is so I am currently trying to get focused/ motivated to finish those.
As for drawer slides I look for computer desks people are throwing out or other cheap furniture....because the hardware can all be reused!! In fact Craig's List always has people giving away cheap furniture as well! And you can get shelf pins and hinges and all sorts of parts from these Saunders/ Walmart special, furniture!!
damn!!! so many stuff inside. meanwhile in philippines carpenters only use 1-hammer, 1-saw, and a bunch of nails then they create a very expensive looking things but cheap to create. note: 2-3 sizes only of nails can produce a lot of things.
True, the availability of cheap materials here in the US is debilitating at times... When you always have the right part you never have to think outside the box... Or on the other hand, you have plenty of parts that could work, buy your brain is telling you it wont and you need to go to the store for something else...
Cut off plastic oil cans- collect from gas station trash, etc.. Free, compact, disposable, use for liquids, put container in nail pouch as needed. Also cut off vitamin bottles. Various sizes nest. Open containers in drawers FTW. Find used drawer cabinets for free.

Ha ha thanks for watching! Glad you got something out of it, I enjoy learning from others and sharing what I know. At least I will be one of the most well organized hoarders they've filmed! ;) But seriously, I do all sorts of projects and these are simply my supplies. No different than a painters palette, a bakers pantry, or a writers library. I collect parts from broken items and buy stuff in bulk at times, I only save what I can someday use. Its a collection of parts that over the years has proven invaluable!

I was looking to organize it all and happened upon your video. It will take me months of solid work to get a handle on all of my stuff. It's pretty depressing. :(

Thanks! The smaller clear ones are Plano 3600 Series ProLatch Stowaway, the larger red ones are called Plano Double Cover Lockjaw. Remember, at least in my area, these regularly go on sale for about half the price!
Would be great in a "stationary workshop" where the hardware gets consumed at a nearby bench. Not so well when you want to remove them to take to a job, or climb on the roof, etc.
Quite true! I might experiment with melted milk bottles (jugs) as base material. I realise the plastics are differentbut the material comes free for experimenting although our downpipe is more rectangular but about 3 times the price here in Australia.
@@paulreader1777 I've been looking at doing the same thing, but yeah it's expensive in Oz. Still better than buying small storage containers from what I can find. I've been thinking of cutting the downpipe into smaller sections and in half again, then gluing in scrap MDF sides or bottoms.

Hi Justin. I love this idea! The problem that I've run into is when stapling the pvc to the wood, often the staple will split the pvc! I'm using 3/8" plywood. Any advice?
3/8" is pretty thin... You might try inserting two pieces of plywood and only staple the top one, the bottom one is just a spacer to lift it up so your staple isn't so close to the edge, it can be removed. Also, if the material you are using is old stock, or has been exposed to the sun for any length of time it might be extra brittle. If you still cant get the staples to go in you might try skipping this steep and just use more of an adhesive type caulk on the inside. You could always try a couple 3/8" #4 screws... Just depends how many of these bins you want to make, how strong they need to be, and what amount of time your willing to invest.
You have a hardware store on those shelves. I am pretty bad at going out and buying what I need and having a ton of leftovers. Next project, another shopping trip. But dude, you have taken that to new heights. I am Jealous. He who dies with the most hardware wins.
Sometimes I wish someone would just steal all my screws, bolts and nuts so that I could start from zero and only buy certain sizes or something. I've just got so many of them that I have no freaking idea how the hell I'm going to organize them all..
I do a little bit of everything. While I was in college I had my own carpentry business and I did a few machining jobs for hire but do it mostly as a hobby now. I just enjoy building things weather it is a mobile robot, piece of furniture, or CNC machine I just have fun with it. Been doing this stuff for 20+ years, I dont know I guess you always have hardware left over from a job and its hard to throw out good parts... Thanks for watching.

She literally dug big wholes and buried a lot of his nuts, and bolts, and other metals things not easily burnt... Yea that's what I saw at estate sales. The kids/family don't really care to have all the items that the home-owner possessed. So all the collection that the person did, is sold for pennies on the dollar to get rid of it.
I have at least 10 totes filled with all new stuff, guy stuff, tools, hardware and I don't have a clue. been there for over 10 years also.......I see what the problem is! you buy everything like I do for over the last 30 years and never use it, power washers, welders, table saws and to much to mention...
Over the years between tool boxes, tool carts, tackle boxes, and plastic totes well north of $800. But its a gradual thing and you dont buy everything all at once. I tend to buy when stuff is on sale and always buy in pairs, no idea why, I just do. Makes me mad when you find an organizer you like, go back to buy a couple more and they've changed the look, feel, and size... They dont stack with the others and what not... Those 11 drawer tool carts I like so much from Harbor Freight have already changed... Decided I wanted a third one so I went in the other day to pick one up, they changed it so there no longer offering it with the 3 drawer middle section... Now its the same price but only with 8 drawers. I dont mind if the price needs to fluctuate, I'm sure they did it to save on cost. But they could at least offer the middle section as an add on for like $60 or something...
That was a ball park estimate, I did say "well north of $800." Maybe its closer to $1200 but definitely not $2800, least I hope... Whatever the cost, doesn't really matter, does what I need it to do. Like I said in the video, I only buy stuff when its on sale. Storage containers go on sale so often you would be a fool to pay full price. I see stuff at 30-50% off all the time, include in-store rebates and you have yourself a deal!

I like the baby food jars and mason jars and screw the tops under the cabinet they screw on and off.

You could also cut the bottom off square plastic bottle, some water bottles are square, oil is sold in rectangular bottles, etc.
Great Idea!!! Hot glue would be great to seal cracks in these.

