Ulterior Motives has to be one of my favorite lost media searches ever. There were so many theories, and it got mainstream attention. Then it turns out the story behind the song was nothing like we expected--the truth being hidden by the very guy who sparked the search himself, Carl92
@StevenWrightLLC It being spread to TikTok didn’t help the search either. completely agreed. like would he rather there was a 4-year long search for something lost, harassing various people connected to a project for any kind of thing they have related to it, being let down various times and believing the case to be cold, only to finally get something from someone only indirectly connected to it? which, unless it was the actual company themselves releasing it (in the case of a cartoon pilot), would still be considered a leak as well? The spirit of lost media is the preservation, if it got found by a leak with no fanfare, that's fine, because the media has been preserved, which is the most important thing to a lost media search
11:37 In this case, yes, they aren't losing money from this; they aren't losing reputation; they aren't losing anything from these pilot leaks, so yes, it's good.
Ulterior Motives is technically still lost since they couldn't find the original master tape of it. They had to re-record it to release the new 80s album. A bit of a shame. Let's hope it gets found someday!!
They found a higher quality version of the corn movie that also had a higher quality version of the song but sadly the moans are still in there and the ai they use to remove them would lower the quality again
LSSQ seems very full of himself in regards to his importance in the lost media community. It’s great he’s so involved and it’s no question that his videos has helped many get into lost media but I feel like he always emphasizes his involvement in everything
Seems a bit silly to say leaks "aren't in the spirit of lost media", tbh. Most found media are discovered and posts unofficially and unauthorized. Many are technically leaked. If you did get Me and My Friends from someone who worked on it, that would be a leak since they likely aren't the official copyright holder. Cracks (the Sesame Street short) was very likely leaked from someone who had access to it but wasn't the owner or copyright holder. Ripping and posting a VHS tape of a lost Nickelodeon short is illegal copyright infringement. The only way to find media completely legally is to either convince the copyright holder(s) to release it themselves, which we all know by now is not likely, or wait like a hundred years for the work to pass into the public domain and then post it which has some pretty obvious problems if you're searching for anything more recent than the 1930s. Frankly, copyright and trademark law are your enemy if you are a media preservationist/lost media enthusiast. I'm not saying copyright law is 100% bad (as a creator I certainly like parts of it!) but it is what allows works to be locked away indefinitely and archives to be destroyed.
I disagree with your opinion about leaks. Unless the leak is actually hurting the creators/companies, I don't think it's a bad thing. None of those pilots were hurting anyone by being released. It's a good thing for people who are interested in seeing that kind of stuff too. Imagine how much of this stuff just sits in the company's archives, but they don't release it just because it's not profitable. I hope the rise of interest in this kind of thing will change that.
A lot of lost media tubers say stuff like that as kind of a legal thing in case a big company that owns the copyright comes after them for encouraging followers.
@@AppropriateusernameUA-cam I just found that other comment. Whoops. 🤣 Go down to that comment, I guess. It has some interesting replies on this subject.

