I believe this is the single best drill I’ve seen in a long time. I’ve had trouble breaking 100 lately and I decided to try playing exclusively with the hitchhiker drill. First round I shot a 97. One week later second row 94. Gained consistency stayed on the fairways and lost very little distance. Thank you, Andrew.
I’ve taken about a 10 one-on-one lessons with Coach Emery. He has completely changed my game. The best thing about Andrew is that he taught me how to understand what a good swing looks like and feels like. I was completely broken when I took my first lesson( shooting around 120) and now I have confidence and mental acuity to shoot in the low 90s. He is simply amazing!!

im in thailand atm helping to rehabilitate after a heart attack in December, ima club golfer hcap14, whose golf was suspended of course due to the attack, anyhoo i came across your vid here and went to the local range and did the drill(s) even though i hadnt played a shot for three months i had an amazing session, striking some what were obviously terrific shots with penetration and flight, i must admit i had to discipline myself to convince that i was not 'flipping' as some mistaken respondees say is happening, as long as one fully extends whilst enabling those wrists produces wonderful shots and straight to, i went and played 9 holes the other day and shot 43 doing your wrist release ! this included two sloppy 7's which were short game mistakes, bad chips putts etc, extend normally you don't 'flip' in a sense you have to have faith, the face squares itself 'naturally' my fellow players were very complimentary about the effortless look of my swing and the distances i was getting , and i was/am a bit shocked at the results, cant wait to get back to my club in the UK for the new season now !! cheers ps the body etc release simply is too hard for the mass of average players, and its nothing short of madness in many cases older less physically able trying to play like Rory etc

I just came back from the range and I have never hit it better!!!!!!!!!!! OMG I am a very big fan at this point. I am AMAZED at how good I was hitting the ball. It was literally amazing.
Releasing club head speed through lead wrist extension is a beautiful thing especially if it’s your first time! Remember despite some of the comments on this video you’re NOT flipping, you’re simply giving your speed a place to go is all! You learned to articulate your wrists correctly which transferred speed to the club head with very little torque to your body and no effort whatsoever! I’m a beginner golfer of 3 months and you’ve done wonders for my swing. The angular speed vs linear speed comparison really flipped a switch and really answered a lot of doubts I had. I still have a lot of work to do to properly control my swing and consistency but as a beginner I’m really happy with how it’s going so far. Thank you!

Very worthwhile for me. I think over the past few years I have been watching online teaching that was more suited to teaching professionals, as opposed to amateur's. My hands have been far too passive. Even though the pupil was a young man, for me as a senior, this instruction makes a great deal more sense in terms of the clubhead release. Many thanks.

Keep your back facing the target as you transition. Vast majority of golfers jump out early with their body. The best players in the world allow their arms to ‘drop’ twice as far and twice as fast in the transition compared with amateur golfers. These drills help that feel for sure. Get after it! Andrew just on this point that you make here is the correct downswing motion a feeling of dropping the arms before any body rotation & letting the hands unhinging into impact. As opposed to dragging the arms by your turning torso which I can't do anyway. I love this angular speed idea but am I relying on the arms down to move my mass to my front side or is there a deliberate move to the front leg before the arms drop down & unhinge. ie.am I correct in thinking that the body will turn correctly by the arms falling & hands unhinging then rehinging.?
Andrew, more than anything, I appreciate that you are a true gentleman in your responses to all the posts. Preaching to the choir but students of the game know that there are many different ways to square the club face and get power. I’ll be trying this at the range.
A lesson once given to me years ago (which I forgot about) stressed these same principles. It’s true because my teacher had me cracking 7 irons with feet together with great results. Why I dismissed what was sound advice, I don’t know. I’m so glad 30 years later along comes a video as a reminder of utmost value. Thank you Andrew.
I love to see this kind of teaching. One of the most common flaws I see in beginning older students with limited athletic ability. Stiff-wristed trying to shovel and “lift” the ball down the fairway, standing up out of their posture, etc. etc. etc. Really nice to see an old school teacher just get in there, hands on and so simply explain the elusive motion part of the golf swing as opposed to static “position” teaching and a zillion data driven metric points that seems to be the trend today. Very well explained coach. I tried this out at the range today and my shots were consistently a club length further with the angular speed that was being developed. I did this drill and practiced it from my wedges through to 2-iron, which by the way went 237yds whereas previous it was 220-223 and I wasn’t even giving it full effort.
I always hear golfers saying "need new clubs I'll buy some with stronger lofts " theyll help me hit the ball farther! Then you tell them it's your swing thats holding them back, of course they don't buy into that. Andrew great video this isn't taught enough. You just got another subscriber! Excellent lesson, Sir. This young man has been watching too many UA-cam pros teaching forward shaft lean, holding the lag, delayed release and all the other twaddle. You have just saved him from serious back problems in his 20s (eg Will Zalatoris).
I've been doing this feet together drill this past winter in the house. Not only it is great for the wrist hinging, it is helping my balance and feel for turning. Been using a G-Force swing trainer club since I'm not swinging 100% speed. The intent is it repeat the process to ingrain the feel. Recent range time is showing great progress.

