Well-delivered exposition with Picard and Worf. There is a lot of story for the audience to understand if the plot is going to make sense and have an impact: backstory, multiple previous episodes, Klingon politics, in addition to the offscreen drama that led up this moment. The scene is well-written and well-acted, with just two actors bouncing off of each other dynamically. This could have been clunky or boring in less-capable hands.

In fairness, it was the Federation that picked the fight with the Dominion by continuing to enter the Gamma quadrant to do scientific missions and setup colonies even after being told to stop invading their turf they had claim to for centuries. Klingons had no such motivation to do the same. And yet, the Federation filled with its pacifists did nothing to prevent the spread of Dominion aggression in return and they weren't choosey who their targets were - anyone from the other side of the wormhole was fair game. You can't expect a Klingon to back down from that kind of thing. In essence, the Federation created its own dish to have an interstellar war.

Then they put an impostor Martok in position to goad the Klingons into being hyper aggressive. They played the Klingons perfectly. • @shadowfox781
      @shadowfox781 3 роки тому +12

You're right. Most of the audience assumed it was Duras. However, I always thought it was Gowron who killed K'mpec for the following reasons:
      1. Worf said that Gowron was an outsider who challenged the high council many times. He clearly did not like K'mpec and had a motive for killing him. Duras, on the other hand, was probably reluctant to kill the man who covered up his father's crime.
      2. The way Gowron smirks when he hits K'mpec with the pain stick during the Sonchi ceremony. He was clearly pleased that K'mpec was dead. Duras didn't react at all.
      3. Gowron almost admits that he killed K'mpec when he tries to bribe K'Ehleyr into making Picard speed up the Klingon rituals and she refuses.
Gowron: "K'mpec was also stubborn. He too refused to listen. NOW . . . he is gone. You need not make the same mistake."
K'Ehleyr: "K'mpec was OLD and WEAK. I am NOT!"
Gowron laughs and walks away, almost like he is saying, "Keep telling yourself that."
I remember watching this when I was a teenager and thinking to myself, "Man . . . they are BOTH without honor. The Klingon empire is in trouble regardless of which one of them wins."

My guess it was Gowron that poisoned K'mpec but it was Duras that planted the bomb. Gowron was an outsider (non-Council member) so his window of opportunity as being a challenger was limited. More so, he likely calculated only he and Duras would be challengers and he would know his prowess with the blade was superior over Duras, so he could win in honorable combat. Else, without killing K'mpec he could've gone on living another 20 years ruling the empire, to which by then Gowron would be irrelevant since he couldn't keep opposing the High Council and get away with it. Duras, meanwhile, only had to bide his time since he was a full Council member and already had K'mpec wrapped around his finger as a puppet.

I knew that Duras was the one who poisoned K'mpec. Gowron would not have used poison because he believed in honor, unlike Duras. Duras was a Romulan ally. It would have been interesting if Duras became Chancellor. The Klingon Empire would withdraw from the peace treaty with the Federation and become a Romulan ally again. The Federation would be forced to ally with the Gorn Hegemony. I wished they made the Gorns as a major power. They would be opposing the Romulans. Both races use plasma-based weapons.

I believe it was Gowron that poisoned K'mpec but he did not plant the bomb. Duras was a full Council member while Gowron was not - he was a political outsider. i.e. he was a vocal critic and while he likely had royal bloodlines, his window of opportunity of remaining relevant to the people had a limited lifespan. Meaning, the people would eventually tire of him he if he did not rise in political prominence. K'mpec could've easily have lived another 20 years ruling the Empire. That would be the kiss of death for Gowron to remain relevant and he would never have a shot of being Chancellor. Duras, meanwhile, just had to bide his time and he would get his shot. Not to mention, he already had an active conspiracy with K'mpec so having full control of the Empire was not as hungry to achieve as it did with Gowron.

K'Empec must be the strongest Klingon known in the Empire! He can sleep in a chair and take multiple stabs from a painstick and not even be stirred. I don't know why the elaborate ceremony thinking he's dead.....I can see him breathing 🤣🤣

While Worf’s essentialist claim is faulty - I do think he’s right that a Klingon didn’t kill K’mpec. Duras would have killed Gowron to secure the succession, not K’mpec to force the conflict when the succession wasn’t secured yet. Whoever killed K’mpec didn’t want Duras to lock down succession - they wanted a civil war where Duras would need them.
    It was the Tal’Shiar.

I don't like how Picard skirts over the legal issue he's facing here. It's uncharacteristic of him to choose one element only to impose his own beliefs on the situation by overriding the Klingon perspective on the son sharing the father's crime. That piece of un-Picard like behavior allowed them to skirt over the serious legal dilemma Picard would face otherwise- Duras actually does NOT have a legal claim. It's only because the High Council chose to blatantly ignore Klingon law that he has any consideration here and Picard knows that for a fact. The question would then be is Picard obligated, or forbidden from taking that into account.

      From Memory Alpha:
"At the Sonchi ceremony aboard K'mpec's ship, Gowron and Duras arrive with their aides. Picard, followed by each of the challengers, stands before K'mpec's body, says "Qab jIH ngil," ("Face me if you dare") and jabs the corpse with a painstik. While Picard does so with veiled detestation and Gowron goes through the motions of due process, Duras seems to relish his turn. Finally, K'Ehleyr steps in front of the corpse and says, "Sonchi" ("He is dead")."

When you think about it, why the hell did Duras show up with one of his men rigged with a bomb anyway- a bomb with a Romulan-made detonator at that? Was he hoping to kill Gowron? Given he was planning on simply getting himself declared chancellor, it doesn't seem to make any sense.

    • @KuDastardly

I never cared for Gowron, both the character and the actor playing him. It was hard to see him as a leader. Casting and writing makes a big difference. Watch Star Trek 6. Gorkon is killed off early. But because of how he was written and who they cast, it was easy to accept him as a leader. Same with Kempec. Star Trek 6 was released after this episode, which made it hard to watch episodes with Gowron afterwards. To go from Gorkon and Kempec to Gowron who just doesn’t have the gravitas of the other characters and actors. It’s like going from Morgan Freeman as President to Jamie Fox.
