- This is a clip from a silent, colour film showing scenes around Winchester in 1964. It is taken from a collection of Winchester Museum amateur films showing various areas of the town. The reel shows various streets in the town centre, and the inside as well as the outside of Macfisheries supermarket.

What a lovely film. Thank you. I'm Winchester born and bred. It's made me feel very nostalgic.
This is later than 1964. There is a Mk2 Cortina in the queue of traffic outside Sainsburys at 1.22 in. The Mk 2 Cortina was available from October 1966, so the film is after that date. Also as there are leaves on the trees it is likely that it is at least Spring 1967.
I was about 8 when this was taken, and remember not understanding the concept of the new supermarkets - just take it off the shelf? I used to go on the 47 to Southampton, just to walk around and explore, on my own, never felt at risk. Wish I could go back to those innocent days!
Watching this brought back many memories. Also the amount of shops that are no longer around.

I find it incredibly strange to see a two-way road up the high street! The city centre has become so much more pedestranised.

Took me a while to work out that I was looking at the high Street; seeing cars driving there confused me lol
Lived in Winchester for a couple of years; beautiful city.
This, for me, *is* Winchester - I was at school there from 1964 to 1970, and although I've been back a time or two since, Winchester is still like this in my memory! We used to buy cheese, etc, in the Macfisheries Food Centre to supplement school food....

Its amazing to watch this video as I was born and bread in WInchester and lived in this beautiful city from 1986-2009 when I moved to Christchurch to live with my wife at the age of 23. The city of Winchester other than the lack of a pedestrianised high St. and the old fashioned shops hasn't really changed at all, its great to see that M&S and Saintsbury's are still in the same location back then as they are today but the best sight of all is seeing all those beautiful green Route masters serving the city!
Love how the station still insisted on using the full title of Omnibus station back then too.
I like the way the J Sainsbury is still there after practically 60 years.

You can see why they pedestrianised the High Street, the film showing the crowds of shoppers on a Saturday. Certainly more foot fall then you’d get today even with the no traffic. The city centre today is a pale reflection of what is was even at the turn of this century. Most city centres are dying in front of our noses and we don’t realise it, mainly due to online shopping.
As a current student at Winchester College who has seen the old pictures of the college, I can say the town changes mirror the college changes as well

In pre NBC Days when the Tilling Group (state owned buses) Hants and Dorset were green. As was, different shade + more cream , King Alfred Buses

In the days when every town centre had a Dewhurst Butchers and a John Collier gentlements outfitters (not that any of their stuff every fitted me).
I remember McFisheries and the Wimpy. Also the Cadena Cafe.

The post war architecture was utterly awful. That sort of thing never sits well along side the old. It wasn’t as though they had the excuse of massive wartime damage.
It never ceases to amaze me how the city council manage to turn a vibrant city centre an unpopular area for shops, many of them closed down because of the anti-car policy and encourage drug addicts and beggars to a one popular town centre shopping area.
it was proper England in those days. England is more like a 3rd world country now. very sad.