Other fun facts!: this year, a ton of vocaloid lost media has been found too!! An especially big two was subspace255 and just like trivial garbage by Dr.willy! :))
What is the right way? Does he expect Shigeru Miyamoto to just burst through the walls like Kool-Aid Man and say, "Behold, my children, I have found the only remaining copy of Slamfest '99!" That would be amazing, but that's not how this kind of stuff works.
That take on leaks was bad. In this case, it's not like somebody was maliciously releasing the pilots to upcoming shows. There is SO much stuff out there collecting dust. Some leaks release stuff that no one knew about, or if they did, nobody was going to find it. Lost media is about preservation. It doesn't matter if it's not an "interesting" story to make a video about, it matters that we have it.
Last June a VHS recording of a previously unknown 1976 episode of Chapulin Colorado was discovered by fans of the show. This series is the Doctor Who of Latin America in terms of lost episodes. It also has its own lostwave mystery, the 'Chapolin Polka BGM' that remains unsolved for little over a decade.
I’m honestly glad that Ulterior Motives was found. Too many people were trying to claim it was AI or that Carl92 made the song and disappeared off the internet on purpose to make people think it was real
yeah there’s no right/wrong way to find media, especially if a leak is really the only way to get ahold of it. who cares if it makes for a good story, the whole point of LM is to archive and that’s what the leaks allow
Dude, your complaining about a company having leaks to their old lost pilots. It's ok if someone took a screen recording but if someone saved the file back in the day its suddenly wrong. Thats such a weird take from a yt channel that talks about preserving media.
While I don't agree with the point he was making (imo it seemed more focus on telling the story for content over the actual preservation) I can see why leaks wouldn't be ideal, as many companies, especially Disney, even when they're not making money from the IPs in question, they will cling onto that IP and by releasing the pilots without their permission, they can make the claim of it being piracy, which, if they wanted, could result in legal action being taken, which means not only would the content become lost again but, it could result in places like The Internet Archive and any platform with the content on it being sued and depending on how big they are, shut down, resulting in even more things becoming lost again
Bruh, at this point I'm wondering if Big Star Secret is the only piece of lost media that you truly care about. Like I'm sorry if I sound mean, but when will you STFU about it??
...Also, I heavily, HEEEEEEAVILY disagree with the notion that "getting tons of pilots quick and easy out of nowhere" is a "cheat code" or "cheats the lost media community out of a good hunt" or whatever. The purpose of this stuff is preservation of media, not a *game* for people to play, regardless of how many people have morphed it into that in their own heads. That's such a... wildly selfish, immature take. There's also no "right way" or "wrong way" to do this, or any rules to follow; the one and only goal should be to have media catalogued and not let it be fully lost or forgotten, it's all about keeping information from being lost, there is no "bad way" or "proper way" to go about it.
big disagree on your takes on leaks, unless its actually affecting the profits of the creators/companies by leaking (none of those pilots wouldve) its not hurting anybody and is a net good to have that art out for people to enjoy who are interested. it makes me sad how much stuff like that just sits in company archives and because its not profitable they do nothing with them. hopefully the interest in these leaks changes that view slowly.
I'm inclined to agree. The point about the "story" of it kind of gives me the impression that his perspective is a little bit skewed as someone who makes videos talking about this stuff - Getting this stuff dropped in our lap is objectively a win but for the UA-camrs talking about what happened, it's less exciting "material".
It can hurt the creators and companies in one way. Because these pilots are technically the intellectual properties of the creators, any unlicensed use of copywritten music has the potential of landing them in legal hot water. This is especially a problem when the pilot is tied to a show that has been greenlit.
Dude, not only did I literally binge every one of your videos YESTERDAY, but I also JUST got done watching Whangs compilation! Oh, & I danced to Not Like Us like 5 times 😂 & now this?!?! Guys it's truly a National Holiday 😊
Came back to this and the delivery of it made me hear the Homelander violins lol😂 You'll cover the story in your video for the views but shit on someone for not doing it how you want? How is THAT the right way?
I don't think leaking is inherently bad. I think intellectual property is a dubious concept at best and I don't really see why you would get that upset about someone leaking the pilot to a show. "It's using someone else's content without their permission!" I mean I guess, but if the missing pilot is just rotting in vault, the artists and the rights holders are earning absolutely nothing off of it anyways. The only time I would agree that leaking is bad is if it is a security risk; leaks sensitive personal material such as nonconsensual nudity, a person's death, or something else the creator is not comfortable sharing; or the leaker uses it for immoral purposes, such as profiting off of it or claiming it as their own work.
Earlier this year 2 of 3 lost episodes the original 1963 Astro boy anime were found! Apologies of you’ve covered this already, if so I haven’t seen that video, but as a big Astro boy fan it’s something I was very excited about.
