Fast & light - the Honda CR-X Story

  • When Europe produced hot hatches in the 80s it was cars like the Renault 5 Turbo and the Ford Fiesta XR2 - great cars that took the regular hatchback and added more power and better brakes. Over in Japan Honda took a different tack. They crafted a new, very low drag shape for the existing Civic. They also removed a lot of weight. Together with a range of powerful yet efficient range of engines they created a car with great handling, acceleration, and fuel economy that had more in common with the MG Midget than the MG Metro. Some car journalists heralded it as the future of compact sports cars. So, was the Honda CR-X God’s gift to small hatchbacks or did it have its flaws, and what the heck happened with the third generation car?

I didn't own a CRX, but I had access to an '89 Si as a 'demo' when working at a Honda dealership as a salesman. It had incredible power and handling, and felt like a much more expensive car than it was. The little glass panel in the back did help with rear visibility, but not by a whole bunch. That car had near-perfect handling, but it was subject to lift-off oversteer, something that really caught me by surprise the first time it happened (!) Thanks for another informative and enjoyable video!

I have a ´89 euro Si, which has the 1.6 DOHC non-vtec 131hp engine. It's my only car, very handy even for hauling some stuff, since half of the car is basically cargo room.
It is very fun to drive, and keeps up with the traffic, even outruns some poor modern cars. It must have been nuts in the 80s.
Our family had a ´86 1st gen CRX too, it was very fun to drive as well.
Visibility in the 2nd gen is great, I've never seen a car with better visibility.

I owned a 91 CRX Si while stationed in Germany. Enjoyed it immensely more than the 10 year old BMW 528 it replaced. It was quicker, faster, more economical, reliable, practical and yes... comfortable than the old Beemer. I think the rear window was kind of a nod to the Fulvia. The bar was barely noticeable to me and made parking in downtown Frankfurt or Wiesbaden a breeze. The perfect car at the perfect time for me. Meinen Roter Blitzwagen

I had a 2nd gen (1988) CRX with the 16-valve 1.5, TBI, and a 5-speed. There was no back seat. I got 32 MPG in town and 41 on the highway. The prior owner had put Acura hubcaps on it so everyone thought it was cooler / more expensive than it truly was.
I was single, no kids, ending my time in the military and going to college, so it was a good fit. I never had any trouble finding a parking space for it, as it was so small. Drove it all over the USA, which was a real treat since it didn't have cruise control.
I nearly had my driver's license suspended because I got so many speeding tickets in it. It didn't accelerate very quickly (the SI, with the larger engine and MPI, was better for that) but it just kept accelerating and accelerating, very smoothly, until you ended up 20+ MPH over the speed limit and ... oops. Deceptively fast little ride.
I intentionally got it up to 110 MPH, late one night, before I backed off. Luckily, no tickets on that run. But the engine and suspension were still perfectly smooth at that speed. I wanna say it would've hit the 135 on the top of the speedometer without issue. There was plenty of room left on the tach.
It had 250+k miles on it when it finally hit "tired iron" status, I had difficulty buying a working ECU for it, and I had to send it to the junkyard.

I had a UK spec 84 model with the 1500cc PGM-FI engine, it was fast for its time with 100hp being quoted for the output. 0-60 was approx 8.4 secs and a top speed of approx 120 mph made it quite potent. The only things the car needed was wider tires and better shock absorbers, so I bought some lower profile and wider 185/60 13s and some Koni shocks, then reworked their internal valving and readjusted the ride height. I never found anything wrong with the brakes and the car actually handled better as it was driven faster. The 1500cc 12 valve engine had a good spread of torque from low down through the mid range; sadly the 1600cc 16 valve versions lost a lot of the perfect lower and mid range of the 1500 and only gained a bit more at the top end. My biggest peeve was in typical Japanese fashion, the first gear could have been taller to get it closer to the second gear as the difference between them was just a bit too wide. For some weight comparisons my model with a/c weighed in at 820kgs while my BMC MG1100 weighed in at 813kgs. Bear in mid the heavy lump of the MGs engine was almost 500 lbs while the CR-X had an all alloy engine weighting significantly less, plastic bumpers, plastic ft fenders (wings) and the plastic grey lower sills. This meant that the CR-Xs body shell was a lot heaver than the MGs with four doors and subframes,,,minus the engines.

When they switched to fuel-injection, the S became the Si. So the i stands for “fuel injection” (like it did on many cars at the time), but the S stands for “sport.”

The coolest thing about the Del Sol is the power rear window. Odd that it's not even mentioned. The TransTop was unreliable, added 200 lbs, filled up most of the trunk, and was only available in Japan/Europe. But the regular targa top is awesome. It definitely doesn't take two people to lift the 11 lb. roof panel. Maybe if your arms were super short and you couldn't reach far enough to support it under the middle it would be tricky? But you just unlatch two little latches, pop the trunk, get out of the car, and if you're strong enough to lift 11 lbs. it takes less than 5 seconds to put the top in the trunk. You can easily do it at a red light. And the trunk was huge. Even with the targa top in there, it had a ton of room.
In 2010 I sold my Del Sol and got a Miata and the step-down in trunk space was comical. But the canvas top on the NB Miata is even easier to take down. You don't even need to take your seat belt off. You just unlatch two latches and you can put the top down with one arm while you're driving - but that would be a really bad idea if you're going very fast.

