I was a Asst Crew Chief on the Phantom, during the early 80’s, at old George AFB, 39th TFS, than the 21st AMU, still have the hats, my assigned Aircraft tail # was 66-6333, built when I was 2 years old, someone gave me a picture of it, which I still have. Wow, nice work man, that must be fascinating to find old wrecks in the middle of nowhere, new Sub here, very interesting!!

Interesting video. I did similar crash hunting as a youngster in the Scottish mountains with a list of crash sites from RAF Lossiemouth. Found a Dehaviland Mosquito. The wood was long gone but we did find one of the RR Merlin engines before the weather forced us to return to the Inn for beers in front of a warm fire. More latterly in Papua when we visited a DC3 crash site high up in the jungle, a very tough high altitude jungle trek. This was the epic WWII Shangri La aircraft of great fame. A later visit to the site by a friend discovered a college ring which he traced the owner of and returned to their family in the US some 70 years after the crash.

Me too. I waded out to the flying boat wrecks in broome Australia to see a Dornier and PBY Catalina, both almost complete but obviously very corroded from being in the sea for decades. Also in Dartmoor UK a Lancaster site - loads of molten metal and small parts. Finding a 'Mozzie' must've been very exciting!

I found this video and your comment by accident. I had read lost in Shangrila and a friend from Our local Lions Club had been Commissioned by the Queen of England to spelunk caves in New Guinea. Before watching a show of His Exploits that He accomplished with other spelunkers and a troop of native porters and guides familiar with the native method of scaffolding cliff sides He insisted we all share a drink from a genuine native gourd. As we watched the presentation We all noticed that the Native’s went completely naked except for what We just drank from covering their Coileach. I hopeI got that Scots Gaelic translation right. Thought You might get a laugh out of it. I grew up at the base of Whites Hill in Fairfax Ca. The site of a B-17 crash on its approach to Hamilton Field. My Grandfather and One of My Uncles guided the Army to the site. See B-17 crash Whites Hill Marin County. A High School Friend Wrote a Story about it . We are in the credits. Distant ancient relatives who had been defeated by the Romans at the Sombre River in Belgium were later used as mercenaries along the Scottish Border and influential in the evolution of the English Language. I like Old Blind Dogs and Allistair Begg too.

My dad took me to an F-104 crash site in the Mojave Desert back in the day. He worked on Edwards Air Force Base. The pilot got out ok and the jet plane was still smoking sticking in the desert sand nose first.

I really enjoyed the documentary! I remember when we used to drive on base (Mayport) to pick up my father at work, and when my mom worked for the USO, there was always this F4 Phanton sitting at the end of the runway that ran parallel to the road getting in. That's back when my Dad served on the Saratoga. I even got to witness the F4 doing touch n go's on the deck of CV60 on a tiger cruise back in the day. It was awesome. I love that I was the 1000th liker of this one! Congrats and keep up the amazing work. As a videographer and Photographer, I really love the angles and it overall was a nice production.

All four crew members managed to eject, but #158379fs radar intercept officer LTJG C. Jack Winstead was killed.

You reminded me of when I was stationed @ Seymour/Jonson AFB NC. I was with the 68BW working on B-52G & KC-135s we were a tenet unit there. The host unit & is still there is the 4FW & @ that time was flying the F-4E. The howl you describe I remember as they flew over getting ready to land. My first Doberman use to howl back @ them as if she was calling a wolf pack. Coming to the end of a long career now, working F-16s. But I still miss Mighty SAC & the professionalism/Pride required in it!

This crash site was at the China Lake NAS Range, Trona, Ca. near Death Valley, Ca. Two F4J Phantoms collided with performing simulated ACM ( Aerial Combat Maneuvers) Three Navy Pilots ejected safely, one was killed. This is technically "Off Limits" and is Restricted area. This guy was lucky he wasn't caught trespassing .

The elements are kind to metals out there .. that’s why they have the plane graveyard located there so that they may be pulled back into service if needed.
The same wreck lying in a jungle in SE Asia wouldn’t look half as pristine

Great Video, Very Informative. I Served on The Carrier Independence in Early 80s
. We had a couple F4s doing Launch n Recovery. They were the loudest Jets we ever had! The F14s were loud but I'm willing to bet the F4s were a bit louder. Thanks, Be Safe out There.

Im here in Arizona, back in like 2010 or so I seen a Phantom that I do believe it was painted with a drone. It had orange & I also believe it had white.
Back in the day I built a RC ( radio control) F4 J ,painted it in Blues Angels paint scheme as #4. This was back in mid 90s

A stabilator (in contrast to a horizontal stabilizer with a hinged tail surface) is absolutely necessary for supersonic aircraft. The supersonic shock wave tends to park on the hinge. This deprives the pilot of all pitch control just when the CG shifts because of that same shock wave. A few WWII fighters crashed because of this phenomena as well as some early jet and rocket powered aircraft until they figured this out.

I once visited a crash site about 3 minutes after the crash happened. It was not something I'd like to see again. No one want to know what an airplane crash does to the human body, especially if those human bodies are small.

I'm amazed they just LEAVE THE TRASH THERE!
But then again, this is the SAME GOVERNMENT that classified Area 51 even HIGHER in the early 1990s when ex-Lockheed contractors SUED because the base managers burned toxic material in open pits and DIDN'T let those contractors wear any biohazard/protective gear!!!!
Some of these planes and drone projects have used toxic materials in their construction. Asbestos was a common material until the 1970s. They had radioactive components in the engines for the D-21 drone I believe that had to be disposed of before those drones were sent for museum exhibition. NASA 2 or 3 of those drones they ultimately didn't use for test flights and they couldn't scrap those engines in the normal way!

Of all US military branches, only the US Navy claims to retain ownership of crash debris after they are done cleaning up all that they're willing to clean up. These are Navy planes, so technically they claim to retain ownership. But on the other hand, the property owner (often Bureau of Land Management, US Forest Service, or other government entities) try forcing the military to come back and clean up some more. I don't think there has ever been a good court test case where someone took stuff long after the cleanup, but I suspect the result might be that the wreckage was abandoned, and subject to the rules/ownership of the land owner rather than the military.
But if you're going to mess with a wreck, Navy is the wrong one to mess with, unless you like paying lawyers. Also, never remove ANYTHING from a national park, national monument, national historic site, etc. And never remove ANYTHING over 100 years old from anywhere, 50 years on certain types of property, at which point antiquities preservation laws kick in. It is debatable whether it is 100 years since manufactured, or 100 years since crashed, but I do interpret it to mean the clock starts ticking when it rolled off the assembly line, not when it crashed (if a plane) or was left there as trash by a hiker.. I wouldn't take even a beer bottle cap if there was a chance it was from 100 years ago. And I'd be super careful to check the rules of where I found something, if 50 years. I think there have been cases with coins, where they went by the year on the coin, rather than the year it was left there.