Great drill for getting back to the basics ... no paralysis by analysis here ... I have finally realized with my body type I had better use arm, hands, and wrist action and this falls in place. Thanks! Start at the finish position looking at your target and hold for a couple of seconds. Feel in balance! Then reverse swing to the top of your backswing before returning to the same balanced finish!! Remember STICK your finish again for two seconds before repeating several times. Work on your cadence and then simply allow the ball to get in the way when you’re ready to hit it! Simply swing THROUGH to the same balanced finish position! Keep it simple and get after it! So I've been practicing this at home for a few days and then I went to the range and I've never hit the ball so crisp, but like you mention in your newer video I'm now hitting big hooks with my long irons. Which is fine, body rotation is the next thing to work on, in conjunction with finding what release works for me. Thanks for putting this video up, it's a really clear articulation of how to get a feel of something important in the swing.

One of the most salient responses I’ve had to date! 🙏🏻 It’s not all hands/arms any more than all body but for the vast majority of golfers - a tension free golf “swing” allowing the ball to be captured, will always do better than a violent disruption with the body by someone hitting AT the ball. These drills all encapsulate that idea! I think it’s been helpful! FYI - Be careful that you don’t get stuck on your back foot as you graduate into the longer clubs. The arms still need the “support” of the body! Get after it! 👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻
@@AndrewEmeryGolf Ha, it's as if you knew what was coming! So I've been putting a lot of work prior to this in rotating the hips and trying to get my weight over to the lead leg earlier to start the rotation, but I absolutely felt like I was getting stuck on the back foot and spinning the club up, rather than down. You make the point in another one of your videos about loading the trail leg to then push off into the lead and I've been trying to implement that. It really feels like that loading of the trail leg allows me to push my weight through to the lead side, and then rotate the club down down as I'm pushing up. Allowing me to get through the ball and out into my finish position. It became really apparent to me at the range how useful this was, as the shots where I mistimed or I didn't get the push right, I was blocking the shot. But when the rotate happened earlier the club face is in a more closed position at impact creating the sidespin to bring the ball back to target. It also feels effortless. It then gave me the sensation that the amount of energy I put into the push of the trail and then pop from the lead would increase the force of the club and thus distance, so I could control that a bit more. Alternating between pushing harder and increasing dispersion or calming it down and regaining accuracy. It was a fun session. Thanks again!

This is why great swings look effortless. The speed comes from the hinging, unhinging and the follow thru hinging. I was a linear swinging golfer for so long, it looked like I was swinging fast, but wasn't producing speed. I always practice on the range for at least a half hour to an hour to work in that hinge sequence.
Hi Andrew ! Love your videos. I have a difficult question Love to know your views descriptively. In my practice swing i have more hips close, chest close, more shallow(inside) right path like severe draw but in actual swing with ball , mind compensates with hips, shoulders open, left path for hitting straight shot till impact and then in follow through also the swing path goes to the right till one moment before finish. and then it goes to normal at last and manages to get a straight shot. Because if it replicates practice swings then I can miss the ball. In other words at practice the swing club is more behind at the delivery position and in actual swing the club is more outside at the delivery position. I think if I fix this open move in Actual swing by making a close move with my body then I am doing the wrong fix. Because it is fake open. So If I Fix like a severe draw move (which happens in practice swing) By making my Hips more open in downswing then it is the right fix. But not sure. Do you see such pattern? How would you fix this?
That’s a lot to unpack! Firstly get off the range and play as much as you can. It doesn’t matter what you do in practice if you can’t transfer it to the golf course. Pay attention to your ball flight on the golf course. Is it missing right or left, is it slicing or pushing. Is it hooking or pulling? The body is powerful but the hands are fast Paul! One requires more strength, effort, and mobility the other does not! The key is finding what works best for you! Thanks for watching! The speed has to go somewhere…..his swing center is still rotating and his hands remain to the side of the golf club! As with all drills the key is to exaggerate the feel, for the vast majority of golfers hitting a hook is rare. It’s a huge step forward in fact to improving and gives you permission to work on body dynamics! These drills helps golfers unlock the joints in the wrists, elbows and shoulders which is a huge problem in golf today. I tried this setting the wrists early in the back swing. Seemed to work really well with my 54 degree sand wedge for 50 yard shots. But when I tried it on 75 yard shots I came up way short. Only could hit them about 60 yards. I normally carry the ball 70 - 80 yards with that club.
Dave - thanks for reaching out! I have my students control distance with the length of their swings. In particular the through swing. 1/2 swing - waist high 3/4 swing -shoulder high Full swing - full finish! You should see 7-10 yards of additional distance for each shot, and of course a higher trajectory as you graduate to the full follow through. It’s odd to me that you weren’t hitting it further as you lengthened your swing. Momentum alone should increase speed - unless you were scooping (adding loft) rather than rotating the club face through impact! Try monitoring the length of your finish again. This is a steal from Andrew. Indeed, he's giving us a gold tip which is so powerful to generate that wrist angular momentum force applies to the ball impact just two and a half feet from your right thigh downward. The key is to keep that grip loosen, IMO.
Andrew, is there a difference between releasing the wrists and “rolling” the wrists. I know rolling the wrists can be seen as more of a short-term fix to square the face and is frowned upon.
I’m not a huge fan of “rolling” the wrists simply because it requires a high (ROC) Rate of Closure. I’m big on fundamentals and believe that the hands should remain to the side of the golf club for the vast majority of golfers out there throughout the release. Neither under or over the handle!! Awesome. If you've ever seen that "Hanger" swing aid, that helped me a ton with wrist set as well as top of backswing position immediately. I literally have a big red welt on my left wrist, it works though.

