I can see how having a food stylist can really be a benefit. Not only do they know how to really make food look great, but they also free up the photographer so that they can concentrate on other aspects of the shoot. Thanks for this post Joanie. Awesome!
And here I thought you just went in and took the pictures and done , Thank you for showing us the workload greatly appreciated from someone that is thinking of transitioning for street/landscape photography .
That video was so educational. Thank you for being so candid, Joanie and Suzy. This video really shows the importance of communication with the client, hiring a qualified food stylist and timing everything just right. 🙌 ladies. You rock!
I just got a client who needs photos of his hamburguers and was strugling on how to get them right and tasty. I've learned so much from this video. Tahnk you for the hard work and lessons.
I just learned so much from this one video!! Loads of your previous videos acted as primers for me just to absorb what’s going on here. I feel like an apprentice! Also props to Ryan for the pro video work here
Your laptop setus is IDENTICAL of the one i’ve got for gears. Some time ago I switched to capture one, it was the best decision ever. Anyway I LOVE this channel! I learn a lot of things here
I love my 2015 MacBook Pro...I never want to upgrade :) lol!!! And yep, I use CO sometimes, but my standard workflow is live view with EOS software with auto-import to lightroom.
I have to say that I just love your channel and work. You give amazing tips, you are confident enough to share your knowlege and you just seem like a nice person❤️
Wow! You really captured the mood the owner wanted. The lighting is perfect Joannie. Great job! (As much as the burger looks beautiful, I think styling a food like that is false advertising.)
No, it is not false advertising. As long as the very same ingredients and amounts are used for the photo that customers will receive in the restaurant. All the food stylist does is make those ingredients look nice. What is false is if someone substitutes mashed potatoes for the ice cream hero, as an example. Terry Thomas... the photographer Atlanta, Georgia USA
Wowwwww. damn broo. this is why I want to become a food photographer. The work flow, the behind the scenes, everything. Nice video, I really loved it! 😃
The strip with the grid limits the spread of light so that it mainly hits the front of the burger and doesn't spill out around the rest of the scene, giving that moodier look, but it's diffused and still gives a nice softness that wraps around the burger. The reflector on the left with the small grid gives the harder edge light (the brighter highlights on the left side of the burger), so the combination of the two makes for a more dynamic feel.
@@TheBiteShot Thank you so much! That was so helpful. Having not used anything other than a single strobe with soft box for about 8 years, I forget all the benefits of these light modifiers. I need to take your class.
That was sick! I love the final shot. I figured you would have used like AD 200s and I was shocked to see you used 2 AD 600s. I learned so much from this video!
By the way, it's amazing to see what flash together with the right modifiers can do for the image! You are shooting in a bright room and get an image like this! I was recently trying to shoot a dark and moody photo using continuous light together with my large softbox, and even though I was using a honeycomb grid, I still had to darken the room and put black cards everywhere around the scene - I used like 4 stands + a tripod and still felt like I needed 4 hands to hold the remaining black cards... :-)
I use this softbox with a speedlight sometimes. You just need an adapter mount. I have it listed on my artificial light gear guide page: joaniesimon.com/artificial-light-gear-guide/
fun video. It would've been great to have examples of what each light was actually doing when the strobes hit the burger. This would've helped us understand the exact positioning of each light and why the modifiers were chosen for this job and how they all complimented each other (the lights) on their own light ratios and intensity.
This was awesome. The final shot looked like it would have been more usable if it was shot a bit wider, just for use in different formats, but I'm sure she didn't take just one shot!
I can see how having a food stylist can really be a benefit. Not only do they know how to really make food look great, but they also free up the photographer so that they can concentrate on other aspects of the shoot. Thanks for this post Joanie. Awesome!
100% totally makes life a lot easier and elevates the images in so many key ways
such a good point!
And here I thought you just went in and took the pictures and done , Thank you for showing us the workload greatly appreciated from someone that is thinking of transitioning for street/landscape photography .
Great video of all the steps that go into such a photograph. People have no idea just how much work goes into it.

I just got a client who needs photos of his hamburguers and was strugling on how to get them right and tasty. I've learned so much from this video. Tahnk you for the hard work and lessons.
This was a great video. I don't do food photography, but it's always super interesting to learn about. And man that pastrami looks good.
I love a good pastrami!
Thank You for taking the time to show us behind the scenes of a food photo shoot. Nice!