Such a great car! and less than 100 left on the UK roads. Maybe I should get some video of it while it's in mint condition.

Hard to argue; I first noticed it in '83 (84?) when the new Prelude came out. It was like Honda had leaped an entire generation ahead of everyone else, and two from where the previous iteration had been.

I test drove a CR-X in 1989 in Colorado Springs. It would have been my first car but when I found out what the payment and insurance were going to be, it was a no go (the insurance cost was actually MORE than the payment - I was 20 at the time), Was the first time I drove a manual and it was quite the challenge as Colorado Springs has quite a bit of hills (being in the Rockies). The salesman could not have been happy with me but he let me drive it anyway.
I had a CR-Z for about 5 years and had fun with it. Of course it was completely different and a whole lot heavier.

Funny that people are complaining about the rear window. I never saw it as an obstruction, but found it clever there was extra glass under the spoiler. Visibility is still miles ahead of most (or all) modern cars with huge pillars miles away and high shoulders making it impossible to see the road nearby. I was surprised when you said you didnt experience much power difference between the Si and the DX, but then I realised the Si didn’t get the B16A DOHC engine we got in Europe (in the VTI version), but the SOHC version instead. Thanks for the video 👍

I currently own an 85 CRX Si. Absolutely love it to death despite its issues like rust and broken parts over the course of almost 40 years. I got am engine lined up for it, an K20A2 pulled from an RSX Type S. It will take a few years to get the parts to build it, though.

The CRX and Del Sol were never offered with optional ABS in the United States(except for the Del Sol VTEC in 1995). That was a grave error on Honda's part.

in hindsight seems like my girlfriends picked better cars than me!! Carolyn had a red honda crx that hit the governed seed limit, 125, got 48 mpg, handled great, Gail had a suzuki esteem got 48 mpg had 4 doors and a trunk, ran great, later on around 2000 racer friends were screaming unlimited revs in CRX's, wow, a super car indeed, i think i shifted through 3 or 4 gears with power at the same speed!! what a car!!

I had a 1990, second gen, JDM 1.5 Dual Carb for a few years. It was the best car I ever had. So small, weighed f*ck all and had a sweet centre of gravity. Ayrton Senna had one and often turned up to practice sessions in it. I miss that car 🥲

I've had 6 crx's and 3 civics. I can confirm the 2nd Gen split rear view is actually super nice. You can see right thru the bottom piece of glass. You just gotta lean the seat back like you are about to deliver some tofu in a hurry.

Oh boy did these hit big in the USA- it was the first car I'd ever seen with a "Additional Dealer Markup" sticker on it, which immediately made it less of a value than the VW GTI.
Fortunately for Honda dealers, the DM was about to go through the roof, leaving them only their fellow Asians and a few domestic models for competition.

I had a 1984 with the 1.3 and no back seat. Not very powerful but it got places with great mileage and could haul a good bit of cargo. The next best is that it didn't rust as fast as the others. The 70s models rusted out and the shock towers went.

1st and 2nd generation CRX were such fun cars to drive! As for the extra glass at the back: it was a nice style addition, but the car was so small that the rear visibility wasn't ever a huge issue.

Absolutely love the mk2 vtec crx, my parents had a volve 740se estate in 1990 and it went in for warranty work and his loan car was one. My mum was not at all happy as there was 5 of us and my brother was a baby. Me and my dad spend a happy summers weekend driving all over the place. He was like a driver transformed, from plodding along he chased that 8000 rpm redline whenever he could flying round corners. It cemented my growing love of cars particularly small fast good handling ones and I saw a different side of my dad which was fun. My mum still occasionally moans about it now over 30 years later 😂

My dad got one of the first generation CR-Xs with the 125hp 1.6l in red with the painted bumpers and a factory wing. He got it after the reunion of Germany and it must've been one of the fastest cars around here in eastern Germany at that time. :D
He sold it because I was born and it was to tiny for a family. :(

I owned two first-generation CRXs (base and Si), a second-generation CRX Si, and a del Sol Si, and I can confidently say they were all great cars. The first-generation car was the most raw, very tossable and most likely to step out in a corner (which made it fun to autocross) but it had a relatively cheap-feeling interior. The second-generation felt comparatively like a GT, with a more tractable engine, less dodgy handling, and an interior that was the best in any car I’ve owned (and yes, the visibility was excellent, even out the rear). The del Sol had a unique interior and rev-happy engine, but was indeed a disappointment compared to the previous generations, as the chassis had quite a lot of flex with the roof panel removed, and the engine lacked the mid-range punch of the previous cars. I eventually moved on to a Miata (and still own one), but I don’t think even a Miata is as fun as to drive quickly as a CRX. Those were Honda’s peak years and the CRX was one of their crown jewels. Thank you for the reminder!

My dad had a first gen CR-X back in the day and I remember him telling me that he really liked it. He just bought a used CR-Z with a 6 speed stick as his daily driver and I’ve gotten to drive it a few times. It has the bar across the rear window and yes it does kind of get in the way. But other than that I think it’s a really fun car to drive.

I owned a MK2 CRX. The problem with the rear hatch isn't visibility, I could see out of it fine (the top half anyway, at 6 feet tall I almost sat in the ceiling), but i had a LHD version and they didn't mirror the rear wiper like they did the fronts, which meant it wiped the passenger side of the rear windscreen! Since it was useless, I removed it using the OEM HF plug :P