Tried it at the range today, gained 10-20 yards on full shots, and yeah i had to learn that this is way different compared to flipping! Ive never hit my irons so pure! Massive thanks! This method + a good body rotation = effortless speed and distance
I definitely prefer this swing over a modern (body rotation) swing because I’m a feel player. But I’m my opinion, you have to be careful because you are more prone to flipping with this swing. You just have to make sure you’re not unhinging too early. Where the modern swing, you’re essentially controlling the swing with your body and you rotate your club down and around with very little re-hinge or folding over of the arms on the follow though. Problem for me is while I noticed I can get a lower ball flight and a tad more distance with the body swing, I actually have worse control in terms of distance and line. I’ll sacrifice the 10 yards and be more accurate with this swing in the video.
@@kdub3288 In my case I try to incorporate both. I'm currently rotating my body quite a lot but most of my misses are pushes to the right. Currently as it stands this drill helps me either hit really straight shots or slight draws! it also helps me give the correct dynamic loft which in turn increases the spin, height and distance of my shots
@@HorusE your misses right are likely due to your hands falling behind the body too much and you don’t let them catch up to square the face. That’s what one of my issues was too when I tried the body rotation swing. You can compensate for it by starting with a stronger grip or slightly closed face at address. The more shaft lean you have too, the more open the face will be at impact if you start with a square face at setup. But yea this swing technique will also help eliminate the pushes. You have to be careful about what aspect your intermixing because not all aspects from each swing will work together. For example, a stronger grip will square the face with a body rotation follow through but it will cause you to likely pull or hook if you use the arm rotation and rehinge follow through. They’re different swing techniques that require a different setup and follow through.
@@kdub3288 That's probably spot on to the issues I have with my swing. Funny enough a couple months back my misses were all to the left, hence using a body rotation swing was helping me loads to hit straighter shots. currently I wouldn't say I'm 100% using this drill, but I wouldn't say I'm 100% using body rotations to swing, and more like a mix of both which gives me the best results

It’s for every club and you should take it to the course too. You will of course want to extend your swing PAST the “L to L” on both sides of the ball, but it’s a wonderful drill for engaging both Linear and Angular Speed! Coach A. ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻
That would be with the full swing as the hands drop at the start of the forward swing. I use a G-Force club in the house and it allows you to get that feeling while swinging the club slower. It also help show if you are rushing the transition from back-swing to forward-swing. I've been doing the drill in the video since before I saw this video, it is a great drill.
Would you advise a different method for approach irons? Xander Shuffles is one who keeps the face 'open' without any rotation on his approach shots. Would be keen to see a video on that if you haven't done one yet. Thanks for the content.

As a new golfer(ive been playing since December 2022) I think it would be super helpful! When I first started out, I wasnt hitting the ball bad, and my miss was normally a slice. But recently Ive gotten too much in my head with swing thoughts and youtube coaching and ive lost my natural ball striking ability along the way, and now I dont have a consistent miss it goes all over the place. Hoping to get back to natural ball striking and play some fun golf! My last round I shot a 104 and im hoping to break 100 this summer! Thanks for the advice looking forward to more videos.