What exactly is ethically wrong about posting the pilot to a TV show that a billion-dollar Mega Corporation has already made its money from? Who's taking the L to make ethics enter this at all?
This is great year for Lostwave especially. Just a Game, Back to Bed, EKT, and several others being found gives me hope that CIA and TMS can be found, too.
7:50 I met Lincoln Peirce at the Maine Comics Arts Fest a few years ago lol. You could try reaching out to Casablanca Comics about getting in touch with him, since they ran the con.
EKT being from an adult movie reminds me of Caravan Palace's first work as a bad, which they did for an unreleased French adult movie. The band has said that they probably still have a copy somewhere, but not a lot of people seem interested in raising awareness to get it released
Your take on leaks is the dumbest shit i've heard in a long time we're not talking about leaking things early that are supposed to release and make money later down the line, we are talking about leaking content that otherwise never would've been made publicly available AT ALL, EVER. the only negative side to leaks is when a game/tv/movie production has leaks BEFORE the release, thus influencing the outcome of the actual release. But a bunch of pilots for shows that either have been running for years now or were never made ???? Literally 0 harm in that.
I agree. Unless it's super private, like perhaps a death video or something like that, I think leaks are fine. Like with the wicked witch episode of Sesame Street, sometimes it's the only way the public can get ahold of this stuff when it shouldn't be restricted in the first place.
Yea, he's not doing any favors to his reputation by saying that. It's not like there will be a drout of lost media, there will always be things missing for him to look for. Really odd comment, and he's said that a few times too in diff videos.
20:23 it was a remake, not a remaster. The synths, guitars, and vocals were redone. The version Carl92 wanted is still unable to be heard without the background noises or some ai filtering.
Already mentioned this in a past video, but there’s actually a Wordgirl book that’s lost media. It’s called The Amazing Thing, and only a picture of the cover and the description can be found. I made a post about it on the fourms.
Better get used to things being leaked. Its an easy way for a company (or individual) to bypass the otherwise tangled legal status that can often accompany lost media like pilots or banned episodes, even though philosophically the creator agrees with releasing it.
Feels so surreal seeing better quality footage of Big Star Secret after all this time. Kinda feels like a reward for nearly 3 years of me being invested in the search :D
EKT is actually still only partially found, not only because of the messy audio, but also the song played in the film fades abruptly, meaning there's likely more to the original master audio not included in the remaster.
I do have the opinion that lost media should be allowed to be posted to sites dedicated solely to archiving and preservation of said media and shouldn't necessarily be be posted to sites like UA-cam where said posters could be doing it to gain profit instead of for the sake of preservation. That way there would be a "safe" place where only what can be accurately identified as actually being said lost media could be properly archived and probably would be less likely to immediately just be removed. I do think that pilots of shows, especially shows that have already been through their run or have no chance of ever being made should be archived and made available to view by request even if they are not publicly available. I understand that many show writers and animators don't necessarily *want* their early/failed works to be publicly available for the general public to see but it would be nice for there to be a platform where you could request to see said content, either for private curiosity of the medium or for specific research, with the understanding that it isn't to be shared beyond that platform. Such a platform that gives credibility and security might make those who hold lost media and just don't want to say they have it or want to have it be on UA-cam because they know it likely will be stolen and distributed beyond what is controllable might be more willing to allow it in a protected archive instead. The only problem is there inevitably will be the jerk that pirates something from the archive and posts it on UA-cam and ruins it for everyone...
About the Disney TVA leak of pilots and pitch bibles, it is indeed true that these originated from 4chan, specifically in a thread that was intended to stir up a conversation about Martin & Yolotzin, another leaked Disney TVA thing, but seemingly not connected to the leaks of all the other stuff. Now about the ethics about the leaks and stuff, while I can't deny the practice being seen as icky, I did finally conclude that leaks can be separated into three categories; First, the leaks that share content that never would've been released otherwise, much like that cancelled Popeye movie, and Bremen Musicians from prior years (plus from what I've seen, the involved people that worked on these pilots, like Matt Danner on Shred Force and Mega Mega Whoosh, as well as SF's creator Matt Maiellaro, seem to be pretty chill with it, based simply on the fact that finally people are getting to enjoy what didn't get the chance to be seen). Second, the ambassador's look; Depending on the circumstances, these leaks can be good _and/or_ bad; Sugary Spire for example, the devs only intended for Demo 1 to be the only demo build, so at the same time with its slow development this kinda leaves itself with a bit of playable drought, while two playtest builds from 2023 show how some of the levels after Sugarshack Mines are coming along. Primos also falls under "The Ambassador's Look" and the first one, as the first two episodes did leak in full, and with all their original elements intact, which will not be retained for their proper release. Then the third one is firework-smuggling; I saw a 4chan anon share the behind-the-scenes contents of the Glitch Inn, which were only meant to be for paying customers. I'm pretty sure that's only one that truly counts as just a bad leak.