Use a contour gage to trace your shape and use a jig saw to cut your bottoms out
That downspout thing looks like the bottom of a milk cartons. That would make even cheaper ones. I may do that in future.

Brian Fuller I've been on a mission to change all my shop drawer slides to full extension. It's breaking my bank account but they are so much better.

damn!!! so many stuff inside. meanwhile in philippines carpenters only use 1-hammer, 1-saw, and a bunch of nails then they create a very expensive looking things but cheap to create. note: 2-3 sizes only of nails can produce a lot of things.
True, the availability of cheap materials here in the US is debilitating at times... When you always have the right part you never have to think outside the box... Or on the other hand, you have plenty of parts that could work, buy your brain is telling you it wont and you need to go to the store for something else...
If you let your wood show about 1/4” on the bottom, you could stack them.

Cut off plastic oil cans- collect from gas station trash, etc.. Free, compact, disposable, use for liquids, put container in nail pouch as needed. Also cut off vitamin bottles. Various sizes nest.
Open containers in drawers FTW. Find used drawer cabinets for free.

Ha ha thanks for watching! Glad you got something out of it, I enjoy learning from others and sharing what I know. At least I will be one of the most well organized hoarders they've filmed! ;) But seriously, I do all sorts of projects and these are simply my supplies. No different than a painters palette, a bakers pantry, or a writers library. I collect parts from broken items and buy stuff in bulk at times, I only save what I can someday use. Its a collection of parts that over the years has proven invaluable!

Confession; I'm just as bad, if not worse, about hoarding all sorts of things from and for various projects. I was looking to organize it all and happened upon your video. It will take me months of solid work to get a handle on all of my stuff. It's pretty depressing. :(

Thanks! The smaller clear ones are Plano 3600 Series ProLatch Stowaway, the larger red ones are called Plano Double Cover Lockjaw. Remember, at least in my area, these regularly go on sale for about half the price!
Since you are putting these in drawers you could dispense with the bases except for the smallest flattest parts.
Would be great in a "stationary workshop" where the hardware gets consumed at a nearby bench. Not so well when you want to remove them to take to a job, or climb on the roof, etc.

I might experiment with melted milk bottles (jugs) as base material. I realise the plastics are differentbut the material comes free for experimenting although our downpipe is more rectangular but about 3 times the price here in Australia.
@@paulreader1777 I've been looking at doing the same thing, but yeah it's expensive in Oz. Still better than buying small storage containers from what I can find. I've been thinking of cutting the downpipe into smaller sections and in half again, then gluing in scrap MDF sides or bottoms.

I love this idea! The problem that I've run into is when stapling the pvc to the wood, often the staple will split the pvc! I'm using 3/8" plywood. Any advice?
3/8" is pretty thin... You might try inserting two pieces of plywood and only staple the top one, the bottom one is just a spacer to lift it up so your staple isn't so close to the edge, it can be removed. Also, if the material you are using is old stock, or has been exposed to the sun for any length of time it might be extra brittle. If you still cant get the staples to go in you might try skipping this steep and just use more of an adhesive type caulk on the inside. You could always try a couple 3/8" #4 screws... Just depends how many of these bins you want to make, how strong they need to be, and what amount of time your willing to invest.
You have a hardware store on those shelves. I am pretty bad at going out and buying what I need and having a ton of leftovers. Next project, another shopping trip. But dude, you have taken that to new heights. I am Jealous. He who dies with the most hardware wins.

I do a little bit of everything. While I was in college I had my own carpentry business and I did a few machining jobs for hire but do it mostly as a hobby now. I just enjoy building things weather it is a mobile robot, piece of furniture, or CNC machine I just have fun with it. Been doing this stuff for 20+ years, I dont know I guess you always have hardware left over from a job and its hard to throw out good parts... Thanks for watching.

Yea that's what I saw at estate sales. The kids/family don't really care to have all the items that the home-owner possessed. So all the collection that the person did, is sold for pennies on the dollar to get rid of it.

If you have a dog, you can use Beneful dog food containers instead of those downspouts and they cost you nothing. You're going to feed the dog anyway.

I have at least 10 totes filled with all new stuff, guy stuff, tools, hardware and I don't have a clue. been there for over 10 years also.......I see what the problem is! you buy everything like I do for over the last 30 years and never use it, power washers, welders, table saws and to much to mention...

Over the years between tool boxes, tool carts, tackle boxes, and plastic totes well north of $800. But its a gradual thing and you dont buy everything all at once. I tend to buy when stuff is on sale and always buy in pairs, no idea why, I just do. Makes me mad when you find an organizer you like, go back to buy a couple more and they've changed the look, feel, and size... They dont stack with the others and what not... Those 11 drawer tool carts I like so much from Harbor Freight have already changed... Decided I wanted a third one so I went in the other day to pick one up, they changed it so there no longer offering it with the 3 drawer middle section... Now its the same price but only with 8 drawers. I dont mind if the price needs to fluctuate, I'm sure they did it to save on cost. But they could at least offer the middle section as an add on for like $60 or something...

That was a ball park estimate, I did say "well north of $800." Maybe its closer to $1200 but definitely not $2800, least I hope... Whatever the cost, doesn't really matter, does what I need it to do. Like I said in the video, I only buy stuff when its on sale. Storage containers go on sale so often you would be a fool to pay full price. I see stuff at 30-50% off all the time, include in-store rebates and you have yourself a deal!
Justin Hulbert Well, I wish my garage was half as organized,as your shop is. I'm SO embarrassed. Ever consider cutting off the bottoms of quarts of oil or grocery drink bottles for drawer organizers? I use a lot of food containers like what cole slaw comes in, but I'm not so happy with the taper.
