My dad had the Montego estate! Burgundy red. I wanted him to get the saloon, but it was still great.

Good video and enjoyable. The early MG Montego did have red seat belts and carpets. I love the Montego having owned a Turbo for 34 years. Practical seats 5, good boot and plenty of get up and go. Previously i owned an Ital.

A wag in the village we used to live in on his Montego Estate put the m upside down and got rid of the e to become the 'Wont go'

They were very reliable tho, just rot boxes. Ours was a 1988 car, scrapped in 1996, it seemed to rot before our very eyes. In 1994 its timing belt went at 6.30 am after i'd dropped off my husband at work. I was very pregnant and overdue and it was befòre mobile phones so i had to walk a mile to a phone to ring the RAC and back again to the car. The Rac msn towed me home on a metal bar and put a new timing belt on outside my house , charging me £12. He told me what great safe engines they were as they just stop running when the belt goes whereas if i had a sierra, my engine would have been mashed.

I had 2x Austin Montego 1.6L's . Both on E plates, the first one (red) was so rotten it needed sills welding in 1993. We scrapped it in 1996 and crazily bought another (white over grey). I actually had some MG bits in my second one as a friend was scrapping his MG so we took seats and wheels. I did once get a lift in an earlier Monty and it was very plasticky compared to the 88 & 89 ones I had. Things I did love were the cables to open the boot and the fuel flap.
Hope to see you Sarah at Boston Classic Car show on 11th August plus we are coming to the Great British Car Journey on August bank holiday Monday for the 65th Mini birthday 🎈

Folks had an ‘87 Monte 2.0L EFi Vanden Plas in two tone silver. Full leather interior and automatic gearbox and that spoiler on the back. It went pretty well. Did us proud until around 2004.

I had a red 1.6L, for the engine size, it went like stink. As for quality, I was happy with it, except for the air vents, they just fell apart. Other than that, I really liked it!

Montego was a good looking car. I still think it was better than cavalier of the same year

My husband had a 1987 E Reg 1.6L Red Monty when i met him. Always a nice car and never let us down except for me when 40 weeks pregnant and the timing belt went... fixed by the RAC outside my home for £12. The only problem was the rust. I used to think that maybe they had a rust preventative treatment that somehow wasn't applied to ours but with hindsight, i wonder if it was previously flood damaged aa the sills and lower doors were needing bodywork as early as 1993 which is crazy. My husband would apply patches for its mot's in 1995 I clipped a tiny post and rail fence to stop people accessing a grassed area to get to their homes... i only touched it lightly but it ripped a massive hole thru the sill and we realised then just how bad it was. We removed a couple inches lot from it as in the interior, lights, clocks, basically everything and we put its original wheels back on as we'd had MG wheels from a friend who upgraded his MG wheels. after taking what we could, it was cubed at the scrappers in 1997. Absolutely shocking it only lasted a decade yet we had always looked after it.
After that we got another E Reg 1.6L , 1988 white over grey Monty but whilst the garage who had it on their forecourt was closed over Spring bank holiday, we went all over it with a magnet and a tiny tapping hammer. It was up for sale at £995 and we didn't want to spend a grand for something identical to the rust bucket. All appeared well and we bought it tonce the garage reopened. I really loved that car but was suffering severe back pain having had an epidural in with my 2nd son, plus with some of the Montego countryman being 7 seaters, to me I didn't feel they were safe plus it meant there was no boot space and so I went for a Peugeot 309GRi which had the 4 doors, room for the pushchair and then when I made my family bigger, i bought a Ford Tourneo Executive which had 9 seats in total and enough boot space to put a triple maclaren buggy in there along with a trolley holding everyones beach shoes, buckets and spades . Sorted x

This felt larger than the Cavalier and Sierra and I've had all of them. I had the Monty MGi, tested a Turbo and refused to buy it. I hated the exterior door handles but I loved it more than the Cav which was my second choice.

Ahh, first crash. Remember spinning into that field like it was yesterday.
