I had a Montego Turbo in the mid 90s, but l played with mine. I upped the boost to 17 psi and changed jetting on the SU. l also cut the mid box out of the exhaust and put heavy duty zip ties around the intercooler to stop it blowing apart. I also fitted Moto Build shocks and 2 inch lowered springs. It was proper quick and would give a Cossie a good run for its money, until the head gasket blew, she was never same after that. Nice to see there are some still running. What an under rated car, Rs Turbo Escort would not come anywhere near the performance of a standard MG Turbo.
I owned a Montego turbo back in the early 90's in red too. Lots of torque steer solved by dropping it 2" and a blown head gasket when I bought it. Thanks for the step back in time! Incidentally I also owned the EFi Montego, an EFi Maestro that was turbo charged with the Tickford kit on and finally #27 F301 KKP BRG Maestro Turbo, again lowered to get rid of torque steer.
Great stuff! Yeah headgaskets didnt/dont last that long, ive never had an EFi, quite fancy one now! But are so thin on the ground. Glad you enjoyed, this was one of my very first vids 🙂
What a mint example! - the paint standard was top notch! I had several Turbo Montego's back in the day, and the last one I had was exactly like that one but had a T16i Turbo engine from the Rover 620Ti installed with "only" 225BHP! That thing was a rocket ship! It did have uprated brakes (Corrado front discs), poly bushes, lowered stiffened springs, shocks etc. so it handled and stopped more appropriately for the power output 🙂 The power and torque had a habit of breaking the gearbox though - I went through three...
I always wanted to do that conversation. Austin Rover used a maestro to road test the previous M16 engine. I don't know that they did a turbo m16 at that time. It must have been a fun car you had.
Worlds Fastest Granny Carrier! I went through several engines, turbo’s & a gearbox. I went to too many football matches & came via the AA but I did drive it like an F1 driver. I adored it, warts & all but eventually I gave up on it & traded it for a Calibra turbo.
I would have taken you on in mine. We stuck a Janspeed exhaust and a huge Garret turbo on ours after we installed the 2.7 Honda lump. We clocked 0-60 in 6.4 seconds and a top speed of 135MPH.
I have happy memories of my white MG Montego Turbo, also the facelift one on a G plate. It had been messed with before I got it and it was a bit of a hooligan which I loved. Loads of drama, wheelspin, torque steer and that Turbo rush at 3k rpm. Very addictive. Rot was impossible to stop though and I used to get new rust bubbles every time it rained. Its crazy to think I had to cut out rusted through rear arches and sills on a 4 year old car and then do a full respray but thats how bad they were for rusting. Great fun though and very cheap back in the day, think i only paid £1200 for mine when it was just over 3 yrs old. Literally no one wanted them. Traded mine for an Alfa Romeo but was glad to see the MG again a few months later when it flew past me on the motorway doing about 120mph. Guess its new owner was loving it too!
Remember driving my Uncle's Turbo back in the late 80's. Ii thought it was the fastest thing on earth, probably not but it did go well, a 4 car overtake will always stay with me.
Great to see a video on one of these. I had 3 Montegos, last of which was a red turbo and the only one I didn't have to pull the dash out to replace the heater matrix. It ended up with different alloys, lowering kit (fab handling but the ride was a tad harsh), boost increased and carb jet changed, bigger bore exhaust (did that myself...with lots of swearing), pipercross (?) air filter, smaller steering wheel, boost gauge, alloy gear knob and a grill from a Rover Montego for the debadged look. Bloody loved that car, so much fun. Annoyed it didn't have the red seat belts my brother's MG Metros had. Sadly met it's end after I got rear ended by a Metro :(
Bought one of these by accident. I was looking for an Escort Turbo when they were selling around £5k for a good example, but couldn't resist the immaculate Montego Turbo I stumbled across during my search for £800. Liked it so much I bought another for my next car.
I bought a 3 year old white Montego Turbo in 1990 (E888 PDW). Absolutely loved it (especially the torque steer on hard acceleration from a standstill) but it sadly died in 1998 from catastrophic engine failure. Up to that point, it had been absolutely faultless apart from the standard MG Montego issues.......front shock failure, crankshaft oil seal failure, turbo failure, rust, sticking mileometer...............
@@RetroRatchet I was the ripe old age of 22 when I boought it in 1990 and as it was rediculously quick for the time, I drove it hard all the time. I guess 8 years of abuse took it's toll on the poor thing and on a drive to work, I stopped in a queue of traffic, suddenly became surrounded by a cloud of smoke and it siezed solid 😩. I sold it to a guy that stripped it for spares as he broke Turbo's & EFi's.
That has to be the best 2.0 Turbo left on the planet. I remember hunting the internet for them in good condition about 15 years ago and couldn’t find one.. I bought a grey Montego 1.6 LX in 2004 just for nostalgia. Didn’t keep it long, it was a dog. 😊
New sub absolutely no idea how I got here but glad I did 😂 my mum had a BRG maestro turbo too low owner low miles was really mint till she sold it to a young lad who put a stupid big stereo in it and it caught fire 🙄 it’s down south somewhere now the lad who runs the Facebook page for them was gonna resto it. Keep up the great work lookin forward to the next vid cheers 🏴
Hi,really liked the content, you're narration was faultless always liked montego wanted a montego estate but never ever found one that was worth the money, wish now I had, I have had a few rovers never ever had any problems except on one the drivers window didn't work found out the glue had gone off, rover dealer wanted funny money, sorted them myself got glue from auto windscreens and cleaned the clips ,regards 🏴
My dad used to have a B reg a 20i efi flame red when you would leave your handbrake on it will warn you if you're driving too fast in foggy conditions it will warn you this car brings back memories And YES it was always stolen every other week. Lol
Is that a proper one as I drove one in about 1989 and it was an MG EFI Turbo and on the seat it was embossed "TURBO". Never knew there was a carb version?
Took a few of them back in the late 80's and my old man had one and I bought one from Shotts auctions purely so I could flip it, one of the rear doors was rotten so I glued it shut, when a guy came to see it he came along with his wife, I parked the car in such a way his wife would get in the rear door that was fine, he bought the car for double what I paid for it but he lived local, after about 5 days him buying it he discovered the rotten door and called my landline non stop for weeks. If you even went anywhere near a QTR of a tank in that same car it wouldn't start. Basically they were junk, even the ones I took purely so i could look around the streets for a much better car. Thankfully I was rehabilitated back into society back in November 1992 with a view you should NEVER mess with another humans car or pastry.
I'm ashmed to say that I am personally responsible for writing off an MG Metro Turbo, E-Reg... I am now DEVASTATED that I no longer have it.. knowing what I know now, it would've been in mint condition 😫

