I always refer back to this video for instructions!! I just saw this template in metal is selling for $109 by one of the seed vendors!! Thank you for offering these instructions!!
I'm kind of late to this video, but I had a quick question about securing the hoops straight into the ground since we don't have raised beds. Would it work to just pound rebar stakes into the ground and let them stick up 6 inches, and then put these hoops directly onto the rebar? Or do you think there is a more secure way to get these into the ground? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated :) Thank you!!
Thanks Patty. There is likely a formula, but I didn't pay close enough attention in geometry class. Take some flexible tubing, such as black poly tubing, and spring clamp it onto a work surface with the arc and height that you desire (32" x 3' for example). Lay a 2' long piece of 3/4" plywood under the arc, in the top center. Make the board wide enough so there is ample height on the sides, once the arc is cut. Center the plywood so that it is even on both sides. Trace the inside of the arc onto the plywood, cut it out, and make your bender. Measure up on the sides to find where you want to start the bend, to give the hoop vertical legs. This is generally about 18" up on an 8' length of 1/2" conduit. If only 32" wide, you might want even shorter hoops. To finish the bend, a piece of 3/4" conduit, added to the end, gives you more leverage to finish such a tight bend. Good luck!
@@backwoodbasics9383 I understand some of the instructions and get lost on some others. Would it be possible for you to make a video of this procedure so i could make any size bender? Your videos are wonderful on the benders and how to bend the pipe and have *existing* plywood patterns already made up. Maybe start from the very beginning of planning and show a mock up instruction on how to *make* the PLYWOOD PATTERN. Maybe put your instructions to the above response to me into a video. i think think it may help some who would like to make different size hoops.
Hopefully your move has gone well! Would also love to see the "how you create your bender" type video so those of us with more unique sizes beds could make our own. Absolutely love your video and the knowledge you share.
I did not have time this summer, so just flipped our former 6' wide former chicken pen over a bed of peppers. Our hoophouse is 12 feet wide, but 8' high, which may be higher than you need. The bender would be the same, however. Before the snow flies, I will try to get a video out on how to make that bender.
@@hugh3464 I hope to make a video on how I build the end walls-including how to make and use a bender to make the 12' hoops. Since we still have about 8" of snow on the ground, though, it will have to wait a month or so. Thanks for the feedback.

Yes, The metal benders have more than doubled in price. I actually think the wood benders work better, for a fraction of the cost.
The Conduit King!
Ha. I wish it was $3 again though.
@@backwoodbasics9383 Me too. It is almost $6 by me.
Great video. Veri informative. Thank you
Thanks Charles. Much appreciated!

They could be simply pushed into the ground. Reber is more for securing pvc pipe, since it does not hold its shape on its own.
Can you help with a hoop bender pattern for a 32" wide bed. Is there a formula to follow? Thank you for all the info. Great job!

@@pattyf3984 I can do that. It just would have to wait until closer to spring, and reasonable temps.

Hello, do you have any wood benders for sale? If so how can I buy one from you?
Sorry, no. If you know someone with some simple tools, perhaps they could make one for you?
@@backwoodbasics9383 thanks!
Are these for 4' wide bed?
Yes. We use them on our 4' wide raised bed frames.
@@backwoodbasics9383 thks...we just built 4 raised beds; i think some covers are in order.
Did you make your low tunnel hoop garden? I need to make one 12 feet wide.

What type of metal is the tube you use?
It is 1/2" EMT (electrical metallic tubing). They used to be about $3 for a 10' length. Now they are closer to $6.
Is there a video where you discuss making the wooden frames? Thanks.I found it. ua-cam.com/video/7fN5lERaUow/v-deo.html