Kissing the forearms is an excellent way to achieve forearm rotation in a golf swing. Starting slowly is an excellent strategy for accomplishing this! You want to re-hinge post impact - This encourage angular momentum and ensures that you’re giving your speed a home! Best, Coach A. ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻
Hi Steve, thanks for watching, and great question! The vast majority of golfers out there demonstrate excessive tension in the wrists, elbows and shoulders. Once these joints are unlocked, they need to be re-educated. That’s why I spend so much time with the student, placing my hands on the golf club and putting the club in the correct positions. As far as consciously putting pressure on the handle or using centrifugal force is concerned. It really depends on the level of golfer and how well educated their hands and are. In my experience conscious awareness diminishes over time as the new pattern is ingrained! But conscious feel is critical if your have any intention of creating a new swing pattern!! Stevie, like all things it can be overdone! It really depends on your current release pattern? If you’re a hooker then you’ll want to work on body dynamics. For the majority of golfers out there in my experience educating the hands is a critical component, as is swinging the arms freely! These drills help that! Every great ball striker learned how to hook the ball first! And, then they used their body to stabilize the face. So it depends where you fit on that spectrum? I hope that helps! I tried this today and although I got nice contact, the ball went very high and was a "puff ball"...no compression. any suggestions?? I play or practice almost daily...been playing for 20+ yrs.
Keep both hands ‘to the side’ of the golf club at all times!! At no point should your right be on top and your left underneath- unless you’re trying to curve the ball significantly from right to left!! These drill are fantastic for getting your arms swinging freely and your wrists articulating correctly! Interesting as this is the opposite of what I’m working on atm. I typically preset with my hinge, then turn the club over too much through impact. I’m trying to keep the club head away and wide (Rory style), and swing more with my body now.
Thanks for watching Ollie. These drill’s are not for you! You’re likely getting stuck underneath and dumping the club which leads to left misses. Very common with better players and elite juniors. We worked hard on anchoring his trail foot which helped him keep his lower body more underneath him and his hips more in their depth. This in turn increased his body rotation significantly! This looks like "flipping" the club and I have been able to generate more speed and distance when doing it. The problem is the timing of the flip has to be very precise to produce a straight shot.
No - It's only a flip if you try to decelerate your rotation and arms into the ball. Typically that occurs when people get "stuck" so they slow down their rotation and flip at the ball. If you are in a good position and are actively accelerating through the ball, there is no flip - just way more speed. There isn't a person out there strong enough to overcome the physical forces exerted on the club head, if executed properly.
This is the classic hand release swing or the L to L swing as some call it. My issue with it is as much as you generate great club head speed and it looks elegant, trying to control the swing path to face relationship becomes difficult and inconsistent. The more modern type of swing is the body release swing which doesnt generate as much club head speed but offers more consistency with the club face. But that type of swing involves being far more passive with the hands and arms and more active with the lower body which many people find difficult to do. Thetes a lot of debate over these 2 types of swings, with some golfers adapting to a hybrid of the 2 swings.

We’re all so different so teaching everyone the same way is problematic. The drills gave Charlie some great new feels which was my objective! In my experience there is no ‘one way’ to swing a golf club. But seeing as 80% of golfers slice and struggle with club head speed this drill is a good start! Most amateurs would do well to ‘feel’ like the arms recruit the body in my opinion. It helps keep the body closed long enough for the arms to sequence better! Thanks for visiting my YT channel. As long as your body is rotating as you hinge! Hinge with no turn and you’re too steep. Turn with no hinge and you’re too flat. It’s a marriage between radial deviation (hinge towards you) and body turn, hope that helps! ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻
I wonder how this will affect shot dispersion? Of course, it will always be nice to have more clubhead speed (distance) - but if the price you have to pay is accuracy - maybe the trade off isnt worth it.
Hi Salvatore, there are a lot of misconceptions with regard to this release pattern. It is not excessively inside out and “open to closed!” Which was taught a lot back in the 80’s/90’s. This of course requires excessive (ROC) Rate of Closure which is extremely hard to time!! Your hands should remain to the side of the golf club throughout the swing - And the club face remains in front of your body and square to it’s path. You’re just allowing the speed to go somewhere “freely” rather than dragging the handle! The trick is to allow your joints to relax while maintaining good grip integrity!! @@AndrewEmeryGolf when i do it wrong my right hand tends to kind of go under the handle and open up the clubface or sometimes roll over like you said and pull..this is like the old school type release like fred couples and the guys from the past. i used to do it myself but tried to develop the body pivot type release over the last several years but not consistent with that. i'm 73 yrs old and been a 13 hdcp. for 30 years and always trying to improve, thnx for the help.
Same feeling of freedom through the ball Eric. Most golfer spin way to early with their body - especially with the driver! Keep your body closed for as long as possible and allow your arms to swing freely!
Yea I got so caught up in the modern swing which is my body rotation and less hands and arms and I just can’t do that swing at all even though it’s supposed to be more consistent. I’m a feel players though and I have much more consistency and distance control with this type is swing in the video which is more of a traditional swing. I thought for awhile that the modern swing was the only right way because they basically tell you not to do a lot of things that you would do in a traditional swing.
If you’re a ‘shut face’ golfer then you HAVE to use your body more to stabilize the face through impact! Most golfer have neither the strength or mobility to move their body hard left without getting worse! Golfers are drinking the ‘big muscle’ Kool Aid and it’s poison for them! Neutral grips require more forearm rotation. That’s a fact! There’s no ‘one size fits ALL’ but the vast majority of golfers would do well to educate are their hands and arms FIRST! Kolten - Find the release pattern that works for you - there are many ways to swing a club for sure - one size will never fit ALL. I believe this is the single best drill I’ve seen in a long time. I’ve had trouble breaking 100 lately and I decided to try playing exclusively with the hitchhiker drill. First round I shot a 97. One week later second row 94. Gained consistency stayed on the fairways and lost very little distance. Thank you, Andrew.