Yeah tuning was great fun in the 90s! My maestro turbo has similar mods plus an upgrade cooler. Went very well!

Happy days mate! Yeah its a shame they just rotted but back then, and were scrapped, but the corrosion was tricky to fix in some cases

Cool! When i was 17 i got a shot of a efi and also thought that was unbeatable lol

Haha yeah the heater matrix, i just done the pipes on the maestro,

Yeah they are great fun to drive, even now, did u find out what happened to the engine?

I miss my montego turbo

Thanks john, yeah they rarely come up in this condition!
I went into a bus stop backwards at 60 in a Montego gti estate . The 90s what a decade
Which came off better? Lol
Bus stop
I remember seeing that car in Practical Classics a couple of years ago. Very nice!
Hello mate, yeah nice car that is, think its still for sale at the same dealer
@@RetroRatchet I see! Will you be at Festival Of The Unexceptional next year? 🙂
I doubt it, little far away unfortunately 🙁
@@RetroRatchet you'd be surprised, people go there from all over Europe! 😃
I had a red MG Maestro, loved the car. If was fun driving back then.
Hi Roger, just finished the first video on the Maestro Turbo, watch this space 🙂

Ah thats a shame mate, hopefully it will get rescued! Mines is brg soon to be black. Watch this space.

Thanks for the kind words mate. Gonna do a similar one on the sd1 to cover the welding in more detail and also the maestro turbo
Brilliant love seeing any MG on you tube I also had a red montego in that colour not the turbo tho. Great video I'm now a sub for MG content. 👍
Cheers Jason. The Maestro Turbo to film still, its full nut and bolt. Nearly ready for paint so its quite far along. Hope u will find it interesting!
Fantastic job lad well done 🥇🇬🇧🙏
Thanks 👍

Proper car that. Well done.
Thanks again mate

All factory turbos (metro maestro montego) where an su carb mate,
I had a go in one, they drove really easy an my dad had a maestro 1st car ,
Yeah steering is super light too
Shame you didn't hold the phone in horizontal mode....
Hi, yeah power of hindsight, i hadnt planned on starting a channel when i shot some of these, hopefully got away with it though 🙂
Montegos were very easy to steal. Another reason they disappeared in the 90s
Yeah not much too them in terms of security, but guess most things were like xr3 and the like
@@RetroRatchet I think a small length of scaffold tube fits perfectly on the ignition barrel
Pretty much every car in the 80s and 90s could be opened and started with flathead screwdriver or a wire coat hanger ..
My dad brought that back into England from France before selling it to Mike. If I remember correctly my dad paid £1 for it 😁
Hello mate, yeah mind him saying to me, got a nice history, really glad he rescued it when he did. Hope yours is running alright
About 20 year's ago on the road not since 👍
Hopefully now will stay on road for a good few years

I thought they were EFI?
Blast from the past
Cheers, !
Any chance you can help me restore my Nissan Pulsar gtir?
If only i had the time mate! The gtir is one on my bucket list 🤫

Think were all guilty of that mate. Yeah they are pretty thin on ground now, my 1st car was a metro 1.0 made to look like a turbo
I'd heard Jamiroquai liked cars but a montego 😭.😂
Why would you want to steal any sort of Montego?
Coz they went like stink