That Uncle Gus pilot looks so good? That's a ton of effort to put into a pilot, down to the shadows having detailed motion cycles. I'm so happy we have it now, I wish I could show it to 11yo me
To me, the EKT search won’t truly be over until we find a studio recording of the original song. I applaud Christopher for remaking the song, but his vocals sound rough, especially on the high parts. I know this is not his fault, as he is getting older. I am still so grateful that he put in the work for the fans, and we got an unreleased album of amazing tracks like Chemistry.
20:30 to be clear the song was not from an adult movie, it was made prior to being included in the movie. It was made for the sake of making music not specifically for porn.
I remember joking with other people in the ekt search server about the theory of the song being from an adult film a while before it was found. Guess I can't be laughing anymore.
As much as I would have loved to hear the original, I am glad we got a remaster of Ulterior Motives. I’m obsessed with it. And the Booth bros seem like super cool guys.
I remember when the ni hao kai lan stuff was found, and someone on twitter was yapping about how "lost media hunters only look for kids media and not actual important stuff" when that is so blatantly untrue.
surprised you didn't mention La Cancion De Alicia/Dreams 4ever. That song was on par with Ulterior Motives in terms of its mysteriousness, and was one of the few Lostwave songs with a LMW page. The song wasn't even officially released before it was identified, it only existed as a demo and an amateur live performance video, and the only person on the Internet who had the song was the same person who made the original Alice in Wonderland edit with it. It was found by PURE CHANCE, someone was talking about Lostwave to someone else and played them the snippet and the other person was like "Oh I know that band! They're an obscure Peruvian group called Bad Influence and I heard them play it". The live performance was found on their Facebook page, confirming the song was theirs, and closing the search.
What about the new content we got from the early version of Foodfight? We got new clips of early animation as well as a workprint. That's another significant highlight of this year IMO. Kudos to Ziggy Cashmere for uncovering that.
Fast forward 4 months and one of the biggest lost media mysteries ever has been solved. The most mysterious song on the net has been identified and the band behind it has been found and even performed the song acoustically on the radio
I disagree about leaks. For me ot doesnt matter how lost media is found, as long as its found. Sure a big search can be interesting to cover on youtube, but if the media is never found then a leak as just as good for people who actually want the media found.
I can say that the later stages of the hunt for Everyone Knows That had captivated me during a stay in the hospital awaiting a heart transplant. I spent days trying to search and combing through the reddit page, hoping something would turn up. April made 6 months post transplant, and I had just gotten back from visiting my grandparents for the first time in a while. I came back home, sat down, opened reddit, and there it was. Lost my shit. Was and is definitely THE find of the decade.
If old deleted jumpscare videos are considered lost media, I have one. It was a man holding a small dog and trying to get it to say "I love you", but then after a few seconds, a man with a painted face would scream at the viewer. I've been trying to find this video but my guess it's been deleted. r/tipofmytongue was no help, they found another doggy jumpscare video, but it was much longer, much less scary, and lacks the painted face man... On another note, I recreated a lost video myself recently on a channel I operate for myself and a few friends. The original video was called "Hypnotiz'd" and it was a series of sorts that was deleted at some point. I recreated the first one using a reaction video to it as a reference.
I’m never rejoining the lmw server, I did my own research for the breaking bad game, and actually got a lead, believe it was a new one. Contacted them, went well, they said they might have the game(s) in some office in a drive or so. I told the server then staff was like shut up only we can do leads, I get why, since they said that they lost a lead for big star secret or something because people bothered the lead, not sure. If I ever find lost media, it’s a vigilante effort.
I'm hoping more foster bumps get found. There are some I wanna dub as "interview" where this was around the time of its first airing (if I remember correctly). One in particular I remember is where Edwardo is in like a forest or dark setting and the female narrator says something only for Edwardo to go "Who's there?" and the narrator speaks again only for Edwardo to get scared and run off with the narrator saying something about watch foster's on cartoon network I think in a whisper. There were several of these. One was Walt, one was Coco and I think Duchess had one as well, one of the rare promos with her in it. I loved these bumpers since it was the most realistic. It is similar to the style of the ones recently found with "where's bloo".