im in thailand atm helping to rehabilitate after a heart attack in December, ima club golfer hcap14, whose golf was suspended of course due to the attack, anyhoo i came across your vid here and went to the local range and did the drill(s) even though i hadnt played a shot for three months i had an amazing session, striking some what were obviously terrific shots with penetration and flight, i must admit i had to discipline myself to convince that i was not 'flipping' as some mistaken respondees say is happening, as long as one fully extends whilst enabling those wrists produces wonderful shots and straight to, i went and played 9 holes the other day and shot 43 doing your wrist release ! this included two sloppy 7's which were short game mistakes, bad chips putts etc, extend normally you don't 'flip' in a sense you have to have faith, the face squares itself 'naturally' my fellow players were very complimentary about the effortless look of my swing and the distances i was getting , and i was/am a bit shocked at the results, cant wait to get back to my club in the UK for the new season now !! cheers ps the body etc release simply is too hard for the mass of average players, and its nothing short of madness in many cases older less physically able trying to play like Rory etc

I just came back from the range and I have never hit it better!!!!!!!!!!! OMG I am a very big fan at this point. I am AMAZED at how good I was hitting the ball. It was literally amazing.
Releasing club head speed through lead wrist extension is a beautiful thing especially if it’s your first time!
Remember despite some of the comments on this video you’re NOT flipping, you’re simply giving your speed a place to go is all!
You learned to articulate your wrists correctly which transferred speed to the club head with very little torque to your body and no effort whatsoever!

Keep your back facing the target as you transition. Vast majority of golfers jump out early with their body. The best players in the world allow their arms to ‘drop’ twice as far and twice as fast in the transition compared with amateur golfers. These drills help that feel for sure.

Andrew just on this point that you make here is the correct downswing motion a feeling of dropping the arms before any body rotation & letting the hands unhinging into impact.
As opposed to dragging the arms by your turning torso which I can't do anyway.
I love this angular speed idea but am I relying on the arms down to move my mass to my front side or is there a deliberate move to the front leg before the arms drop down & unhinge. ie.am I correct in thinking that the body will turn correctly by the arms falling & hands unhinging then rehinging.?

I love to see this kind of teaching. One of the most common flaws I see in beginning older students with limited athletic ability. Stiff-wristed trying to shovel and “lift” the ball down the fairway, standing up out of their posture, etc. etc. etc.
Really nice to see an old school teacher just get in there, hands on and so simply explain the elusive motion part of the golf swing as opposed to static “position” teaching and a zillion data driven metric points that seems to be the trend today. Well done sir!
Very well explained coach. I tried this out at the range today and my shots were consistently a club length further with the angular speed that was being developed. I did this drill and practiced it from my wedges through to 2-iron, which by the way went 237yds whereas previous it was 220-223 and I wasn’t even giving it full effort.

I always hear golfers saying "need new clubs I'll buy some with stronger lofts " theyll help me hit the ball farther! I've been doing this feet together drill this past winter in the house. Not only it is great for the wrist hinging, it is helping my balance and feel for turning. Been using a G-Force swing trainer club since I'm not swinging 100% speed. The intent is it repeat the process to ingrain the feel. Recent range time is showing great progress.

Great drill for getting back to the basics ... no paralysis by analysis here ... I have finally realized with my body type I had better use arm, hands, and wrist action and this falls in place. Thanks! Start at the finish position looking at your target and hold for a couple of seconds. Feel in balance! Then reverse swing to the top of your backswing before returning to the same balanced finish!! Remember STICK your finish again for two seconds before repeating several times. Work on your cadence and then simply allow the ball to get in the way when you’re ready to hit it! Simply swing THROUGH to the same balanced finish position!

So I've been practicing this at home for a few days and then I went to the range and I've never hit the ball so crisp, but like you mention in your newer video I'm now hitting big hooks with my long irons. Which is fine, body rotation is the next thing to work on, in conjunction with finding what release works for me. It’s not all hands/arms any more than all body but for the vast majority of golfers - a tension free golf “swing” allowing the ball to be captured, will always do better than a violent disruption with the body by someone hitting AT the ball.
These drills all encapsulate that idea! I think it’s been helpful!
FYI - Be careful that you don’t get stuck on your back foot as you graduate into the longer clubs. The arms still need the “support” of the body!

