Nice video! This was F-105D # 61-0059 that crashed here on December 7, 1967. While performing high speed maneuvers this aircraft inadvertently entered a flat spin which was unrecoverable. Fortunately the pilot did get out in time.
The F-105 was one of the easier airplanes to recover from a spin, but you needed enough altitude to recover. Below that you just punch out.
The F105's were designed and intended to be a high speed nuclear bomber, fast, fuel guzzling beasts had minutes after take off to find the tanker. We used what we had in Vietnam and the Thud was not ill suited for aerial combat however they found their niche as wild weasel Radar interceptor, they would seek the radar signature of and launch HARM missiles against VC SA2 missile sites attempting to lock onto our aircraft..
Great video ! You sure do put on some miles (rough ones at that) in bringing these downed aircraft to us ! Thanks again
F105 one of my favorite planes I seen many coming going from Dobbins AFB those planes made a awesome Thud sound when the AB kicks in it was like no other.
Excellent use of different camera angles. Great perspective and very well executed. Thanks for sharing!
Love your Blazer. Great crash site find. Always loved the F-105
I was there on 250 KTM in 2007 About a year after the fires that burned through there.I got a sweet piece of the plane palm size high end aluminum and some bullets.Insane single track for the moto's. Great location. Good to see this again, thank you for the video..
I enjoyed the scenery just as much as I enjoyed the crash site. Thx for going up there for us!
It's so "respectful" to carve one's initials into places they visit.
I just found your channel through this video. I quite enjoyed it. The F 105 is my favorite of the Century series aircraft. I was also glad to see that you brought appropriate weapons, to many people hike without any serious form of defense. I look forward to perusing you library of content.
I love your videos!!!!! Kinda wish there were more, but I've watched your videos repeatedly, because they are so interesting. You do a great job!!!!
You put some effort into filming the truck going up the mountain. You used a good length boom, and you have quite a few shots of the truck passing by. You definitely have interest in film making. Nicely done!
Cool video! Thanks for sharing, that ol k5 blazer is bad ass!!!
They were nicknamed "Thuds". Some say the were named "Thuds" because that's the way they sounded when they hit the ground.
Your K5 is really nice!
some of it looks brand new because of the quality
The F105 was called the "Thud" because of the sound the aircraft made when the afterburner lit off during take-off.
And also the sound it made when it hit the ground.
The item he referred to as an airbrake was the afterburner nozzles or eyelets. And they are titanium.
They have the 20mm Gatling gun on display at the Kernville airport. How they got that out of there I’ll never know.
Fernando,I really enjoy your videos.I hope at some point in my life I can afford a 4 wheel drive vehicle and can go exploring like you!!
Super cool adventure
i know of another crash site off highway 14 on the scodie mountains
fernando hasent made a video for a long time
Just viewed the video. A big thumbs up. Great job.
Excellent work. You should have been an archaeologist! Well, perhaps you are of sorts. Thanks.
I seen another plane like this closer to hwy 178 it looks like the same type of plane
crash site start at 7:30
Very nicely done. Enjoyed your effort both behind of and in front of the camera.
The F-105 had four pedal air brakes around the afterburner nozzle (aka Turkey feathers). Check out an F-105 walk around to see an intact example.
This one is a good find for sure... Do you GPS your finds of airplane wrecks to create a data base map? I like those old radial engines what a fine engine... There is a B-17 wreck not far from where i live and i have visited the site many times , the plane came down in 1952...
Glad you had enough gas to get there and back 🙌
The Rupublic F-105 Thundercheif is great fighter-bomber its considered to be the F-35 of its time it was sadly it was retired in 1984
It was terrible as a fighter. It was too large, heavy, slow maneuvering, had no guns, and was no match for the Vietnamese in their MiG 21s or Mig 17s. It was used mostly as a fighter/bomber with F-4 cover.
@@mlsmithmlsmith It had a 20mm Vulcan cannon and carried heat seeking sidewinder missiles. Yea it wasn't a dog fighter but had 27.5 Mig kills during its service in SEA.
With the bomb load dropped it could out run a Mig 17 in low level flight without breaking a sweat. She was fucking fast in level flight and was a durable A/C. My father was a crew chief in 67-68 on the D model and a line chief on the G model in 72-73 during LB II.
I wish you would have shared more info on how to get to the site though. You never mention any of the roads or trails. I have to believe you did this intentionally. Perhaps you feel that the site needs to be preserved, and the less visitors the better. That's fine. I still enjoyed what you did share. Thank you.
5:00 Hiking alone can be fairly safe, so long as you let people know where you are going and when you expect to be back, along with your planned route.
Just don't forget to let them know you are safe when you return.
3:45 Just keep your speed down to minimize the dust. They will have nothing to complain about.
Flying thru the jungle in Republic's Ultra Hog!
Did that pilot pass away in the incident
The pilot ejected safely.
Great video!
I didn't know the NVA had sams in California.
Plane failure is probably why that one is there
I see you always carry a knife, what is your choice to carry? I also always carry a knife with me when i go out into the forest ..
Love your videos keep up the good work and find some more love the history
first...cool video brother. thank you.
2nd...'chatter' ... 'misinformation' something tells me you've been in the military. which is cool.
Does anyone know Fernando or know why he quit posting videos?
He was deported
How many people died in that crash??
None, the pilot bailed out.
Here's a link with more info on the crash: joeidoni.smugmug.com/Aircraft-Crash-Sites/Piute-Mountains-F-105D/
I hope he knows that there is a trail that goes right to it
was you wearing a pistol?
Can you hear the guns Fernando?
I dont know, can you Frida?
Thud.