You would be right on a legal standpoint, but your arguments aren’t about legality. They’re commenting on the possibility (not definite) of the motives of people, on what they deserve as people. And you call it theft, despite it being made public, and not restricted? How is this depriving the original holders of that material? Theyll have it, but now so can other users.
In conclusion, I fail to see the validity in your points. And whats your problem? Who are you to decide the moral and ethical fabric of recovering lost media?
Hey we got a comedian over here!
If im a Degenerate Narcissistic Egotist for wanting to not let media that isnt "legally" mine and wont be open to the public for Over A Century be lost, Then So Be It.

Yep
There was a guy I remember that just shared tons of live-action series the kind you would find on Disney Jr, you just needed to ask him and he'd use his contacts or collection to just...share them.
most lost media is found through leaks
The spirit of lost media is the preservation, if it got found by a leak with no fanfare, that's fine, because the media has been preserved, which is the most important thing to a lost media search
"we've searched for topics the right way" what an unhinged, insane, gatekeeping thing to say regarding lost media of all things

Taking a leak doesn't hurt anyone
i don’t feel bad about it since the majority of lost media are vintage and it’s just fun to witness what’s found every year
Ulterior Motives is technically still lost since they couldn't find the original master tape of it. They had to re-record it to release the new 80s album. A bit of a shame. Let's hope it gets found someday!!
As far as i understood it they only couldn't find the master vocals but everything else is from the original tapes
They found a higher quality version of the corn movie that also had a higher quality version of the song but sadly the moans are still in there and the ai they use to remove them would lower the quality again
They're still looking for it so I'm hopeful!

Also, leaking a little bit of something before it comes out builds up hype.
These two are excited when they leak poo outside
Last June a VHS recording of a previously unknown 1976 episode of Chapulin Colorado was discovered by fans of the show. This series is the Doctor Who of Latin America in terms of lost episodes. It also has its own lostwave mystery, the 'Chapolin Polka BGM' that remains unsolved for little over a decade.

EKT being from an adult movie reminds me of Caravan Palace's first work as a bad, which they did for an unreleased French adult movie. The band has said that they probably still have a copy somewhere, but not a lot of people seem interested in raising awareness to get it released
Your take on leaks is the dumbest shit i've heard in a long time
we're not talking about leaking things early that are supposed to release and make money later down the line, we are talking about leaking content that otherwise never would've been made publicly available AT ALL, EVER.
the only negative side to leaks is when a game/tv/movie production has leaks BEFORE the release, thus influencing the outcome of the actual release.

Just say the full name Ulterior Motives
the goal of finding lost media is to find and document said media, not to build an "interesting history" with the search...
Truly a way to celebrate the 4th of July.!.!
10:18 LOOK MA IT'S ME! Anyway good video as always! 👍
About the Disney TVA leak of pilots and pitch bibles, it is indeed true that these originated from 4chan, specifically in a thread that was intended to stir up a conversation about Martin & Yolotzin, another leaked Disney TVA thing, but seemingly not connected to the leaks of all the other stuff. Now about the ethics about the leaks and stuff, while I can't deny the practice being seen as icky, I did finally conclude that leaks can be separated into three categories;
First, the leaks that share content that never would've been released otherwise, much like that cancelled Popeye movie, and Bremen Musicians from prior years (plus from what I've seen, the involved people that worked on these pilots, like Matt Danner on Shred Force and Mega Mega Whoosh, as well as SF's creator Matt Maiellaro, seem to be pretty chill with it, based simply on the fact that finally people are getting to enjoy what didn't get the chance to be seen).
We might've not gotten "Uncle Gus," but we got Uncle Grandpa, who so happens to be friends with a guy named "Mr Gus," so.... coincidence?
That Uncle Gus pilot looks so good? That's a ton of effort to put into a pilot, down to the shadows having detailed motion cycles. I'm so happy we have it now, I wish I could show it to 11yo me
Great video as usual.
A trailer for the canceled Foodfight game was recently found.
20:30 to be clear the song was not from an adult movie, it was made prior to being included in the movie. It was made for the sake of making music not specifically for porn.

surprised you didn't mention La Cancion De Alicia/Dreams 4ever.

17:10 Definitely a big find, but do you think it’s bigger/meaningful than the find of the original back rooms photos?