So I've been putting a lot of work prior to this in rotating the hips and trying to get my weight over to the lead leg earlier to start the rotation, but I absolutely felt like I was getting stuck on the back foot and spinning the club up, rather than down.
You make the point in another one of your videos about loading the trail leg to then push off into the lead and I've been trying to implement that. It really feels like that loading of the trail leg allows me to push my weight through to the lead side, and then rotate the club down down as I'm pushing up. Allowing me to get through the ball and out into my finish position.
It became really apparent to me at the range how useful this was, as the shots where I mistimed or I didn't get the push right, I was blocking the shot. But when the rotate happened earlier the club face is in a more closed position at impact creating the sidespin to bring the ball back to target. It also feels effortless.
It then gave me the sensation that the amount of energy I put into the push of the trail and then pop from the lead would increase the force of the club and thus distance, so I could control that a bit more. Alternating between pushing harder and increasing dispersion or calming it down and regaining accuracy. It was a fun session.

This is why great swings look effortless. The speed comes from the hinging, unhinging and the follow thru hinging.
I was a linear swinging golfer for so long, it looked like I was swinging fast, but wasn't producing speed.
I always practice on the range for at least a half hour to an hour to work in that hinge sequence.

Hi Andrew ! Love your videos. I have a difficult question Love to know your views descriptively. In my practice swing i have more hips close, chest close, more shallow(inside) right path like severe draw but in actual swing with ball , mind compensates with
hips, shoulders open, left path for hitting straight shot till impact
and then in follow through also the swing path goes to the right till one moment before finish.
and then it goes to normal at last and manages to get a straight shot.
Because if it replicates practice swings then I can miss the ball.
In other words at practice the swing club is more behind at the delivery position and in actual swing the club is more outside at the delivery position.
I think if I fix this open move in Actual swing by making a close move
with my body then I am doing the wrong fix. Because it is fake open.
So If I Fix like a severe draw move (which happens in practice swing)
By making my Hips more open in downswing then it is the right fix. But not sure.
Do you see such pattern?

That’s a lot to unpack! Firstly get off the range and play as much as you can. It doesn’t matter what you do in practice if you can’t transfer it to the golf course. Pay attention to your ball flight on the golf course. Is it missing right or left, is it slicing or pushing. Is it hooking or pulling?

This is the way i was taught in the early 90s. But modern coaches seem to teach the method the lad had before which completely knackered me.
The body is powerful but the hands are fast Paul! One requires more strength, effort, and mobility the other does not!
The key is finding what works best for you! It’s a symphony of reactions throughout the body that creates optimal speed at impact. Lower body, upper body, arms, hands and of course club all have a role to play.
Body dynamics are very important but your hands are your only contact to the club so give them life!!!

Thanks for watching! The speed has to go somewhere…..his swing center is still rotating and his hands remain to the side of the golf club! As with all drills the key is to exaggerate the feel, for the vast majority of golfers hitting a hook is rare. It’s a huge step forward in fact to improving and gives you permission to work on body dynamics!
These drills helps golfers unlock the joints in the wrists, elbows and shoulders which is a huge problem in golf today. Swing your arms freely, articulate the wrists and then improve your body dynamics. Each segment has a role to play!

I tried this setting the wrists early in the back swing. Seemed to work really well with my 54 degree sand wedge for 50 yard shots. But when I tried it on 75 yard shots I came up way short. Only could hit them about 60 yards. I normally carry the ball 70 - 80 yards with that club.
Dave - thanks for reaching out! I have my students control distance with the length of their swings. In particular the through swing.
1/2 swing - waist high
3/4 swing -shoulder high
Full swing - full finish!
You should see 7-10 yards of additional distance for each shot, and of course a higher trajectory as you graduate to the full follow through.
It’s odd to me that you weren’t hitting it further as you lengthened your swing. Momentum alone should increase speed - unless you were scooping (adding loft) rather than rotating the club face through impact!
Try monitoring the length of your finish again. And see if you start to see some gapping with your yardages!

Andrew, is there a difference between releasing the wrists and “rolling” the wrists. I know rolling the wrists can be seen as more of a short-term fix to square the face and is frowned upon.
I’m not a huge fan of “rolling” the wrists simply because it requires a high (ROC) Rate of Closure. I’m big on fundamentals and believe that the hands should remain to the side of the golf club for the vast majority of golfers out there throughout the release. Neither under or over the handle!! Exceptions are of course golfers with very strong grips who require less forearm rotation!

Awesome. If you've ever seen that "Hanger" swing aid, that helped me a ton with wrist set as well as top of backswing position immediately. I literally have a big red welt on my left wrist, it works though.