That burger was perfect. The pastrami was well placed. You should share how much his sales increased after that shot.
Awesome BTS Joanie. Great lighting and incredible food styling!! Now all I want to do is find a good stylist and shoot burgers all day 😀

The Bite Shot well, it looked very cinematic and the separation of background was awesome!
Fun and interesting! Really enjoyed watching how you worked together to produce a masterful shot.
this is awesome! I should do more BTS restaurant shoots - they're so fun!
So cool. We needed this kind of facelift for our burger episode a few weeks ago.
Burgers are so tricky! So glad I had Suzy there to make the magic happen.
Thanks so much for this behind the scenes I can't wait to see more. ❤
Wow, wow, wow!!! Me encantaaaaaa!!! GRACIAS!
I always wondered why the food never looked as good as on the menu when I get my order smh
Yup same feeling when dating someone from tiktok
Never knew all that went into a food shot. Thanks for the education !
Maravilloso video, me encantó muchísimo.
good photography and styling -- keep smiling
This was hella fun
yay!!
Didn't Burger King just get slammed with a lawsuit because their actual burgers don't look like the burgers in the adverts? Now we know why!
I love how she didn’t respond to this lol
AAAAAAAH THAT WAS AWESOME!!! 😱😱😍😍
Isaac Coles glad you enjoyed it!! We had fun!!
I have to say that I just love your channel and work. You give amazing tips, you are confident enough to share your knowlege and you just seem like a nice person❤️
Joanie thanks so much for thi "behind the scenes"... so instructable!... 😁
That was so fun to watch! Beautiful!

So good. Loved watching!!
Great work, it is truly telling to see the hard work which goes into creating one picture.
Watching this early morning on an empty stomach is a real torture 😂
Lovely thank you. Looking forward to trying this
OMG super clear the explication…. Just what i’ve been looking for 💕
So glad!
Wow so fun!!! Learned so much! Do more like these 😍😍
Awesome video! Incredible photo. Can you expand on why the strip with the grid one side?
The strip with the grid limits the spread of light so that it mainly hits the front of the burger and doesn't spill out around the rest of the scene, giving that moodier look, but it's diffused and still gives a nice softness that wraps around the burger. Nice video..thanks
Top quality video. Learned a whole bunch... BTW, you forgot to mention your incredible videographer. Great job all!
That was sick! I love the final shot. I figured you would have used like AD 200s and I was shocked to see you used 2 AD 600s. I learned so much from this video!
Great , thank you for your time to shared this ❤
This was so fun. Love the lighting set up. I have two speedlights. Now I want ... this!
Awesome video as always. I really appreciate what you do and the knowledge you share. Awesome burger

Thank you so much Joanie, very informative!
Amazing video!! Loved the BTS style, and the burger looks soooo goood!!
Wow I can’t tell if this is just behind the scene or a whole show. So GOOD!!! Thank you for making this :D
Great Content thanks a lot ...I´ve got a food shooting next Wednesday cause obviously all restaurants are closed so it's time to remake some menus ;)
Great video! I want that strip softbox but there are not many that go with speedlights... :-(
By the way, it's amazing to see what flash together with the right modifiers can do for the image! You are shooting in a bright room and get an image like this! Yep, the power of flash
Thanks for sharing!

You learn by trial and error, otherwise all you're doing is copying a recipe (which anybody can do).
first comment. also these videos are helping me so much in my photography classes. thank you heaps
all amazing... just was wondering, didn't the room lights interfere with your shot?
nice, I wonder what was the ISO, F, SS of that photo
greetings!
Amazing video!! Thanks a ton for doing this. I remember requesting for a burger shot and bts few weeks ago. Absolutely happy to see this!
Ask and you will receive! :) ha!
@@TheBiteShot haha! next on the list.. hmm how about pizza :P
This is great , thx for sharing your process.
Very helpful, thank you Joanie, I want to ask if the burger that go to the table looks pretty similar?
It's the same amount as far as ingredients, but definitely this is much more polished :)
Awesome job! I'm in love with your vids & the way you make photos!
I recognize the cheese board you are setting the burger on, but what back background are you using?
It's one I made myself out of plywood, plaster and paint :)
Wow, cool. I've been to that deli before I moved from Phoenix
This was a fascinating video. So glad I found you.
This was awesome. The final shot looked like it would have been more usable if it was shot a bit wider, just for use in different formats, but I'm sure she didn't take just one shot!