I definitely prefer this swing over a modern (body rotation) swing because I’m a feel player. But I’m my opinion, you have to be careful because you are more prone to flipping with this swing. You just have to make sure you’re not unhinging too early. Where the modern swing, you’re essentially controlling the swing with your body and you rotate your club down and around with very little re-hinge or folding over of the arms on the follow though. Problem for me is while I noticed I can get a lower ball flight and a tad more distance with the body swing, I actually have worse control in terms of distance and line. @@kdub3288 In my case I try to incorporate both. I'm currently rotating my body quite a lot but most of my misses are pushes to the right. Currently as it stands this drill helps me either hit really straight shots or slight draws! it also helps me give the correct dynamic loft which in turn increases the spin, height and distance of my shots
@@HorusE your misses right are likely due to your hands falling behind the body too much and you don’t let them catch up to square the face. That’s what one of my issues was too when I tried the body rotation swing. You can compensate for it by starting with a stronger grip or slightly closed face at address. The more shaft lean you have too, the more open the face will be at impact if you start with a square face at setup. But yea this swing technique will also help eliminate the pushes. You have to be careful about what aspect your intermixing because not all aspects from each swing will work together. For example, a stronger grip will square the face with a body rotation follow through but it will cause you to likely pull or hook if you use the arm rotation and rehinge follow through. They’re different swing techniques that require a different setup and follow through.
@@kdub3288 That's probably spot on to the issues I have with my swing. Funny enough a couple months back my misses were all to the left, hence using a body rotation swing was helping me loads to hit straighter shots. currently I wouldn't say I'm 100% using this drill, but I wouldn't say I'm 100% using body rotations to swing, and more like a mix of both which gives me the best results

It’s for every club and you should take it to the course too. You will of course want to extend your swing PAST the “L to L” on both sides of the ball, but it’s a wonderful drill for engaging both Linear and Angular Speed! Coach A. ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻

Great video. Very easy to understand. My question is: Where does lag come into the swing?
That would be with the full swing as the hands drop at the start of the forward swing. I use a G-Force club in the house and it allows you to get that feeling while swinging the club slower. It also help show if you are rushing the transition from back-swing to forward-swing. I've been doing the drill in the video since before I saw this video, it is a great drill.
Would you advise a different method for approach irons? Xander Shuffles is one who keeps the face 'open' without any rotation on his approach shots. Would be keen to see a video on that if you haven't done one yet. Thanks for the content.

As a new golfer(ive been playing since December 2022) I think it would be super helpful! When I first started out, I wasnt hitting the ball bad, and my miss was normally a slice. But recently Ive gotten too much in my head with swing thoughts and youtube coaching and ive lost my natural ball striking ability along the way, and now I dont have a consistent miss it goes all over the place. Hoping to get back to natural ball striking and play some fun golf! My last round I shot a 104 and im hoping to break 100 this summer! Thanks for the advice looking forward to more videos.

I struggle with stopping the follow thru. When I slow it down I get my forearms to touch. Should they touch or am I still doing it wrong.
Kissing the forearms is an excellent way to achieve forearm rotation in a golf swing. Starting slowly is an excellent strategy for accomplishing this!

Hi Steve, thanks for watching, and great question! The vast majority of golfers out there demonstrate excessive tension in the wrists, elbows and shoulders. Once these joints are unlocked, they need to be re-educated. That’s why I spend so much time with the student, placing my hands on the golf club and putting the club in the correct positions.
As far as consciously putting pressure on the handle or using centrifugal force is concerned. It really depends on the level of golfer and how well educated their hands and are. In my experience conscious awareness diminishes over time as the new pattern is ingrained! But conscious feel is critical if your have any intention of creating a new swing pattern!!

Stevie, like all things it can be overdone! It really depends on your current release pattern? If you’re a hooker then you’ll want to work on body dynamics.
For the majority of golfers out there in my experience educating the hands is a critical component, as is swinging the arms freely! These drills help that!
Every great ball striker learned how to hook the ball first! And, then they used their body to stabilize the face. So it depends where you fit on that spectrum?

I tried this today and although I got nice contact, the ball went very high and was a "puff ball"...no compression. any suggestions?? I play or practice almost daily...been playing for 20+ yrs.

Is there a trick to avoiding re-hinging the wrists too early and hooking it?
Keep both hands ‘to the side’ of the golf club at all times!! At no point should your right be on top and your left underneath- unless you’re trying to curve the ball significantly from right to left!!
These drill are fantastic for getting your arms swinging freely and your wrists articulating correctly!
Remember there is a marriage between the body, arms and hands but for the vast majority of golfers they would do well to educate their hands and arms first!!

Absolutely- start with a 7 iron first! Do the drills and swing slowly but articulate your wrists like in the video. Then integrate that release pattern into your “full swing!”

Hi Matt- Shorter irons especially miniature swings and pitch shots typically require a more supported release.
There are some nuances for sure. But for the vast majority of golfers this type of release pattern is refreshing to say the least!

Quite a lot of misconceptions surrounding these drills! It’s not a flip despite how this is perceived by those who have been doing it incorrectly!

All you have to do is pull the butt end of the club thru impact. It will unhinge perfectly on its own if you don’t stop it.
I do need to thumb more rides. Great stuff.
Interesting as this is the opposite of what I’m working on atm.
I typically preset with my hinge, then turn the club over too much through impact.
I’m trying to keep the club head away and wide (Rory style), and swing more with my body now.

He’s an elite player that was struggling with poor iron contact and left misses. We worked hard on anchoring his trail foot which helped him keep his lower body more underneath him and his hips more in their depth. This in turn increased his body rotation significantly! He couldn’t hit a pull fade before the lesson and at the end he had eliminated his left miss!
Remember there isn’t ‘one release pattern’ that works for everyone. You have to find what works for you!

This looks like "flipping" the club and I have been able to generate more speed and distance when doing it. The problem is the timing of the flip has to be very precise to produce a straight shot.
No - It's only a flip if you try to decelerate your rotation and arms into the ball. Typically that occurs when people get "stuck" so they slow down their rotation and flip at the ball. If you are in a good position and are actively accelerating through the ball, there is no flip - just way more speed. There isn't a person out there strong enough to overcome the physical forces exerted on the club head, if executed properly.
This is the classic hand release swing or the L to L swing as some call it. My issue with it is as much as you generate great club head speed and it looks elegant, trying to control the swing path to face relationship becomes difficult and inconsistent.
The more modern type of swing is the body release swing which doesnt generate as much club head speed but offers more consistency with the club face. But that type of swing involves being far more passive with the hands and arms and more active with the lower body which many people find difficult to do.
Thetes a lot of debate over these 2 types of swings, with some golfers adapting to a hybrid of the 2 swings.
Thanks Danny! I really appreciate your feedback. Good points for sure. I’m not a method teacher so I don’t prescribe to ‘one way’ of swinging. We’re all so different so teaching everyone the same way is problematic. The drills gave Charlie some great new feels which was my objective!
In my experience there is no ‘one way’ to swing a golf club. But seeing as 80% of golfers slice and struggle with club head speed this drill is a good start! Most amateurs would do well to ‘feel’ like the arms recruit the body in my opinion. It helps keep the body closed long enough for the arms to sequence better!

I wonder how this will affect shot dispersion? Of course, it will always be nice to have more clubhead speed (distance) - but if the price you have to pay is accuracy - maybe the trade off isnt worth it.
Hi Salvatore, there are a lot of misconceptions with regard to this release pattern. It is not excessively inside out and “open to closed!” Which was taught a lot back in the 80’s/90’s. This of course requires excessive (ROC) Rate of Closure which is extremely hard to time!!
Your hands should remain to the side of the golf club throughout the swing - And the club face remains in front of your body and square to it’s path. You’re just allowing the speed to go somewhere “freely” rather than dragging the handle! The trick is to allow your joints to relax while maintaining good grip integrity!!
Give it a try, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how effortlessly you’ll create speed! - Ultimately you need to find what works for YOU!

@@AndrewEmeryGolf when i do it wrong my right hand tends to kind of go under the handle and open up the clubface or sometimes roll over like you said and pull..this is like the old school type release like fred couples and the guys from the past. i used to do it myself but tried to develop the body pivot type release over the last several years but not consistent with that. i'm 73 yrs old and been a 13 hdcp. for 30 years and always trying to improve, thnx for the help.

Same feeling of freedom through the ball Eric. Most golfer spin way to early with their body - especially with the driver! Keep your body closed for as long as possible and allow your arms to swing freely!
Yea I got so caught up in the modern swing which is my body rotation and less hands and arms and I just can’t do that swing at all even though it’s supposed to be more consistent. I’m a feel players though and I have much more consistency and distance control with this type is swing in the video which is more of a traditional swing. I thought for awhile that the modern swing was the only right way because they basically tell you not to do a lot of things that you would do in a traditional swing.
If you’re a ‘shut face’ golfer then you HAVE to use your body more to stabilize the face through impact!
Most golfer have neither the strength or mobility to move their body hard left without getting worse! Golfers are drinking the ‘big muscle’ Kool Aid and it’s poison for them!
Neutral grips require more forearm rotation. That’s a fact! There’s no ‘one size fits ALL’ but the vast majority of golfers would do well to educate are their hands and arms FIRST! That gives you permission you use your body more effectively.
Bottom line - Find a release pattern that works for you :)

Tour Pros have a more supported release pattern with extraordinary body dynamics.
The point of the video was to demonstrate how to swing the arms freely and tension free as well as articulate the wrists! All great players can do this at will!! 80% of golfers can not! If you’re a high speed guy who can hook the ball at will then you have permission to work on a more body centric release pattern in order to stabilize the face!

Kolten - Find the release pattern that works for you - there are many ways to swing a club for sure - one size will never fit ALL.
Statistically 80% of golfers struggle with speed and slice the ball so this video has resonated for a lot of golfers. For most, creating hand and arm speed is HUGE! I’m glad you don’t have that problem.

Does this movement apply to the driver?
For 80% of golfers this will apply to the driver! Learning how to swing your arms and articulate your wrists with the “support” of the body is critical in order to create speed as well as control.
